The dhcp doesnt work unless i put a switch or router between the ubuntu gateway and the connecting computer.

Im on ubuntu 10.04. is this normal? or should i be able to connect without having a router or switch between the ubuntu server and the internal network....
Does anyone know if you switch networks Where you have your servers hosted on a Non-DHCP Network, and you switch your IP addresses, then do you have to switch change/assign your new gateway address? I'm not sure if its manually assigned? How do you do it? Also what about nameserver resolving?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo what I want to do is setup a gateway(or router, idk what Ubuntu refers to it as.). So my set up would be Modem>Server>Switch>Router. I know that I need to set up it up as a DHCP server as well. I would also like to setup it up as a firewall too. I already have two Gbit cards that are already configured. So how do I do this? I already tried one tutorial, but it was old and was for Debian. I also installed ebox, but I couldnt figure that out either.

I built out the new network and everything worked great except our AD server would never get an IP address from the DHCP server (static reservation) and even if I set the IP statically on the AD server it couldn't ping the gateway and noone could log in. After several attempts to resolve this, including bringing in outside help, we where never able to figure out what the problem was.
Now 6 months later I have time to revisit the issue without effecting the live network. I used Acronis and imaged the AD server last Friday, cloned it on to another box with the same hardware, and put it up on the new network that's been sitting unused for the last 6 months. Today when I statically set the IP on the AD server (which is what I want) it connects and I can ping it's gateway 192.168.1.1 and all the way across vlans to a test sales agent workstation at 192.168.8.xxx on vlan 800 but only if I statically assign the agents station an IP address. When I try to get an IP address via DHCP it fails as destination unreachable. Nothing has changed in the last 6 months on the DHCP server but now it for some reason can't ping its default gateway 192.168.1.1. All of the config files are the same as they where left from the post linked above aside from the vlan id's used where changed from 1's to 100's (i.e. vlan 3 is now vlan 300) /etc/network/interfaces

However whenever I use the link that was made it goes to my router configuration page instead of onto my server. I am fairly new to Fedora or rather use it only for some school exercises I get. I have to setup a Samba server with some basic settings and it doesn't want to work. I first tried it on the Fedora VM I got from school (version 11). It somehow worked, but extremely bad ... the Windows client had to wait for over a minute to get either access or an errormessage, that the server was not found (but when entered the ip in the adressfield on top it worked (with a minute or more to wait)). I tried updating the VM - no improvement. So I decided to download Fedora 12, installed it and the Windows client gains instant access on first glance. But when I try to get access to a specific share, it only tells me, that I am not allowed to access it Oo.

The funny thing is: I tried exactly the same config on my homeserver (copy and paste), which runs Arch, and it works with no problem. But on Fedora I cant access it from nowhere. Not from WinXP, Win7 or any Linux. Simply won't work.

