I have installed Ubuntu KK server, and when I turn on my machine without monitor, after 5-7 min - system stop and not responding on all my requests (network, keyboard.). With enabled monitor all work good.
View 1 RepliesI installed Ubuntu 9.10 in an HP 6735s and can�t get wireless to work, it seems that the wireless button is not working cause it is in orange color ( disabled ) and when I press it it doesn�t change into blue ( enabled ) . There is a version of windows on other partition and wireless works and the button enables/disables
I tried the bios option of "load default values" that should enable the button by default but it does not work...

I've recently installed a second monitor and it's great having all that extra space.
However, Ubuntu 'loses' the new monitor after a restart and I have to go into System>Preferences>Display and get the second monitor re-enabled and put to the left of my existing monitor. Quick flicker and the second monitor is on.
I don't really want to have to do this every day so am I missing something so my second monitor is remembered?
I am having a problem with the nouveau driver in Fedora 15 Code: lspci | grep VGA 40:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV41GL [Quadro FX 1400] (rev a2) The problem is that when I boot a Fedora 15 live Cd, either gnome or xfce, the monitors initially seem to work in that they display at the proper resolution, both as the CD boots and as X initially starts. I can see the background and the mouse cursor - it is "busy" ...
As the desktop finishes loading, however, my primary monitor becomes disabled. With gnome the screen goes black, with xfce it goes white. I can still see the mouse on my secondary monitor, but I can not seem to open any applications (such as a terminal) or change to a console (ctrl-alt-F1 or ctrl-alt-F2). I can boot into safe mode. Adding the boot option video=xxx sets the resolution on the console as it boots, but does not help running X.
I'm running a fresh 10.04 x86-64 on a thinkpad w500, using the default video driver. The monitor shuts off randomly, sometimes while I'm using it and requires me to trigger sleep mode and waking up to bring back the screen. When it shuts off, everything else seems to be running. (i.e. its not going to sleep) I've turned off screensaver, sleep, hibernation and installed the Caffeine util to no avail.

I recently decided to install Ubuntu and I went through all of the steps to set up a subversion server using svnserve. It all works except for one thing: it stops responding to remote computers after a while.I have the server on a 4 port wireless router/switch in my dorm room. I set up port forwarding so that the server receives all traic over the correct ports. The subversion server AND the default http server on Ubuntu work fine always as long as I access them from a computer connected to the switch in my room.The problem is that if I try to access it from anywhere else, it won't respond at all unless it has been accessed by a computer on the switch recently (something like 30-60 minutes). So to fix it I have to go back to my room and access it from a computer on the switch. Then it will work from anywhere for another 30-60 minutes.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed ubuntu as a learning tool. It was going fine until the next day after the install. This happened on two reinstall of ubuntu server 10.4. All was installed was lamp, squid, privoxy, tor, shorewall, and phpmyadmin. I have added 3 websites to the server.
Today, I noticed my internet stopped responding on my other pc which is linked to my server for internet access( privoxy). When I turned on the server, I noticed the screen was purging out random lines. I don't know what they mean, but it was a never ending series of lines filling the whole screen. To stop it, I ctrl+c. Some of these lines read usb, keyboard, mouse, etc. I am guessing the system went hay-wired.
When I reboot the machine, it did it again. This time I don't have the cmd prompt. I didn't know another other way to properly shutdown so I just cold reboot the machine. The next time it booted up, all seems normal like it always have been. My sites, internet is working.
I probably didn't provide enough info to diagnose this behavior. As mentioned before, it happened the first time I installed the server and it is happening again with the same applications installed.

I have a ubuntu 11.04 LAMP server at home.
Its runnign a few small sites on a drupal CMS.
This morning I found none of the sites were responding. The server itself sounded like it was thrashing the hard drive.
It wasnt responding to the FTP client or SSH connections. Web pages just sat there like they were loading very slowly but never actually loaded.
How can I find out what went wrong. I dont have a massive amount of experience with linux, particularly the server variant.
Its worried me a little that the drupal report shows several page not found errors like someone (a bot maybe) was trying to see what php setup files they could access.
i just installed frox ftp proxy for my server using apt-get install frox.after i installed it i did 'sudo /ietc/init.d/frox start" and got t this "starting frox:caching ftp proxy server: disabled"

