I have installed BIND 9.7.3 using yum in Fedora (dns server) and created all necessary .conf and zone fil es. I am successfully able to resolve domain names on this host machine (dns server). for example dig @dns.domain.lan client1.domain.lan correctly resolves domain name.

I am trying to install a Red Hat cluster on my servers. In order to configure an heart bit between the servers I must give a valid multicast address. I wanted to know if there is a way to validate a multicast address before using it. For example if it is already in use i don't want to use it.
I read a little about it and there is a Perl module called IO::Socket::Multicast: [URL] There is a tool called mcasttrest.pl: [URL] Oracle use it to test multicast. But I am not sure what will do the trick in Red Hat cluster.

I have started to setup VMs with a netinstall-image and now want to add more software using apt-get. As most of the software I will use is already installed on my host-machine I wonder if there is any way to configure apt in such a way that it will not download packages from the internet, but will use the packages from my host-machine to save network-traffic. Is there a good may to populate VMs using the debs from the host-machine.

A connection from mainserver to vserver1 or vserver2 is not possible; a ssh connection from mainserver to vserverx ends with a login to mainserver.
In the ipv4 code i was using "ip_mc_join_group()" to join the multicast group. but i cannot find a similar function for ipv6 i have found one ipv6_sock_mc_join() but this function is not available for use with my module as it is not exported.

backing up my laptop files
XBMC
ZoneMinder
Due to the number of times that I manage to break it, I have now thought about setting it up as a base system but with virtual machines looking after the seperate 'components'. The machine is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ with 2Gb RAM. First of all do you think it is powerful enough to run XBMC and ZM in seperate virtual machines? - I appreciate the more RAM the better but at the moment I am sticking to 2Gb.
I was also wondering what sort of issues may arise for the audio and video areas I will be using. XBMC currently outputs through an HDMI cable to the TV and ZM recieves video signals through a seperate video card. ( I have had my concerns in the past that there have been conflicts in the way I have set things up!). I have read a number of guides about setting a system up with virtual machines but not really found any articles about the practicalities of using such a set up at home. before I commit and spend a week pulling my hair out trying to get it all to work!
I've been learning linux for a while now with half an eye on making a career out of it in future. One sizeable gap in my knowledge at the moment is networking. Is it feasible/desirable to set up a network of virtual machines to use as an environment to learn networking? My budget is non-existent so I was hoping to be able to get a basic understanding of the principles from installing a few desktops, a virtual gateway etc on VMware workstation on my laptop, and doing a lot of reading online.
Is this feasible, or will I just end up learning about virtual networks instead of real ones? Also how much power would be required, because my 3GB RAM lappy has just gone bang and all I have now is a (new) 1GB RAM lappy.
I am trying to build a file server with RAID 5 over a couple of 1TB HDDs, to serve about 10 client machines using Ubuntu Server. I already own a 22-port switch: HP ProCurve v1810G-24 Switch (J9450A), which I am assuming will do the job. And for the actual server I am thinking of buying: HP ProLiant DL120 1U. Will this hardware suffice, or am I missing something important to get the whole thing running?

I have 3 windows computers and just bought linux server. All of them are currently connected to switch. There is also Wireless AP connected to switch and ADSL router connected to switch (yeah, I know its possible to buy a 3in1 but this was bought piecemeal). ADSL is doing the DHCP and I'm not using any other advanced services.
Now, I want to route everything over the linux server. I got the 3 LAN cards for him (one for wireless, one for LAN and one for ADSL) but when I connect everything this way its not working (surprise surprise). I'm following Linux Advanced Routing & Traffic Control HOWTO but its surprisingly sparse on the topic of network setup and i dont know how to proceed now. Since the server will be a choke point I presume I need to setup DHCP server on him? First question is: can I use same netmask on all of these subnets? Ubuntu DHCP server guide uses both static and DHCP and am not sure if I should also use static on some routes or is it ok to use DHCP on all.
Also, when I was installing ubuntu server only one LAN card was used (eth2) so ifconfig shows only lo and eth2, but when I do ifconfig eth0 up and ifconfig eth1 up it doesnt look like its working. Anyway, hope somebody has some tips to point me in the right direction, primarily DHCP server setup and if I missed any steps...
I have a couple of user accounts where each member belongs to a group i have created: Each user access the share using their own user account credentials.
How can I configure Samba in a way so that each modification done on the share gets the owner of the user and my group instead of the user and the users own group? I would also like the access rights to be 770 to each modification.
In other words, today each modification by "userA" get the owner "userA.userA" and I would like it to be "userA.MyGroup" with "rwxrwx---" permissions.
I'm using at struct sockaddr_in to receive multicast data sent out from another machine. When I print out the source address using inet_ntoa it gives me the source address of the PC that sent the data. This is ok but I would like to know if there is a way of getting the multicast address that the data was 'sent to'. I know I can see the multicast address in tcpdump being directed to my PC but I would like to be able to display the multicast address too? Is this possible or does the sockaddr_in give me the source address of the packet not the multicast address that the packet was sent to?

While an ethernet multicast address always starts with 01:00:5E. Changing the last 23 bits of the IP address into hexadecimal form and "adding" them to the first 24 bits we find the ethernet address but what about the missing bit??? For istance I have: 230.11.111.10 = 11100110.00001011.01101111.00001010 So converting the last 23 bits I have b:6f:a The final ethernet address will be 01:00:5E:b:6f:a . And what about the missing bit?

Can a VM play games, like Dragon Age Origins or Civilization V? (Possibly with poorer framerates and/or lower resolution, but does it play at all?) I have a few mail servers, a mail log server and a web server running on Centos 5. Now I have a task: to avoid accidental crashes on the production servers while installing updates, my boss asked me to do clones (these clones will all be VMware virtual machines) of the servers (EXCLUDING the actual e-mails and log contents) and then to run those clones on VMWare Server. This way, first I will install and test updates on the clones and - if they will be running without crashes - I will apply the updates on the real production servers themselves.