My wifes networked computer connected to the network just fine when it was Win XP. Now that Ive converted it to 10.04 (completely) it can see the network, but it just wont connect to it. I had no problem converting my computer to Ubuntu and it sees the network and accesses it great. Files, folders and hard drives are all shared. On a Windows machine, there is an extra tab in the remote desktop client that allows you to specify a secure gateway to connect through - this means you don't need to establish a VPN connection beforehand, it simply just connects straight away via an SSL tunnel.
I've looked at quite a few Ubuntu RDP clients and none of them seem to have this option.
Does anyone know if it can be done? Either that or I'd like to get my hands on a copy of the 64 bit linux Cisco VPN client that works. I've found a few copies around the internet but they always fail to install.
What I need is some information to be studied and learned by me in order to be able to create with Ubuntu Server an Internet Gateway Server. From my ISP I get about 50 public routable IPs through DHCP. Into my LAN I need to forward this public routable IPs to machines but I want to be able to manage bandwidth and also to be able to enable or disable Internet access for every client machine. Maybe with subnets? Maybe with dchp really? It would be nice if it would possible through DHCP!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI set up a dhcp server in the lan and assigned static ips to two computers, computer A and B, according to their mac address. Everything was running fine. But when I turned off computer A, connected computer C to the network, and assigned computer A's static ip to computer C without changing dhcp setting. Computer C was able to access the internet. When I turned on computer A, dhcp couldn't assign an ip address to it, and computer C showed an error message of ip conflict and failed to use internet. I wonder if dhcp server is able to prevent other computer from using the same static ip that is already assigned to a computer according to its mac address.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a simple system at home where a DSL router is used as a basic dhcp server with one port forward for ssh to a server. I need to allow my daughters, ages 14,12 and 10, to access the net and also email but I want to have complete control and logging. What I'm looking to do is set up the Ubuntu file server I already have on the network to act as a gateway and also add content management and logging as step one.
I also want to add an email server so that all the email comes into the Ubuntu server and then is allowed to be accessed by outlook on their machines after spam/content scanning for valid emails as step two. My question is what, if any, additional software do I need and what options do I have. I've played with dhcp servers at work but never got much beyond ip assignment and network booting so I'm unfamiliar with what is needed for content management and such. As to the email server I've never even played with this at all so I'm completely in the dark as to what I should be looking at to start with. I'm looking for directions, RTFM is fine but right now I'm not sure even WHAT manual/manuals I should be reading.
I need to place an Ubuntu machine on a network where I have a DHCP server which does not configure the Degault Gateway parameter (we don't want ordinary users to browse the internet). I configured the router with the "dynamic DHCP" setting, ie, the static DHCP with MAC-Address was not used. Before that, I used the manual IP configuration, defining the two computers' names in the /etc/hosts file.

Now, with DHCP, the above example is no longer appropriate, because the DHCP server is supposed to tell the computer what IP number it will receive. However, I am missing something, because I haven't figured it out yet how to make one computer know the other computer's name. Is it that I haven't installed a name-finding package? Is there a simple way to accomplish this (one computer finding the other computers' names)?

