Ubuntu Servers :: 10.04 Server (no GUI) Hangs On Boot
Apr 30, 2010
I just installed 10.04 i386 Server(release version)last night on an older IBM workstation (sorry, for the life of me can't remember model and I'm at work now); P4 2.4, 512Mb RAM, generic Intel graphics. This was a base install (aside from OpenSSH) with no window mgr. The HDD was wiped during the install and GRUB2 wrote to the MBR.
The install went smoothly, and on the soft reboot after the install I got a shell and was able to login, etc. and even SSH in.I unplugged the machine, moved it, booted, and got a cursor in the upper-left of the screen for about 3 seconds, and then the monitor would enter power save mode. (I tried 2 different models of monitor). While the cursor was on the screen the HDD access LED was blinking with activity, but that would stop right before the screen would enter standby. Tried a few reboots with the same result.
I'm thinking this is not a video driver issue (as similar threads have suggested),because the splash screen for the install disc renders properly and on the first successful boot the shell rendered appropriately at a high resolution.I can hold down shift to enter the GRUB2 menu, which also renders at a higher-than-text resolution and is defaulted / displays the correct options.
Most other threads with a similar yet non-video issue centered around GRUB2 issues with a dual-boot machine, which mine is not.I did go in via rescue mode (off the install CD -- the rescue option of the GRUB menu has the same result as a standard boot), and checked that my grub.cfg was correct, and I ran grub-install to no avail, and also ran grub-mkconfig on a subsequent boot to no avail, yet the grub.cfg generated appeared identical to the original generated during install.
The partition/file system is default layout.
20 Gb IDE (/dev/sda)
/dev/sda1 /boot ext2
/dev/sda2 Ext
[code]....
I'd be happy to give more info if someone has a troubleshooting direction in which to go.

I'm trying to track down a problem with my server. Basically, I can get it to boot with a LiveCD and do rescue stuff with it - I just can no longer get it to boot. I've been slowly working my way through all of the error messages that come up during the boot process, and knocking them off one by one. Right now, they're fairly minor.
I'm trying to find out what the big issue is by looking at the logs. The last thing that it does is bring up apache2, says [OK] and then hangs. I've tried to do ls -lustR on /var/log to see what's the last log touched, and that's syslog or boot.log, but the last entry says something along the lines of Apache2 is up and running.
Where else should I look?

Ubuntu server hangs when I boot with a wired Ethernet connection. The last thing I see in the console is code...
I have no problem when I boot to a Wifi connection even when Samba and openssh-server are installed. I see the same sequence of lines in the console as I reported initially (including Reloading, Restarting), but then the output continues with
* Starting the Winbind daemon winbind
Both the wired and wireless connections use dhcp. Obviously, I installed the OS using a wired connection, so it worked reliably once. I'm stuck.
P.S. I tried dhclient -r before rebooting. The machine did not shut down correctly and when I forced a reboot it appeared to hang at the usual place. However, after a long delay it proceeded to boot. Perhaps I am observing a delay due to a very long timeout. I will try another reboot now and check again in the morning.

I've got a new Ubuntu 10.04 server install with a new 3 disk RAID 5. The boot disk is separate, not part of the RAID. I was trying to practice what I would do if a disk died to recover the RAID, so I unplugged one of the three disks. The machine now just hangs on startup. It shows fsck at the top of the screen but doesn't got anywhere from there. If you press a key it shows the Ubuntu splash screen. If I plug the disk back in, everything boots up normally. So, my question is, how do I get the machine to boot with one of the RAID members missing? I know I can recover it using the Live CD, but it would be nice to be able to get back into the machine without the CD.

