Server :: Large FTP Transfers Hanging CentOS?

Feb 3, 2011

I've got a server running CentOS 5.5. I used the automated iptables config tool included in the operating system to allow traffic for vsftpd, Apache and UnrealIRCd. When I send large files to FTP, even from the local network, it works fine for a while and then completely times out... on everything. IRC disconnects, FTP can't find it and when I try to ping it I get "Reply from 10.1.10.134: Destination host unreachable" where ..134 is the host address for the Win7 box I'm pinging from. This is especially frustrating as it's a headless server, and as I can't SSH into it to reboot I'm forced to resort to the reset switch on the front, which I really don't like doing.

Edit: the timeouts are global, across all machines both on the local network and users connecting in from outside.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Hangs During Large File Transfers?

Aug 1, 2010

I recently built a home media server and decided on Ubuntu 10.04. Everything is running well except when I try to transfer my media collection from other PCs where it's backed up to the new machine. Here's my build and various situations:

Intel D945GSEJT w/ Atom N270 CPU
2GB DDR2 SO-DIMM (this board uses laptop chipset)
External 60W AC adapter in lieu of internal PSU
133x CompactFlash -> IDE adapter for OS installation
2(x) Samsung EcoGreen 5400rpm 1.5TB HDDs formatted for Ext4

Situation 1: Transferring 200+GB of files from an old P4-based system over gigabit LAN. Files transferred at 20MBps (megabytes, so there's no confusion). Took all night but the files got there with no problem. I thought the speed was a little slow, but didn't know what to expect from this new, low-power machine.

Situation 2: Transferring ~500GB of videos from a modern gaming rig (i7, 6GB of RAM, running Windows7, etc etc). These files transfer at 70MBps. I was quite impressed with the speed, but after about 30-45 minutes I came back to find that Ubuntu had hung completely.

I try again. Same thing. Ubuntu hangs after a few minutes of transferring at this speed. It seems completely random. I've taken to transferring a few folders at a time (10GB or so) and so far it has hung once and been fine the other three times. Now, I have my network MTU set from automatic to 9000. Could this cause Ubuntu to hang like this? When I say hang I mean it freezes completely requiring a reboot. The cursor stops blinking in a text field, the mouse is no longer responsive, etc.

Networking :: Large File Transfers Start Fas Then Drop To A Crawl?

Jul 19, 2010

I need to transfer 330G of data from a hard drive in my workstation to my NAS device. The entire network is gigabit and being run with new HP procurve switches. All machines have static IP addresses. The NAS is a Buffalo Terastation PRO which has the latest firmware, is set to jumbo frames, and has just been upgraded with 4 brand new 500G drives giving us a 1.4TB raid 5 setup. My workstation is a dual Quad core xeon box running on an Intel S5000XVN board with 8G of ram. My OS is Ubuntu 10.04 x64 running on a pair of Intel X25 SSDs in a raid mirror. The data drive is a 500G SATA drive connected to my onboard controller. The file system on the SATA drive is XFS. This problem was ongoing before I got my new workstation, before we had the GB switches, and before the NAS got new drives. When I transfer a small file or folder (less than 500M) it reaches speeds of 10-11 MB/sec. When I transfer a file or folder larger than that the speed slows to a crawl (less than 2MB/sec). It has always been this way with this NAS. Changing to jumbo frames speeds up the small transfers but makes little difference in the big ones. I verified with HP that the switches are jumbo frame capable.

Ubuntu Networking :: Large File Transfers & How To Set Up A Netbook Desktop Combo

Jul 11, 2011

I tried using ssh between my netbook and desktop, but it was going to take around 30 hours to transfer 39GB over the home network. Also SSH is very sketchy and often drops connections.I've been messing with it all day and I'm quite frustrated. What I'm looking to do is use my netbook as more of a primary computer and the desktop as a storage computer. Not quite a server, because I'd like to still keep a GUI on it. I'd like to be able to keep my music and movies on the desktop and stream them to the netbook (SSH sucks for this, always drops connections). I've already set up the web client for Transmission bit torrent client so I can torrent on a machine that's almost always on and connected.

Is there a better setup for all of this? I like the netbook because of the portability; I like the desktop because it's always connected (for torrents) and it has a larger storage capacity. It would be mainly used around the house. I would like to back up a file or two while abroad, but I'm not looking to stream music while I'm across town or anything.

CentOS 5 Server :: Mail Server Keeps On Hanging / Stop It?

Feb 1, 2010

Our mail server keeps on hanging after a while. This happened after there was a breakdown in electricity supply and the server room air conditioners stopped working for almost half a day. We are not sure whether this is a server hardware problem or a coincidence with a break-in attempt or malware activity.

Following are the message from the server log code...

CentOS 5 Server :: Apache Hanging On Forum Reply Posts?

Apr 1, 2010

I recently moved my site to a new server (Apache 2, PHP5, MySQL5). The site is an Invision based forum. Every few posts / topics it just hangs. The data has been written because if you stop and reload, the post / thread is there. I thought it was a write issue initially, but nope. So, the data is written but the page load never completes. It doesn't leave the page where the data has been input.

