Ubuntu :: Move To Internal HDD?

Jul 9, 2010

I'd like to move Ubuntu to my internal HDD. It is 500GB. Currently, only XP is on there. I'd like to divide the partition in two. That way I've got 250GB for each OS and then my additional 250GB external.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Move Grub To Internal Hard Disk

Jan 29, 2010

I have windows 7 installed in my internal laptop hard disk and I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 "the Karmic Koala - released in October 2009 and supported until April 2011", on my external hard disk. The problem I am facing is that the GRUB have been installed on the hard disk, for that reason if my laptop have restarted I need the hard disk to be attached to it to load the GRUB and to log in to windows. I need guidance in moving the GRUB to my internal hard disk or return the windows boot loader in charge, so I can boot my windows without the hard disk.

Ubuntu :: Panel Applet - If Right-click Doesn't Include Move - How To Move That Icon

Sep 19, 2010

For Ubuntu 10.04 LTS / Gnome 2.30.2.

I have two applets on my Gnome panel -- NetworkManager Applet 0.8, and Klipper (it works better than Glipper) -- that I want to move.

HOWEVER, right-clicking the panel icons does not enable me to move these applets, as follows:

- NetworkManager Applet 0.8 does not include a Move item in its list of options.

- Klipper displays a long list of Klipper options but no Move option.

How I can move these items to new locations on the Gnome panel?

Ubuntu (10.04 - 64 bit) isn't using all internal speakers. Only the right speaker is working, resulting in low volume. If I attach external speakers or headphones, everything is fine. I checked the Alsamixer, but there's nothing to unmute there that has any effect.

The sound settings shows Internal Audio and RV710/730, but if I switch to the latter I have no sound.

Ubuntu :: Prevent Mounting Of Internal HDD?

I have a machine with Windows XP installed on the HDD. I intend to install Ubuntu on a USB memory stick so that I can insert it into a USB slot and boot from that instead. What I would like to do though is to prevent it having access to the existing internal hard drive. It sounds as if it should be easy but I ca find a lot about mounting devices but not preventing auto-mounting.

Ubuntu Networking :: DNS For Temporary Internal LAN Only?

Dec 6, 2010

I am currently working with a cloning project using FOG on Ubuntu 10.10 (Desktop). While there is certainly a learning curve, all seems to be going well.

For the initial project, I have this "cloning network" isolated completely. Meaning, it is not connected to my main network/domain switch - FOG is handling the DHCP, I have a dedicated managed switch handling the routing between the FOG server and the client clones.

The main problem I am having is that Ubuntu is not able to resolve the hostnames of the client computers.

I know this is because I do not have DNS setup on my Ubuntu PC.

What is the best route to take in order to resolve this? Can I use bind9 to take care of it, or is that too complicated for what I need it to do?

One of the disks contains windows system files. These disks were easily accessible from ubuntu, I could mount/unmount anytime I wanted and had no problem with editing files. I did something I can't remember, I was just following some instruction trying to solve problem with my SD card reader. turned out it wasn't the right solution (but I fixed the SD card issue using some other instruction).

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Internal Microphone To Work

Jan 26, 2011

Graphics annoyances. I'm having a few graphics problems, here's a quick screen shot: [URL]... Notice the white and red lines at the top of the screen. They seem to go away when I have another window in use over that one. But as soon as I go back to the effected window, it returns to that weird state. Also notice to the left, the terminal at the top and the trash can at the bottom. There are yellow lines on them. I figure that's not normal as well. I managed to fix the problem by simply closing the Chrome app and restarting it. But I assume the problem will arise again some time.

I also notice that a lot of words on my screen are cluttered with strange lines, especially the letters "r", "a", and "i". Here is a good screenshot: [URL]... Here is one last screenshot of the display bars where I'm uploading the pics to, notice how the output area for the URL to the pic is all jacked up: [URL]... Internal microphone. I have an HP DV7 laptop and I can't get the internal microphone to work.

Ubuntu :: Can't Use The Internal DVD Drives On The Computer

May 12, 2011

I was wondering if it was possible to put something like a linux image on to a hard drive to install the OS on first boot. The reason I want to do this is because of the following reasons. First, I broke the IDE port on the mobo so I can't use the internal DVD drives on the computer.

Second, I don't have an extra SATA DVD drive lying around. Third, for some reason, this computer will boot from a USB DVD drive but once it starts loading the kernel, it just stops calling the drive and the computer freezes. I tested the disc and the drive with another computer and it works fine. And forth, the computer refuses to boot from a USB flash drive with linux on it. So as you can see, I'm in a bit of a pickle here. I would love to be able to hook the hard drive up to another computer and put the required files on the it for it to boot up to an installation.

