A few days ago I upgraded my server at home from 9.10 to 10.04 LTS (server amd64). I did a fresh install. isdnlog worked perfectly under 9.10.A few informations:

I have a Fritz!Card PCI which I used to display and log calls to my phone on Windows XP with. Now that I use Ubuntu Maverick x64, I tried to do the same with isdnlog. Logging the calls to /var/lib/isdn/calls works fine, but the START command doesn't work.
I have experimented with different parameters (user, group, interval, time, flags) in the start section, nothing worked.
I have read this tutorial to get started. The installed version of isdnlog is 1:3.12.20071127-0ubuntu6.

I have three WD 1.5 GB harddrives. 2 of them already in a linear RAID also called Concatenated i think. (the same as JBOD). Can i add the third drive to the RAID without losing data? Update "Using mdadm software raid."

I have configured DNS on ubuntu server 8.10 and it is working fine. There is one question I have though. Everytime I ping a LAN device by name I get the reply from the server with only the IP Address.

Now, my /var/log/messages is getting all the firewall logs + all other logs.
I'm wondering if there is a way to redirect the logs from my Cisco Firewall (coming from UDP port 514) to another file.
I've decided to toy around with LVM and mdadm this weekend. I can get everything working, and all is well, until I restart. After that, I no longer have any /dev/md0 device, which during the auto mount process, causes an error. I've looked through several HOWTOs, as well as the LVM/mdadm man pages, and I believe I've tracked it down to mdadm's "assemble" that is needed (so that LVM can see the md0 device).
Not exactly sure how to go about having this occur during the boot process to ensure that the LVM mapped drive is available for when fstab is read. In case it helps this is a base install of 10.10 server 64. I have four drives, the first is used for the OS and is not in the RAID array (nor LVM). The second and third are RAID1 (/dev/md0) and there is a volume group associated with /dev/md0. The last is a LVM, but not RAID, and it has its own volume group.
I am finally, and happily ditching Windows IIS, SQL Server, and ASP in favor of LAMP. Not only will I save a bunch of money on operating systems but I've found php and MySQL development to be much faster than their Microsoft counterparts.Currently I have two W2008 and two Ubuntu servers running and doing virtually parallel tasks. I want to can the W2008 machines but I am not 100% sure of my Ubuntu mirrors.Everything seems to be working fine. I've copied tons of data back and forth as a primitive test but sometimes things work fine for all the wrong reasons. Here's where I get confused.
Question 1:Do I need to partition the RAID device (MD0) and then format it?From my experience this is necessary to get the device to mount.
Question 2:In this case was it also necessary to format the individual drive partitions?
Question 3:If I do a daily cat /proc/mdstat is this all I need to do to check the drive status.
Question 4:Is there any other check I can do to assure that the mirrors are created, mounted, and operating correctly?
Is there a recommended NAS device (preferably only an enclosure which I can change the SATA HDs) in the market that the OS used in the NAS device can be changed by installing either Lubuntu or Mint LXDE?These are the things I am looking for with the NAS device

I have something similar going on with my relatively old (it's core 2 duo I think) monitor-busted laptop for around a year now. But the discspace of that is only 160GB and it's somewhat a pain to always migrate the files. I'm also thinking it would be good storage of lots of big pictures as my brother is a hobbyist turned professional photographer and I am an apprentice of his. It will also be stored with lots of videos and sound files that can be accessed at least through the network.
I'm thinking of at least having it 2TB but there currently are two problems with the current laptop namely: the USB plug of the laptop has serious problems that it disconnects the USB2 randomly then makes it USB1 speed. Secondly, it has bad heat management that it shut downs randomly without a word (or so I think it's because of that it shuts down).
As much as I would like to build from the junk of old computers we don't use, I don't think I have the time recently to make my own NAS and experiment (and even though I'm excited in learning and setting up RAID - I don't think I have that luxury of a time at the moment).
I've been reading last night of devices like Buffalo Link Station and such but most if not all of them have their own preinstalled OS and Google searches doesn't stumble me to an. What I want actually is install Mint LXDE or Lubuntu as I prefer that it has the features and programs I'm currently using right now with the 160GB network storage.
Is there a NAS device in the market I can install Lubuntu or Mint LXDE (yeah, I think LXDE will be the best environment for the things I will do for it)? Or is it still better that I make some time and build my own NAS? Please advice *bows deeply*

