the software will go through the motions and say burn successful and all the disc itself will even have look like its been written (with the burn circle and all), but when its put into the drive afterwards its still empty. My fstab has

for my drives. Both of them do this, wondering if anyone has any idea why it might do this. I know the drives both work fine.
I just booted one of my computers from a usb drive I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to, and when I booted it up on that computer, it worked fine. Then, when I powered down the computer and booted it back up to the main hard drive, it booted to the same that my flash drive was running, but my flash drive was not plugged in!! How is this possible? Did it copy itself over my other operating system? There is no trace of it. By the way, that, too, was ubuntu 10.04.

I have something similar going on with my relatively old (it's core 2 duo I think) monitor-busted laptop for around a year now. But the discspace of that is only 160GB and it's somewhat a pain to always migrate the files. I'm also thinking it would be good storage of lots of big pictures as my brother is a hobbyist turned professional photographer and I am an apprentice of his. It will also be stored with lots of videos and sound files that can be accessed at least through the network.
I'm thinking of at least having it 2TB but there currently are two problems with the current laptop namely: the USB plug of the laptop has serious problems that it disconnects the USB2 randomly then makes it USB1 speed. Secondly, it has bad heat management that it shut downs randomly without a word (or so I think it's because of that it shuts down).
As much as I would like to build from the junk of old computers we don't use, I don't think I have the time recently to make my own NAS and experiment (and even though I'm excited in learning and setting up RAID - I don't think I have that luxury of a time at the moment).
I've been reading last night of devices like Buffalo Link Station and such but most if not all of them have their own preinstalled OS and Google searches doesn't stumble me to an. What I want actually is install Mint LXDE or Lubuntu as I prefer that it has the features and programs I'm currently using right now with the 160GB network storage.
Is there a NAS device in the market I can install Lubuntu or Mint LXDE (yeah, I think LXDE will be the best environment for the things I will do for it)? Or is it still better that I make some time and build my own NAS? Please advice *bows deeply*

I have installed Fedora 11 and I have set it up as a web server with Apache. I have a domain name from GoDaddy that I own and I have set it to my web server. I am able to type the address into a browser on a computer outside of my network and it will pull up the web pages on the server. the problem that I am having is that after I type the URL, it gets replaced with the IP address. [URL] I know that I need a nameserver to resolve the IP address but I can not figure out how to do it. I have tried to use Bind but I can never seem to get it to work.

1) When it gets to the "reading and comparing" phase, it seems to complete in <1s. I see other posts where people say this takes them as long as it took to write to the drive. I don't see any mention of this being quick, so I'm just afraid that badblocks is being denied read access or something.. Anyone familiar with this behaviour?
2) Obviously since it is on a sixth pass, badblocks thought that it found new bad blocks on the second pass (or later). When I check SMART, though, the drive has not re-allocated anything (despite having plenty of spares)... Doesn't this seem odd? Is there some reason why the disk would not step in upon a write fail? In fact, I thought a write fail should be transparent... Which makes me wonder if question 1 (above) is causing this...
I recently set up a server in my house using Apache 2 running off Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook edition (no, the computer is a desktop). I tried running the website on a few computers in house and all the images and scripts seem to load fine but it is unable to read from the data.xml file through javascript. This leaves all of the web pages empty because all of the content is parsed from the xml file through javascript. I tried debugging with google chrome and after running this code to load the xml file:

the xmlhttp.responseXML is null and the script crashes. Could this be a permission issue? I tried setting the data.xml file to read-write permission for any user but that didn't work.
I decided to install Maverick on another PC in the house. I downloaded and burnt the 10:10 live CD three weeks ago and installed it on my laptop without problem.
Now when try to install on this it read the CD as first boot device, goes to the language selection, and then the "try without installing/Install/check disk" etc. I select either "install" or "try without installing" and after s few seconds the drive spins down and thats it...nothing more happens.
I know the CD's fine as I already installed with it and the PC in question currently has a working version of Karmic on it. PC is an Acer L100 and the CD is the 32 bit version.
Update: After posting this I've played around a bit more. It seems most attempts it doesnt want to read the Live CD at all. After trying to boot from it and displaying the copyright line "isolinux..." it jump straight GRUB and boots my present OS. I've just tried the Karmic CD too and the same thing is happening. So maybe points to a problem with the CD drive??
How do I get my CD-ROM drive to read its contents? I am trying to read a music cd and it won't show in Dolphin or in other OS windows. I am using F10KDE.
View 3 Replies View RelatedInstalled Ubuntu 10.10 this morning from CD, downloaded all the latest updates. But when I put a CD or DVD in the drive, I can't access any of the data. Disk utility recognises that the drive is there, but it says "No medium detected".
Disk utility recognises it at /dev/sr0 so I added a line to fstab
/dev/sr0 /mnt/dvd udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec 0 0
but made no difference
Earlier tonight my computer froze when I was moving some folders on an external hard drive (ntfs) and I had to manually shut down. Now nautilus crashes whenever I try to access the drive, although if I open nautilus as root it works fine.

