Ubuntu :: Shortcuts - Impossible To Remove A Shortcut?
Oct 12, 2010
I am setting up my shortcuts on Ubuntu (System -> Preferences -> Keyboard Shortcuts) and there is no way to remove a shortcut. On the bottom of the screen says "(...) or press space to clear.", however, it doesn't work. The only way I found to remove a shortcut was to set up another shortcut with its keys, so it will be disabled.

First off, I have been quite clumsy lately. I recently poured water into my computer by accident; and it works somewhat fine, though the keys A and E do not work. At this point I am using an external keyboard, but since it's a laptop and I am using it at school, that is not what one would wish for. So, my question is; is there any way which will allow me to use the Keyboard Shortcuts to make a shortcut which will for example use ALT+Ctrl+<button> to write the letter A?
My second question is; Do anyone know what has happened with what I will describe in the following text; or perhaps recognice the problem and a solution? One of my friends has installed XUbuntu on his netbook. It has been running just fine; and for a while after he upgraded to 9.10, his computer went somewhat broke. It boots up fine, and it loads the login screen; but instead of being able to log in, it switches to a terminal. We have tried using it to log in, but as none of us are any good with the terminal we have not succeeded.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 alongside OSX on my unibody aluminum macbook. I've been setting it up, but I was wondering if there were any applets that could display things like CPU temps (maybe even RAM usage? I'm thinking along the lines of the iStat menubar app, but of course I'm willing to try out anything). I tried searching the Software Center, but couldn't quite find what I was looking for. I was exploring the keyboard shortcuts, and I was wondering if there was a way to set a shortcut to empty the trash? Like in OSX they have shift+apple+delete.

Our office just switched from CentOs to Fedora and I'm trying to get everything set up. Everything is working so farbut im having a problem with my mounted cifs drives. They mount ok, I made directories in /mnt where the drives are readable and accessible. I'm only missing the shortcuts to the mounted drives in nautilus and on the desktop. I've checked the gconf editor and the volumes should be visible. Is there an extra option i have to add in the fstab line to get the shortcuts or something like that?

Is there any way to disable shortcut keys in XFCE Terminal ? I can't seem to bind the shortcut keys, and F1 especially really gets in the way for some programs. Have no clue who thought it would be a good idea to bind F1 to a stupid help screen, when many terminal programs need this. I am using fluxbox, so maybe this has something to do with it.

I have Ubuntu 11.04, upgraded from 10.10, and I'm logging into the default Ubuntu, Unity. In Dash, if I search for "firefox", I get three results:
Firefox Web Browser
Mozilla Firefox
Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode)
Clicking Firefox Web Browser brings up Firefox just fine. But both Mozilla Firefoxes do nothing. I have a feeling that they're left over from Wine, but I'm not sure. The Uninstall Wine Software program doesn't show Firefox, but I may have uninstalled it through there a long time ago.
I want to remove these shortcuts from Dash. I tried checking the Main Menu program, but Mozilla Firefox isn't in there (though Firefox Web Browser is). I looked in /usr/share/menu/, and found a file called "firefox". That file specifies a title of "Firefox Browser", so I'm not sure if it even applies. The command it gives, "/usr/bin/firefox", is good, anyway. I don't see any other firefox related file there.
So, does anyone know how I remove those shortcuts from Dash?

I recently installed Acetone ISO in the hopes of installing a program, but alas it doesn't do what I need it to (run the MDF file like a disk rather than showing all the files in it, and because this is a multi-disk thing I'm installing I'm kinda stuck now) and I noticed it would make a new virtual drive every time I mounted an image, and I wound up with four of them, and each one had its own shortcut on my desktop. Well, I removed the program and deleted the folder it created, but these shortcuts are still on my desktop. And they are UNTOUCHABLE!
The command line ls -al ~/Desktop/ will show everything on the desktop BUT THEM, they have no permissions, and cannot be moved, copied, or deleted, because Ubuntu can't find volume information on them. I reinstalled the program to see if anything would help, and I noticed that the drives would go away if I unmounted the image (I coulda sworn I told it to before, but it didn't want to...) but now these drives are errors to the program, and I still can't remove the shortcuts.