Networking :: Cannot Ping Internal NIC On Ubuntu 9.10

May 31, 2011

CLIENT A - 10.10.10.2
|
ROUTER - eth0 - 10.10.10.1
ROUTER - eth1 - 10.10.20.1

[Code]....

Everything is working fine and CLIENT A can talk to CLIENT B and vice versa, with only one problem - CLIENT A cannot ping 10.10.30.1.

I checked routing several times, there is no NAT and firewall is disabled on the SERVER.

CLIENT B can ping and access any device in the diagram. CLIENT A can ping and access any device in the diagram too, however cannot ping eth1 of SERVER (10.10.30.1). ROUTER can ping any device in the diagram except eth1 of SERVER (10.10.30.1).

If I launch 'ping 10.10.30.1' from CLIENT A and run tcpdump on SERVER eth0 I see no hits at all. If I launch 'ping 10.10.30.1' from CLIENT A and run tcpdump on SERVER eth1 I see ICMP requests coming from CLIENT A but no replies.

It doesn't look like a routing problem because clients A and B can communicate with each other. Also, we have around 20 similar installations but this is the first time CLIENT A cannot ping internal interface of SERVER.

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Build Internal DNS Server

Jan 14, 2010

How can i build an internal dns server for my network, but don't use the top level domain, e.g:. mycat.com. I want to use mycat.kgn. And I want to put a mycat.kgn mail server on the network for internal uses.

My setup:
dns mx mail2.mycat.com (my server)
mx mail.mycat.com (godaddy)
inet-gateway & firewall & mailserver:
centos 4, mail2.mycat.com
nic1 - internet
nic2 - 192.168.0.1
kerio email server 6

All workstation & server uses:
ip: (below)
netmask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.0.1
dns: 192.168.0.1

Workstations:
windows & linux
nic1 - (192.168.0.20 - 192.168.0.199)

Printers:
HP laserjet
jetdirect (192.168.0.211 - 192.168.0.249)

Data server:
1. ubuntu 8.04 LTS, nic1 - 192.168.0.8
2. redhat AS 2.1, nic1 - 192.168.0.10
3. xenserver 5.0, nic1 - 192.168.0.11
- windows 2003 terminal server, xen-nic1 - 192.168.0.210
- winxp sp3 accpac, xen-nic2 - 192.168.0.2
- win2000 sp4, xen-nic2 - 192.168.0.200

Config: I need a dns server with:
dns mx zimbra.mycat.kgn 192.168.0.127
A mycat.kgn 192.168.0.1
A samba.mycat.kgn 192.168.0.128
A www.mycat.kgn 192.168.0.1
NS ns1.mycat.kgn 192.168.0.129

All workstation and servers:
ip: (same as above)
netmask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.0.1
dns: 192.168.0.129

ldap all machine to zimbra.mycat.kgn for login info and password.
map drive g: to samba.mycat.kgn data-share (with users rights from ldap)

I tried to do this in virtualbox, but fail badly! I created 6 vm using ubuntu 804 and 910, but my dns was not getting any records with dig, so I found an howto on powerdns. But I had to use mycat.com and not mycat.kgn?

I will draw my network to be!
each machine:
ip: (sameas above)
gateway: 192.168.0.1
dns: 192.168.0.129
dns-nameserver 192.168.0.129
nameserver 192.168.0.129
and if the dns server does not find the info it forward it to the gateway 192.168.0.1

Ubuntu Installation :: Swap The Internal HD Out To A New System?

Jan 29, 2010

I have an existing Ubunto 9.10 install sitting on a 500 GB SATA drive that was sitting in my second SATA port. I'm trying to swap the internal HD out to a new system that has a 500 GB SATA drive with Windows 7 on it as the primary drive, in SATA port 0. When I configure BIOS to boot from my Ubuntu drive, I just get a flashing cursor on the screen and no Grub bootloader like I was before.

Does this mean Grub isn't on my Ubuntu drive? Should I install grub on both my Ubuntu drive's MBR AND my primary Windows 7 drive's MBR, or only one of the other. The instructions I've been reading don't specify which drive to reinstall Grub on and which drive I should boot from, so I'm confused. How do I get it so that Grub acknowledges my Windows 7 install on the primary drive?

Then I booted from my Ubuntu CD and had Ubuntu install on the USB Drive. Took the USB drive off, and put it back in the laptop. It seems to work except it looks like it was installed with my desktop hardware. Also, every time it boots it starts at a recovery screen asking if for several boot options (including win7 which does not exist on the laptop!).
