View 1 RepliesI have a system Intel sound chips running Slackware 13.1, full install. The sound is very low, whether through speakers or headphones. I have tried many things from searches online and especially here at LQ, including kernel module params, /etc/asound.{conf|rc|xxx} configuration, reading everything under /usr/doc/alsa..., etc... no joy. But at the end of the day I still remain unclear on any systematic method of troubleshooting alsa/chipset problems. So I am asking here for a systematic guide to troubleshooting and configuring alsa problems, including low sound in particular, but alsa setup and configuration generally.

On the console I can switch the ttys and enter my login credentials. After that I see the GNU/Debian Linux welcome message an no prompt. The system seems to hang. I'm able to switch the tty again and login with the same result. (I tried that three times now and I start running out of ttys.) A search on the Internet suggested some ressoucre shortage. How could I release some resoucres than? How could I further investigate the situation before just trying a hard power off?
My problem started only after I upgraded my hardware. I'll describe the problem and the changes that led to it.
Problem: I have to restart my computer a second time before my icon set and controls are shown properly. The first time I boot up, I get an ancient looking set of controls. (By controls, I mean buttons, window splitters, etc.). My custom icon set is replaced by an ancient looking icon set I've never seen in Ubuntu before. (Maybe it is a Debian default? It certainly isn't stock Ubuntu). The Gnome panels are completely different from normal too. I simply reboot again and everything comes up the way it should. Every time I start my computer, I have to restart a second time. After that, no problems until I need to shut it down and start again.
I'm running a relatively new installation of Ubuntu 10.10. I changed the theme to a bisigi theme [url] and everything was fine. No problems at all until...
Changes: Then I upgraded my video card from an older nVidia to a GT430. I had to change a couple things in xorg.conf. For that, I just used the suggestions made by the nVidia settings utility. I also upgraded my mobo and RAM (from 4GB to 16).
These problems started only after I upgraded my hardware. Of course, the hardware upgrade involved the above noted software configuration changes. (xorg.conf was the only required change.)
I'm looking for ideas on how to troubleshoot this? I don't even know the first step. For example, what logs should I check? Should I suspect a hardware problem (e.g., bad video card) or is this software/configuration related?
I have an oracle database that is getting file i/o errors. I don't think it is the fault of oracle, but the nfs mounted filesystems. So ... to troubleshoot my next step is to see if Linux is having trouble with i/o. These are nfs mounted and there are many files located on the filesystem which is having the error. The error only occurs on one file.Does anyone know how to turn on logging for any errors received? I assume I need need logging for nfs daemon, but not sure. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu on my small 64GB SSD alongside my main drive for storage. I got everything set up just how I like it (customized clearlooks with Ubuntu Mono Light icons) the same as I have it on my laptop. I disabled all system sound effects. This morning, I wake up to it having a different icon set, and the menus having an identical grey scheme. In addition, the Ubuntu system sound effects are playing, even though in the settings it says they are disabled.I'm not really sure what's wrong! It's the same in both compiz and metacity. Here's a screenshot. Note how the boring old-style theme is applied in the update window and the menu at the top, yet the customizing themes window has the correct appearance for the buttons (funny coincidence)EDIT: I think I've narrowed it down to gnome-settings-daemon. When I try to initialize it via the terminal I get this:
** (gnome-settings-daemon:3852): WARNING **: Failed to acquire org.gnome.SettingsDaemon
** (gnome-settings-daemon:3852): WARNING **: Could not acquire name
Using Natty Narwhal, sound works, but the icon disappeared up in the panel. Not that big a deal, other than it shouldn't have happened, so its go t me curious.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI bought a $400 Dell Vostro V130, and decided to put 10.10 netbook remix onto it. (Vostro V130 owners: after the reboot into the new system, there is no GUI. worse, after log in, a startx means the screen goes dead. fortunately, a power key event is still detected, so reboot still works cleanly. after I did a full apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade, and apt-get upgrade, the screen and remix worked.)
I would now like to increase the bass, systemwide (so that ..... gets sound that is a little better). the speaker icon on the top right gets me into sound preferences, but I do not see an equalizer.
Deleted mute / unmute speaker (sound) icon from panel?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've got no sounds from my audio card. I have established this knowledge by confirming it by using two separate sets of speakers. In addition, there is a weird muted icon in the top left corner. I've looked through the sound settings, including alsamixer, and I cannot find whats muted. Please see attached screenshot. As you can see, my output it muted, but the speaker is back (see a) in screenshot), not white like it normally is (see b) in screenshot). How to restore sound from my audio ports?
