New Intel x64 system installed with Opensuse 11.1 (like the KDE 3.5 option) and has been running well until today. Booting stops at "starting jexec services". Even while booting under "failsafe" system halts at "starting jexec services". Unable to boot to command prompt to attempt repair. Ran "repair" option from install disc with no good results. Still will not boot past jexec services.

I have been trying and failing to install openSUSE 11.3 for the last couple of days to replace my Ubuntu install.
I have downloaded the openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso (have downloaded numerous times in case it was a problem with the mirror I used) and done the standard dd stuff, as well as trying it from my windows partition with the ImageWriter app.
When I try and boot with the USB drive plugged in my system hangs at the boot screen and the usb drive starts flashing as if it is being read, this continues indefinitely and never goes beyond the boot screen and i eventually take the usb drive out and restart.
When plugging the drive in when Im in ubuntu it shows up as "openSUSE Live CD GNOME" and all the files seem to be there. In gparted it doesn't recognise the partitions or anything but I presume this is normal... Also reduces the size of my drive to the size of the Live CD but again I presume this is normal...
I have also tried installing using the NET iso however I have exactly the same outcome.
This laptop is a Acer Travelmate 8371 and has had Ubuntu, Mint, and Windows 7 all installed from the same USB drive. There is not optical drive so I have no other ways to install openSUSE.
I just installed the LAMP server on my system then rebooted, expecting the daemons HTTPD, MYSQLD, FTPD, etc. to start. When they didn't, I didn't panic I just attempted to run "sudo service start httpd". Surprise, suprise - "command not found". how do I start these daemons?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI would like to create an alternative booting possibility in my GRUB menu that does not start some services (listed by chkconfig) like cups.
I would use this boot during travel where I surely does not need these services and shorter bootup time is preferable. Permanent removal of such services is not an option because I could not miss them during normal daily work.
I use Mandriva 2010 with the latest updates.
Every time I boot up OpenSUSE 11.3 it hangs at the same "position" for approximately 3 minutes and then continues to boot. Unfortunately I see no corresponding error log e.g. in dmesg output. Hence, I don't know what is the reason for that. Here is my dmesg output. The delay occurs at 20 seconds after beginning of boot process (line 1085). I also analyzed the boot process with bootchart.
My computer: Notebook Lenovo ThinkPad R400.
After upgrade of 11.1 to 11.2 I noticed that none of services that was started in 11.1 at boot are starting now in 11.2. I check run-level of services with

When I start services manually everything is OK, but on restart they do not starting. Another weired thing is that my SuSEfirewall2 is filtering everything on input, nevertheless my previous configuration is still there, but ports are closed.
during boot-up on my desktop, running openSUSE 11.4 with KDE 4.6.3, there are sometimes (not always) some failed services. Most of the time it is postfix and some other service. Today it is just mcelog. So when I switch to the first terminal by strg+alt+F1, I see that mcelog has failed.The system is running anyway, so I wonder if it is safe to turn them off? I would turn off postfix and mcelog. Do I harm the system with that? Would it boot again, after I have turned them off? Or is it recommended to let them stay as they are?As far as I understood, postfix is just a mailserver, which would be used, if I would run a mailserver on my own. But I donīt. I just read mails, via IMAP... But mcelog? Whats that?

I have installed ZendServer CE on my distro and I have tried to create a startup file in this way:I create the file httpd in the folder /etc/init.d
I run chmod 775 httpd
I execute chkconfig --add httpd on

System boots up to loading NVIDIA drivers, it shows mouse pointer then it hangs up!
This happened after brutal force rebooting, because system did not responded properly (especially Nautilus). Probable cause:
forget to unmount.cifs a windows shared folder in the network (mounted with mount.cifs). It happened to me already sometimes (to forget umount.cifs), but never ending with this permaenent hanging up)
-tried automatic system repair with suse boot DVD. It repaired something + changed the bootloader. Problem still there
-rebooted--> system hanging up after NVIDIA drivers. code...
I have installed many Linux distributions, but I have never tried openSUSE! So I thought it must be time to try it. I pop the dvd in(I checked the md5 of the iso and checked on the bootable disk) and when I go to install it pauses on the "Probe hard disks"Things I have done:
- Re-checking the integrity of the disk and iso.
- Tried booting with the safe kernel.
- Tried leaving it for ages
I am running 11.3 for about 4 months and it suddenly started to hang intermittently, sometimes many times a day. Once KDE restarted and other times the screen went black. Most of the time it was just hanging and I needed to force a shutdown. The only clue I got is KDE displayed a notification saying "Disabling IRQ #24" not long after it started to go nuts.
After searching around, I figured the problem was with my external video card so I pulled it out 2 days ago and so far it didn't freeze again. After searching around some more, I found many users fixed very similar issues by upgrading to kernel 2.6.35 and I am ready to go for this solution. But now, I couldn't find out how to upgrade the kernel. People said it can be done in Yast but I only see version 2.6.34. What is the easiest way to upgrade?
Fedora 14 is freezing while starting services. what I know is that the system is passing kernel verification. Is there a way to choose which service to start during bootup?

