Ubuntu :: Support For GNOME In Server Release?

Feb 2, 2010

If I install a server edition and after that I install Gnome and all other ubuntu-desktop applications on that server. Will these
applications be supported through the whole server support time? In other words, what exactly does it mean that the server is supported for longer? Is the number or applications available to the server smaller than to the desktop?Or, similarly, could I build a Server-long supported desktop by hand?

Debian Installation :: Jessie 8.1 - Mirror Does Not Support Specified Release

Jun 17, 2015

I am doing a new Debian install on an older Dell laptop (Latitude D520, but that should not matter). I downloaded the net install .iso, burned it to disk, and ran it. Everything was progressing like any other installation I have done until I was asked to pick the mirror. I chose ftp.us.debian.org like I normally do and it was rejected. When I checked the output on virtual console 4, I am seeing the message "mirror does not support the specified release (jessie)."

I tried a bunch of random mirrors, including international ones, and they all give me that message.

Ubuntu Installation :: Mini Iso Installer Crash - Error "mirror Does Not Support The Specified Release (natty)"

May 24, 2011

I have been trying to use the amd64 version of the natty mini iso installer. The installer crashes with the log stating bad address us.archive.ubuntu.com. This is true for any archive I select. error is: mirror does not support the specified release (natty) Anyone know of a working mirror or if one will ever work? Not a confidence builder in the development.

I also tried the Maveric version of the mini iso. It also crashes with complaints about a bad kernel. So far a wasted day. Just add to this I tried the normal natty iso. The problem is in the manual partitioning. It locks up solid while trying to set partitions. Is there a later release of the iso?

Debian Multimedia :: Gnome 3 Final Release To Repositories?

Mar 22, 2011

I am wondering about when Gnome 3 is released, how long until it's in the "stable" repositories?I have generally used Ubuntu, but I don't like the Unity interface they are pushing out in the next version, so I am greatly considering simply using Debian. Debian also is my first consideration because Ubuntu is based off it.But, I want to try the Gnome 3 interface first. I already have Debian installed and updated, and am now simply waiting on the GUI.

Server :: Driver Support - QME2572 - Qlogic - Card Became Support By The Kernel

Jul 10, 2011

I'm trying to find out when QME2572 (Qlogic) card became support by the kernel. We have a RHEL 5.1 system that is moving to new hardware, however the kernel at this release doesn't support the new hardware, due to the Qlogic card change. I tired the Redhat KB and Bugzilla. Is there a Kernel change list etc I can search. Never really played around with the kernel too much so I'm just after some pointers for looking up this information. Offically its not supported until Redhat 5.3, I'm trying trying to research kernel info so I can tell the customer they have to upgrade.

Ubuntu :: Gnome Doesn't Support A 'reboot Into [OS]' Feature?

Feb 5, 2010

Since Gnome doesn't support a 'reboot into [OS]' feature, one has to use a script. Such a script would be used in both windows (probably batch file) and linux (maybe python?) to replace the GRUB menu file and by that select the OS in which you want to boot on reboot. Both OS's should run another script on startup to put the default menu file back.

Problems:- Ext4: there are no windows drivers available (yet)(they would have to support reading and writing)- GRUB2: the old GRUB menu was very easy, one had to edit just one file (!or replace it!). In GRUB2 things got complicated. I think you can edit grub.cfg and that it will still work, the reason why you should not edit it is just because it gets overwritten by running update-grub2. But I'm not sure. If - The script I found is used to edit the Grub file, not to replace it with another one. (This is but a minor problem.)

Solutions:- Ext4 is mountable with Ext2fsd (not with Ext2ifs because of the inode size), it has been reported to work with extent enabled, but I haven't tested it yet. Here is a tutorial to mounting Ext4 drives in windows (which require disabling extent)- If editing the grub.cfg would really be a bad idea, downgrading to GRUB (legacy)- If I couldn't mount Ext4, trying to put Grub on a separate FAT/NTFS partition (is this possible with Grub/Grub2?) or else downgrading to Ext3 (= slower)

Ubuntu Servers :: Release Upgrade Utility On A Live Server?

