Debian :: Impossible To Resize Windows Partition ?

I am trying to install Debian for my best friend by resizing his Windows partition so that I can install Debian on a separate partition. But, I get this message when I try to resize Windows: "for some unknown reason impossible to resize this partition. Check /var/log/syslog or see virtual console 4 for details." I do not know how to check virtual console 4 for details and besides I won't be able to interpret it. I also tried defraging the Windows hard drive several times and using several livecds with GParted to try to resize. They all failed.

The openSUSE 11.2 installation disk doesn't want to let me resize my NTFS-based WinXP partition; it just says that the fs is inconsistent and that I should check this issue in windows... But even though I've scheduled diskcheck to run after a reboot, it doesn't! Is there some way of "forcing" the diskcheck to run upon startup, or how else can I resolve this issue (without re-installing my entire system)?

I installed kubuntu onto my secondary drive witch was half full at the time of the installation. I used all the available space for the install. Now i have kubuntu installed and want to increase the linux partition. But GParted and Partition Ediditor show the resize button as inactive.

Recently I decided to give Ubuntu 10.04 a try and I didn't like it + some drivers were really buggy so I deleted the partition. I can't boot. I covered the process of how I fixed it on my blog here. Anyhow, now I'd like to expand my windows partition as there's 175gb of unallocated space. The problem is gparted won't let me expand it (trying this via liveCD). I've tried mounting/unmounting it's no luck.

I have understood that Vista does not always play nice with third party partitioners and that it was best to use the tools *within* Vista to change its size.
I do not know, but the same might apply to Windows 7? Anyway I understand Windows 7 also has its own resize tools.
My advice to newcomers with Vista (or Windows 7) has been to use the Windows inbuilt tools to resize and then to leave un partitioned space on the drive, because until recently the Ubuntu Live CD has included an option 'Install into un partitioned space' or similar. Which was very easy.
However, with Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop CD the same option does not exist, so for beginners, or any nervous newcomer, the only practical option in most cases is to use the 'resize' facility in the Ubuntu installer.
This is a circular situation, if the Ubuntu facility resize is recommended to be avoided.
I would very much like to avoid having to tell them to use the 'advanced' option. Most of them are pretty jittery, from having used Windows for years.
I am aware that the 10.10 Alternate CD still includes 'install into un partitioned space'. Do I now tell people they need both a Live CD for initial tests and then also an Alternate CD for install?
They would see the install invitation in the Desktop CD live session and have to disregard it.
The Ubuntu 10.10 installer is, on the face of it, getting more friendly towards nervous newcomers.
Are the warnings about third party partitioners still relevant?

Regarding the installation of ubuntu 10.0.4 on my HP pavilion DV5000 laptop.
I previously installed windows 7 in my laptop and i would like to have ubuntu and windows 7 in dual boot. in order to do that i need to free up some space to be able to install to create partitions for ubuntu and the swap even if I have 30GB of unused space.
When i launch the live cD and i reach the step 4 ubuntu is actually recognising three operating systems installed:
- windows 7 (loader) under dev/sda1 (92,86GB) NTFS
- windows NT/2000/XP (which is corresponding to my "HP recovery" partition) under dev/sda2 en FAT32 (6,2GB)
- windows XP embedded (I don't unerstand what it is) under dev/sda3 NTFS (1,1GB)
when I go to the step 6 to modify the size of sda1 to free up some space, i don't have the possibility to change it, i can read "unknown" under the used space collumn.
I also tried to resize this partition using gparted but unfortunately i had the same problem, when i select it all the options to modify it are greyed out and i can notice a key near the hard drive logo (is it locked ?).

I need to resize (increase) LUKS partition. I have found a lot of manuals, but they are just for LVM volumes(I dont use LVM and I dont plan to use it). I have HDD splited to the 4 parts:
sda1(/)
sda2(LUKS)
unalocated
swap
I want to increase LUKS partition, by using the part of unalocated space.
BUT I dont want to do the following:
Backup data from LUKS partition
Delete LUKS partition
Create new bigger LUKS partition
Restore data to the LUKS partition

I recently installed Lenny and used the "Guided - Use Entire Disk" option.I made separate partitions for root, /etc, /var, /home, /usr and swap.I trusted that the auto partitioner would choose sensible sizes but possibly that was a bad move, root is only 340Mb and is full.