Whats the best way to trouble shoot this issue? The only thing I have done recently is reduce my MySQL timeouts, but I can't see that being an issue as the values are still big enough and there are no mentions of timeouts in the MySQL log. (For the record there is nothing in PHP's error log either)

I have checked my server-status. It all looked ok, but I have a suspicion I was hitting my ServerLimit, so I doubled that. Also enabled my Keepalives. Will keep an eye on it.

Some additional info;

1. Apache is throwing seg faults, but enabling core dumps does not produce them.

2. I have tried disabling the modules in apache but it just stops things from working.

3. I fear it may actually be DNS related. If I watch Live Headers in Firefox, absolutely nothing happens during this 'hanging' period. After that, the responses come back fairly promptly.

1. ease of deployment (both servers and websites themselves)
2. patch management

CentOS 5 :: 5.2 Installation Hangs On Server With Large Number Of Drives?

Apr 6, 2009

I am attempting to upgrade a system from 4.7 to 5.2 using a (now) DVD drive attached to the onboard IDE. Originally I had tried using a remote NFS image and a USB stick but I thought maybe there was a problem with the image. I can get up to the point of the installation of selecting the keyboard for the system and then it freezes and never goes any further. It doesn't appear to be a kernel panic since I can still switch between consoles.

I've got an MSI K9NGM2-FID with 14 drives in it. It serves as a file server for our backup server. It's got a secondary 4 port Silicon Image SII 3114 SATA card using the sata_sil module, and an old IDE Promise FastTrak TX2000. Technically I could have 16 drives but the 750W PS is walking the fine line on tripping it's self-breaker with the 14 drives and 7 fans. I would like to NOT have to disconnect all of this to do the upgrade.

I thought maybe that running the install using the "noprobe" option would help so it didn't detect and load the modules for the Silicon Image or the Promise cards and detect all of the drives but it still gets stuck on the step after selecting the keyboard. The installation info console and the dmesg console don't really provide any useful information. The installation console says:

INFO : moving (1) to step welcome
INFO : moving (1) to step language
INFO : moving (1) to step keyboard
INFO : moving (1) to step findrootparts

And the last lines of the dmesg console says:

<6>device-mapper: multipath: version 1.0.5 loaded
<6>device-mapper: multipath round-robin: version 1.0.0 loaded
<6>device-mapper: multipath emc: version 0.0.3 loaded

Is there a hidden "debug" option that will turn on a lot of extra logging?

CentOS 5 :: CentOS 5.3 Install Hanging After Keyboard Selected?

Jul 15, 2009

I am having a problem during a fresh install of CentOS 5.3 on an IBM Intellistation Z Pro 6221. I have tested the installation media (CDs). The install runs normally until I am asked to specify the appropriate keyboard.I take the default (English) and hit next. The keyboard and mouse keys become unresponsive though the mouse pointer moves. I can go no further than this. This behavior is the same whether I install in text mode or graphic mode. I have tried the noprobe installation option without success. The box I am doing the install on dual boots fine between Windows XP and CentOS 4.7 currently.Does anyone have an idea of what the problem may be?

Server :: Making Incremental Copies/transfers With Rsync In Cygwin?

Mar 21, 2011

As an example, I have two servers, sm-i222 and fileserv. sm-i222 is a Win2k3 system running cygwin. fileserv is a linux box running RHEL 4.7. sm-i222 maps /cygdrive/c to the c: drive and /cygdrive/d maps to the d: drive(actually a single 4TB RAID). from the sm-i222 server /cygdrive/c I call a small script from the crontab. The internal IP for fileserv is 10.0.0.7. See below.

cd /cygdrive/d/fileserv/home
rm -rf /cygdrive/d/fileserv/home/*
rsync -avz -e 'ssh -c blowfish' root@10.0.0.7:/home/* .

These three lines perform well in that they make a full transfer of the fileserv:/home/ directory on fileserv to the appropriate place on sm-i222 using rsync. I use rsync instead of scp because I have to traverse subdirectories and symbolic links in the /home/... filesystem on fileserv. What I'm looking to do is use rsync to do an incremental transfer/backup of only the files that have changed since the last full backup. I'll manage the times I do this manually or in crontab. A colleague says this is do-able, but not how. Rsync.org says this is do-able but not how. Cygwin says this is do-able... see rsync.org. I believe what I'm looking for is a single rsync line like I have above that only transfers the changed files on fileserv to sm-i222.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Telnet Localhost 25 Hanging After Escape Character Is '^]'?

Dec 5, 2010

I have recently upgraded to a VPS for the purpose of web hosting a group of sites related to my business. The reason for the upgrade was because we wish to run a shopping cart software which required greater memory for PHP and the VPS was the most economic solution. So, I have very basic linux knowledge but I am the definition of a newbie when it comes to going further than just scratching the surface of server configuration! I have successfully hosted our main site for a number of weeks but recently the postfix service stopped sending mail. I have Plesk Control Panel installed and postfix continually shows as not started even though in SSH the service status is definitely running - I have gone through the troubleshooting checklist here (http://www.postfix-book.com/debugging.html#d0e6) but can't get any further than section 2.1 as when running the host command (#host relay-test.mail-abuse.org), I get # -bash: host:command not found. I've gone further in the document but not found any issues...