Sep 8, 2010

Does anyone have any experiences to share regarding this? Our server is still running Hardy and, of course, the time is rapidly approaching where I need to upgrade to the latest LTS. Now, I'm sure a complete re-installation would obviously be preferred, but I noticed that there's a release upgrade feature for Ubuntu server. Is this reliable enough to use on our production server without wrecking everything? I really don't want to have to go through the process of configuring software RAID and all our other services again.

Obviously I'll take normal precautions such as making tons of backups and starting the process on a weekend so if the proverbial poo hits the fan I can work over the weekend and have everything up and rolling by monday. This server is not exposed to the outside world as a webserver or anything like that so it can afford to be down over the weekend (although not preferable since we have financial cron jobs and such running in the wee hours of the morning).

Ubuntu Installation :: Server 9.10 _Karmic Koala_ - Release Amd64 (20091027.2)'

Feb 14, 2010

This has really thrown me. I have been using Ubuntu for a few years now and have just decided to upgrade my home server with a bigger hard drive. I have opted for a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 x64 server edition and have plugged my new SATA hard drive and existing IDE CDRom drive into my box.

The install disk burns fine and verifys itself. I have also checked that it is ok as part of the install and again it shows as all ok. The install starts fine and I can partition the drive (either mannually or guided) abd the base system starts to install but then at around 50% (roughly) I get a pop up box saying:

"Please insert the disc labeled: 'Ubuntu-Server 9.10 _Karmic Koala_ - Release amd64 (20091027.2)' in the drive /cdrom/' and press enter. Pressing enter does nothing. I can't eject the CD any way and obvioulsy have no second disk! I have burnt a fresh downloaded iso but again have the same problem.

Fedora :: Get EPS Image Support For A Gnome Browser?

Jul 22, 2009

I am trying to figure out how to get EPS image support for a Gnome image browser, in particular Eye of Gnome (EOG) -- the default image viewer in Gnome. In Nautilus, thumbnails appear fine for EPS images, but when opening them in Eye of Gnome or gThumb, neither program can open the images. EOG says "unsupported file format", and gThumb shows a blank screen. Apparently both programs can get additional image support, but I can't seem to get it to work.

I have ghostscript updated to the latest version, and I'm using Fedora 10.

Anybody know how to do this?

I currently have a server that is running on the Linux kernel 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5xen and I was wondering if it was possible to upgrade it to a new official Red Hat non-xen kernel(currently 2.6.37.1).What is unique about this kernel is that it is NOT a virtual system kernel but an older XEN kernel with proprietary material removed. If it is possible I was wondering about any repercussions that may occur as a result of said update. This would include, any issues with potential data/driver losses as well as recovery procedures that may be used if something would happen to it during the upgrade.

Fedora Networking :: Gnome 3 Network Proxy Support (15)?

Aug 31, 2011

My work uses a proxy server to mediate connections to the internet. However, changing the proxy settings in NetworkManager seems to have no effect. When I change the proxy settings in firefox from "use system proxy" to the actual proxy settings then it connects fine - but I would much rather be able to change the system proxy so that it works with all applications.

This is not confined to firefox - I have the same problem trying to use wget in gnome shell. However ftp works fine. I have just looked at the environment variables and it appears that NetworkManager is not setting the http_proxy variable (it is however setting ftp_proxy and https_proxy).

Is there a way to make the Gnome terminal app support output search? or is there a better terminal app that support searching output natively?

