i got an old server with a 64mb flash-disk in.this seems to be the boot-disk.would it be possible to get ubuntu server on this?there is also an ide-disk in.in my opinion it should be good to boot of the flash disk and put the /home or /srv on the ide disk.someone any ideas about this?

I am trying to setup a file server for a small office but have hit a couple of hurdles, is there a step by step guide how to setup a network for windows and mac computers to use it? I had setup a share etc but once I restarted the server all the files disappeared which I had in the home folder? Also when I setup users how can I use passwords that I select as everytime I set one it encrypts it and uses that instead of my one?

Would it be possible to use CUPS and SAMBA for this configuration?
I have looked around a while for the answer, but nothing really fits. Here is the scenario. I have one server and a few openvz VE's running. I want to be able to auth whatever possible with LDAP. I have an LDAP server setup on the host and auth works for the server users. The tricky part for me is that every VE has their own domain. and if I can do that, they will also have the same login for their VE on said domain. I can setup users and the required software on the hosts and guest, but I guess I am confused at how to manage the multiple domain part of things.
not sure if proftp can do 'name based' stuff like apache, but if it can, we can point ftp.clientdomain.foo to the main server and handle it that way.
I am going to try and replace our crappy Windows/imail server with a new ubuntu 10.04 LTS based machine. It will end up with about 400 domains on it with around 3000 users total. 96% of the domains have very light use. 4% of the domains have heavy use but do not send any bulk mail.
Can someone here recommend a mail server software package that would be easy to administrate and easy to backup/replicate? All we need is POP with webmail. We do not need IMAP or want any group/collaborative functions.
What do you usually use for anti-spam on a linux mail server? We want to keep it all open source if possible.
For hardware we are looking at an HP DL360 G5 with dual Xeons, 4G of ram, and the P400 controller with 6 SAS 15k drives. Do you think a server like this will be able to handle the mail on linux? Volume is around 400k messages a day inbound with about 10% being legit/90% being spam. The server will be dedicated to mail hosting and will not host websites.
I installed it on very old machine P3 1200Mhz and it works ok but I have problem with text mode because I have 75x132 aprocs. text on screen and I don't see what I type or system replay. Is there simple way to change to 25x80 or something with greater letters. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have spent some time testing out different backup solutions for my small home office during the last weeks, but still haven't found anything that have been working out too well yet. We can definitely work with a non-GUI script if that's what it takes, if only the requirements are fulfilled:
- Upload to Amazon S3 Europe. We get unbelievable slow uploading speed to US, so uploading 400+ GB of data will not be happening anytime this year...
- Incremental backups - only changed files shall be uploaded or we will have a big bill from Amazon in the end of each month..
- Files should not be uploaded in one big per-folder archive. This is not efficient at all, since if we change one file in a subfolder, a huge two-digit GB sized file would have to be uploaded during next backup. Not good for economy again, or traffic overhead on our internet connection.
I have been using Trixbox CE for a couple of years and a client has asked me to setup a VOIP system with two phones and a couple of extensions. When he gets hit with a borage of phone calls I need to have the call that are behind the others to go the the next extension. I need redundancy if one Internet connection goes down and have the another kick in or failover. I pretty much followed every step but commented out these two lines from the /etc/xinet.d/tftp.

Do we really need the lines if I am allowing any machine to connect? And I have only 1 network card. This is acting as a dedicated TFTP server.I ask as I get an error on the get and put commands as below:

However although it gives an error it DOES GET the file.The put command however does NOT put the file. I have nobody / nogroup setup for the directory permissions as well.

It is working well and all, but I am curious as to how to make it send out email alerts to my team when a commit occurs.Also, are their any good GUI tools to manage a subversion server in Ubuntu. I would like to setup a reliable webserver, mail server, DNS and Dynamic DNS, DHCP, SQL, FTP, Samba (with Roaming Profiles), PXE Boot Server.I know how to setup most of the server modules, i would just like to know the best way to do it tho. The setup is for a home network, but the server used as a file server will have a web server as well. If someone manages to get access to the server I don't want them to be able to read the files.
I am trying to setup a DNS server on my local network. When I set linux clients to use it, it works as expected. However, when I set windows clients to it, the root name doesn't resolve. For example, I have a zone called daniel. On linux "anything.daniel" resolves to the correct ip as does "daniel" which is the behavior I want. However, on windows 7, "anything.daniel" resolves correctly, but "daniel" doesn't. I am new to BIND9 so my config is mostly copy and pasted. View 4 Replies View RelatedI would like to backup my entire Ubuntu installation (/boot, swap and /) at /dev/sda (4GB) to /dev/sdb (10GB).I recreated the exact partitions on /dev/sdb, formatted and cp -rp all the files over.For /boot, I used

It didn't boot successfully as the system kept rebooting. I then tried to install grub onto the MBR and boot partition (mounted at /mnt/tempboot).

Since Ubuntu and other Linux Distros are free to download and distribute. Would it be illegal for me to have a Small Business of my own that would charge individuals/small-businesses to Install and Setup Linux desktops. I wasn't sure how that GPL license worked. I figured I would be charging individuals for setting up Linux Desktops on their machines or small business/offices and training/teaching them on the various applications they could install on their own.
Also, would it be illegal to create websites using Apache, Tomcat and other Open Source tools and then sell those sites. I figured many people are turned off by learning or installing something other than Windows desktops on their pcs, just because it is different. If this cannot be done under the GPL license, then could someone tell me how I could go about starting my own small business to legally Setup/Install Linux distributions.

On my network I have about 3 computers however only I only use 2 of them so I thought that maybe I could use the third computer in such a way that I could access it 24/7 from the internet as a server for all of my files (school papers, music etc etc...). View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to setup an OpenVPN server in bridged mode (Ubuntu 10.04 Lts). The goal is for the clients to be able to reach all the servers behind Openvpn server's lan. I have followed the official OpenVPN guide for Ubuntu 10.04.
My network setup is:
Private lan: 10.90.90.0-255 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.90.90.1
Openvpn server ip: 10.90.90.8
Gateway public ip: 79.xxxxxxxxx
I have forward port 1195 to the Vpn server through my gateway firewall.Besides that no other firewall is running.I can connect and ping the server both from windows and ubuntu clients. The difference is that from windows I can reach the private lan but not from ubuntu clients.
