I have searched various forums and only found advice in the most complicated of cases such as dual boots and multiple hard drives.
I have a simpler question.
Currently I have a Dell GX280 with an ATi graphics card which I am using as a media centre. I will soon be moving the hard drive this to an NVIDIA Ion Atom based system. Can I just move the hard drive? Should I uninstall the ATi graphics first?
Anything else I should do?
For Ubuntu 10.04 LTS / Gnome 2.30.2.
I have two applets on my Gnome panel -- NetworkManager Applet 0.8, and Klipper (it works better than Glipper) -- that I want to move.
HOWEVER, right-clicking the panel icons does not enable me to move these applets, as follows:
- NetworkManager Applet 0.8 does not include a Move item in its list of options.
- Klipper displays a long list of Klipper options but no Move option.
How I can move these items to new locations on the Gnome panel?
I want to install Ubuntu 10.04 to another machine alongside that other machine's XP. I know I could just run the install disc; but I'd like to take what changes I've made to Ubuntu along with it - for instance, TrueCrypt, Simple Backup, AdobeReader 3 (I think that's an addition), K3b, MuseScore, and some other applications I've added along the way. Also, I went thru some Terminal commands to get Brasero to copy CD's recently and would like to avoid doing that again.

Some specifics: The installation functions as my lanServer, and has been modified with thirdparty-repositories and probably also directly downloaded debs, also some packages have been compiled from cvs.
Some of the services it provides are: dns, dhcp, ssh, ftp, http(ssl), blog, caldav, mldonkey, vnc, vpn (and appleshare in disorder). Probably some I forgot.
The old and the new hardware are quite similar, moving from Dell Latitude D600 to D610, so I wonder if it would be possible to simply boot the new hardware from the old installation?
Is there a way to reinvoke hardware-recognition?

I have Fedora 12 on a laptop and I want to move to Ubuntu 10.04 without losing anything. How do I do this? I find that Ubuntu is easier to use day in and day out on my other laptop than Fedora 12 is. There seems to be more support and help on Ubuntu as well. Thanks you for the help. I know I can backup files I want to keep to an external drive and then restore them in Ubunto, but is there anything else I need to know? Will Ubuntu see the Fedora 12 install and import items like it does from Windows?

After reading some online literature on the subject recently, I suspect that the GRUB may be on the internal hard disk MBR instead of the MBR for my USB drive. How can I move the GRUB to another MBR without completely reinstalling it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu installed on my 1st HD partition and working pretty much the way I like. I need to convert this to a dual-boot system with Windows. Windows really wants to be on the first partition on the first drive, so I think I need to move Ubuntu to the 3rd partition, behind the swap partition.I could do a complete reinstall but that would take forever. Is it reasonable to just copy the present /dev/sd0a partition to /dev/sd0c, install Windows, then run the Ubuntu CD to reinstall GRUB?
I guess I could just use dd for this but it's been so long that I've forgotten the correct method for moving a whole filesystem.
I've been landed with a disk from a friend whose machine we've never managed to get into the BIOS of and tweak the boot order to include a CD drive.
I pulled the disk from my own system and ran a from-scratch install on this shiny blank disk with numerous of the tweaks I like and he'll need. (Getting pleased with how the time to usable is still dropping doing an install).
What I'm concerned about is sticking this disk in his machine and using it. I've gone with the sort-of generic 32-bit base even though both his machine and mine are Athlons. However, he's a musician and has some rather nice audio kit - as well as, I suspect, different video hardware.
Am I likely to hit noticeable problems? Is there some script I can arm myself with to rescan available hardware and update config, or can someone give a list of packages to completely remove then reinstall via the recovery boot?
I know the latter option may well cause some dependency problems that see stuff I've already installed lost - I can cope with that if I can get the GUI running smoothly.
The HDD on which I currently have my Ubuntu partition(s) (as well as a Windows partition) is dying on me (non-zero bad sector count, with warning pop-ups from Ubuntu). I have already ordered a replacement hard drive*, but I was wondering if there is a simple way to transfer the contents of my current hard drive to my new hard drive in such a way that the new one will be a fully functional replacement (e.g. so that everything will boot and run properly on the new hard drive). Which is a different size (bigger) than the current drive.

