Ubuntu Servers :: Installing To HDD From USB - Only Boot With The USB In?

Sep 14, 2010

I want to turn an old laptop (one that worked flawlessly with Ubuntu until the graphics card fried - it can still do VGA graphics though) into a server for files and perhaps, at some point, hosting my web site. I installed the latest 32-bit Ubuntu server edition from a USB drive, and the install went fine but I can't boot up my computer from the hard drive - I just get a blinking cursor, and no GRUB even if I hold shift while booting up.

If I boot from the USB, however, the installation works, even though I know that I installed it to the hard drive - once I have booted up, I can remove the USB drive and access everything on the hard drive and see that this is, indeed, where the server has been installed. I'm guessing that somehow, GRUB or something boot-related ended up on the USB drive, so that I can only boot the hard drive by telling the BIOS to boot from the USB, which then points everything towards the hdd. During the installation it asked me if I wanted to overwrite the master boot record, and I said yes (because the server will be the only OS on the computer) - do you think somehow this put the boot record on the USB drive?

I don't know that much about boot records, but since the server runs fine off the hard drive when I boot from the USB, I'm assuming the problem is boot related. Searched google and the forums for people with similar problems but couldn't find any. CD drive on my computer is broke so I can't install from a disc.

Ubuntu Servers :: Installing 10.10 Using Network Boot+TFTPD32?

Dec 10, 2010

I've come across TFTPD32 as an application to help install Ubuntu Server 10.10 on my 32-bit Gateway Solo 5300 so that I could use it as a test server. I am attempting this method since neither the cd drive or usb drive work properly (the usb only working after logging in). However, I currently have no OS after half installing Ubuntu and accidentally shutting it down after it deleted the hard drive's contents-BIG mistake. It currently only boots to a black screen and a flashing underscore in the top left corner.how to network boot because I have never done it before and I don't fully know what is involved. Below is some-things you might want to know about what I have in hand:

-Old Gateway Solo 5300 Laptop with no OS(32 bit, 256MB RAM, RJ-45 jack, 10 GB HDD)
-Acer Aspire 570Z with Windows Vista Premium 32-bit(3GB RAM, 120GB HDD + RJ-45 jack)
-STORED ON ACER ASPIRE=Ubuntu boot files, TFTPD32, Unetbootin.
-Blue Ethernet cable, Yellow crossover ethernet cable.
-Router and modem

In total, what are the steps to have Ubuntu Server 10.10 edition succesfully installed on the old Gateway.

Ubuntu Servers :: Windows DHCP Server - Multiple Boot Servers ?

Apr 1, 2011

I'm curious if anybody can shed some light for me in this department. We're in a large environment with a Windows DHCP Server. We have been tinkering with LTSP on Edubuntu as thin and fat clients. It works great, but right now we just have 1 server handling the lab, which works fine unless we want to expand, which may be very possible.

These are the instructions I received:
Login to your windows server and load the DHCP configuration screen
Create a DHCP reservation for the MAC address you obtained
Add the configuration options below to enable the machine to boot from the LTSP server
017 Root Path: /opt/ltsp/i386
066 Boot Server Host Name: <ip address>
067 Bootfile Name: ltsp/arch/pxelinux.0 # Specify CPU architecture in place of 'arch', for instance 'i386'

From: [url]

I'm curious, what if I want to have multiple Ubuntu servers on the network that I want to have bootable? For example, let's say I have 3 labs, and 3 servers. Server A to Lab A, Server B to Lab B, and Server C to Lab C. I want all C's computers to boot to C, and B to B, A to A, etc.

1 - How would I add multiple entries on the Windows DHCP Server to allow all 3 (A B C) servers to boot?

2 - How would I be able to isolate the clients so ONLY Lab A clients boot to Server A, etc?

Ubuntu Servers :: Stuck At Boot With Raid (non Boot) In Fstab = Useless?

Nov 1, 2010

Forgive the terseness. I'm frazzled with this issue, perhaps I should have asked earlier. Every weekend for the past 2 months has been an endless cycle of 'repair broken system' off the install disk.

