Ubuntu Servers :: App To "manage" Your Craigslist Account?
Jan 7, 2011
Is anybody aware of an app to "manage" your craigslist account? By manage I mean delete and repost ads every 3 days, auto fill captcha or pop it up for you to fill, etc. The craigslist website is awkward, slow, pathetic, and just a plain annoying waste of time but I've never as successfully gotten rid of the junk around my house with other websites...

Is there a possibility in openldap to allow a user to only create/manage specific LDAP users?For example user "mailadmin" may only create/manage mail accounts in LDAP that are named like "m1342895"? Or a specific list of user accounts that are in a specific group?

I'm looking for an effective way to manage use of internet bandwidth by users on a local area network. Currently there is a simple broadband router and unmanaged switch, and a standalone Ubuntu Server (8.04) that provides DHCP, DNS and mail for the LAN, and a web server. Ports are forwarded from a static external IP address to HTTP, HTTPS, SMTP, SSH and IMAPS, and some security is provided by IP Tables (managed by using UFW).
There are 5 users on the network, and currently one or two of those 5 are using beyond our monthly download allowance of 30Gb. 1) To be aware of how many users are currently using the internet connection, and to divide the bandwidth between that number (so that if there are, say, 3 active connections, the total bandwidth available is divided 3 ways, rather than one of those users being able to hog all of it).
2) To allow each user to download up to 1/5 of 30Gb each month without any additional throttling (apart from the above), but once they go over that allowance to throttle them individually to, say, 10Kbps until the start of the new month.
I've heard other threads talking about both IP Tables and a proxy server such as Squid. I have no idea which of these would be most suited to the task. Currently, as I said, the Ubuntu server is standalone and only using 1 NIC, but it has 2 NICs and I could be configured to act as a gateway for the LAN, instead of the router, which is set to be the current default gateway.

I have a LAMP server running Ubuntu 8.04.03 Server edition running smoothly. Ive setup several websites on the server and all are ok, but I constantly have trouble with permissions. Everytime I setup a new domain to host, I setup a user specific to that domain. This allows SSH login specific to the domain. The problem I have is that every time I setup ownership in the virtual directories for the users they belong to, the settings don't seem to stay. Initially it seems to work ok, but when I install Joomla and setup the webspace, I always seem to have to login to the server itself to chmod the folders I need to have writable. I cant chmod properly from my FTP client which is weird. How to manage permissions?
Currently I am doing the following:
Code:
sudo mkdir -p {name of domain}/{public,private, etc...}
sudo usermod -g www-data {my user name}
sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/{directory for the domain}
sudo chmod -R 775 {folder path I need to change}
This works for a while but as I add new things to Joomla and I want to modify the folders, I always have to go back and redo the chmod and the chown commands to get them where I want.

I have a server on my home network. It's currently running a DNS server (bind9) and an HTTP caching server (squid).What I would like to do is redirect all outgoing port 80 connections to the squid server and also make the server responsible for managing DHCP on the network.
Do I just need to install a DHCP daemon on the server, disable it on the router, then set my server as the default gateway and configure iptables to route all connections like I want? Or is it more complicated than that? Also, would that mean that all communication between two computers on the network will go through the server?

We are looking for a web based, server application to manage staff skills running on ubuntu (10.04 lts). Something like we attach tags with skills to people photographs, and then when people connect to the application by means of a browser, they see a list of tags, they click on a tag they get a list of people who have that skill. Ideally, the tags should be hierarchical (for example, skill: statistics, subskill: non-linear).

I have a server with multiple domains and a DNS service (bind9) my main domain is registered with GoDaddy and it's A-record points to my server, it then has CNAME records with ns1 and ns2. I use ns1 and ns2 to point my other domains to the DNS server I host, which then manages what happens.
Anyway, what I would like to do is enable the DNS server to manage the subdomains on my main host. For example, if the domain was example.com and I use admin.example.com in the DNS server, it will not follow through unless I set the cname up, whereas my others will. How do I do a similar thing for my main domain.

So i have a fresh install of the server edition of Karmic, i'm running the Xfce desktop. When I attempt to manage users and groups through the GUI, I am prompted for what I think is the root password, the reason I say this is because the account I am currently logged in has sudo privileges and it does not accept that password at all, but I read that by default the root account is 'locked,' (to be honest it was so long ago since I last installed Ubuntu I completely forgot if it is or isn't, my current desktop installation has su access) is it asking for the root password? why doesn't my current user account password work if the root account is 'locked'? I can perform all other administrative tasks with sudo no problem.
the funny thing is, I have the exact same setup in a virtual machine, the same problem happens, except for some strange reason after changing the password on the only account (besides root), the password required to administer users and groups stayed the same after the change. (at the time of installation I just put both the user and root password the same and now that it is setup), i'm now ready to change the passwords. except now I read that the root account is locked by default, but this strange problem occurs.