I'm running Ubuntu Server 9.10 on a dual socket X5550 platform with hyperthreading disabled. There should be 8 cores available for running processes: dual-socket, quad-core. When I start 8 single-threaded, cpu-intensive processes running, top shows six processes running at 100% and two at 50% (presumably sharing the seventh core). No other processes are reported as having >1% cpu, and yet the 1-minute load average is listed as over 11.0?!
1) Why is it not running each process on its own core?
2) Why is the load average so much greater than 8?
3) Is there anything I can change in the configuration to fix this?
I am connecting servers using NFS4 the shared directories are on servers running Debian 4 while the one who read from them is Debian 5.0.3. The problem is one of these shared servers suddenly stop responding and you cannot list it from Debian 5 server, also df hang, and the web application that is using it does not respond to requests that use this shared directory since it is blocked. Then the load on the server start to increase until the server cannot respond (over 90). I have found many entries in the syslog that refer to this like:

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a number of computers on a LAN. There are 3 laptops and 1 desktop, all running windows. I also have a Ubuntu server in the garage which servers up files to all those on the LAN. The server is not visible outside of the LAN for security reasons. Now, I want to track all traffic from any computer in my house that is coming and going in and out from the inter-tubes. I do not want to add this as a service to my current server as (a) it is behind the LAN and (b) I don't want to mess with security issues with that server.
I think I could set up a computer (an extra) which is between the modem and the router with two ethernet cards which would be able to monitor all traffic coming and going. This computer would, obviously, be exposed to all potential attacks as it wouldn't be behind the router's firewall. I'm not sure exactly how that would like or what software to use.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an ubuntu server installed on an old computer (Its a Pentium 4) and it was running fine for a while but ever since I installed the JDK (x11-common was a dependency) the system starts fine but I'm unable to connect to it through ssh unless a monitor was plugged into the computer. I also am unable to ping it, meaning its no longer connected.
Also, if I leave it running for a while it the same thing happens (ping returns destination not found). Anyone knows how can I fix this?
I don't know if this is useful but the server is connected to a wireless network that uses a WPA2 key.

If I use shutdown -r now, shutdown -s now or shutdown -h now and then power it on again, it will display the GRUB boot menu without automatically booting.

The command line font is less than 1/8" high: something on the order of a large 4pt or small 5pt font. Made several attempts to locate the correct info using the man functions and searching the archives, but so far have not been unable to find the needed information. View 4 Replies View RelatedI've recently decided to make a foray into the world of servers without any knowledge or experience. Yesterday, I ordered a Dell t110. I understand this is a really low-end server but I think it will work for home use. I am on a budget and literally just ordered the box. No keyboard. No mouse. No monitor. Not even an additional hard drive! With the exception of SLIGHTLY upgrading the processor, the thing is basically stock.
My question is this: Can I control and operate this server with my laptop somehow? Will that allow me to install Ubuntu Server as well as perform systems administration tasks? Ultimately, I'd like to get a new flat screen for the living room and have that be the monitor, with a wireless keyboard and mouse. However, like I said... I'm on a budget. I don't think I can sell my wife on that one right away. So... in the meantime, I need a way to actually USE my server.
I just installed Ubuntu server on one of my computers, but when I boot up the screen goes blank and the monitor gives me an 'Out of Range' error. I understand that this means that the resolution settings are too large for the monitor, but I don't understand how to change them, since there is no GUI installed. Details:

Is there something which can act as a fully fledged proxy (exactly like squid) but which can also monitor data usage?
At the moment what I do is I log data usage of IP addresses (allocated by DHCP) by using IPFM. Obviously getting a new IP address from a DHCP server isn't hard and this could be abused.
So I was thinking if I require proxy authentication and log usage that way, there is no way for anyone to abuse the system.
Does anyone know of a proxy server capable of logging data usage?
I've got a headless server (32 bit 9.04/9.10, can't remember) that started refusing SSH and HTTP connections a few days ago, and I'm just getting around to hopefully fixing it. The problem is that I can't even connect to the darn thing. I've plugged in a mouse, keyboard, and monitor, but the monitor tells me that it has no signal. I know the monitor works with the computer, as I used the same one to set up the server.
Just for kicks, I even tried to put in a live CD, but that didn't help. Any ideas on how I can connect to this thing?

View 3 Replies View RelatedLast night I was able to set up my server so that I can just connect vnc. I even was able to be connected at the log on screen so I could select which user I wanted to log in at. For some reason today, I have to have the monitor plugged in all the until the logon screen comes up before vnc will connect. Once the logon screen is up, I then can connect via vnc & select which user I want to logon as. It's odd because it worked last nigh, but today - Nope nada, it doesn't work & I can't explain why. I did clean up - Removing some applications I don't need on my server. (I'm hoping that isn't the problem) It's odd as well because I don't have to be logged on as a user to connect via vnc, I just have to wait until the logon screen is available...Then I can unplugged the monitor & logon.