I have Ubuntu 9.1 with wubi and Vista on my laptop. I was playing my laptop through the TV, then I tried to switch it back to computer control and the computer went black. I had to hold to power button to restart, and suddenly grub4dos starts up when I try to launch ubuntu. I can still launch Vista. Is there anything I can do to save my system? At the very least, I would like to be able to copy data from my ubuntu system to my vista system. How can I do that? I can't find C:/ubuntu/disks. It doesn't seem to exist.
I have 2 gateways on our network. What is the easiest way to be able to switch between using one or the other gateway? I am using Fedora 12 32 bit.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having some difficulties comprehending some networking concepts relating to multiple subnets and dhcp servers, or dhcp relay servers. I have built home networks many times before, and they have all followed a very simple formula. A single subnet, let's say 192.168.1.0 which is fairly typical for me. My network's DNS server is always also my networks DHCP server. Typically at 192.168.1.1. When a DHCP client broadcasts for an IP over the subnet, 192.168.1.1(My DNS/DHCP server) will not only tell the client what it's new IP is to be, but will also tell the client what it's Gateway server is. This is ALSO 192.168.1.1 for me typically.
In this manner, a client broadcasts for networking information and is given a usable IP, and told to use 192.168.1.1 for most other functionality. Very simple. However, I am uncertain how to expand this to other subnets. Say.. 192.168.2.0.
A: I can use a separate DHCP server for each subnet. or B: I can use a DHCP Relay agent for 192.168.2.0 to pass the DHCP requests to the primary DHCP server on the 192.168.1.0 subnet.
Option A: is fairly straight forward and have had it functioning fine, but it is really B: I want to know more about. It seems somehow much cleaner to me. I prefer to centralize as much of my network provisioning services as possible. It makes it easier to manage TYPICALLY. My question though is related to Gateways and the use of DHCP Relay Agents....
I live on a property with 3 other units and we all share a cable connection. There's a modem connected to a wireless router (I'll call it the "main" router), which until recently I connected to with an 80' or so long ethernet cable because I don't get a good signal, and all I've got is a desktop anyway. When plugged directly into the main router, I can get very fast download speeds - the fastest I've seen over bittorrent, for example, is about 2.2 Mb/s, and it's over 1 Mb/s most of the time for popular torrents or sites with good bandwidth. A friend with a laptop is staying with me for a month, so I wanted to set up a wireless router in my home, and my desktop needed to be moved to a location where running a wire is kind of awkward, so I planned on using the wireless too.
I don't have a spare proper router with an uplink port laying around, but I did have a spare DSL modem/wireless router combo (which I'll call the "secondary" router) that I used to use at a former residence, and I thought I'd try to use it here. I plugged it into my computer, configured its security settings how I wanted (64-bit WEP) and looked through for settings that seemed like they might pertain to using it in this capacity. I didn't really find any except for something that seemed to turn off its DHCP, which I did. Then I unplugged my computer and plugged in the ethernet cable that runs to the main router (which is a normal ethernet cable, not crossover). I found that this setup does "just work" for the most part - our computers see the signal and can log in and access the internet through the main router's cable connection. However:
1. I can't figure out how to access the secondary router's settings once it's been plugged into the main one, even if I unplug it from the main one. What happens is that as soon as I connect the two routers together, it's almost like the secondary ceases to exist independently until it's settings are purged via the reset button. I plug it's IP address into a browser like usual, and nothing happens (it's an Actiontec whose stock one is 192.168.0.1 and the main router is a Netgear with an IP of 192.168.1.1).
I can log into the main one like normal through a wireless connection to the secondary, though. If I look at "attached devices" in the main router's config, it lists all the client computers in the network, but there's no IP that could be for the router (I'm sure of this). Each computer connected through my secondary router gets assigned its own IP like normal, and port forwarding works without a hitch. Again, this persists until the secondary is reset - after the two routers are connected but until the secondary is reset, there doesn't to be a way into the secondary's config. The security settings are acting as they should, though (ie, you need the secondary's WEP key to log on).
2. Internet download speeds when connected to the secondary over wireless are extremely slow compared to what the connection is capable of (can't seem to top 90 Kb/s) but for some reason the max attainable internet upload speed seems to be about the same as normal (around 200 Kb/s). This is puzzling to me. Back when I was using the secondary router for it's intended purpose as a DSL gateway under XP, I downloaded at around 300 Kb/s all the time with it using the same wireless card I am now, so I know the hardware I have is capable of it. Now both of our wireless cards are getting the same mediocre speeds (seemingly bottlenecked at around 90 Kb/s), even with a full signal (ie, the computer right next to the router).
If we connect to the secondary router with a cable rather than wireless, there's no problem and downloads are really fast (note again though that the max upload speed doesn't seem affected whether wired or wireless, as determined by running internet speed tests in both configurations). Ping times over wireless are also extremely high - ie, 800ms+ even when pinging the main router at 192.168.1.1.
It almost seems like there's something inferior or bottlenecked about the wireless signal the secondary router puts out, but I don't know what that could be or how to change it. (I also don't really understand anything about the setup I created here though, other than that I plugged it in and crossed my fingers and it works for basic, non-bandwidth-intense tasks). basically I'm curious whether there's a way to have normal access to the secondary router's settings in this setup, and whether there's a way to make the bandwidth over wireless less mediocre.

Here 192.168.1.222 is the gateway for 192.168.1.0 network and 192.168.2.222 is the gateway for 192.168.2.0 network.These network configurations are working fine, but i want to block inter network communication ie from 192.168.1.0 network to 192.168.2.0 network,i want to block the communication for securing the local networks more.I know iptable rule is enough for this purpose .But i cant find the apt rule for this purpose.
