Ubuntu :: Sound Or Network Icon Missing From Indicator Applet?
Feb 10, 2011
I have an annoying problem. It started with the network icon in the indicator applet in gnome-panel. It just disappeared! Somehow I managed to get my network icon back (perhaps after a restart), but as soon as it showed up, my sound icon disappeared.
I followed some advice I saw somewhere that said to add another indicator applet. When I did I had my network icon on my pre-existing indicator applet and a sound indicator in the new one, but no network icon. Because I needed the sound icon, I closed the original. But, I'm still stuck with no network icon now. This is pretty frustrating.

I have already removed all the apps related to chatting/mail/social, but the icon doesn't disappear. If I remove Indicator applet I loose volume icon, which I actually want to keep.

I'm using a tablet computer in portrait mode and had to switch to Thunderbird because of display layout issues. I would like the mail icon on the top menu bar to refer to Thunderbird but have not been able to figure out how to do so.

I am looking for a way to edit the default programs the mailon, included with the indicator applet, on the task bar uses. More specifically, I would like a way to integrate "checkgmail" instead of evolution.I did:Code:locate indicator-appletand it printed several possible files, none of which look like they could be edited in this way

I made a fresh install of Lucid, but I miss under status widget that controls the pidgin's status in the top panel near turn off button, a blank field where you can type in your personal status message. Like one in the attachment below. What am I actually missing?

Alright, at first, the volume control went missing from the indicator applet, but then re-adding it to the panel didn't do anything but add a mail/chat applet. So I tried to reset the indicator applet settings with this code...
And now all that happens when I add the indicator applet to the panel is that the text: "No indicators" pops up where the mail/chat applet was before. Is there a way to get the volume applet back into the panel?

I installed indicator-applet-complete and all the other indicator apps (applet, datetime, message, me). I know the me menu is suppose to show my user name and icon above the text box but I'm not seeing it. is there some way to fix this? Also the text box is dark, I've seen screenshots where is is white. The text I type would be easier to see if the box was white. Any ideas on how to fix this?
(btw how do I post an image to show you guys what i'm talking about? do I need to upload to another service and link to it?)

I recently moved to an area where many people have wireless networks, so when I click on the wireless connection icon in the indicator applet on the gnome-panel, the list of available networks doesn't always list my network. How do I connect to a wireless network (already listed in the Network Connections in the Preferences menu) without using the applet on the panel?

To satisfy my sound stream control needs, I installed PulseAudio in Kubuntu 10.04 amd64. It's working perfectly, but the (Gnome?) PulseAudio applet's icon is missing, i.e., in the systray and in the program menu (for the PulseAudio device chooser) the 'white page with blue question mark' icon is used. Which package do I need to install to get the right icon, or, how can I find out which icon exactly is missing, or, how can I set an alternative icon?

In 11.04 on a Dell Latitude D610 laptop, there are two logins. User1 has sudo privs, User2 does not. When either user logs in, network-manager picks up on whatever remembered wireless network is available, connects, and the nm icon shows in the panel. If the other user logs in (via Switch User), the connection persists, but the nm icon does not show in the panel.
Under 11.04 it appears there is no way to put the nm icon back in the panel, even when the connection is set to "available to all users", and even when the user missing the icon is User1 (who has sudo privs). If control is now switched back to the first user who logged in, the nm icon is still there, and the system is still connected, but if that user logs off (rather than clicking Switch User), the connection is dropped, and when the other user gives their password to resume their session, there is now neither connection nor an icon with which it can be re-established.
This would appear to be a bug, but is there a way to ***FORCE*** the nm icon to appear in the panel? The connection is already set to "available to all users", and doing a networking start does not do anything. Under 11.04 it appears that there is no way to make any icon appear in the panel if it is not already there.

I thought I was removing the chat status piece of the indicator applet (I know what it is now, didn't then), but I accidentally removed the whole thing. Now when I figured out how to put it back on the panel, I can't get it back to where it was (which was to the RIGHT of the system date/time applet). How can I do this as well as move the indicator applet that has the volume control in it?

I was using both the Indicator Applet and the Notification Area applets in my panel but realized that very often when I started the system, the icons of these applet appeared mixed. Some items were duplicated (for example the keyboard indicator) where others were missing (sometimes the battery indicator, sometimes the sound indicator, etc). When that happened I had to remove them and add them to panel again.
This seems to be a bug that makes one applet interfere with the other (maybe because there are some items that appear in both but when you add both initially nothing is duplicated but after a system restart the problem happens). After searching for some way to fix this apparent bug without success I decided to remove the Indicator applet and keep just the Notification Area.
It works but then I don't have the sound applet anymore, because it was part of the Indicator Applet.
I searched for a standalone sound applet but I couldn't find any. Do you know of any such applet that I could install in the system? If I can find any it would be fine to me and I would be satisfied using just the Notification Area.

I removed the "indicator applet" from the default gnome panel at the top of the default Lucid desktop. Doing so resulted in me losing the ability to control the sound from the panel, which I value so I put it back.Once I restored the indicator applet to the panel, the nm-applet went missing. I'm still connecting to my home network with no problem, so the function is there, but the little icon that updates when you're trying to connect, shows signal strength, and other available networks is now missing. This I've searched the problem and haven't found any solutions that work, I think because of the new applet integration, but I'm very surprised this hasn't been found by someone yet!

My family uses a computer running Ubuntu 10.04. We each have a separate login. This computer connects to the internet via wifi.
A behaviour which I have noticed is as follows - the first user to log in gets the network manager applet icon. So they can control the network connection. Any other user that subsequently logs in does not.
Now this is a real pain in the butt as sometimes our wifi connection drops and I might have left my wife logged in and used the 'switch user' function to get access to my login. The only way I can access the applet is by switching back to her login.
Is there any way to make this appear in everyone's login's at the same time?

I was running Ubuntu 9.10 on my HP G70 laptop and did an upgrade using upgrade manager to Ubuntu 10.04.
Since I haven't been able to get wifi connection or wired working. The Network Manager applet is missing from the notification area and if I try to run nm-applet manually it says it is already running. I tried killing the process and then running it manually in the terminal and although the process appears to be running it is missing from the panel.
Booting into the live cd has the applet working fine so something in the upgrade process must have failed.
I tried changing the theme to see if it displays in other themes but had no luck.
I also tried to log into kde but kde seems to be broken. When I log into it after the splash screen all I get is a black screen with only my mouse pointer.

I have just started using fedora 13 and I am not sure if i am in the right area but here goes...today I was online in my fedora 13 partition on my laptop and I had been online for quite a while then I shut down my machine to recharge the battery then a couple hours later I turned it back on and all of a sudden my network manager applet was missing and I could not connect to the internet, I opened firefox and tried to get to my homepage but it basically just told me that I wasnt connected..
I suspected at first for some strange reason that MAYBE it was my NIC so I booted up into my vista partition and low and behold the internet works fine, so the problem is on the linux side, I have tried every command nm-applet but it just keeps saying an instance of nm-applet is already running, I have no clue how to restore the network manager and get my internet back and the only other piece of information I have is that earlier today I did do a bunch of security updates but the internet was working fine all day even after several reboots through out the day.

In my top right corner I got all my Ubuntu appindicators that come with Ubuntu 11.04. I also have Dropbox, caffeine and screenlets. Problem is that I cant click on dropbox, caffeine, battery indicator, wlan or sound indicator until I first click on messages menu and slide over to appindicator that I need. When screenlets appindicator is not present there is no problem. Its the same when I had Jupiter installed.