1 holds the Ubuntu OS
The other is the file server drive with 1 additional for backup using raid1.
2 Questions:
1) How do I get to the drive or Raid device to put files on the drive using command line (the 2 drives are sda & sdc that are connected to the raid1 device)?
2) How do I set the path in Samba to connect to this RAID drive.
On Ubuntu Server 10.10 the second bond device won't come up. Someone please advise the correct configuration. Error message when I run /etc/init.d/networking restart:

I am trying to create a new mdadm RAID 5 device /dev/md0 across three disks where such an array previously existed, but whenever I do it never recovers properly and tells me that I have a faulty spare in my array. More-specific details below. I recently installed Ubuntu Server 10.10 on a new box with the intent of using it as a NAS sorta-thing. I have 3 HDDs (2 TB each) and was hoping to use most of the available disk space as a RAID5 mdadm device (which gives me a bit less than 4TB.)
I configured /dev/md0 during OS installation across three partitions on the three disks - /dev/sda5, /dev/sdb5 and /dev/sdc5, which are all identical sizes. The OS, swap partition etc. are all on /dev/sda. Everything worked fine, and I was able to format the device as ext4 and mount it. Good so far.
Then I thought I should simulate a failure before I started keeping important stuff on the RAID array - no point having RAID 5 if it doesn't provide some redundancy that I actually know how to use, right? So I unplugged one of my drives, booted up, and was able to mount the device in a degraded state; test data I had put on there was still fine. Great. My trouble began when I plugged the third drive back in and re-booted. I re-added the removed drive to /dev/md0 and recovery began; things would look something like this:

I try to configure openvpn under Fedora, using TUN/TAP device. I configured it under windows without the problems. However in windows this device is TAP-WIN32 device with the name VPN-urs. It set set in client.ovpn file as:

Something weird happened last night and my raid5 failed. I am trying to re activate it and see if my data is dead or what. When I run mdadm -Asv /dev/md0 I get

When I was upgrading my system (ubuntu server edition) today from 8.10 to 10.04 (of course in small steps: upgrade version after version) everything seemed running smoothly. But when I restarted it, it gave an error message: Gave up waiting on root device. Screenshot of error and grub menu attached. I've read some information about it and applied the possible workaround given here: [URL]. My system is very old and so is the HDD: it uses an IDE connector. Typing 'exit' doesn't work either.

For example, I wish for irssi to route through eth0 and w3m to route through eth1. Keep in mind these devices have dynamic IPs, so I cannot attached them to an IP.
The solution cannot be accomplished through route since route pivots on IPs not devices.
I have an Ubuntu server x64 (10.04) that is running FOG for imaging Its installed on an Intel server board (1 RU rackmount) I configured the RAID in an Intekl based BIOS utility which Looks similar to This Ubuntu installed and runs perfectly. however im unable to monitor the status of the drives from the OS, so Im unaware of any drive failures that may occur I manged to install megacli but it returns blank data (along with exit code: 0x00) Iv also tryed megactl wich says

