Ubuntu Servers :: FTP Account For WWW Content Updates?
Sep 17, 2010
I don't have much experience in Linux administration, but I needed to create a simple www server. It's is installed on a dedicated machine running Ubuntu Server 10.04.1 x64. I've got a problem with creating and setting ftp account to access /var/www. I've read that I shall not change the owner nor the access permissions to that folder. I've also tried changing /var/www permissions but even when I had access I could not modify/overwrite nor delete files which I've uploaded (I could upload and download/view). Currently it seems to work, but I've chown'ed /var/etc to my wwwuser user account (as I remember originally it was owned by root). It works but wwwuser must have a shell assigned (/bin/sh or /bin/bash), without it (/bin/false) he cannot log on to the ftp account. So here goes my question - who should own /var/www, what permission should this folder have and how to make it work using vsftpd? What is local_umask=022 in vsftpd.conf?

I've installed DarwinStreamingServer 5.5.5 with User qtss:qtss (setted up manually). Everything fine.I changed the permission of the config-file
Code:
sudo chmod 755 /etc/streaming/streamingserver.xml
And Configured the webinterfaces. So far so good.
Streaming like: rtsp://<Server-IP>/sample_100kbit.mp4 worx.
But i can not set up Playlist and the List where you should find your files is empty, although there are files in my default directory.I Expect that any file permissions are wrong, but which.

I am using find to search for .tgz files modified more than 7 days ago and delete them.find /directory/ -iname backup*.tgz -daystart -mtime +7 -exec rm -rf {} My problem is that find will go through the content of tarball as well and list all content. I want to only search main tarball and delete it if older than 7 days.

I try to use FTP to put new files and catalogs on my server and I always run into problems that I have not the right to create catalogs and files in the named catalogs and so on, it is very annoying. Is there a way around this problem or do I have to activate root account to not run into these problems all the time? I have worked with different UNIX-versions and variants for the last 15 years at least and have always had access to root account, why is it so dangerous to have access to root account in ubuntu?

i followed this guide, [URL] a few days ago and set up an sftp server no problem. The user can only see what is in there home folder which is only the examples file which is empty. Today i went to set up a 2nd ftp account for my own private use. I have it set up and all, followed exactly what he said the 2nd time around and my 2nd user is not chroot'd. I can explor the contents of the whole drive.
My fist user that works fine is "ftpuser" and the group is "sftponly" just like in the guide. My 2nd user is named "ftptaylor". Now i did have an ftp server set up with vsftpd where i had the same ftpuser account in a different group, but it was jailed to /home/ftpuser. I cant tell you how i did it, i followed a number of guides untill one worked. But could it be that the guide above does not in face jail the users, but just that my user was already jail'd?

I've got an old computer around that I've put Ubuntu server 8.04 on.At the moment, this is only a little hobby of mine purely for educational purposes. (Great for learning Linux!) After using this tutorial:URL...for setting up a LAMP-server, I'm trying to figure out is whether or not setting up a root-password is necessary or not. I think the tutorial is really great for a newbie, but it consistently uses su instead of sudo.I'm aware of the fact that setting a root-password isn't recommended in the documentation, but don't you need a root-account to be able to run tools such as webmin?

This may sound a bit odd, but after installing Ubuntu Server 9.10 64-bit version, I can't seem to log in with the root account that I created. My user account works fine. I thought that I may have fat fingered the password when I created it so I ran the installer again since it takes very little time to do so. When creating the new root account password, I was very careful to type it correctly. After the install was complete, I am still unable to use the root account. I'm unable to SU from my normal user account, too. I just receive the Login incorrect error. Is there something with using root accounts with Ubuntu server that I'm missing?

I've successfully set-up Drupal on my machine on a local network and have no problem accessing it with the virtual host names defined in /etc/hosts, but I don't have bind or any other DNS set-up.I've installed Postfix and can sent email with the mail command to unix account, and I can also read them with the mail command( from the command line). Now, my problem is with not being able to use the local Unix email accounts in drupal. Particularly, I would like to have one of the unix account receive email for the development site.I might like to also have various user on the drupal installation, and then test sending notifications to them.here is my /etc/postfix/main.cf# See /usr/share/postfix/main.cf.dist for a commented, more complete version

I'm setting up a server on a Cloud Server hosting service. When they installed Ubuntu 10.04, they set it up with "root" access. Meaning they created an account called "root" and gave us a password to log in.Of course, I immediately created the admin (sudo) accounts for myself and the other administrator. However, being that we are most familiar with installing 8.04 LTS server on our own hardware, and thus set it up without root, we don't quite know how to get rid of the 'root' login, yet preserve the ability for our scripts and software to still run with root permissions.

I've been using Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick) for some time now as the OS for a home Nasbox, along with webmin. Its been great, and I've been able to SSH into the box without any issues in the past.Last night, I ran apt-get update and apt-get upgrade to bring my system more current.
Now, I can't seem to log into SSH any longer, and get a "Connection failed, Windows error 10061" error.I'm going to upgrade the OS to 11 as well in hopes things fix themselves.

