Ubuntu Servers :: Windows DHCP Server - Multiple Boot Servers ?

Apr 1, 2011

I'm curious if anybody can shed some light for me in this department. We're in a large environment with a Windows DHCP Server. We have been tinkering with LTSP on Edubuntu as thin and fat clients. It works great, but right now we just have 1 server handling the lab, which works fine unless we want to expand, which may be very possible.

These are the instructions I received:
Login to your windows server and load the DHCP configuration screen
Create a DHCP reservation for the MAC address you obtained
Add the configuration options below to enable the machine to boot from the LTSP server
017 Root Path: /opt/ltsp/i386
066 Boot Server Host Name: <ip address>
067 Bootfile Name: ltsp/arch/pxelinux.0 # Specify CPU architecture in place of 'arch', for instance 'i386'

From: [url]

I'm curious, what if I want to have multiple Ubuntu servers on the network that I want to have bootable? For example, let's say I have 3 labs, and 3 servers. Server A to Lab A, Server B to Lab B, and Server C to Lab C. I want all C's computers to boot to C, and B to B, A to A, etc.

1 - How would I add multiple entries on the Windows DHCP Server to allow all 3 (A B C) servers to boot?

2 - How would I be able to isolate the clients so ONLY Lab A clients boot to Server A, etc?

Ubuntu :: System Hanging On The Grub2 Boot Up?

Mar 1, 2010

I've read the various Grub2 posts and even the guide, but unfortunately for me I can't seem to come up with an answer to my problem. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a new hard drive on a friends laptop, but I have problems with the system hanging on the Grub2 bootup.I'll post the screen

recordfail=1
if [ -n ${have_grubenv} ]; then save-env recordfail; fi
set quiet=1
insmod ext2
set root=(hd0,1)
search --no floppy --fs-uuid --set ac1b1d46-bac1-4140--953e-70a8a61be8b0
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic root=UUI=ac1b1d46-bac1-4140-953e-70a8a61be8b0 ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-14-generic

If I hold down the left shift and then press E to edit and remove the search --no floppy line entirely then press ctrl-x the system boots just fine. I then opened up a terminal and did sudo update-grub to try that but it didn't fix it. Is this a problem in my bios looking for a floppy, I tried with the boot from floppy enabled and disabled (but always as the 3rd boot option) the floppy is not installed. Is there anyway to edit the file and save it so it will boot up? I was trying to research that and could not come up with it.

Ubuntu :: New User - Updates Installed - Hanging Boot

Dec 29, 2010

I've got 10.4.1(rev190?) installed in what I guess is Wubi and have been running dual boot for a couple of weeks now. My other OS is XP. I recently ran the updater then shut the computer down for a week. I can't remember now if I had to restart to complete any updates or not but my laptop battery is fried so once I unplugged it after it completed shutdown all power was removed from the system for 9 days. Today I tried to boot Ubuntu and after I chose it from the boot menu it flashed some sort of message about WUBILDR really quick (I wasn't able to read it all) then went through its normal boot until the Ubuntu splash screen where one dot went red and the system hung.

I allowed it a good 15 minutes to see if it would unhang but no dice. It boots fine on XP. Any advice? I'm reading the Wubi Megathread right now but as I'm new to Ubuntu I figured I'd check to see if anyone else experienced these particular problems here, too. Right now I'm going to download the Ubuntu installer to a disk to try some of the Megathread troubleshooting.

Ubuntu :: Boot Hanging At Checking Battery State

Jan 16, 2011

Today when I went to boot up my computer, it hung at "Checking battery state...". I have never had any problems before this, and have been using 10.10 for several months. The only change I made that I can think of was installing the Wacom Control Panel. I have no idea what to do, and really, really don't want to reinstall Ubuntu unless there's no other option.

Fedora Installation :: F13 Is Hanging On Boot

Jun 11, 2010

I've been having trouble with my desktop ever since I upgraded from F 11 to F 13 last night. Finally, however, I got the proper version of the nVidia drivers installed. However, it's stopped completing boot. I've edited grub at boot to get it to show the boot messages and find that the last thing it reports is success in registering the binary for Windows applications. After that, it just sits there, doing nothing. I can go to an alternate console an d log in, but that's all.

If I log in and run startx, it fails. It reports that it was unable to load the nvidia module and "no screens found." Does anybody know what I should do next?I've removed both kmod-nvidia and akmod and am going strictly with the nouveau drivers.I've booted, used Ctrl-Alt-F2 to get a console, logged in as root and run the setup program to configure X to run that way, then returned to the main console and logged in as myself. Shortly after my wallpaper shows up, and long before I have a working desktop, it goes white and stays that way. Aside from getting a different video card (The old one worked Just Fine right up until I upgraded.) what else can I do?

