I installed today (fresh install) the latest version of squeeze, and after installing kuser, I attempted to run the program (of course as root), so that I can start managing accounts with my preferred application. However, this is what I got when I attempted to run the program:
# kuser
QGtkStyle was unable to detect the current GTK+ theme.
Qt: Session management error: None of the authentication protocols specified are supported
kuser(3136): Session bus not found
KCrash: Application 'kuser' crashing...
sock_file=/root/.kde/socket-hostname/kdeinit4__0
Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory

Have you guys had this weird nautilus error? When I su to root and run "nautilus" in terminal, errors popped out:
Code: (nautilus:3979): EggSMClient-WARNING **: Failed to connect to the session manager: None of the authentication protocols specified are supported(nautilus:3979): Eel-WARNING **: GConf error: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. I was trying to install winbind on a RHEL5 machine and I had to reboot the RHEL machine. When it came back up, I'm not able to log in as root or any other user. When I use root and give a random password, it says invalid username or password but when I use the correct password, I get an Authentication failed pop up box (under GUI). SSh window says invalid password for random passwords and the SSH window disappears when I type in the right password. Can you please let me know if I can somehow get back in by stopping any of the services

Im having some issues regarding AD authentication.
I have the PC running Ubuntu 8.10, it has likewise installed and is working great except for one problem.
We have currently two domains. One is called FS and one is called PIONEER. I joined the PC to FS, and can authenticate to FS perfectly (using FSuser at login), but when trying to Authenticate to PIONEER (using PIONEERuser at login) it just sits at the blank background and doesnt load the desktop at all.
What am I missing? Is there an conf file i need to edit?
Here is output of my auth.log when I try to log in using the PIONEERJpionner login
Code:
It looks as thought its not lauching the session.
Also, I am able to get in with PIONEERJpioneer using the failsafe terminal, but upon logon it gives me:
Then it acts normal.

When i try to create a virtual machine using the Windows 7 Enterprise Evaluation iso file, everything goes as planned untill i click on the start button. when i click on it i get two error messages. the first: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows 7. The virtual machine 'Windows 7' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1. Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908). The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. reinstall the kernel module by executing
'/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'
as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. i have installed the DKMS package, but when i try to run the command stated in the error message, i get another error message in the terminal:
[code]...
i have to install the driver that is specified (vboxdrv) but i do not know where to find it.

I am having some problems changing the sources.list...or am i? i not sure what's going on, Could be a permissions issue?
Details:
1.Note i have stopped #repository here to try another, the last one.
2.When i issue command from root terminal, this is result, though it does let me pull up the sources.list and edit.
3.I also have a sources.list.save /etc/apt/sources.list.save
Should that be there? It does not change along with sources.list changes made.

If your machine is connected to the Internet, you'll probably want to disallow ssh password authentication (which is advised but not mandatory). Edit the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file and change/add the following lines:
PasswordAuthentication no
AllowUsers nx
Don't forget to restart the sshd daemon after making that change: service sshd restart I already have PasswordAuthentication yes in my file as I need it to login to the server through ssh. Do I just skip that line and only add AllowUsers nx mynxuser at the end? Also, I followed the rest of the manual and when I tried the client on Windows it failed: I put in a user and password to login but shouldn't it be using the key instead? I think the problem is related to the above due to:
Quote:
NX> 203 NXSSH running with pid: 1428
NX> 285 Enabling check on switch command
NX> 285 Enabling skip of SSH config files
[code]...

I want to connect my Debian Squeeze machine to my school wireless network with wpa_supplicant.
I think the network uses 802.1X authentication, because when the other students connects to the network for the first time in Windows they enter their username and password then the connection is established. I have asked the the IT staff but they do not known what 802.1X, PEAP EAP etc. is and just say "Enter the login details in the box!".
If I bring a Windows 7 machine to school and successful connects to the network, is it then possible for me to extract the information [and extract a certificate if used on the network] from Windows somehow so i can setup the wpa_supplicant.conf correctly on Debian?
The information I want to extract is which protocols are used, like PEAP,MSCHAP etc.

I'm trying to use gedit as root to edit some config files, but everytime I try to open it, I get this mess. I had a similar issue with debian, and someone solved it by telling my to run gksu nautilus. I tried to run gksu gedit, but apparently that doesn't work on Fedora. I really like Fedora, and I want to stick with it, but if I can't edit these files, I'm going to have issues.