There are these shortcuts in the GTK3 file chooser: [URL] ....
With the exception of "desktop" which I included in the red box by mistake, I don't want those shorcuts to be there. I've even deleted most of those folders from my home directory because I have no use for them, but the shortcuts remain even after the folders are gone.
How to remove/disable these shortcuts? And while I'm at it, I notice that it's not using my selected icon theme for those icons. Any way to make it use my choice of icon theme?

I want to be able to remove the first character of a line when I highlight multiple lines in gedit. Example:
%Example is
%Commented Code
%Uncomment using this shortcut
I would then highlight/select these lines, and remove the first character to make it look like this:
Example is
Commented Code
Uncomment using this shortcut
I'm pretty sure there is an actual shortcut for this. If there is another text editor on Linux that it would work in, it would be nice to know how to do it in that editor as well.

After installing 10.04 netbook remix on my acer aspire one, I have experienced all sorts of trouble. I can't get online, not with the wireless network, or with a usb-cable directly from the router. When I try to install the hardware drivers i get a message: there are no hardware drivers installed or something like that. There are no other OS on the harddrive, just 10.04 netbook remix. Another problem is the startup. Sometimes it boots right away, other times I've have to restart/reboot. 3-4 times before it works. How comes? Is there any way to download the missing packages/firmware to a usb-stick and then install it on the the netbook?

Since 2 days, when I type the lowercase 'a' letter in a terminal, nothing is written (it's not the case for the uppercase 'A' letter).
The matter appears with all terminal's software (guake, Terminal, xterm...).
The only way for me to type the 'a' letter is to type 'Insert' key before.
I tried many solutions but the matter is still here.
Here, there is some clarifications and some solutions I tried:
-If I copy and paste a text, 'a' don't appears. For example, if i try to copy and paste
'sudo apt-get install'
'sudo pt-get instll' will appears
-The matter appears 2 days ago. Before that, I removed the .gconf file
-It's not a fresh installation of ubuntu but an update from karmic to lucid. When i was under karmic, I was using KDE. Then I did an upgrade, then I tried Xubuntu and Lubuntu and finally I moved to Ubuntu. The first week under Ubuntu (Gnome) was without any matter and 2 days ago, this matter appeared.
-I tried this following command line:
xmodmap -pke >fichier.conf
and the file called "fichier.conf" (I'm french) contains this line:
keycode 24 = a A a A ae AE ae AE
-When I type this line:
printf "x61
"
a 'a' appears in my terminal.
-In tty1 and all the other programs, 'a' appears without any trouble
-I tried with other users in my computer but the matter is still the same no matter wich user I use.
-I tried to change fonts of my environment and I also tried to change fonts only for the terminal but whithout success.
-I tried to change the layout of my keyboard.

Currently i'm using a HP 6735b laptop. Everything is fine just one problem which is ATI driver. This one gave me:
1. Impossible to start up Kubuntu, they show welcome screen and stuck for century. LiveCD version of Kubuntu and KDE environment via Ubuntu is fine (since i already installed ATI driver).
2. Without ATI driver, whenever i unplug my A/C power the computer will be frozen. After installed driver everything will be fine.
What kind of problem is that, compatible with ATI or serious bug. Karmic Koala 9.10 is absolutely perfect.

I've been tinkering around with Linux over the past couple weeks. I've played arodn with both Ubuntu 10.10 and Linux Mint 10 and it's been a 99% positive experience. I have noticed an issue regarding my internet connection.
I've noticed when I download a file in Ubuntu (either from the software manager, BitTorrent or just a regular download in Firefox), browsing the web on my computer becomes near impossible. The download itself runs at a good speed for our DSL connection (around 200 KB/sec) but anything else near a standstill. Just loading ESPN.com on my PC can take a minute or two. Someone else playing a game in the house will go from a regular 100-200 ms ping to 5000+ right when the download starts. When I stop the download, internet browsing and gaming speeds go right back to normal.
The weird thing is the same thing happened when I installed Linux Mint 10. When I boot into my Vista partition, this isn't an issue. Downloading a file in Vista doesn't affect anything, but it's happening every time in both Ubuntu and Linux Mint.

I am trying to install Debian for my best friend by resizing his Windows partition so that I can install Debian on a separate partition. But, I get this message when I try to resize Windows: "for some unknown reason impossible to resize this partition. Check /var/log/syslog or see virtual console 4 for details." I do not know how to check virtual console 4 for details and besides I won't be able to interpret it. I also tried defraging the Windows hard drive several times and using several livecds with GParted to try to resize. They all failed.