Our mail server keeps on hanging after a while. This happened after there was a breakdown in electricity supply and the server room air conditioners stopped working for almost half a day. We are not sure whether this is a server hardware problem or a coincidence with a break-in attempt or malware activity.

Following are the message from the server log code...

I seem to have the following problem with Ubuntu. I have two PATA drives in my server. The OS is loaded on the first drive which is the master and the server functions fine. This is what I want to do is to have two 120 gig drives in the system and mirror them. When I put the second drive in set to be a slave the bios see's both drives. After the bios shows what is in the system it hangs with the cursor in the upper left hand corner and will not boot beyond that point. If I unplug that second drive it will boot up with no issues.

Ubuntu :: Upgrade Hanging Up The System - How To Get Old Style Boot Up Screen

Feb 15, 2011

I just recently installed updates from Ubuntu and the system is hosed. I get the Ubuntu screen that flashes real quick then it goes to the Nvidia like cursor. I am pretty sure something is hanging up on startup. I cannot get to a console, cannot do anything but reboot with ctrl alt del. Then I get the briefest flash of the screen but not long enough to see where it was hanging up at. I ran the same updates on this machine, if I could get the old school informitive startup screen instead of the windows like tell you nothing start up screen I might at least know where to start looking. Right now I have zero clue as to what the updates broke. I cannot even get to log files as there's no console, no ssh, nothing. version is Ubunto 10.4 LTS.

Fedora Installation :: 12 Hanging On Boot (most Times)?

Nov 26, 2009

I have just installed Fedora12 x86 64. On booting more often than not it hangs just before completing the login screen.I will try some of the options in the wiki. In the mean time has anyone else experienced this and resolved it.The odd thing is although the keyboard is not on, (num lock light goes out as boot starts and only comes back on if it has fully booted), the mouse will move around the screen but the click has no effect.Note the same behaviour was shown on the x86 64 live cd which I needed to install to enable me to create a bootable usb stick from the x86 64 DVD.

OpenSUSE Install :: LiveUSB Hanging At Boot?

Nov 26, 2010

I have been trying and failing to install openSUSE 11.3 for the last couple of days to replace my Ubuntu install.

I have downloaded the openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso (have downloaded numerous times in case it was a problem with the mirror I used) and done the standard dd stuff, as well as trying it from my windows partition with the ImageWriter app.

When I try and boot with the USB drive plugged in my system hangs at the boot screen and the usb drive starts flashing as if it is being read, this continues indefinitely and never goes beyond the boot screen and i eventually take the usb drive out and restart.

When plugging the drive in when Im in ubuntu it shows up as "openSUSE Live CD GNOME" and all the files seem to be there. In gparted it doesn't recognise the partitions or anything but I presume this is normal... Also reduces the size of my drive to the size of the Live CD but again I presume this is normal...

I have also tried installing using the NET iso however I have exactly the same outcome.

This laptop is a Acer Travelmate 8371 and has had Ubuntu, Mint, and Windows 7 all installed from the same USB drive. There is not optical drive so I have no other ways to install openSUSE.

Server :: Large FTP Transfers Hanging CentOS?

Feb 3, 2011

I've got a server running CentOS 5.5. I used the automated iptables config tool included in the operating system to allow traffic for vsftpd, Apache and UnrealIRCd. When I send large files to FTP, even from the local network, it works fine for a while and then completely times out... on everything. IRC disconnects, FTP can't find it and when I try to ping it I get "Reply from 10.1.10.134: Destination host unreachable" where ..134 is the host address for the Win7 box I'm pinging from. This is especially frustrating as it's a headless server, and as I can't SSH into it to reboot I'm forced to resort to the reset switch on the front, which I really don't like doing.

Edit: the timeouts are global, across all machines both on the local network and users connecting in from outside.

CentOS 5 Server :: Apache Hanging On Forum Reply Posts?

Apr 1, 2010

I recently moved my site to a new server (Apache 2, PHP5, MySQL5). The site is an Invision based forum. Every few posts / topics it just hangs. The data has been written because if you stop and reload, the post / thread is there. I thought it was a write issue initially, but nope. So, the data is written but the page load never completes. It doesn't leave the page where the data has been input.