Installed from Ubuntu server 10.04LTS x86_64, + xfce-desktop Here is uname -a Linux ournas 2.6.32-25-server #45-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 20:06:58 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux If I add my raid + lvm to the fstab file, the boot stalls, (no error it, just hangs waiting, forever). So that's a not very user friendly to start with.

I've tried the suggestions about UUID in fstab tried using LABEL instead, or even /dev/xxx. Every time it hangs. I've googled this endlessly and not found a solution. So don't ask why... since I seem to have tried every odd suggestion to fix this, I've lost track. There seems to be some consensus that whoever gave us plymouth laid an egg. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but did we need a better graphical boot if it breaks everything else?

Ubuntu Servers :: Installing 10.04 From USB Will Not Work

Jul 23, 2010

What is wrong with the Ubuntu installer? I am trying to install 10.04 Server from either a USB CD-ROM or a USB memory stick and no matter what I try (and I've tried every trick I've been able to find so far). I regularly install other OS's using these methods without any problems or workarounds required. Why is the Ubuntu installer so screwed up?

When I try to install from USB CDROM the installer boots, asks me all those keyboard questions, and dies at "Detect and mount CD-ROM". It askes me if I want to load CD-ROM drivers from removable media I've even tried various things such as using the command prompt to manually copy the iso to /root/ and mount the iso to install from... no dice.

So next I tried using the Universal USB Installer tool as outlined at http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download The USB stick is created and it will also boot up the installer as expected. This method stops at the same point as the USB CD-CDROM. Other than rip open the server and hack in an ide/sata CDROM drive (there's no room for one), what does one have to do to make this work?

There's no screen output and the server just hangs. There's a SAS1068 Raid Controller with two HD's attached to it. I've run Dell Hardware diagnostics and they all come back fine.

Ubuntu Servers :: Installing Mod_python With LAMP?

May 4, 2010

End of my first week after using ubuntu. I have setup LAMP for the purposes of my own coding education, place to run php and python scripts.

LAMP seems to be setup fine and working - I even got php5 working with it - however I am having a lot more trouble getting python to work in much the same manner.

I have downloaded the mod_python from [URL], unzipped it, tried to run ./configure and it said apxs was not installed.

After some reading it turns out I had to remove some apache-fork something and install apache-devfork (please forgive lack of exact names).

After doing this the ./configure on mod_python passed the "finding apxs" test but then said it can't find apache2 at /sbin/apache2 and again aborted the configure.

Ubuntu Servers :: Installing 10.04 On Proliant 3000?

Jun 26, 2010

I got my hands on my first real server hardware yesterday - a PIII 600 MHz COMPAQ Proliant 3000 with 1.8 GB RAM, Smart Array 3200 controller and 4x18.2GB SCSI ULTRA 3 hard drives. RAM is upgraded from original and USB card added - otherwise hardware arrangement appears to be original.

Minimal 10.04 installed (35 minutes boot to boot) as Server 10.04 could not detect CD drive. My problem? Everything works but it does not look right. Probably my bigger problem?? I know almost nothing about RAID and the more I read the more ethereal my understanding seems to become.

When installing, I chose to install with LVM on c0d0. Grub written to MBR. I have posted df -l, fdisk -l and lshw output below. Would someone tell me if this looks correct and, possibly, offer some pointers if it does not.

installing Ubuntu 10.04 on a HP Proliant DL180 G6, especially via the LO100 virtual KVM? I can boot almost any linux distro with it, but unfortunately whenever I boot the Ubuntu server cd the screen gets garbled. I did some searching on the net, and found some references to older versions of Ubuntu where one had to add vga=771 to the boot options, but this still doesn't work with 10.04. I tried several vga modes, all to no avail (with vga=normal the screen gets garbled, with anything else the screen just stays black). Anyone got any idea on how to fix this?

I do notice, however this is trying to hit ec2.archive. For iperf I don't know that it needs to be ec2 specific. To my knowledge this worked a few weeks ago. Also, where it is easy enough on a Desktop version of maverick to simply switch sources for the upgrades/updates I have not found how to specify a new url (i.e. Duke University vs. MIT) The repositories I am happy with just the location of the repositories. On this particular cloud image is it even safe to leave ec2 as it is a specialized stripped down image.