And while I'm at it, what other important directories should I move to separate partitions? And how do I do it? I'm guessing that the /boot directory should also be moved to its own partition too, yes? Because it has the GRUB in it, and if I removed Ubuntu to make way for a newer version of Ubuntu, I'll just get an error because the computer can't find the GRUB that doesn't exist anymore, right? It boots up the Installer boot menu and asks me if i want to run Ubuntu from the USB or Save it to hard drive. Do I need to get any data from the MBR on the failing disk before removing it?

However, I notice that GParted doesn't seem to have any support for LVM, which is going to be a pain in the rear if I subsequently try to add Ubuntu to the Mandriva boot setup.
The problem I have with DiskDrake (Mandrivas partition editor) is that it only seems to be able to put partitions at the beginning of the drive and it doesn't seem to be able to move partitions. e.g. if I want to create a new partition at the end for swap and leave some unallocated space in the middle for my future Ubuntu installation I am stuck. GParted allows me to create at the end or effectively move it by resizing the beginning and end of the partition.
DiskDrake allows me to create and edit LVM partitions.
Is there perhaps another partition editor that does both? Or maybe a development version of one that does it? Or some option I am missing?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have upgraded my sons PC and the new Mother Board won't take the original IDE drive (SATA Only) so I am left with a situation where I have an IDE drive with an Ubuntu 10.10 system installed that I need to copy over to my sons shiny new upgraded PC.After a lot of searching around I found these instructions here URL... and set about the following actions:
-I installed Ubuntu 10.10 from a live CD on the system
-I ran a tar command to back up the old HDD (as per instructions in the above link)
-I copied the resulting tgz file accross to the new HDD via the network
Then I followed the instructions to restore the Ubuntu installation (But not re creating the folders I ommitted as they were already there on the new HDD after the installation) and all seemed to work well until I rebooted the new PC.I'm now getting an alert on boot up stating. ALERT! dev/disk/by-uuid does not exist message and I'm being dropped into a shell.The UUID specified is that of the original HDD not the new one and I would like some advice on how best to proceed from here. I'm assuming that if I can fix this issue all will be good but I'm left wondering if the new hardware will be detected properly.

So I take the liberty to post this in a new thread: I have installed ubuntu 9.10 on a laptop in dual boot configuration (other OS is WinXP). grub starts and I can hit enter to boot Ubuntu. However as soon as I use an arrow key to move downwards in the menu, grub hangs. In this condition I cannot boot any other OS, not even the "safe" version of Ubuntu.
Any idea what is the cause of this? It is a fresh installation and I read in the other thread that reinstalling grub or re-running grub-update had no positive effect. Does anone know how I can install grub 0.97 ? Where do I find it?
I have windows 7 installed in my internal laptop hard disk and I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 "the Karmic Koala - released in October 2009 and supported until April 2011", on my external hard disk. The problem I am facing is that the GRUB have been installed on the hard disk, for that reason if my laptop have restarted I need the hard disk to be attached to it to load the GRUB and to log in to windows. I need guidance in moving the GRUB to my internal hard disk or return the windows boot loader in charge, so I can boot my windows without the hard disk.

I have heard that there is a way to copy your home folder over to the next release and all of the data and program settings will remain intact. I have tried some research on the subject but everything I have found has been extremely confusing. I want to do a fresh install (as my updater has been failing time and time again and asking for partial upgrades etc). Instead of creating a new partition for the home folder, would it be possible to move it to an external drive and copy it back over (I have tried to copy it to the external but I get some errors even in sudo)?

Well, after one year, two upgrades, a lot of random problems dealing with RAID support, and a lot of articles read, I have come to my senses.
The problem: I have a fakeraid using dmraid, RAID 1, two SATA harddrives. They are mirrors of eachother, including separate home and root partitions. I actually found the method I think I had used here: [URL]
The ideal solution: No need to reinstall, no need of another drive, no need to format.
My last resort: Buy a drive, copy my home directory, start from scratch, copy my stuff over.

I have a Wubi install of 10.04 in my C: partition. I had given it 20GB of space but over the months my C: has become almost full, so I need to move the Wubi install to another partition (say E. I looked around for instructions on how to do it, but I could only find instructions for grub-legacy (that ask you to modify C:/ubuntu/disks/boot/grub/menu.lst) and not grub2 (which doesn't have menu.lst) used by 10.04.