Whats the best way to trouble shoot this issue? The only thing I have done recently is reduce my MySQL timeouts, but I can't see that being an issue as the values are still big enough and there are no mentions of timeouts in the MySQL log. (For the record there is nothing in PHP's error log either)

I have checked my server-status. It all looked ok, but I have a suspicion I was hitting my ServerLimit, so I doubled that. Also enabled my Keepalives. Will keep an eye on it.

Some additional info;

1. Apache is throwing seg faults, but enabling core dumps does not produce them.

2. I have tried disabling the modules in apache but it just stops things from working.

3. I fear it may actually be DNS related. If I watch Live Headers in Firefox, absolutely nothing happens during this 'hanging' period. After that, the responses come back fairly promptly.

Ubuntu Servers :: 10.04 Server (no GUI) Hangs On Boot

Apr 30, 2010

I just installed 10.04 i386 Server(release version)last night on an older IBM workstation (sorry, for the life of me can't remember model and I'm at work now); P4 2.4, 512Mb RAM, generic Intel graphics. This was a base install (aside from OpenSSH) with no window mgr. The HDD was wiped during the install and GRUB2 wrote to the MBR.

The install went smoothly, and on the soft reboot after the install I got a shell and was able to login, etc. and even SSH in.I unplugged the machine, moved it, booted, and got a cursor in the upper-left of the screen for about 3 seconds, and then the monitor would enter power save mode. (I tried 2 different models of monitor). While the cursor was on the screen the HDD access LED was blinking with activity, but that would stop right before the screen would enter standby. Tried a few reboots with the same result.

I'm thinking this is not a video driver issue (as similar threads have suggested),because the splash screen for the install disc renders properly and on the first successful boot the shell rendered appropriately at a high resolution.I can hold down shift to enter the GRUB2 menu, which also renders at a higher-than-text resolution and is defaulted / displays the correct options.

Most other threads with a similar yet non-video issue centered around GRUB2 issues with a dual-boot machine, which mine is not.I did go in via rescue mode (off the install CD -- the rescue option of the GRUB menu has the same result as a standard boot), and checked that my grub.cfg was correct, and I ran grub-install to no avail, and also ran grub-mkconfig on a subsequent boot to no avail, yet the grub.cfg generated appeared identical to the original generated during install.

The partition/file system is default layout.

20 Gb IDE (/dev/sda)
/dev/sda1 /boot ext2
/dev/sda2 Ext

[code]....

I'd be happy to give more info if someone has a troubleshooting direction in which to go.

Ubuntu Servers :: Server Hangs On Boot

Jul 27, 2010

I'm trying to track down a problem with my server. Basically, I can get it to boot with a LiveCD and do rescue stuff with it - I just can no longer get it to boot. I've been slowly working my way through all of the error messages that come up during the boot process, and knocking them off one by one. Right now, they're fairly minor.

I'm trying to find out what the big issue is by looking at the logs. The last thing that it does is bring up apache2, says [OK] and then hangs. I've tried to do ls -lustR on /var/log to see what's the last log touched, and that's syslog or boot.log, but the last entry says something along the lines of Apache2 is up and running.

Where else should I look?

Ubuntu Servers :: Server 10.04, One Interface Not Brought Up On Boot?

Jan 7, 2011

I'm having an odd problem with Server 10.04. I have two interfaces but only one interface is brought up on boot - and it's not always the same interface. Usually eth0 fails and eth1 comes up fine, but sometimes eth1 fails and eth0 comes up. I'm using the same config that was previously used on Server 8.04, but never had this problem on 8.04.

/etc/network/interfaces:

Code:
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback[code]....

Once the system has booted, if I run /etc/init.d/networking restart, then both interfaces come up fine. However, having read that this is now an upstart, I also tried service networking restart, but get:

Code:
restart: Unknown instance:
Don't know if that's significant or not.

Cannot find a single problem with networking reported in log files, other than bound services failing to start as a result of the interface not being up (dansguardian, squid, dhcp which are all bound to eth0, and therefore fail when eth0 doesn't come up. And when eth1 doesn't come up, the only process that fails to run is clamav-freshclam). Although at one point I did see something about interfaces being renamed which seemed a little odd.

I could just have networking restarted automatically once booted, but this obviously isn't a solution to whatever is causing the problem. There is quite a bit running on the server: Samba/LDAP domain controller with roaming profiles, squid & dansguardian with LDAP auth, postfix & dovecot with LDAP auth, mailscanner, dhcp & ddns, strict iptables policy with nat... so I'm not sure if any of those could have any bearing on interfaces?