I'm putting a server together and have run into a boot up problem. (I thought about putting this in the server forum, but it might be a more generic problem that others have seen and know how to rectify.) The install seems to have gone just fine. I have the /boot partition on an internal IDE drive. The rest of that drive and another are mirrored in a Raid0 configuration (using the Linux software to do that) for data storage. The swap partition is a part of the Raid5 SCSI array that also has the / (root) partition on it.
After installation it would not finish the booting process. I suspected that GRUB didn't like all the Raid arrays and such, but it seems to be fine. I can say that because the machine will boot into rescue mode with the GUI splash screen and I have access to the whole directory tree. I have already searched on-line and following prudent advice, ran the yum update while in the chroot /mnt/sysimage mode. That only took overnight to download and most of this morning to complete. Still no dice. Used vim to delete the rhgb quiet commands in the grub.conf file so I could see where the kernel seems to be hanging.
So right after the "Creating initial device nodes" is a line about my generic PS2 wheel mouse. So I tried a USB mouse. Got more output so tried swapping out to a USB keyboard. Got a little further with more information about input devices, but still stops. Also, I tried a PCI video card just to make sure the onboard video wasn't the problem - no change. So, if someone in the Fedora community knows what loads up or is configured right after the mouse and keyboard, I might be able to figure out what's causing the computer to hang during the boot process.
I just noticed, on both of my CentOS 5.3 servers, within grub, root shows (fd0)device.map = (hd0) /dev/sda and nothing else.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThe system is an old AMD Duron 650MHz that was dug out of the garbage, trying to set it up as a light duty server. I installed ubuntu 10.04 with no errors or troubles during the install, however whenever the system is booted it sits at a cursor for about a minute then goes into busybox giving the error "Gave up waiting on root device." and says that the hard drive does not excist. If I sit at busybox for about another minute and type exit it then boots ubuntu 10.04 with no errors or issues.
View 7 Replies View RelatedRecently setup Ubuntu Server 10.10 on an old Dell Poweredge 2650. It seemed to be working perfectly until I did my first reboot. I tried changing the 'root' reference on the linux line at the grub menu with no luck. I suspect the problem is something else but I have no clue.
So far the behavior seems completely consistent. If I physically power the machine down and start it back up everything works perfectly. However, if I do a sudo reboot now I'll end up at the initramfs prompt. I'm not comfortable setting up my dev environment on this box until I'm sure it will be stable. In case it matters the machine is running a single scsi drive and doesn't have a raid controller.
As per [URL] I built a RAID6 array. yay. In the end it completed.

I'm currently setting up a dell server with hardware raid 1 on sas 6r. i got 4 sas installed on the server and configured to raid 1 as stated below,
array 1:
slot 0 & 1
array 2:
slot 2 & 3
during the installation, the installer detect the array 2 as sda and array 1 as sdb.. so i proceed with installation on array 2. after completed the installation, the first reboot lead me to a 'grub-rescue" prompt. by following the guide at url Mode, i've noticed that the boot folder has changed to (hd1,1), which i believe it has changed to sdb1. default root device shows that prefix=(hd0,1)/grub.
I am getting the same errors everytime I boot the server up:
Error: no such device {SOME-UUID}
Error: no suck disk
After that the system boots normally, but Im afraid ignoring this error can make my system crash in the future. I figured it was a grub error and I tried the update-grub2 command, it does detect all installed kernels no problem, but after I reboot I get the same error message.
All my music editing software programs say, "unable to open device /dev/dsp.Device or resource busy." How can I fix this?

I fear that the array is ruined, but I can't imagine how. Here are various bits of information: The simplest failure (with and without partition numbers, which have not been needed in the past):

This is the information lsusb gives:

Setup1: Two rack mounted servers with a common storage device serving as the home directories for users on the servers. The storage device is a gfs partition mounted on the servers as the home directory using SAS cables. These servers have RHEL 5.4 as the installed operating system.
Setup2: A standard tower server with Debian 6 as the operating system used for tape backups. This has a tape drive connected to it.
Question: How to mount the storage device of setup1 using NFS on the server in setup2.
Recently, I created a device sc0 through device mapper. The divice could be found in /dev/mapper/sc0. My problem is that the device doesn't exist in /dev/partitions which will block my following test.BTW, I found dm-0 in /dev/partitions. Is it the same as /dev/mapper/sc0? But the device /dev/dm-0 doesn't exist!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am working on an embedded system, which is an USB MSC device that supports some vendor specific scsi commands. I am using FC10 laptop as USB host for testing, and it runs some small apps based on sg3. All has been well for ~ a week. The FC10 laptop is able to communicate with the device and retrieve data. Suddenly, starting from today, the laptop is not able to properly detect the device. When plugged-in, the MSC device is detected as input device (I thought). This is observed from "dmesg" output and changes in "/dev/input/".The device under development is running at full speed. When I connect to winXP, no problem. A windows file explorer pops up, showing the content of the drive.Also, the FC10 has no problem with other USB flash drive (high speed).