I've installed libfuse2 and ntfs-3g. Now when I reboot, the drive shows up in fdisk. In Gnome File system, the folder shows up in /media as /media/Storage. I didn't issue the mount command, it went there automatically. In terminal, I can access Storage and read/write to files on it. BUT, if I double-click the folder in Gnome, I get a brief glimpse of all the folders in Storage, then they disappear and the drive unmounts. The desktop icon goes away, and I can't see it when I issue sudo fdisk -l. I can get it back with a reboot. I've tried an entry in /etc/fstab, but that makes no difference. I didn't find anything specific to address this on this forum or after Googling.

Another thing is that after reading from the server's HDD, it seems to write on the desktop's SSD. It does this intermittently.I really want to know how can I stop this. It's very annoying and I bet I don't need it since, using previous versions of Debian, I could go well without this activity.

I'm thinking when I reinstalled Ubuntu, it made some screwy links between devices. But I have no idea how to resolve this... and there's no point in my mind to adding the DVD-RW to /etc/fstab until I can actually mount it manually to know it mounts successfully. Back when I installed Ubuntu 9.x on this machine, I never had any of these issues. It picked up the DVD-RW automatically, appended it to fstab during installation, and done. But 10.10 seems to be having some troubles my 9.x installation didn't.
The final step to making 10.4.2 perfect for my use is to get it to recognize there is CDRW & DVDRW hardware on my computer. I have read the excellent articles on the topic and plugged-in all their recommended goodies but I must be missing something that's simple and obvious to everyone but me because when I try to play something in either drive the closest I can come is for the player (Movie Player, ie) to affirm that I have a floppy drive.
Can I use software leftover software that worked with Win XP (Nero, Power DVD) or do I need something specifically for this OS?
I just built a server, which displays 8 cores in the i7 processor. However, because of the 2 threads per core, it shows up as an 8 core system. When viewing htop, it shows system loads at 0.29,0.18, and 0.13 for respective averaging times. How would I calculate actual system load for this processor? Would I divide the average by 4 or 8? Or, is there another method?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have 2 Ubuntu machines up & running on a small network. Both are running SAMBA servers. One several years old & has a rather old version of Ubuntu. The other, quite new & has a version about 9 months old.The newest has a problem. When working with large & complex Word documents, it will periodically generate an an error on the work station.
"Word failed reading from this fille (xxx specifies file we are working on). Please restore the network connection or replace the floppy disk drive". The it crashes Word & unsaved work is lost.The error never occurs when using the old server, only the new.
I have no hard drives in my computer, so I have been trying to boot Ubuntu 11.04 from an 8GB usb flash drive. Is this possible? So far the best result i have gotten is it will sit on the loading screen for a while then dump. I was only able to get the last little bit which reads mount. mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory. mounting /sys on /root/sys filed: no such file or directory. mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or dirctory. target file system doesn't have requested /sbin/init

Now the problem; when I check the capacity in the file browser on my mounted data drive, I only see 5,1 Tb of total space.
I just downloaded the Fedora11 LiveCD and booted it......it boots, but when it starts to load KDE, it takes a very long time, and it never ends. It just keeps on reading from the CD-ROM drive. I can see the GUI is loading, but the loading time is so long that the mouse sometimes freezes. My Config is 512MB of RAM and 2 IDE Hard Disks. Also note that I verified the image with SHA256, and even burnt the CD at two different speeds, one at 48X and the other at 16X. Still nothing. There has also been severe kernel panics on EXT4.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI need to read some data from a hdd that belongs to an old SCO Unix system. The SCSI card is PCI so I unplugged it from the old SCO unix box and stuck it in a new computer and booted using a Fedora 14 USB pen drive. The SCSI card was recognized and so was the hdd but it was not mounted. I then went into Applications, Disk Utility, and found the hdd. Under 'Edit Partition' the type was blank. I was tempted to set it to 'Extended' but was not sure whether that could damage the data on the disk. Does anyone know whether I would be able to read this Hdd by setting the type to 'Extended'?

It shows up in the directory explorer thing as a disc and with the disc name, but it has a little / thing in the bottom corner of the icon, and when I try to access it, it gives me this long error on the bottom of the file area (can't remember what all it said, something about 'harvey' and being unable to find the directory in /etc/fstab). The same thing happened with an external drive, which seemed to work fine before but now has the same problem.
