Ubuntu :: 10.04 Update Manager Not Showing Up 'Release Upgrade'
Feb 16, 2011
Have just installed 10.04 in the lure to get 10.10, the latest release(Guys out there at the Launchpad have become SMART & thwarted an another attempt of mine to fetch a free CD again!)Update Manager shows up relevant updates of upto 301.something MBs in size BUT is not reflecting the latest release 10.10?!
Went to the settings to try out "Normal Release" under Release upgrade options, but nothing shows up on 10.10. When can I expect 10.10 start getting reflected within Update Manager?

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 beta a couple of days back. This is the first time I am using a beta release. Some programs are crashing, although not frequently.
My question is - WHEN THE FINAL VERSION OF UBUNTU 10.04 IS AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD, IS IT MANDATORY TO DOWNLOAD THE ENTIRE ? OR WILL UPDATING OR UPGRADING VIA THE system ---- administration --- update manager will upgrade my current beta version to the final release ???

I'm now using Ubuntu 9.04 and I think of upgrading it to version 10.04 (when it shall be "stable").I'd like to know if I am supposed to modify /etc/apt/sources.list with the name of the new version even though I upgrade by "update-manager-core" with the command sudo do-release-upgrade

The strangest thing is going on. I just did a fresh install of 9.10; however, apt-get upgrade returns different results then Update Manger found under System > Administration > update Manager. In addition, the apt-get upgrade method excludes a few upgrades from being installed. These upgrades are bind9, and a few for FireFox. Has anyone run into this issue recently?

Finally I have been waiting for 11.04 to be released, but It is not showing up on the update manager to upgrade. The LTS release only is checked in the settings. Do I have to manually upgrade or do I have to install 10.10 then 11.04? or is it that the servers are quite busy?

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10. The Update Manager originally showed the update to Ubuntu 10.04 and I pressed the update button. Midway through the update, my internet died so I just cancelled the update. My internet is working again and I'm trying to update but the update manager won't show the update button. I've pressed check a bunch of times and installed all the other updates but I can't see the distribution update.

I'm running 9.10 and did not upgrade to 10.4 because I thought I'd just wait tor 10.10. However, if I go to Sys/Admin.>Update Manager>'check'>'install'>'check' I do not get informed of upgrade choices.I am trying not to do an install with this because then I would have to reload and reset everything including 80+ CD's. Please help if you can.I know I have to Ugrade to 10.4 before I can upgrade to 10.10, however my update manger offers neither option after installing updates and rechecking.

I was using Ubuntu 10.04 and ran the upgrade. System > About now says I am now using 11.04. However, System > Administration > Update Manager says New Ubuntu release '11.04' available > Upgrade. Should I run the upgrade again, or is there a quicker way to fix this?

When I run the update manager in XUbuntu (natty/11:04) it does not show its progress while installing the upgrades.
After clicking on "install updates" and authenticating, there used to be a popup window with a progress bar and an option to show "details" but these appear to have disappeared in the last few days.
I don't recall switching these features off and there are no settings to restore them, available within the GUI. Is there another way of restoring this functionality?
If not, is a reinstall the way to go? If so what package(s) need re-installing? And in-case it is a configuration script, what files in my home directory need deleting to ensure a clean reinstall.

I'm running 8.04 on my desktop system. I haven't used it in quite awhile, but I logged in today to find 100+ updates and figured I may as well update the system.
Then I realized that unlike my other Ubuntu machines, I don't have a "New distribution release is available" prompt in the update manager.
I went ahead and ran the 100 updates and rebooted and still don't see that option.
What's the best way to upgrade to 9.10?

Update Manager wants me to update to Firefox 3.5.7. I'm currently running 64-bit Firefox 3.5.6. I'd like to update, but Update Manager says nothing about this 3.5.7 being the 64-bit version. If I upgrade from the UM, I don't know if I'll be getting 32-bit or 64-bit FF. How can I tell beforehand which one I'll get?

As stated on the title Ubuntu 10.10 does not appear on the Update Manager in order to do the Upgrade. I really don't want to download it and burn it on a CD in order to Upgrade my Laptop. My current version is 10.04 LTS.