Heres my situation. I have around 30+ systems running Karmic and more coming online everyday. I'd like to be able to have these updated via the local network to conserve net bandwidth. Is it possible to setup a single system which will download updates I specify, then make them available to the other systems on my network via some kind of local repo?
Of course I'm not looking to download EVERY repo, just the essential updates to the core OS. I really just want to eliminate that 45 min/256 file download that takes place each time I install a new system.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Last night I was doing some admin on this box, it's running apache and ASSP for spam filtering. Once I finished I started some updates.I checked for updates and applied them, but fell asleep. This morning, my session had timed out at continue. I reconnected and saw a message stating a reboot was required.I've rebooted, my usual services are running, eg apache and ASSP. I can view pages on apache and the admin page for ASSP. I'm remote from the system, so connecting over the internet and when I try to connect, it fails.
Quite urgent, however at least my services are working. However I'm not happy that I can't access the system myself.I don't know if this is my own fault for leaving updates unattended or if an update caused the problem. Thanks.

When I log into my Ubuntu server via SSH it usually gives me the number of available updates. But a while ago it started saying this multiple times, and with different numbers. I've tried to install the updates. But one of the messages about updates always says there's updates available. Also the number seem to be static and never change.
Example:
Code:
login as: user
user@domain's password:
Linux Inceptor 2.6.32-31-generic #61-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 8 18:25:51 UTC 2011 x86_ 64 GNU/Linux
Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS
[Code]...

I setup openldap and samba on 9.10. The ubuntu desktop client gets authenticated successfully with the server. But when I do a passwd on the client, only the ldap passwd is getting changed but not in the samba and the unix user account.
My smb.conf
Code:
passdb backend = ldapsam:ldap://192.168.3.100
ldap suffix = dc=example,dc=local
ldap user suffix = ou=People
ldap group suffix = ou=Groups
[code].....
But only the ldap password is getting changed and not in the samba and unix user account.
I tried
unix password sync = yes
but same result.

I want to automaticly set the group ownership of user home directories to a group that the user is not part of. This is so that Apache can be part of this group and can access user public HTML directory, but other users are not able to access in any way the files in the users home directory. What I have seen that works manually is adding the user and then changing the group for the home directory. But I want to automatically set this when the user account is created. WHat I see happening is that when /etc/skel is copied, it automatically sets the group and ownership of everything to the users default group and ownership. I've seen some suggestions on setting permissions, but these don't seem to work because it seems that users are able to cd into a directory and not list it, but if they know the file name they can access the file.

I am using samba4 and bind9 (9.7.2rc1) on an ubuntu server 10.04.
Everything works fine, but bind9 ist unable to update DNS entries sent by clients.
I followed the tutorial [URL] but it doesn't work for me.
It doesn't look like a file permission problem:
Code:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root /usr/local/samba/private/dns.keytab
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root /usr/local/samba/private/dns_update_list
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root /usr/local/samba/private/named.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root /usr/local/samba/private/named.conf.update
[Code].....

On a new machine running Ubuntu 10.04.2, the freshclam program (in clamav-freshclam version 0.96.5+dfsg-1ubuntu1.10.04.2) won't do updates to the database. It fails on DNS queries. DNS works OK for other programs. The tcpdump command shows that it sends the queries to 127.0.0.1 instead of the correct DNS servers specified by /etc/resolv.conf. Of course it doesn't get an answer because it is asking the wrong IP address.
There is also a --no-dns option, but that didn't help/
Do I need to tell ot what the DNS servers are, somewhere?
Why would it query only 127.0.0.1 for DNS?

Starting with Ubuntu Server 9.04, when I log in at times the OS smartly reports the number of updates available. I have a couple of questions of how to extend this functionality:
1) How could I back-port that functionality to 8.04 servers? Does that happen somewhere in the /etc/cron.daily/apt script? (Just the checking on # of packages needing updates, does not need to appear on the login screen.)
2) Then with that information, if the number >0 then use mailx to send admins an email. Since 9.04 and higher already do the first item, then in my mind #2 is the only thing needed for 9.04 and higher servers, and #1 is also needed for 8.04 boxes.

New to Ubuntu not to Unix. I am having issues with aptitude updates. Gives error unable to locate. When I look for the file manually I cannot find it either. It is looking for http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Translation-en_US. Is there a site that list all mirrors that carry the updates? I would like to find manually and adjust source.list file.

I've noticed this happening on some servers that I manage. I'll be downloading updates around 300 kb/s - 500 kb/s and then out of nowhere it will drop to about 3 kb/s. It will stay here forever, if I let it. I then have to cancel (Ctrl-C) the updates and restart them. This happens over and over and over until I finally get the full download. Why does this happen?