The attached log file includes two crashes/reboots within the past day or so I have recently started trying to set up / manage a Linux (Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS) server in our data center (all other servers are Windows boxes). The server periodically hangs and becomes unresponsive and I'm at a loss to find anything in any log that indicates a specific cause. Sometimes it's up for hours, sometimes days (14 days at longest). Plugging a monitor in to the machine after a hang shows nothing at all. In an effort to troubleshoot the problem we've tried disabling APIC, more out of "educated desperation" than anything else. Unfortunately we are limited in some of the troubleshooting we can do, as we have a single client website hosted on the box (the reason we set it up) so anything that involves significant downtime is a problem.
As this is our first attempt at setting up a linux box, we are using a "well equipped" desktop grade machine but not what I would call "server grade" hardware. This is a standalone box, not a VPS. We are using a hardware, not software, RAID array and have plenty of memory in the box.
Caveats / Background:
I am relatively new to Linux in general. I spend much more time writing code than managing servers. I'm comfortable with working on the box, but I'm not really a sysadmin guy. I'm comfortable with the command line but have more experience with OS X (BSD). I am unsure of all of the tools / information / Logs that may be available, though I try to be thorough in checking what I do know. I did not physically configure the hardware so I'm not sure of all of the specs but I can get any info I need to troubleshoot. I may be skipping very basic steps or missing obvious places to look for information without knowing it.
A little more detail:
Real memory: 8GB
Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS
Hardware RAID 10
Managing sites with Webmin version 1.550
Server is in a remote data center. Hands on-troubleshooting is difficult. We have attempted two Linux setups at this point. The first was on a hardware config identical to this one, but with no actual pieces of hardware reused. That attempt was using CentOS and we were attempting to set up CPanel. We scrapped that install because of this same problem (periodic crashing / hanging). The second attempt (this one) is showing the same behavior. The only thing I can really see in common are the hardware configuration (though CentOS & Ubuntu may have more in common than I think).
The box will run fine for hours, days, or even weeks, and then just stop responding entirely. I check all of the logs I know to check (primarily messages, syslog and kern.log) but I don't see anything that seems like an error to me. I do see lines that I don't understand that may or may not be problems, such as:
Code:
rsyslogd: [origin software="rsyslogd" swVersion="4.2.0" x-pid="814" x-info="http://www.rsyslog.com"] rsyslogd was HUPed, type 'lightweight'.
Most of our syslog entries seem to be logs of webmin related cron jobs running. My gut tells me that there is possibly some component in our configuration Linux does not like or needs a driver update (maybe the raid card for example), but I'm unsure of how to do more to track down or determine what that might be. Guess and check is expensive. Another thought I've had is that one or more of the cron jobs that are running are tripping something up, but it doesn't appear to be reproducible on demand and, again, I'm at a loss on how to test that theory any further. The same cron job does not appear to be running each time the server goes down. This is a portion the log just prior to our last hang:
Code:
Aug 8 11:00:01 linhost01 CRON[10771]: (www-data) CMD ([ -x /usr/lib/cgi-bin/awstats.pl -a -f /etc/awstats/awstats.conf -a -r /var/log/apache2/access.log ] && /usr/lib/cgi-bin/awstats.pl -config=awstats -update >/dev/null)
[code].....

I run a website that a very steady flow of traffic and Im seeing recent issues that I just dont like. Server is 10.04.2 on a supermicro i7-950/6gb RAM with two 500gb Samsung F3 drives in a software RAID1 (1x5400, 1x7200) and for several weeks, its been running very well. Recently, Im seeing the server hang for 5-20 seconds. IOwait goes through the roof, nothing can write to the disk. Apache logs stop, redis fails to rebuild caches, mysql errors and then it continues and moves back to normal operation
/ is ext4, the kernel was 2.6.32-server-x64 but since updating to 2.6.38-server-x64, the issue has dropped from maybe once per 10 minutes to once per 15 minutes. 3 IOstat copy/pastes show this when it hangs.
Code:
Total DISK READ: 0.00 B/s | Total DISK WRITE: 0.00 B/s
TID PRIO USER DISK READ DISK WRITE SWAPIN IO> COMMAND
[code]...
No smart errors or smart diags show any issues with any of the disks and kernel.log shows near nothing other than a process hang, 120 seconds about 5 days ago.