When postfix was working properly (i.e. sending emails!), the plesk CP showed the service as started and all emails from the website were sending as normal. The mailq command is showing the messages stuck in the mailq and the maillog shows the following:- http://pastebin.centos.org/36446 - these are the latest few pages. To check the configuration and basic elements I have flushed the mailq (which shows a stack of messages waiting) and I have also spent a long time (2 weeks) reading up on the parameters that should be in main.cf and master.cf.I have found that when I 'telnet localhost 25' I get the following response...[root@s15397216]# telnet localhost 25Trying 127.0.0.1...Connected to localhost.Escape character is '^]'.

CentOS 5 :: Blank Screen After Fresh Install / Why System Hanging Before GRUB Menu?

Mar 28, 2011

I installed CentOS 5.5 last night using the DVD ISO (from a USB drive thanks to the Universal USB Installer). I selected the Server and Virtualization packages, and finished the install all the way through. At the end, the installer asked me to remove any installation media and reboot the system. After rebooting, the system hangs on a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner that does not accept text. This is before the GRUB screen appears. For partitioning, I created a 4GB swap partition on sdb and a 16GB ext3 partition on sda, mounted at /, with the remaining free space on sdb mounted at /storage.

Does anyone know why this system is hanging before the GRUB menu?

Server :: Windows 7 To Linux Server Print Job Size Very Large

Jan 21, 2011

I'm new to setting up Linux Servers. I've setup a Ubuntu 10.10 Server along with CUPS and I'm using Webmin to talk to the server. I have a HP PSC 1315 Multifunction printer connected via usb to the server. Using the CUPS web interface I am able to get the server to detect the connected printer and it identified the HP PSC 1310 Series drivers.

When I printer a test page from the server's screen the print job goes through ok and the size was about 5k.

I then setup a samba share to allow my Windows 7 machine to share the printer. Windows 7 is able to pick up the shared printer correctly and I used the default HP 1310 Series drivers. When I tried to send a test page to the printer, that single page ended up being 3887kb and I also tried printing out a single paged word document which ended up being over 7MB.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Configuring For Large Number Of Tcp Connections?

Jan 24, 2011

i've got a select based application that wants to support a large number of mostly idle connections. the code is java and works on windows, suse enterprise linux, mac os x. it does not work on centos 5.5 (32-bit, 2.6.18 kernel, 1G of memory).

i've read and followed the directions in various articles about tuning linux for large numbers of connections (including the C10K problem), and gotten the number of sockets up to 3200.

these didn't make any apparent difference:

[URL]

on windows, i can get up to around 78,000.

on suse enterprise linux (a few years ago), i got up to 90,000. that's where i got bored and stopped.

on my mac laptop with os x (snow leopard), i got up to 10,500.

i have used ulimit -n 10240

my current goal is 10k sockets.

the test is that i'm opening one socket at a time until it fails. when it fails, many of the sockets which have already been opened also fail, in one giant cascade. sounds like a buffer / memory problem.

each group of 64 sockets gets a thread to manage select calls for them. thus i'm only using around 61 threads total when it fails.

Server :: JFS On Large LVM Volume (35TB) Fails

Apr 25, 2010

I am running Debian Lenny 2.6.26-2-amd64 and I have the following setup:
3 Raid6-Volumes each 19TB size (md0,md1,md2)
I would like to join the three of them to one large LV (of 57TB) formatted with a jfs fs.

I installed:
jfs_mkfs version 1.1.14, 06-Apr-2009
lvm version
LVM version: 2.02.39 (2008-06-27)
Library version: 1.02.27 (2008-06-25)
Driver version: 4.13.0

Prerequisite: the md are assembled and have synched:
Code:
cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [linear] [multipath] [raid0] [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [raid10] .....

I used jfs_mkfs on each of the three mds and mounted the drives to run some checks and they worked without a problem. I am pretty sure the drives/raids are OK. Then I created the VG "pod" with the three drives as members: .....
Then I created a 40TB LV for testing
Code:
lvcreate -L 40T pod
which gave me this
Code:
lvscan
ACTIVE '/dev/pod/lvol0' [40.00 TB] inherit

Then I went on formatting the drive using
Code:
jfs_mkfs /dev/pod/lvol0
Still - everything fine.

When trying to check the partition with jfs_fsck I get:
Code:
ujfs_rw_diskblocks: disk_count is 0
Unrecoverable error writing M to /dev/pod/lvol0. Cannot Continue.

The really funny thing is that I don't seem to get the error if I try to run the thing with a 25TB LV everything looks fine: There is nothing in syslog that would point to the source of this error. Also - if I try to mount the 40TB partition, everything is fine - but when I try to write to it, the whole system hangs and there is no way to recover.