I would like to resize the /home partition but it is mounted and when umount is run, it errors with 'busy'.
System Configuration:
I installed jessie on a laptop with one SSD. I used guided partitioning and selected the whole drive with multiple partitions. The /home now takes up 420 GB. I would like to reduce that to 20 GB to make room for another partition.
What are the methods reduce this partition?

I have around 30gb of free space in my partition table immediately before the Linux partition. I want to resize my linux partition to take up this space.
I tried booting with live cd, sucessfully umounted the hard drive but found I could not resize the partition. On clicking the 'edit size' button, partition manager recognised the free space before the partition but when i reduced this, the 'ok' button was greyed out. (it was not greyed out for the windows partition so I could, in theory, increase the windows partition to take up the free space but this is not what i wanted to do).
I am pretty sure that I had managed to unmount the drive correctly as the padlock symbol had dissapeared (I took the attached screenshot, which does show the lock symbol, after rebooting into my normal system).
Anyone got any ideas as to why it wont allow this? There is no reason why i can resize the partition to take up the free space BEFORE it is there?

I am having issues with Grub 2 after installing Debian 7.8.0.The computer is a HP Pavilion 500-307nb. I made the original harddrive /dev/sdb and inserted a Samsung Evo 840 as /dev/sda. From the original hard drive (/dev/sdb), I wiped the windows partition, but left all other partitions unchanged (in case I would ever want to recover the desktop to its original state). I replaced the wiped windows partition with a swap partition and an LVM partition.These are my hard drive partitions:

The partition /dev/sda3 has 2 logical volumes with filesystem ext4 that I mount to / and /home.The partition /dev/sda2 is mounted to /boot..When I install like this, Debian installs fine, however Grub2 is not installed correctly.Debian installs grub-pc which seems not able to boot the gpt partition. So I boot the Debian CD in rescue mode and execute:
mount /dev/sda2 /boot
aptitude purge grub-pc
aptitude -y install grub-efi
After rebooting, I come in the grub rescue shell, which says: error: no such device: 986f2176--4a4b-4222-83b9-8636a034b3c7.
When I then enter in the grub rescue shell:
set boot=(hd0,gpt2)
set prefix=(hd0,gpt2)/grub
insmod normal
normal
Grub and Debian start up correctly.why can Grub not start up automatically correctly? Where does the UUID 986f2176--4a4b-4222-83b9-8636a034b3c7 come from? I have reinstalled Grub several times, I have reinstall Debian several times, I have even wiped all partitions from /dev/sda and recreated a new gpt table with parted and manually set the partitions in parted. Still on each reinstallation, Grub fails because it cannot find exactly the same UUID. Since this UUID is always the same, it must be stored somewhere, but it cannot be the partitions, I have wiped them and the partition table several times.
I did though a firmware update of the Samsung Evo 840 before reinstallation, could this be a cause?Also the problem is not in grub.cfg. Grub starts correctly if I enter the commands above in the grub rescue screen and the UUID value does not appear there.

I was using an extremely common debian based distro, but I have been rebooting my pc non stop for the last two days trying to get my nvidia fx5200 drivers to work. (it is just IMPOSSIBLE to disable the nouveau driver, i have tried blacklisting it, editing xorg etc, nothing works) I need to know if there are many issues with getting nvidia graphics cards to work in debian. it seems like the last 18 months worth of releases on all the other debian based distros have completely broken all support for any nvidia card made prior to 2011. i know for a fact that in windows xp all my hardware works perfectly, but i really dont want to have to use that, i have been a linux user for more than 5 years now, but all i am really looking for now is reliability. i want to be able to use the nvidia-173 driver, as i know that this allows me to watch the movies i take on my dv camera, and ......