I have been trying to set up an LDAP server for a development environment as part of an internship for a week now, and I cannot get past this point. I have been following the 10.04 server guide to set up LDAP here: URL...Once I get to the following point in the guide, it just hangs:"As an example of modifying the cn=config tree, add another attribute to the index list using ldapmodify:"I've been working on this for a week and can't understand why this won't work. I am fairly certain that I've followed the guide to a 'T.'Any idea why am I receiving a permission denied error? Is this a permissions issue with one of the config files?

I have a PXE server which installed DHCP TFTP AND NFS service. and set them up followed by [URL].
The boot process hanged here:
ipconfig: eth0: SIOCGIFUNDEX: No such device
ipconfig: no devices to configure
[-n eho]
. /tmp/net-eth0.conf
/init: line 3: can't open /tmp/net-eth0.conf
...
What I did try to work around is,
1. Set portfast to all the ports connected the PXE server and client.
2. Edit pxelinux.cfg/default, try different setting in "ip=" (I did not find any menu in the internet which explain to to configure this file).

I'm curious if anybody can shed some light for me in this department. We're in a large environment with a Windows DHCP Server. We have been tinkering with LTSP on Edubuntu as thin and fat clients. It works great, but right now we just have 1 server handling the lab, which works fine unless we want to expand, which may be very possible.
These are the instructions I received:
Login to your windows server and load the DHCP configuration screen
Create a DHCP reservation for the MAC address you obtained
Add the configuration options below to enable the machine to boot from the LTSP server
017 Root Path: /opt/ltsp/i386
066 Boot Server Host Name: <ip address>
067 Bootfile Name: ltsp/arch/pxelinux.0 # Specify CPU architecture in place of 'arch', for instance 'i386'
From: [url]
I'm curious, what if I want to have multiple Ubuntu servers on the network that I want to have bootable? For example, let's say I have 3 labs, and 3 servers. Server A to Lab A, Server B to Lab B, and Server C to Lab C. I want all C's computers to boot to C, and B to B, A to A, etc.
1 - How would I add multiple entries on the Windows DHCP Server to allow all 3 (A B C) servers to boot?
2 - How would I be able to isolate the clients so ONLY Lab A clients boot to Server A, etc?

I'd like to eliminate anything unnecessary from my Ubuntu Server box (on a Compact Flash IDE drive) and set it up to boot into RAM. I've seen ways of getting a live CD to do this and seen other distributions that are designed to do this, but since I'm familiar with Ubuntu, I'd like to be able to get rid of my swap space and make the existing installation boot to RAM.

I'm having an odd problem with Server 10.04. I have two interfaces but only one interface is brought up on boot - and it's not always the same interface. Usually eth0 fails and eth1 comes up fine, but sometimes eth1 fails and eth0 comes up. I'm using the same config that was previously used on Server 8.04, but never had this problem on 8.04.
/etc/network/interfaces:
Code:
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback[code]....
Once the system has booted, if I run /etc/init.d/networking restart, then both interfaces come up fine. However, having read that this is now an upstart, I also tried service networking restart, but get:
Code:
restart: Unknown instance:
Don't know if that's significant or not.
Cannot find a single problem with networking reported in log files, other than bound services failing to start as a result of the interface not being up (dansguardian, squid, dhcp which are all bound to eth0, and therefore fail when eth0 doesn't come up. And when eth1 doesn't come up, the only process that fails to run is clamav-freshclam). Although at one point I did see something about interfaces being renamed which seemed a little odd.
I could just have networking restarted automatically once booted, but this obviously isn't a solution to whatever is causing the problem. There is quite a bit running on the server: Samba/LDAP domain controller with roaming profiles, squid & dansguardian with LDAP auth, postfix & dovecot with LDAP auth, mailscanner, dhcp & ddns, strict iptables policy with nat... so I'm not sure if any of those could have any bearing on interfaces?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and a small Windows 7 partition (cuz I can't get Ubuntu to run my MSI TV@nywhere plus card but that's another issue).I can log into Windows fine. If I choose Ubuntu, however, the boot process will go thru a few screen flickers. Then one of two things happens:1) I get a scrambled up pixelated image (not sure what it is) for about 3 second, then it goes into the login screen and I can log in normally.2) I get the scrambled up pixelated image and it hangs. This happens about 4 times out of 5 when rebooting.
I do have an nVidia card and a beta driver (they published it the 21st, I believe, of this month) but this happened long before that. It's happened ever since I installed any of the drivers (I've tried a couple different versions, hoping to fix this) for my card.
My system is a frankenputer:
Phenom II quad core 3.0 cpu
nVidia GeForce BFG 6600
4G DDR3
500G drive
Note: I do have 3D rendering when I finally get into the desktop. Everything works great, except that when I'm playing my mmorpg, Regnum Online, it freezes the entire computer and I have to reboot (not sure if that has anything to do with it or not).In case it's needed, this is my grub:(Second note: I'm sorry for the length of the post but I don't know how to upload documents/files to show)
# from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub

HW config is: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition, MSI 785GTM-E45, 2X 1Gb Kingston HyperX PC2-8500. I have set up GRUB to dualboot openSUSE 11.2 and WindowsXP. Initially i had set up system with defaults: CPU@2600MHz (200X13) and therefore RAM@800MHz. Both openSUSE 11.2 and WindowsXP worked just fine. Memtest86 found no problems.
But after a while i decided to change this setup to: CPU@2500MHz (250X10) and therefore RAM@1000MHz, as it promised better overall performance. And now Windows still boots and works better then before. Memtest86 still can't find any problem. But openSUSE 11.2 hangs at boot. I've suspected cpufreq governor, but changing from Ondemand to Conservative in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq doesn't help.

Ran 'do-release-upgrade -d'on my server running Hardy. No problems during the upgrade.Rebooted after the upgrade completed, and I was presented with the new plymouth screen. This sucks for servers. It sat there displaying the logo for ~5 minutes.Hit CTRL+ALT+F1 through F8 and didn't see anything on the virtual consoles. Finally figured out that I had to hit ESC on the plymouth screen to actually see what was going on.It said /dev/sdi1 had problems along with /dev/md0.It sat there forever with no fsck status and no HDD lights blinking.
SysRq+REISUB and tweaked the boot parameter to remove 'quiet splash' and appended 'S' for single-user mode.Got the attached screenshot. The box has been sitting like this for ~15 minutes. Not entirely sure what to report a bug against at the moment. Plus the somewhat-new requirement of running 'ubuntu-bug' is pretty retarded in this situation. (Yeah, I know I can add some string to the URL to get around it.Why is it such a pain in the *** to report a bug?)I'm going to do some more digging to try and find out what is dying during boot. The new boot process is a bit of a mystery to me still, so if anyone has pointers or any devs want more detailed information,

I recently installed an Ubuntu 10.04LTS server. I have zabbix-server on that machine, and I noticed that after reboot it won't start. Probabily, the mix of upstart and old init.d scripts result in zabbix starting when mysql is not active yet, in fact in zabbix-server.log I see it cannot reach db. I have a home file server that I am trying to upgrade to natty 11.04. It was running 10.04 and was behind on updates due to lack of an internet connection for several months. I didn't have any problems applying all updates (sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude full-upgrade) and then upgrading to 10.10 (sudo do-release-upgrade). I applied all updates to 10.10 (sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude full-upgrade) without any problems.
However I encountered problems trying to upgrade to 11.04.

Hangs indefinitely. I don't receive error messages, it just sits there. I have to escape from Screen and 'sudo screen -wipe' to try anything else.
I tried changing my repository list to point to a different mirror, but no change.
If I had error messages I would have more to go on, but at the moment I'm stuck.
