Ubuntu Servers :: Unable To Login With Root Account After New Install
Jan 11, 2010This may sound a bit odd, but after installing Ubuntu Server 9.10 64-bit version, I can't seem to log in with the root account that I created. My user account works fine. I thought that I may have fat fingered the password when I created it so I ran the installer again since it takes very little time to do so. When creating the new root account password, I was very careful to type it correctly. After the install was complete, I am still unable to use the root account. I'm unable to SU from my normal user account, too. I just receive the Login incorrect error. Is there something with using root accounts with Ubuntu server that I'm missing?

Aug 7, 2011I recently decided to convert my old NAS gox from Gentoo to Unbuntu Server. For reasons that I do not understand I cannot install 10.04 or 11.04 on it. I've downloaded both the i386 and the AMD64 ISO images to the same machine, burned the the image on the same DVDRW drive onto the same CDRW disc but when I try to install on the D945GCLF board, it consistently fails at the same step - Unable to install base system.
The ISO image all indicate a good MD5 sum and I've burned the ISO image at the slowest possible rate. I've even tried moving the image onto a USB drive and installing from it - same error. The D945GCLF has parallel and serial ports disabled; I'm using the SATA drive for the OS and installing from a USB CDROM drive

Aug 15, 2010I cannot install Kubuntu (or Unbuntu) 10.4 on my husband's computer. I have spent 5 hours on this and cannot get anywhere. I am deeply frustrated. The iso I burned to CD is good (works on 2 other computers). His computer will not boot from USB, no matter what I do to the drive order in BIOS. After loading the blue screen with the Kubuntu logo on it (and the blue-white dots), the screen changes to black and shows the following text:

He really needs to get rid of WinXP. Kubuntu is what I have on my computer (and love it!). Here is some info about his computer:

May 29, 2010I have a Ubuntu Server machine that I can't get to 10.04. Sometime in the past I updated it to 9.04, but perhaps something went wrong. When I do a do-release-upgrade, it tells me there are no upgrades available. I tried a bunch of things but no luck, so I installed gnome to try the gui update manager on the console. When I start it, it first tells me that my distribution is no longer supported and that I should update. It gives me the button that says 9.04 is available, but after I click it I'm told that there are no new versions available.

May 1, 2011I am setting up dhcp server for my public library and need to divide clients into a number of pools on the same network. The different ranges will be for different filtering requirements via squid/dansguard proxy. I have inhouse clients: staff, adult patron, and child patron, that have different filtering requirements and wireless guests that I want to shorter lease times to handle the rapid turnover rate. Trying to understand the terse manual, you assign pools via allow/deny members of classes, but classes are assigned by matching on mac address or vendor ids. Unfortunately as a poor rural library we have a hodge-podge of hardware with no matchable pattern. So I can solve the inhouse clients by using fixed-address, and remove them from the dynamic pool. Now the dhcp server would be serving only the short term wireless guests from the pool.
A common problem at libraries, you always get a few that are compelled to misbehave and break the libraries TOS. In the past the librarians would kick the offenders out of the library only to have them link in from the step or parking lot. Since I have their mac address in their initial lease I would like to prevent them from reestablishing a connection when they are banned.
My thinking is this; the library's computers are static and not part of the pool, the wireless clients would be unknown-clients, so set the pool to allow only unknown-clients, and for the "bad-boys" add their hosts in a group directive would make them "known" and therefore unable to get a IP from the dhcp server.

Apr 29, 2010I am trying to mount my usb printer in Ubuntu Server 9.10. I'm trying to do this so that the usb printer will be picked up by vmware server so the Windows XP guest I have on there will then be able to access the printer as if it were hooked up to it directly. I found a few posts online and this is what I've done so far. I found in a couple of posts that they said I should uncomment out the following lines in /etc/init.d/mountdevsubfs.sh. Well I found that the file didn't exsist. Someone posted up their copy of it so I copied that code into the mountdevsubfs.sh script. That code is the following:

May 13, 2010I have a Dell PowerEdge 2850 running Ubuntu 10.04 Server with SSH and Samba. My problem is that I am unable to execute my adduser.sh script which reads from a text file and adds users to the box and Samba. I have ran chmod a+x to make it executable and placed it in /usr/local/bin.
When I run sudo adduser.sh I get "sudo: unable to execute /usr/local/bin/adduser.sh: No such file or directory".
When I run adduser.sh I get "-bash: /usr/local/bin/adduser.sh: /bin/bash^M: bad interpreter: No such file or directory " I have been using Kubuntu as my home workstation for some time now but I have managed Windows servers but since I was given the freedom to setup this server I chose Linux.

If I have two nameservers in my resolv.conf, ubuntu only checks the first (and receives a not found reply from there) and never goes to the next two nameservers. This behaviour is very different from windows or other linux systems.

Nov 13, 2010I'm something of a Linux noob I must say. I run a community centre and we've been donated 50 ex government PCs to use in basic computing classes. The machines are HP DC7600 CMT tower base units, all with Windows XP Pro license stickers and blank hard drives obviously. set up a Ubuntu machine to clone Windows XP Pro onto a load of identical machines?
I could install all of them from disk and install drivers from pendrive but that would take forever! I like the idea of seting one up as I like it and cloning it across the LAN. Would save a massive amount of downloading updates for each client too. So far I've followed this guide: [URL] I can only get as far as stating up the drbl service (if that is the correct term?) but the terminal says something along the lines of "unknown command"So far I have one fully built base unit to use as the image, one running Ubuntu 10.4 and a 16 port switch (so I can clone 14 at a time?)

Ubuntu Servers :: Unable To SSH From Outside LAN (Public IP Address)
May 2, 2011Basically I am trying to set up my own server so that I can ssh into it from anywhere. I am able to SSH into my server when I use the LAN IP of my server but I am not able to SSH into it if I use the public IP address. I have read many threads and in my opinion I've tried almost all of the common fixes suggested. One possibility may be that my ISP has blocked port 22. I have taken this into consideration and sent them an email and I'm presently waiting for a reply. However, I highly doubt that my ISP has restricted acess to port 22. I would really like to be able to SSH into my server from anywhere.
1). I installed openssh client/server using the following commands:

2). I forwarded port 22 on my router. (see attachment for the settings)
3). I modified /etc/ssh/sshd_config such that my server has a static LAN address.

When I try to run the instance, I get an error "no resources available. Try --addressing private". When I try addressing private, an ip address 172.19.1.2 is assigned and the instance was running.

1) I am able to run the instances from store (karmic) On running the instance two ips are assigned (public and private) as 10.B.C.X and 172.19.1.2
2) I am able to connect to the instance (10.B.C.X) through ssh (using key)
3) However I am unable to access the instance outside the UEC (using public ip). When I try pinging, I get an error Request timed out or sometimes Destination host unreachable.
4) I have provided the following access using euca-authorize

May 25, 2010I just built out an Ubuntu Server 10.04.
My problem is setting the hostname. I cloned the machine, then normally on the clone, I would change the /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts file.
However, when I do this, upon restart, I get the message, "init hostname main process (some process number) terminated with status 1"Then, when the machine finally boots, the hostname is set to (none). Literally has braces like: user@(none):
I've tried: sudo hostname machine_name but it says can't resolve hostname (none).
I've Google'd around a lot but can't get it. It may have something to do with 10.04? I have been using 9.04, 9.10 with no problems.