I went to Dolphin -> Settings -> Configure Dolphin -> Services -> Download New Services and from there I installed KDE CDEmu Emulator and MountISO. But neither of them is showing up in actual context menu. Neither in Dolphin -> Settings -> Configure Dolphin -> Services for that matter. I tried to install them as normal user and as a root. I went to have a peak in /usr/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/ but they aren't there as well... It's just me or lots of things seems to be not quite working in 11.3?
View 9 Replies View Relatedi have hd encryption activated on my swap and home disks. now every 20 min or so (not really periodic but definetly reproduceable) my system hangs completely for about 4 - 10 sec while the hd led is on. i have a dual core cpu which makes this even more odd. could this be a side effect of hd encryption especially on the swap partition?

I have webmin installed but I have been trying to do the majority of things via the command line. I now have davmail starting at boot but a lot of other services don't start anymore, including apache, mysql and webmin. Fortunately SSH still works and I can start apache and webmin from the command line without any problems.

When finishing the installation on that way, there are no menus so you can to simply nothing. checking the services are in rcX.d (using bum and sysv-rc-conf) Ensuring there's a .conf file in /etc/init (which there is).I can't see anything in syslog which would suggest if the system has tried to start these but failed, but then I may be looking in the wrong place. I think they're not starting at all. I wonder if it's something to do with the restore, perhaps symlinks?
I'm trying to install 11.04 natty on an HP Probook 6455b and failing.
Using two different burned cds I'm able to start the install process
1) I can get to the initial menu and interact with it to change command line options
2) I can boot the kernel and see services trying to start
At some point the system hangs and I suspect because upstart is starting services in parallel the console messages aren't showing the same consistent point for the hang.
with my last run using --verbose on the command line the last few lines are:
* Starting bluetooth
* Starting configure network device security
* Starting configure network device
* PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions
saned disabled; edit /etc/default/saned
Another run I just did (with network cable unplugged) ended with the same but also
* Stopping save kernel messages
I should note that the Pulseaudio line's asterisk is red or orange, does that indicate anything?
Mostly I'm looking for suggestions on how I can further debug and diagnose this problem to resolve it.
The system previously ran 10.10 fine and runs Fedora 15 (which should have a very similar kernel level) with no apparent problems.
Probook 6455 = basic HP laptop with AMD Phenom II mobile processor, 6G of RAM, ATI 4200 embedded graphics, etc, etc. Nothing special really.
I joined a company as an IT staff 2 months plus back. I now encounters a problem that the booting up hangs at the time when it is starting domino services. I have no clue where to look at and duno where to start checking. A little description of the server. : It's a lotus notes domino server for employees webmail service. -> Now it is down. it's an external dns server: recently high volumes of query cache denied surfaces. it's also our proxy server. The only way to get it up and running is to turn off domino service. The system is running still with high volumes of queries I last checked.
Althrough it can boot up now and DNS & proxy are running, I couldn't access the system anymore. It will hang when I attempt to log in from the command prompt. Below is an illustration:

-> The cursor comes down and just keeps blinking and nothing happens.
Remote access is not possible as it has sshd disabled by default. Our employees cannot access their webmail now, which is a major issue.
I installed OS11.4 on my old laptop, Compaq Armada E500., 512MB RAM, ATI Rage Mobility. During installation I chose "minimal server" and added some development packages, lxde and a little more. I chose to start in runlevel 3 which is full networking without X. Still, when computer is booted it tries to start Xorg which doesn't work because of some problem w driver. The start-up seems to stop there, it never loads completely - seems most things in runlevel 3 are not started (see below) I can manually login on laptop and fix it - but never permanently, same thing again after reboot.
I have checked /etc/inittab & yast - both states default runlevel is 3. I have checked services to be started both directly, browsing directory /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/, and with YaST, it is very clear X should not load during boot. But, as said, it does.. I don't really care about the driver problem right now, I can fix that later when I have more time. So how do I stop X from getting started automatically?
More info, if needed: The installation also stopped with message on tty1 "Starting YaST2" and tty8 showing errors with graphics driver (mach64). The system seemed to be installed though, so I simply rebooted (issuing "reboot" from tty2).

I'm not completely sure where it stops, network is configured but keyboard is wrong and mysql & everything after is not started, so somewhere between S02network and S06kbd. I'm going to use it as a server for testing purposes so no X is actually needed - however I do want to have X & lxde installed just in case, my Internet connection at home is terribly slow so I need most things I might need in the future installed today.
I had some issues with my system hanging on the automatic configuration of the install so I searched the web for the issue. After reading this thread: Hangs at end of SuSe 11 install I used acpi=off apm=off nolapci as the install options and it worked. My question is, do I need to add those options to the /grub/menu.lst or will the install do that?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed OpenSUSE 11.4 on a completely blank machine, empty disks, etc. using a Network Install. The install appeared to run OK, but when it rebooted to do the configuration, it hung. I tried a manual reboot a couple of times, then booted in FailSafe mode - came up OK and ran through the auto-config. Now, it still boots up ok in FailSafe, but in normal mode I get the wallpaper on the screen, but it hangs there.
View 9 Replies View Relatedso my server is doing fine, but there is one odd thing I would like to fix. When I start and stop services, the CPU is maxed out for about five seconds each time. The services start the same speed, but it still does this. Small things like lm_sensors don't do this, just things like httpd and sendmail. THis server was upgraded to Fedora 11 with a netinstall CD a few months ago.
