I just built a server, which displays 8 cores in the i7 processor. However, because of the 2 threads per core, it shows up as an 8 core system. When viewing htop, it shows system loads at 0.29,0.18, and 0.13 for respective averaging times. How would I calculate actual system load for this processor? Would I divide the average by 4 or 8? Or, is there another method?
View 7 RepliesAfter installing FC11 on my Mac Mini intel terminals, I noticed the network config GUI is completely broke, So I continued with a hand configuration.
Everything seems ok eth0 is up , it has the correct IP, DNS and default gateway, but browser quieries take forever to load.
E.g. if I type Google in the browser it takes about 20seconds before it loads the page.
To add insult to injury, I have a 16Mbit/s Down 2.5Mbit/s uplink. the other 10 or so rackservers on the network responds fast, so it is nothing to do with the network or connection. They all run FC7-9.
The problem is squarely with FC11 and must be some bug not reading or resolving DNS correctly.
Anyone have an idea how I can figure this out with FC-11.
It seems to be the worst FC distro.
I generally was happy with all FC6-9, but 11 really sucks (the ppc version wont even install on my ppc terminals)
That the Mighty Mouse Wireless, worlks out of the box is very nice though, but that is all.
Running 9.04 Xubuntu desktop as server and development environment. I turn off gdm once booted up. When sshing in for other computer I ran htop, and found the following multiple processes:

Is there any good reason why I have multiples of these, or conversely is there a problem by having them? Everything works OK. Apache is only serving up my web development pages which I work on now and then, so its not having to handle external traffic. The server is port forwarded on port 80 through the router.
Is it possible to have htop display a graph in the panel same as System monitor does?

View 1 Replies View RelatedThe screen will show a blinking cursor for a few seconds. The keyboard works and a signal is found for the speakers. Then the 'Ubuntu' loading screen will show but at this point the screen would freeze and the keyboard will cease to function. At this point I have to reboot from the on/off switch. It can take several attempts before the desktop will load, or if I'm lucky, it'll load up first time. I've had this problem since 9.10. I'm not quite sure why it's taken me this long to attempt to sort it out.

View 1 Replies View RelatedJust recently installed fedora 11 64-bit on my laptop. Everything was fine until today. Everytime I boot up, it crashes right after the desktop loads. Everything is loaded except the area where the running programs are on the taskbar is just one big white block. And a bubble popup says "New SELinux security alert. AVC denial." but everything is frozen. Can't move the cursor or use keyboard. and nothing is happening on the screen. Completly frozen. Anybody have any ideas on what is wrong and how to fix it?

my data resides in a partition sda2 - in a logical volume lv_root.unless I'm wrong lv_root contains the information on how to load the partition.so superficially it seems the partition must be loaded bofore we get the info on how to load it.
View 20 Replies View RelatedI recently set up a server in my house using Apache 2 running off Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook edition (no, the computer is a desktop). I tried running the website on a few computers in house and all the images and scripts seem to load fine but it is unable to read from the data.xml file through javascript. This leaves all of the web pages empty because all of the content is parsed from the xml file through javascript. I tried debugging with google chrome and after running this code to load the xml file:

the xmlhttp.responseXML is null and the script crashes. Could this be a permission issue? I tried setting the data.xml file to read-write permission for any user but that didn't work.
Where does one look in terms of diagnostics after a system lockup and hard reset? For example, one of my computers, running Fedora 14 i686, has taken to locking up quite a bit lately. My only way out is a hard reset. Now, once the thing is booted back up I'd like to try to figure out where the problem lies. Where do I look? Will any of the log files reveal anything relevant to me? If so, what sort of things would I be looking for. Keywords?
This same box also locked up when I had Fedora 14 x86_64 installed. I had read that there were some issues with the newer 64 bit kernels that were causing lockups and / or extremely high loads. This is why I switched back to the 32 bit version, 2 days ago to be exact. The box gets little use. It's a toy really and not my main "daily use" computer. It is, however, running folding@home. Maybe that's where the problem is. About 15 minutes ago I called home and had my wife reset the box, then I logged in from work and stopped the folding service. I'll have to see if it locks up without folding running. Folding was running on this box when I had the 64 bit version installed also.
I have 2 Ubuntu machines up & running on a small network. Both are running SAMBA servers. One several years old & has a rather old version of Ubuntu. The other, quite new & has a version about 9 months old.The newest has a problem. When working with large & complex Word documents, it will periodically generate an an error on the work station.
"Word failed reading from this fille (xxx specifies file we are working on). Please restore the network connection or replace the floppy disk drive". The it crashes Word & unsaved work is lost.The error never occurs when using the old server, only the new.
I have had a new install of Karmic from CD and have done all updates and added a few applications like VLC and a few others. I have several different media players, Totem, VLC, Xine, and gxine. I started out thinking Totem might be enough, but added VLC as it can handle just about anything, and then the other just to see of any thing happened.
I have installed all restricted and unrestricted packages from the Medibuntu depositories I can find. Still my laptop will not read any kind of DVD. I am region 2, but have tried both bought region 1 and region 2 DVDs. I had this problem last time I installed Ubuntu, but after installations of a few applications and messing about it suddenly worked. I really didn't know why or what suddenly was working.

I am a bit confused about a dual booting system. I Already have windows 7 on my computer and wish to install ubuntu 11.04 but I keep reading about Grub 2. Does grub automatically install with ubuntu or do I need to install it prior to installing ubutu ?

With F11 installed Apache is having permissions issues reading files out of the html directory. Only wants to work with permissions set to read for other. But for commands like top, htop and some other the text file adds some string of characters.Example of running htop > test.txt is shown in the attached image. It seems like Htop tells me I have more than 700MB free, but 'top' and 'free' tell me that I only have about 270MB free.
On a Linux CD/DVD, there are compressed filesystem images for the live version for KDE or Gnome for example, but they have no extension, but they are clearly an image file ( compressed filesystem images for the live version before installation ) !!
I was wondering, How do I mount these compressed filesystem images, after I copy the ISO content of the CD/DVD on my system .... I want to edit some files or packages and make some changes, like if I want to customize a live version of gnome for example ! ... ( I know you might be tempted to tell me to use KIWI etc to customize etc ..... ) ... but I want to be able to mount the compressed file system image, then edit it for reading and writing while it is in a subdirectory on its own ... i want to open it ! ... is there a way to do this ??? ... these type of files have no extension ...
i can open this compressed filesystem image then to edit for read & write ... before I roll it back again ..... If and when I succeed .... what should I watch out for ? ... will the same compressed file image but slightly modified work again ?
PS. that same question could be kind of translated or be extended like : how do I use unionfs/squashfs programs on the command line to mount these image files with no extension for read & write mode ???
htop is my preferred system monitor, but I have a problem with it in Unity: When I open htop from the Applications lens there's no entry in the launcher added for it. This means I can't add it permanently to the launcher. It may have to do with it being a terminal based program, but I was wondering if there is a way to get it permanently added to the launcher?

Is there any sort of performance hit taken if a process uses say, 15 non-concurrent threads vs. 10 non-concurrent threads?
I love using htop, but I have noticed that whenever I sort by a parameter (for example, Shift+m for sorting by Memory usage), the htop stats stop dynamically refreshing. Is this intended? I also notice this with top as well.
