Ubuntu Servers :: Release Upgrade Utility On A Live Server?
Sep 8, 2010
Does anyone have any experiences to share regarding this? Our server is still running Hardy and, of course, the time is rapidly approaching where I need to upgrade to the latest LTS. Now, I'm sure a complete re-installation would obviously be preferred, but I noticed that there's a release upgrade feature for Ubuntu server. Is this reliable enough to use on our production server without wrecking everything? I really don't want to have to go through the process of configuring software RAID and all our other services again.
Obviously I'll take normal precautions such as making tons of backups and starting the process on a weekend so if the proverbial poo hits the fan I can work over the weekend and have everything up and rolling by monday. This server is not exposed to the outside world as a webserver or anything like that so it can afford to be down over the weekend (although not preferable since we have financial cron jobs and such running in the wee hours of the morning).

I hope this is the right section, it looks like though. I have a small nas ( via artigo a2000 ) with 2 sata hd 1tb each with raid 1 and lvm on top configured and working great.
sda1 and sdb1 ==> md0 raid1 for /boot
sda2 and sdb2 ==> md1 raid1 for swap
sda3 and sdb3 ==> md2 raid1 as physical volume then volume group and lvs on top ( / is a logial volume of these )
I wish to upgrade the current fedora 12 32bit installation I have on it doing a fresh install. But because I have a lot of data on md2 ( 600GB worth ) which I don't want to copy across somewhere else first, I need to know how ( i am pretty sure i can ) to mount md2 during the installation. This way I can use the data I already have on it.

I was told I need to build / configure a RHEL 5.1 server. I did so using the old ISO I downloaded from Red Hat's site. My question is if I do a 'yum upgrade' command, will that then change my release date from 5.1 to 5.5?

I installed the RC of Lucid on an old AMD X2 5600 w/4GB DDR2 ram, and put it in the other room and installed LAMP on it to use as a local development server. It works beautifully over the network.
1. There will be an upgrade option to go from RC to final release, right?
2. When upgrading, will this kill my LAMP install? I really don't wanna go from scratch now that I have it all up and running with a load of CMS systems installed for test environments

I have a local apt-mirror on my network that I use to upgrade my Ubuntu and Debian systems; works great, had it for years, used it to do release upgrades in the past. This time I'm trying to upgrade a fairly recently-installed 64-bit Lucid kubuntu machine to Maverick. When I try, I get this error:
Code:
After your package information was updated the essential package 'ubuntu-minimal' can not be found anymore.
This indicates a serious error, please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report.Anyone know the proper way to do this?

Have just installed 10.04 in the lure to get 10.10, the latest release(Guys out there at the Launchpad have become SMART & thwarted an another attempt of mine to fetch a free CD again!)Update Manager shows up relevant updates of upto 301.something MBs in size BUT is not reflecting the latest release 10.10?!
Went to the settings to try out "Normal Release" under Release upgrade options, but nothing shows up on 10.10. When can I expect 10.10 start getting reflected within Update Manager?

My system locked up while copying files last night. My RAID array will not start. I did verify my UUID's. (Lesson learned.) I do not understand a few things.1. Why do different drives show "active sync" on different drives? 2. Why does "Disk Utility" tell me the RAID is not running and when I try to assemble the RAID, mdadm returns: mdadm: device /dev/md0 already active - cannot assemble itWhen I try to start the RAID using "Disk Utility":
Code:
Error assembling array: mdadm exited with exit code 1: mdadm: cannot open device /dev/sdd1: Device or resource busy
mdadm: /dev/sdd1 has no superblock - assembly aborted
So, I examine sdd1:
Code:
sudo mdadm -E /dev/sdd1

I am currently trying to upgrade the Apache installation on our server from v2.2.14 to v2.2.19 using:
[URL] as a guide.
Unfortunately I seem to have hit some walls. When trying to execute ./config.nice I get the following error:
./config.nice: 33: /build/buildd/apache2-2.2.14/configure: not found
Google have not yielded any results as yet. If I leave out this step and use configure, make and make install, v2.2.19 gets installed, but to a different directory and all the config will need to be reformatted as it seems it does not use the Ubuntu Apache config structure.

I've tried removing and re-installing proftpd, but this doesn't help
If I comment line 18 in modules.conf, I just get permission denied on the next LoadModule command...
Can I remove all modules? or is there a way of fixing the permission denied issue?

A week or so ago I ran an aptitude safe-upgrade and while it was updating mysql I suffered a power-failure. Now, this never really happens in Holland but of course this once it happened at the worst possible time.
I've tried a lot of different things to get mysql working again, but am running into all kinds of problems. First mysql won't shut off properly (it does startup with the computer but I can't connect to it at all) during an aptitude purge. If I kill the process mysql seems to purge properly, but I guess this is not the case because I wasn't able to install it then.
Things seem to have gone a bit more smoothly this time, however:
Code:
snek@snek-server:~$ sudo aptitude install mysql-server

If I install a server edition and after that I install Gnome and all other ubuntu-desktop applications on that server. Will these
applications be supported through the whole server support time? In other words, what exactly does it mean that the server is supported for longer? Is the number or applications available to the server smaller than to the desktop?Or, similarly, could I build a Server-long supported desktop by hand?
