Ubuntu Servers :: Dual Socket X5550 Platform With Hyperthreading Disabled - Bad Scheduling On Nehalem?

Feb 25, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu Server 9.10 on a dual socket X5550 platform with hyperthreading disabled. There should be 8 cores available for running processes: dual-socket, quad-core. When I start 8 single-threaded, cpu-intensive processes running, top shows six processes running at 100% and two at 50% (presumably sharing the seventh core). No other processes are reported as having >1% cpu, and yet the 1-minute load average is listed as over 11.0?!

1) Why is it not running each process on its own core?
2) Why is the load average so much greater than 8?
3) Is there anything I can change in the configuration to fix this?

CentOS 5 Hardware :: 5.4 - No Speed Step / Turbo With Intel Xeon X5550 (Nehalem)

Dec 15, 2009

I just installed a new HP DL360 with 32 GB of RAM and a Intel Xeon X5550 which supports speed stepping and turbo mode. I've enabled turbo in the BIOS, but cannot seem to get CentOS 5.4 to make use of either of these features. I've been googling for a solution for a while now, and tried various things, such as installing cpufreq. However, when I type cpufreq-info, I get this:

# cpufreq-info

Fedora Servers :: Is Good Platform For Dedicated Servers

Apr 20, 2011

Being on a low budget and I can't afford to buy Redhat would you recommend using Fedora for setting up dedicated servers? I know Fedora is known to be "bleeding edge" in technology, which concerns me with the stability of the server. Would you recommend a more stable Linux distro? I was also wondering if there is any way to know what these web hosting companies are using in their servers: [url]

Fedora :: Running A Dual Boot Windows 7 Home Premium And 12 System On An AMD Phenom Platform

May 31, 2010

I am/was(?) running a dual boot Windows 7 Home Premium and Fedora 12 system on an AMD Phenom platform.

I thought that I would try the KDE desktop and installed it with the command

yum groupinstall "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"

After tasting KDE for a while I decided that I far prefer Gnome.

I removed the KDE with

yum groupremove "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"

This appeared to work but I then found that whilst I can boot into Windows 7, I can no longer boot into Fedora 12.

I have tried booting the F12 DVD and going into to the Rescue function. I re-installed grub but still cannot boot into F12.

I have looked at grub.conf but can see nothing wrong.

Ubuntu :: CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor & Hyperthreading?

Sep 2, 2010

I recently installed 10.04 and really like it so far, however I was wondering if it is possible to scale all hypertheading cores at once, currently I am using an applet for each and have to use several clicks to get into the desired powerstate.

I have read that with dual cores you will not have the option to go into different powerstates because it scales all cores at once, however the logical cores that show up with hyperthreading allow each to have a different power state, and will show up as different states if I use cpufreq-info in the terminal, so it seems like it is allowing it.

Ubuntu Servers :: Setup A Tftp Server To Mount A New Kernel In A DaVinci Platform?

Mar 16, 2011

I am fairly new to ubuntu server, I want to setup a tftp server to mount a new kernel in a DaVinci platform. I was following the guide in this page [URL]..docs/linux_tftp, but accidentally I remove the xinetd.conf file. So I think that maybe removing and reinstalling xinetd the problem will be solved, but instead of that I can't completely remove xinetd and the follow message is print in the terminal

Removing xinetd ...
invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/xinetd not found.
dpkg: error processing xinetd (--remove):
subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 100
invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/xinetd not found.
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 100
Errors were encountered while processing:
xinetd
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

with that problem I can't start the service or stop it, I am blocked in the configuration of tftp server.

Some time ago I've opened a thread about ACPI - as it turned out - killing my server. You may read it here if interested. My question is how can I enable Hyperthreading support in my kernel without enabling any part of ACPI?(Boot flag acpi=ht causes the same issue as described in above thread, so enabling any part of ACPI in any manner is not desirable)My kernel:

Debian Configuration :: Intel Turbo Mode Not Kicking In On Nehalem Xeon?

Mar 9, 2010

I've got a dual Xeon 5570 (Nehalem) server. It clocks down properly, but never, under any circumstances that I've found, clocks up past its TSC. Even when running basically nothing but cat /dev/zero > /dev/null, nothing gets clocked higher than the TSC. Below is the turbostat output, which clearly knows what the hardware is actually capable of, but it never actually achieves it. I'm running Lenny, with backported kernel 2.6.30-bpo.2-amd64. I tried the 2.6.32 backport and there wasn't any difference. know where I should look next? BIOS settings? Do I need to change some kernel option and recompile?

# ./turbostat
Nehalem multiplier 22, TSC frequency 2933 MHz
Nehalem 4 cores active: 24 mult, max turbo frequency = 3200 MHz
Nehalem 3 cores active: 24 mult, max turbo frequency = 3200 MHz
Nehalem 2 cores active: 25 mult, max turbo frequency = 3333 MHz
Nehalem 1 core active: 25 mult, max turbo frequency = 3333 MHz
