Ubuntu Servers :: Multiple Entries In Htop?

Aug 29, 2010

Running 9.04 Xubuntu desktop as server and development environment. I turn off gdm once booted up. When sshing in for other computer I ran htop, and found the following multiple processes:

[Code]....

Is there any good reason why I have multiples of these, or conversely is there a problem by having them? Everything works OK. Apache is only serving up my web development pages which I work on now and then, so its not having to handle external traffic. The server is port forwarded on port 80 through the router.

Ubuntu Servers :: Reading Htop System Loads With The I7?

Jul 7, 2010

I just built a server, which displays 8 cores in the i7 processor. However, because of the 2 threads per core, it shows up as an 8 core system. When viewing htop, it shows system loads at 0.29,0.18, and 0.13 for respective averaging times. How would I calculate actual system load for this processor? Would I divide the average by 4 or 8? Or, is there another method?

Ubuntu :: Multiple Entries On GNU GRUB?

Aug 2, 2010

I'll get directly to the point, I've installed Ubuntu, Linux on the same partition as Windows 7. Everything works just as it should be, no problems and I'm actually enjoying Ubuntu. It's a nice and clean OS.

Now, I'm having trouble with the GRUB, since I have updated Ubuntu a few times. It's not a large problem, but I don't like it around.

I attached a picture of my GRUB, it may take too many words to describe what's going on, so see for yourself.

Ubuntu :: Multiple Entries In Menu After Upgrade

Sep 19, 2010

I know someone posted a sim. query back in 2008, but I'm know getting the same issue in Lucid. I installed the latest updates last night and when I rebooted I found I had what looks like multiple copies of the same kernel entry in the Menu.lst. I've included my file for review. Sorting this out. Otherwise I reckon Lucid is rock solid. I do tend to leave a lot of default entries in commented out. Will this make my boot slower at all?

Ubuntu :: Multiple Keyring Password Entries?

Apr 27, 2011

Although all the passwords are under one Keyring folder, I have to type in the password 4 times. Is this the way the keyring is supposed to work? If so, can I help change this somehow(I'm not a programmer, unfortunately)? It seems that a lot of people have this problem and getting it to work out-of-the-box could bring in more potential users. (Also, different topic, is there anyway to make Dropbox wait until I enter keyring passwords to try to connect or wait until a connection is made to try to connect?

Ubuntu :: Service Menu (Right Click In Dolphin) Trashed With Multiple Entries

May 2, 2011

In Dolphin, when right clicking for context menu, my "Open with" list is trashed with multiple entries, that also contain old applications that I no longer have (or even had?). Just for example: for pdfs I have 3 Acrobat Readers, 2 FoxitReaders, 2 okulars, 2 GIMPs (?) etc. Same for other file types. How to clean it? I absolutely don't mind wiping it completely, so that it all goes back to default values. Configuring it anew is much better than having this list bother me every time I use a right click. I'm on 10.10 now, upgraded from 10.04. I've been using my home folder for like ever, without cleaning it, which is probably the source of the issue.

General :: Multiple Servers Or One Server With Multiple VMWare?

Feb 7, 2011

I'm looking at setting up a couple automated systems: Here are a few examples:

* Internal accounting system to download and process emails
* Public web server to visit

I could put each system on its own separate box -- for example, it's generally good practice to separate anything that external users have access to (such as a webserver) from internal processes such as accounting. Now, rather than dishing out the money for two separate servers, could I get away with just installing new instances of VMWare on the same box for each system?

To give you an idea, these are not large scale computationally sensitive systems. The accounting one is simply downloading and tallying emails, and the latter is just a webserver with maybe 5 hits per day on a good day. I could definitely pick up a new box for say $50, but I wanted to know the general practice of using VMWare on the same box versus two separate boxes.

Ubuntu Servers :: Windows DHCP Server - Multiple Boot Servers ?

Apr 1, 2011

I'm curious if anybody can shed some light for me in this department. We're in a large environment with a Windows DHCP Server. We have been tinkering with LTSP on Edubuntu as thin and fat clients. It works great, but right now we just have 1 server handling the lab, which works fine unless we want to expand, which may be very possible.

These are the instructions I received:
Login to your windows server and load the DHCP configuration screen
Create a DHCP reservation for the MAC address you obtained
Add the configuration options below to enable the machine to boot from the LTSP server
017 Root Path: /opt/ltsp/i386
066 Boot Server Host Name: <ip address>
067 Bootfile Name: ltsp/arch/pxelinux.0 # Specify CPU architecture in place of 'arch', for instance 'i386'

From: [url]

I'm curious, what if I want to have multiple Ubuntu servers on the network that I want to have bootable? For example, let's say I have 3 labs, and 3 servers. Server A to Lab A, Server B to Lab B, and Server C to Lab C. I want all C's computers to boot to C, and B to B, A to A, etc.

1 - How would I add multiple entries on the Windows DHCP Server to allow all 3 (A B C) servers to boot?

2 - How would I be able to isolate the clients so ONLY Lab A clients boot to Server A, etc?

Ubuntu Servers :: Backup Multiple Servers ?

Jan 19, 2010

I currently have a group of 3 servers connected to a local network. One is a web server, one is a mysql server, the other used for a specific function on my site (calculation of soccer matches!).

Anyway, I have been working on the site a lot lately but it is tedious connecting my USB hard drive to each computer and copying the files. This means I am not backing up as often as I should...

I have a laptop connected to this same network that I use for development so I can SSH into to the computers, is there any software for ubuntu that can take backups of files that I choose on multiple computers? I know I could rsync but is there something with more or an GUI?

Then I can just every 2 days move the most recent backup from my laptop to the USB drive. Then I will have the backup stored in 2 places if things go kaboom somewhere.

Ubuntu Servers :: Multiple FTP Servers On One Machine?

May 20, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu Server 10.04 and have a secure (SSL/TLS) FTP server on it. However, I'd like to use this FTP server to update programs I made using Microsoft Visual Studio. Unfortunately, in Microsoft's infinite wisdom, secure FTP servers cannot be used. Rather than use an insecure FTP server, I want to set up my secure FTP server to be able to access whatever I need to on the machine, and then add an insecure FTP server that only has access to the directory where I put my update files. I am currently using vsftpd as my FTP server. Is there any way that I can set up two FTP servers on this single machine?

Can anyone explain to me why there are sometimes 10 or 15 processes with the same title and "stats" listed in htop? I'm guessing there are multiple threads running - but that many of them obviously couldn't be running concurrently.

General :: Htop - Find The PID Thats Causing The High CPU Cycles?

Dec 29, 2010

Just trying to figure out some stuff with a broken process. A java app seems to sometime get stuck on a loop or something and i'm trying to find out what's causing it using just the following #sysadmin tools at my disposal.

Things like:- htop - find the PID thats causing the High CPU cycles. I'd then want to use /proc/[PID] or lsof -p [PID] or strace [PID] etc. But the PID doesn't exist in 'ps -ef' output so I think htop must be showing me kernel level thread PIDs?

Not sure about the PID's HTOP is actually giving me? I know that some of them are the real PID's that can be accessed through /proc/[pid] etc but others are not but are i assume child processes or more likely threads as child processes are normally shown in a default ps output anyway.

Is someone able to help distinguish to me about what exactly all these other PID's are that I can't manipulate or find apart from when using HTOP.