I've got an old p3 with 11 ide hard drives strapped to it for storage and I decided to throw Ubuntu server on it because it's more lightweight than a standard ubuntu install, and given it's a pentium 3 with 128mb of ram, lightweight is good. I installed, through putty (ssh), the gnome gui - then learned that putty only does cli (i was thrilled), so I've spend the last hour trying to figure out how to enable remote desktop.
I don't mind reinstalling to do what is necessary. remote desktop to manage file downloads from my windows 7 machine(s) big list, i know. history: this thing is/was my media server. I had xp on it, sharing all drives and watching hd movies off it, but then xp decided it did't want to boot anymore so here we are. I'm thinking of just putting ubuntu 8.04/8.10 on it and through its wonderful gui enabling remote desktop and using realvnc/tightvnc to access it

I try to use FTP to put new files and catalogs on my server and I always run into problems that I have not the right to create catalogs and files in the named catalogs and so on, it is very annoying.Is there a way around this problem or do I have to activate root account to not run into these problems all the time? I have worked with different UNIX-versions and variants for the last 15 years at least and have always had access to root account, why is it so dangerous to have access to root account in ubuntu?

i followed this guide, [URL] a few days ago and set up an sftp server no problem. The user can only see what is in there home folder which is only the examples file which is empty. Today i went to set up a 2nd ftp account for my own private use. I have it set up and all, followed exactly what he said the 2nd time around and my 2nd user is not chroot'd. I can explor the contents of the whole drive.
My fist user that works fine is "ftpuser" and the group is "sftponly" just like in the guide. My 2nd user is named "ftptaylor". Now i did have an ftp server set up with vsftpd where i had the same ftpuser account in a different group, but it was jailed to /home/ftpuser. I cant tell you how i did it, i followed a number of guides untill one worked. But could it be that the guide above does not in face jail the users, but just that my user was already jail'd?

I don't have much experience in Linux administration, but I needed to create a simple www server. It's is installed on a dedicated machine running Ubuntu Server 10.04.1 x64. I've got a problem with creating and setting ftp account to access /var/www. I've read that I shall not change the owner nor the access permissions to that folder. I've also tried changing /var/www permissions but even when I had access I could not modify/overwrite nor delete files which I've uploaded (I could upload and download/view). Currently it seems to work, but I've chown'ed /var/etc to my wwwuser user account (as I remember originally it was owned by root). It works but wwwuser must have a shell assigned (/bin/sh or /bin/bash), without it (/bin/false) he cannot log on to the ftp account. So here goes my question - who should own /var/www, what permission should this folder have and how to make it work using vsftpd? What is local_umask=022 in vsftpd.conf?

I've got an old computer around that I've put Ubuntu server 8.04 on.At the moment, this is only a little hobby of mine purely for educational purposes. (Great for learning Linux!) After using this tutorial:URL...for setting up a LAMP-server, I'm trying to figure out is whether or not setting up a root-password is necessary or not. I think the tutorial is really great for a newbie, but it consistently uses su instead of sudo.I'm aware of the fact that setting a root-password isn't recommended in the documentation, but don't you need a root-account to be able to run tools such as webmin?

This may sound a bit odd, but after installing Ubuntu Server 9.10 64-bit version, I can't seem to log in with the root account that I created. My user account works fine. I thought that I may have fat fingered the password when I created it so I ran the installer again since it takes very little time to do so. When creating the new root account password, I was very careful to type it correctly. After the install was complete, I am still unable to use the root account. I'm unable to SU from my normal user account, too. I just receive the Login incorrect error. Is there something with using root accounts with Ubuntu server that I'm missing?

I've successfully set-up Drupal on my machine on a local network and have no problem accessing it with the virtual host names defined in /etc/hosts, but I don't have bind or any other DNS set-up.I've installed Postfix and can sent email with the mail command to unix account, and I can also read them with the mail command( from the command line).Now, my problem is with not being able to use the local Unix email accounts in drupal. Particularly, I would like to have one of the unix account receive email for the development site.I might like to also have various user on the drupal installation, and then test sending notifications to them.here is my /etc/postfix/main.cf# See /usr/share/postfix/main.cf.dist for a commented, more complete version

I'm setting up a server on a Cloud Server hosting service. When they installed Ubuntu 10.04, they set it up with "root" access. Meaning they created an account called "root" and gave us a password to log in.Of course, I immediately created the admin (sudo) accounts for myself and the other administrator. However, being that we are most familiar with installing 8.04 LTS server on our own hardware, and thus set it up without root, we don't quite know how to get rid of the 'root' login, yet preserve the ability for our scripts and software to still run with root permissions.

I setup openldap and samba on 9.10. The ubuntu desktop client gets authenticated successfully with the server. But when I do a passwd on the client, only the ldap passwd is getting changed but not in the samba and the unix user account.
My smb.conf
Code:
passdb backend = ldapsam:ldap://192.168.3.100
ldap suffix = dc=example,dc=local
ldap user suffix = ou=People
ldap group suffix = ou=Groups
[code].....
But only the ldap password is getting changed and not in the samba and unix user account.
I tried
unix password sync = yes
but same result.

I want to automaticly set the group ownership of user home directories to a group that the user is not part of. This is so that Apache can be part of this group and can access user public HTML directory, but other users are not able to access in any way the files in the users home directory. What I have seen that works manually is adding the user and then changing the group for the home directory. But I want to automatically set this when the user account is created. WHat I see happening is that when /etc/skel is copied, it automatically sets the group and ownership of everything to the users default group and ownership. I've seen some suggestions on setting permissions, but these don't seem to work because it seems that users are able to cd into a directory and not list it, but if they know the file name they can access the file.

After installing kmail I found that the account data of my Yahoo account were still listed in the kmail configuration panel. Shall I delete the Yahoo account within kmail prior to uninstalling the kmail package?

I will try to explain. My bank send to me a file which has extension .fm6, but which is, in reality, a zipped file. I have a program, which runs more or less well under wine, to open them.
Now the problem is: how can I associate this kind of files to the application? I mean, I can change the application for *all* compressed zip files, I know how to do it, but I do not want it. Just zip files that happens to have a name ending in .fm6 should be associated with them.
I know it's possible. In the end, openoffice.org files are really zip files (try it), and they are treated differently.