My last laptop was replaced (I gave it to my step-dad, his laptop broke and I bought myself a new one).
I am running Squeeze (as I was on my other laptop) and everything is fine except for the games. On my other laptop games like OpenArena and Warzone 2100 ran perfectly fine, but on this laptop, they are impossible to play. The game will open, but everything is so slow and choppy that it takes a couple of minutes to even move the cursor to the exit game buttons.
My current laptop is an HP ProBook4525s with the current specs:
AMD Athlon Dual-Core P340 2.2 GHz processor
2GB DDR3 RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 Graphics Card
I'm not sure what other information to put here, I've tried searching how to fix this and most people say to lower the resolution and details for the games but that doesn't work, heck, even Tux Kart is too slow to play!
When I installed squeeze I was informed that I didn't have the rtl8168d-2.fw firmware for my laptop, I'm not sure if that helps here at all (can't seem to find what it is for, the only things that google gives me are very technical with fixes that involve re-compiling the kernel).

I installed Fedora 13, but did not expect it would set up a LVM on the entire remaining unpartitioned space.
So I'm now trying to resize the partition the LVM is on. I already resized lv_home using system-config-lvm... however now lv_swap resides at the end of the physical volume. If I assume correctly that this also means that it resides at the end of the sda6 partition, I need to move it in order to resize the partition.

How would I go about moving lv_swap right next to lv_home? And how can I actually resize the partition? gparted doesn't seem to be able to resize lvm2 partitions.

I'm running Fedora Core 14 on my server and in copying over all the stuff I had backed up before the install, i recived the message that one of my volumes was nearly out of space. Since this is just a partition on my hard drive, I could resize it to make it larger, but I don't know how. It's a ext4 partition on my 2nd hard drive.

I have a default centos 5.x install on an 8GB hard disk. (This means the volumegroup is mounted to / ). I've increased the size of that hard disk to 12GB. (so yes, fdisk says my disk is 12GB)
I now need to increase the LVM to use the 12GB instead of the 8GB. Every single article I've come across says:
"run lvextend on your vg you want to increase, then unmount, reboot, run live cd or whatever and then run resize2fs".
But of course lvextend +anyG returns an error saying not enough free extents
lvextend +100%FREE returns saying the extents matches extents
How can every the google result be wrong? How can I simply tell this LVM that it's now a few gb larger?

I've been upgrading a Fedora server over the years. Once it was Fedora Core 2 now it is Fedora 10. Now I want to continue the upgrade process and upgrade the server to Fedora 11. The problem is that the boot partition is 100MB but Fedora 11 wants a 200MB boot partition. Looking at Fedora 13 it seems a boot partition of 500MB is gonna be the norm. I would just resize the boot partition but there is a LVM directly after it taking up the rest of the drive.
How do I resize my boot partition in this scenario?
My current line of thought is to use G4L to backup both partitions, then restore the boot partition to a large drive, increase the size with parted then restore the LVM backup after it.
So far G4L has been reluctant to backup the boot partition of Fedora on a test rig to an NTFS drive. Not sure if I should be backing up the image to a ext3 drive.

I want to install linux next to my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and changed my windows partition from 700GB to 100GB. Now I want to use the other 600GB for linux and formatted it in Paragon Partition manager.
But when I try to install OS 11.4 I get the message that it can't resize the partition because of the type (which is NTFS) and it wants to delete the whole disc including the windows partition. How do I fix this? Do I need to delete the 600GB partition again in Paragon so its unallocated and then use Suse on it?
Or can I better first install Linux and then Windows? (for next time so it would be nice if the above worked out)

I have read several tutorials on how to install it on my Laptop with pre-existing XP without destroying XP in order to get a dual-boot system. For example on those two pages...

...it reads that in the Ubuntu install menu I have to select "manually edit partition table", which I have found and selected, and then I should supposedly be able to edit the size of the desired partition. However, no option for changing the partition size appears. Instead I get a menu where I am asked to determine how I want to mount the partition (as ext4, ext3, etc.) and if I want to format it. However nowhere it mentions anything related to "change size" or similar.

I made three partitions when I installed Ubuntu. Ubuntu 20.1 gig. windows 20.1 gig. data 110 gig
I no longer want or need the windows partition. so I used system > administrator> disk utility to delete the windows partition. Now to hopefully prevent a problem. How do I enlarge the Ubuntu partition without causing problems?
Can I do it while I am ubuntu or do I need to do it from the live cd or what?