Server :: Takes Time To Release File Handles - Get Corrupted - Deleted Too

Aug 26, 2010

The app in linux server(CentOS 5.3) uses files from a mount directory(Shared windows directory in read only mode). At the same time, the same file might be edited by user in windows env. We were assuming that as the windows folders are mounted in read-only mode in linux so any change done by user in windows environment would be fail safe i.e. can be safely committed to the file. But when the file concurrently used both by Linux and as well by windows, at some point linux does not release the file handles and the files get corrupted(deleted too). Earlier we were using win2k server and this step was hardly reproducible and win2k was releasing file handles quickly. But with centos, we really had touch time managing files.

Fedora Installation :: GNOME 3 Support For Intel Graphics Chips And Nomodest

May 27, 2011

[A word of explanation: initially the post below followed a post by Adam Williamson in another thread devoted to inability to load GNOME 3 in VM; this is why I address Adam in the opening.]

Adam, the situation with the GNOME 3 support for Intel integrated graphics seems to be a little confusing. You are probably among the most competent to clarify it.

Let me tell my own story first.

I was installing earlier today Fedora 15 on an HP dm4-1160US laptop with i5 and Intel graphics, and the anaconda installer hung right after "Waiting for hardware to initialize..." flashed on the screen, before even Media Check screen was reached. I tried a few times, always with the sae result: anaconda hung. Then I decided to add nomodeset to the boot parameters and the anaconda installer went on and I was able to complete the installation without a slightest problem.

I rebooted and without a problem reached the GDM login screen. When logging into GNOME, a pop-up window informed me that the system was unable to load GNOME and that instead I would be logged into the fall back mode. By the way, I haven't experienced the problems that plagued "Classic GNOME" on another laptop of mine where instead of clean install I preupgraded from Fedora 14 (strictly following the guidelines for preupgrading).

Wireless card was recognized and wlan initialized, nearby wireless networks seen, yet I wasn't able to connect to my own wireless network (I tried to do this already in the process of installation, equally unsuccessfully).

I was able to connect via Ethernet cable, and then I proceeded to perform yum update.

The update brought a new kernel. I went into grub.conf and noticed that nomodeset has been automatically added to the boot parameters for each of the two kernels. I decided to perform an experiment: I removed nomodeset from the boot options for the new kernel, and left it in place for the anaconda installed kernel.

I rebooted into the new kernel. Right after the grub menu disappeared, the screen turned pitch black and stayed this way for good 10 seconds. I thought that the former situation repeats itself making impossible to boot without the nomodeset option. Suddenly, the screen lit up and the GDM login screen appeared.

I logged into a shiny GNOME 3 where I am writing these words right now. Ah, and I was also able to connect to the wireless (I made yet another attempt using the network manager applet -- this time it worked).

What does that seem to indicate? That GNOME 3 support is already available for Intel graphics chips? But one may need to play with the nomodeset cheatcode, as I described this above?

But since I upgraded, I've been unable to open the System > Help and Support or the System > About Ubuntu. A tab on the bottom of the screen appears, saying "Starting Help and Support," and then goes away after 10 seconds. This doesn't change if I'm connected to the internet or not.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: IceCast - MP3 Support On Server

Jan 13, 2010

The primary domain is already setup and configured under Apache, and IceCast is already installed, but here is where the problems start showing up.

It's my understanding that Ices2 cannot serve MP3's but only OGG files through IceCast. So just for the sake of testing and wanting to get a sample stream working, I placed a public domain OGG file into /etc/icecast2/music/ and called it "book.ogg."

I installed the latest version of openssl which is now openssl-1.0.0 I ran the following commands:

./config enable-tlsext --prefix=/usr/local2 --openssldir=/usr/local2/openssl
make
make test
make install

then to recompile apache with new SNI support I ran the following:

./configure --enable-so --enable-ssl --enable-rewrite --enable-unique-id --with-ssl=/usr/local2/openssl

make install

After that when I start Apache: /usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl -k start I get the following error:

SSLStrictSNIVHostCheck failed; OpenSSL is not built with support for TLS extensions and SNI indication. Refer to the documentation, and build a compatible version of OpenSSL.
