Fedora Servers :: Samba Doesnt Work In 12 - Not Allowed To Access
Mar 29, 2010I am fairly new to Fedora or rather use it only for some school exercises I get. I have to setup a Samba server with some basic settings and it doesn't want to work. I first tried it on the Fedora VM I got from school (version 11). It somehow worked, but extremely bad ... the Windows client had to wait for over a minute to get either access or an errormessage, that the server was not found (but when entered the ip in the adressfield on top it worked (with a minute or more to wait)). I tried updating the VM - no improvement. So I decided to download Fedora 12, installed it and the Windows client gains instant access on first glance. But when I try to get access to a specific share, it only tells me, that I am not allowed to access it Oo.

I even turned off iptables and Windows firewall.
The funny thing is: I tried exactly the same config on my homeserver (copy and paste), which runs Arch, and it works with no problem. But on Fedora I cant access it from nowhere. Not from WinXP, Win7 or any Linux. Simply won't work.
I dont have any gui on Fedora

Result : I can't modify my WLAN-Connection.

Aug 4, 2010Proftpd is installed and running fine on 8.04 server. I want to streamline the process of adding users. Adding a ftp user with USERADD fails (user is created but connection fails when trying to connect with ftp client).

But, ADDUSER works:

It's a bother because I want to automate the process, and ADDUSER has all those prompts and asks for the password twice.

May 16, 2010i've come to replacement my 80 yr old fathers win98 machine with lucidFirefox 3.6.3 says 'connecting to .....' when accessing a webpage (eg his home igoogle page,bbc.co.uk ) and then times out .It all works with opera and links2 and pings are the usual times and its doing DNS . I've added 4.4.4.4 and 8.8.8.8 to /etc/resolv.conf for good measure FF its configured NOT to use a proxy ( Im fed up looking and checking !) and ive tried the 'detect settings automatically'this is a 'mission critical' step. Going to linux is a big enough change , so getting FF working will be a deal-breaker

I can change to just about any dir of my file system with cd /filename/
eg cd /var/ or cd /opt/
it will skip me up or down the tree to get there but when if go cd /Desktop/or cd /myuseraccount/
is get: bash: cd: /Desktop/: No such file or directory
i have to be right next to the directory to get there.i dont get it. why is this?

Aug 22, 2010I have a computer that i wish to install ubuntu 10.04 on, it wont install tho, it tells me that it cant detect the cd rom (the drive it is booting from) and that i should insert a removable device with the drivers on it, except i dont have those and don't know where to get them. i cant boot from a usb but i have a usb with 10.04 on it just incase. i tryed this with both alternate install and desktop. i dont know what to do, i have invested 2 days to try and do this and i would really like to put this on my computer.
I have previously installed 8.04 on my computer with out such error and all of the hardware is the same (even the hard drive), and i lost the 8.04 disk. <(it was a live disk)
Ubuntu :: Auto-login Doesnt Work ?
Apr 28, 2011I am running xubuntu 11.04 (ISO from early this week). During install, I selected to NOT auto login but to present this gdm panel where I have to enter the password (or other users could log in).
Now I decided to enable auto-login (and to start the screensaver right afterwards) ... so I opened up the "login screen settings" (systems menu), unlocked that window and changed it to "login as xxx".
Then i rebooted and would have expected to be greeted with my screen saver on a logged-in session afterwards. But what happens is that there is a gdm panel sitting ... showing me

Where the first item wont do anything.
So I have to select other and enter user name + password ?
Is that how it is supposed to work?

I have to unplug the cable, refresh the page and let it wait for the connection, after a second or two, i plug it back in, and it works. this works only for that page, which means only that page loads.. if i try to open another site or smthing else, it doesnt work and i have to repeat the exercise for the new site..i have to unplug, refresh and let it wait for connection and plug it back in.. The same thing happens if i try to download an application.. i have to first issue the command to download, and when it says "connecting to blah blah.." i plug the cable back in and it starts downloading, it doesnt work if the cable is already plugged it..!

I understood that raw1394 and video1394 modules are now deprecated. So firewire_ohci and firewire_core are loaded when I plug in the camera. There is no more /dev/raw1394 and /dev/video-0 streams, but now there are /dev/fw0 and /dev/fw1.
