I have been running a webserver for a time now. And for fun I thought I would use Nagios for monitoring it. But the installation instruction says install this on webserver01 and that on webserver02. I only have one server and want to monitor it remotely from a simple browser. Is this possible or does Nagios need at least two separate servers? Can't it just run it on my one server?
View 1 RepliesI want to monitor RDS (mysql database of EC2) using Nagios. In command line ( I am able to do it but I dont know how to feed it in nagios . On nagios server if I execute the following command , I am able to fetch the information of database (RDS)

Note :- Here the host name is public dns name (x.y.z.amazon.com) .We cant ping to this host.With mysql command , we can log in and work on databases.
The communication between nagios and nrpe agent in the monitored host, can be without SSL? The problem is that I have 2 different versions of debian running on the machines and there are problems related to the libssl-dev package!

Running CentOS 5 KDE as a DNS Resolving Caching Name Server, Centos.myname.local ... I run PeerBlock with iBlock List, the 2 main ones which blocks everything, I may have to config it to allow connections. How is Nagios to install and setup. I use it at work, in the NOC and really love this software. 5 computers and a lot of devices using reserved IP's.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a bunch of Windows servers and they all connect to 2 networks. One of them is all public IPs (an entire /24) which is protected by a pfsense firewall. The other network is just a 48 port gigabit switch that each machine accesses using a private (192.16 static IP on a separate nic. There is no gateway/DNS/DHCP server on this private network and we want to keep it that way.
I want to deploy a ubuntu server that will connect to both networks. This server will not sit behind our firewall. It will have a public IP address from our /24 and be connected to the switch that feeds our firewall and a second nic with a static private IP that will be connected to our private network. This server will need to run nagios, run a few command line items that grep log files and serve the output via apache, and act as a VPN to allow an outside machine secure access to the private network. Sitting on this private network are various web based GUIs for the switches, UPS boxes, etc that we do not want exposed directly to the Internet. Both of these networks are mission critical so I can't change any existing settings and I can't add anything to the existing firewall. There would only be a couple of VPN connections at a time.
Do you think that ubuntu 10.04 LTS server (32 bit) would be able to handle this? I am looking at running it on a supermicro Atom D525 box with 3G of ram and a small SSD for storage.
I switched on bandwidth monitoring on my Ubuntu Server via Webmin on interface eth1. Unfortunately this has filled my disk by writing huge syslog, debug and kernel.log files. How do I switch it off? I can't see a way of doing it in Webmin.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI didn't setup our old system but that server has since been retired due to hardware failure, but we have some new webervers, and a new postgtres database server in place which I need monitoring. Some items include database size, transactions per second, io stats, memory monitoring, or as the DBA put "anything I can get". We had used CACTI in the past for these items, but I didn't do the setup and sondering if that is what is recommended, or something else. I am looking at groundwork open source which include nagios, etc. but figured I would consult the uforums since all these servers are running userver 9.x and 10.x .

Another thing that I'm looking for is a way to monitor an ongoing session and record user activity, now I've seen ObserveIT, but it doesn't support Linux agents as of today.

I changed SELinux rules based on URL...I'm not getting any AVC Denials, so that's not the problem. Nagios and Apache both start fine. If I go to my local IP, I get the standard Apache test page. URl...(address from all the guides I read) doesn't resolve.I know that Nagios is at least running from "service nagios status," and I have gotten two alerts emailed to me: swap alert (I don't have swap configured) and disk space.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running ASSP on Ubuntu 10.04.1 it's mostly working fine. I have one problem which has been bugging me for some time. I don't want to filter outbound mail, but if I can relay (proxy) my outbound mail through ASSP, then it can automatically add to the whitelist.
As ASSP is a proxy, I need a server to send it to once ASSP receives it. I've tried my ISP, but this failed and they weren't willing to confirm if a connection attempt was received at their end.
Current setup
Inbound
mx -> router -> ASSP -> Exchange 2003
Outbound
Exchange 2003 -> mx
I'd like to setup outbound as either
Exchange 2003 -> ASSP -> <ISP> SMTP relay
Exchange 2003 -> ASSP -> <relay running on Ubuntu eg postfix>
Can anyone help me with troubleshooting steps or a better suggestion for how I can set this up. I'd love to know why my ISP setup didn't work, but I don't know a tool for monitoring IP traffic in Ubuntu SE, in windows I use Wireshark is there any equivalent I can setup for Ubuntu or a tool I can use in windows which will show all traffic, Ubuntu and windows server are on the same netgear switch, not sure it's smart enough to copy all traffic to another port for monitoring.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI've spent days trying to setup access properly from a public address to a monitoring server that works fine locally. Everything works from public access until I try to link to a CVS repository. The rancid CVS repository is set up as a separate server (virtualhost). It appears the referring link causes a DNS error (105: Server Not Found) when the CVS repository server is accessed from the public address. Things work fine when accessing via localhost.

So we monitor all of our disk space, but only get pages for critical. What we would like to do is have one email sent to our team every month with all the "Warnings" for our disk. I have been searching and haven't found a way to do this. Any suggestions?

I made some changes to apache (creating some new virtual sites) and since then Nagios gives me a warning message for HTTP with the message, HTTP WARNING: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found. The sites that I created are working perfectly. I noticed that the attemps are 4/4. Does this need to be reset or does Nagios automatically reset that once it detects the issue is resolved?