I'm extremely new to SuSE Linux. I wanted to move away from Windows and so I decided to reload my Desktop with SuSE linux.I have had no trouble until now. I'm trying to connect to my work VPN connection. From my laptop (which unfortunately is Vista) I'm able to connect without any issues. However, when I tried out the KVPN application on my SuSE linux, it just doesn't work. I get the error:
Authentification has failed.
As a side note, when I type ping google, the packets are received 100% but when I ping my company address, no packets are received. Hope this info is useful.

Every time I invoke gedit from the root terminal I get:-

Password:
[root@FSLServer AnOther]# gedit
(gedit:6447): EggSMClient-WARNING **: Failed to connect to the session manager: None of the authentication protocols specified are supported
followed by 33 occurrences of:-
GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See [URL]. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.)gedit opens fine but it seems really odd. My exposure to linux is not vast but this has never happened before Fedora12 It doesn't happen if I just use the terminal as an ordinary user.It also has nothing to do with the Bad & Ugly Gstreamer plugins as this happened from the moment the system was installed from the DVD and before the plugins were loaded even after removing them and rebooting I still get the ream of GConf errors if I start Gedit after su,

Everyone is wondering why we can't run gEdit and other tools from a terminal by logging in as root(e.g"su-"), I understand that by making changes they are trying to force us as users of Linux to learn better habits that are more secure, but the issues are driving people nuts!
I for one really like being able to log as root and open gEdit to make drive changes without having to login as root, I would normally still have access to all my things like email etc. So changing Linux to force everyone to not use tools like gEdit as root is becoming more of an inconvenience than they realize, there must be a safe way to do this!

I have a desktop that has a d-link DWL-520 wireless card, which was working under Windoze. Today I installed Centos 5.4 on the system , which went cleanly. I then used Network Configuration to set up the wireless card. I specified to use DHCP, set the SSID and authentication password. When I tried to activate the card I get these error messages
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. Determining IP information for wlan0.
The hardware manager seems to have correctly identified the card and chipset, (Intersil Prism 2.5) and installed driver hostap_pci which came with the distro. This web site seems to suggest that this is the correct driver: [URL] searching forums I've found a few references to these errors, but they were from several years ago, and for different distros and cards. I did find a reference to using Network Manager to configure the card instead of Network Configuration. I started the NM service and configured a connection using it instead, but still no luck.

This is a Natty system. I ran update manager to update to the latest releases for Natty, and it crashed. I ran it again and it told me it could only do a partial upgrade, and that I should do apt-get install -f. I did that, but apt-get told me the system was locked by another program. Not to worry I thought, I'll just reboot. So I did that, and I think Update-Manager got a lot further through the process than I thought, because my system is borked. It'll boot into Gnome, but when booting up the Boot Screen no longer shows the pretty Ubuntu Logo, but rather a line of text that says "Ubuntu 11.04".
When it gets into Gnome the keyboard and mouse more or less don't work (although the keyboard based Fn+9 and Fn+10 brightness control still works) and there is no desktop background. After about 30 seconds something crashes but I can't click on it to find out what. Going into the recovery console doesn't help either. The latest Kernel (2.6.38-7) stops moving forwards after "Begin:Running /scripts/init-bottom...done". has occurred for the second time. Luckily I still have the previous kernel, which gets to the same spot and then tells me:
"init: udevtrigger main process (390) terminated with status 1" and then "init: udevtrigger post-stop process (394) terminated with status 1".
I then get the message
"The disc drive for / is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery". S goes back to "Begin:Running /scripts/init-bottom...done" a second time, M brings up the message:
"Root filesystem check failed. A maintenance shell will now be started"
and then it asks for the root password and gives me a terminal. Everything seems to be there, but apt-get and dpkg both can't do anything as the filesystem is read only.

I installed slackware 12.1 from files i downloaded and converted to cd (images). There are six "disks" i downloaded from the slackware site and converted to images via a homemade .cmd in windows xp and then burned using imgburn.
I partitioned my hd (canibalized from an acquaintance's emachine and connected it to my desktop (1G ram, 2Ghz processor). Booted from disk 1 and fomatted the 80G HD for 2 partitions of linuxswapable at 2G apeice and 2 partitions of bootable linux. (Because i want to try another distro later). I ran the setup installing most everything and all seemed to go well. After i exited setup and restarted, it identifed the cd/hd as normal and then went into some sort of recovery mode with the emachine logo call pcangel, after which it tells me.
STOP: c0000021a (fatal system error) The session manager initialization system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc000003a (0x00000000 0x00000000). the system has been shut down. So, is this indeed an xp error message, and if so, why am i getting it after formatting everything?