Before you answer I am just curious about this. I certainly would never do this nor recommend it. However because I have never tried this I was curious if it actually would happen. At the end of Lenny, would it pop up in the update-manager-gnome that a new release "Squeeze" is available? I am just curious.

Basically, the update manager pops up and... nothing happens. It checks for updates but doesn't indicate upgrade availability.Running other commands like apt-get distribution-upgrade also doesn't do anything.
I think the problem is the fact that I've installed a bunch of software from rep's and ppa's via ubuntu-tweak that are more recent than the ones in Ubuntu's rep, but I can't been sure. Also, I've deactivated all third party rep's and ppa's, but I still have a bunch of software installed via those sources.

I'm trying to do an online upgrade from 8.04 to 10.04 using the update manager. Since update manager did not indicate that there was and upgrade, I used the update-manager --devel-release command to initiate the process. The upgrade stops during while looking for channels with the following error message:
A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort of network problem, please check your network connection and retry.
W:Failed to fetch
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dis...kports/Release Unable
to find expected entry main/debian-installer/binary-i386/Packages in
Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)
E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. I don't believe this to be a network problem because it fails in the same place every time. I don't see the entry for debian-installer in the Release file which I believe is why the error is occuring, however, I'm not sure what to do about it. It seems like something is pointed to the wrong place. I've maintained this system with update-manager for several years and never had a problem.

I was so impressed by the screen-shots of 10.04 LTS that i wanted upgrade via the update manager( am using karmic 9.10).Everything went well with downloading the new packages till the point of installation of downloaded packages. Halfway through the installation power went off and when i restarted the system it was stuck at some point with the message
Code: mount: nothing to mount in /dev or something like that. Then i restarted the system in recovery mode and ran "dpkg" to fix broken packages hoping it would fix the issue. It did to some extent that i was type the problem here through the affected system.
The problem is i couldn't send the crash report the first time around and i can't get hold of it now.My system is somewhere between karmic and lucid ("About Ubuntu" shows as karmic and System Monitor shows it as lucid").So i how do i get a clean installation of lucid?

I'm noticing that maybe twice a month the Update Manager is asking me to upgrade my kernel. Currently it's asking me to move to 2.6.32.24.25. Is this the smart thing to do? Are these primarily securtiy updates to the kernel?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 desktop edition on one of my machines and its connected to internet via network proxy with username/password authentication enabled.
I've provided proxy details in Synaptic Package Manager and also in System -> Preferences -> Network Proxy. I can see any new updated libraries when I check Update Manager, but somehow I do not see the notice of availability of Ubuntu 10.10 and hence not able to upgrade.
On my home laptop (Dell Inspiron 700m) which connects to internet directly and over there I was able to upgrade to 10.10
So I think there is some problem with respect to update manager where it cant see the new release available behind proxy.

Ubuntu Studio (no idea what version, no idea how to find out) Update Manager has been saying 10.04 is ready for quite some time, but I cannot install the upgrade. The first time, more than a month ago, it had problems with Java and aborted. This time it couldn't find a repository in NZ so it threw up its (virtual) hands and gave up. Should I even try to upgrade? I keep installing maintenance and security updates (except Adobe Flash Player which Adobe cannot identify). It does most of what I want it to do. Does 10.04 (or 10.10) really matter? Assuming I try for US 10.04 LTS again, how do I get it past its problems?

I'm on a fully updated and upgraded 9.10, and when I do update-manager -d, I don't get the button to do an upgrade to 10.04! What could cause this? I've tried the -d, -c, --check-dist-upgrades, --devel-release, -p, --proposed, and --dist-upgrade. I'm completely up to date on 9.10, but I want to upgrade to 10.04!

I'm trying to upgrade Karmic to Lucid. I open the update manager, click the "upgrade" button, and then again the "upgrade" button in the window that pops up. Then it just closes down. When running the update manager from a terminal, the only output is "Segmentaion fault".

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and I'd like to know when does the update manager upgrade the system to Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. I do not want it to do the upgrade too early,as this might cause problems.I heard they're going to release Natty by the end of April, when it passes the beta stage but it will take 3-4 months for the bugs to be fixed. Also, please answer my other thread,it has new posts: [URL]
