May 9, 2010With 10.04 I can't stop SSH anymore by running "/etc/init.d/ssh stop". I get an "OK" after executing it but it doesn't actually do anything.

Software :: Full Screen Mode Makes Its Videos Stop / Sort It?
May 31, 2011I've this problem since I started to play videos through the internet. Whenever the videos is on full screen, it makes not only to stop the video but sometimes it becomes choppy. Also, when I try to play a video and another one is still buffering.. The video I attempt to play is still loading until I close the another that's buffering.
I'm frequently using Google Chrome.

Aug 8, 2011Seems like the latest Kernel (2.6.40-4.fc15.i686) update screwed with my setup a little bit.
This is what happened:
I had about 100 updates to my F15 pending in my taskbar's update notifier.
I let the system update itself.
Reboot and desktop effects don't work.
Takes a long time to open up Dolphin.
electricsheep (OpenGL screen saver) doesn't work.
I'm assuming it's a problem with OpenGL or my nvidia video drivers which I tried reinstalling from mjmwired's guide.
That didn't fix anything.
I'm looking for a point in the right direction or a way to revert back to my previous state before the system updated everything.
Ubuntu Servers :: Ltsp Fails In Tftp Under U9.10 / Sort It?
Feb 17, 2010In Jaunty (9.04) I've setup a small (eleven-terminal) ltsp network at the local school. It handled around 6600 working hours with ease.
Now I've upgrade the server to Karmic Koala (9.10) and it just stopped working.
1) The clients have PXE NICs
2) They get the proper IPs from the DHCP server and respond appropriately to changes in the DHCP configuration files.
3) DHCP server also points the clients to
filename=/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.0
4) When the clients try to download the pxelinux.0 over tftp they just timeout
5) /etc/inetd.conf has an entry like
tftp dgram udp wait root /usr/sbin/in.tftpd /usr/sbin/in.tftpd -s /var/lib/tftpboot
6) The file /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.0 exists on the server
I'm lost at all these configuration files and protocols.

Jun 30, 2010I'm trying to follow the OpenLDAP docs that are part of the Ubuntu 10.04 Server Guide, listed here:
I get about halfway through, to this command:
sudo ldapadd -x -D cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com -W -f frontend.example.com.ldif
When it asks me to "Enter LDAP Password:" and nothing I have tried works. I thought it might have been "olcRootPW: secret" set in the backend file in the step before, but that isn't working.
Ubuntu Servers :: DHCP3 Won't Start / Restart - Sort It?

here's my etc/network/interfaces file code...
Here's the problem -- DHCP wont start and throws the error "Can't create PID file /var/run/dhcpd.pid: Permission denied." Somewhere I found a post that indicated that the following corrected the issue (I dont really know why):
ln -s /var/run/dhcp3-server/dhcpd.pid /var/run/dhcpd.pid
dhcpd3 -cf /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf eth1
When I do the above DHCP will start (in theory, at least no erros are thrown). But if I ask DHCP to restart, it will stop, but not restart. And the error is "No subnet declaration for eth1 (192.168.3.2)"
I'm newbie-ish. Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Ubuntu Servers :: WD20EARS Can't Partition As Primary / Sort It Out?
May 4, 2011I am trying to build my second home file server after building an experimental x386 unit.
Gigabyte x64 Motherboard with 3core processor and 4GB RAM
10 1.5TB SATA HDD (Mostly WD15EARS and W15EADS)
2 2TB SATA2 HDD (WD20EARS)
I want to create a RAID 6 Array of the 10 1.5TB drives and (1.5 TB partitons of the 2 TB drives) the remaining 0.5TB of the 2 TB drives will be used for RAID 1 arrays (SWAP, root and usr)
When i partition the drives the 1.5 TB drives can be Primary or Logical. The 2 TB drives do not give me this option.
For the 2 TB drives:
- i can partition into 8GB Swap, 20 GB root, 474GB usr and 1.5TB RAID6.
- When i select (Physical partition for RAID) I CANNOT change the Bootable FLag to ON. It always stay OFF. If i use other file systems such as exf4 it can be changed to ON.
- when i continue with the installation it fails while installing GRUB.
Questions:
Why does my 2TB drive not allow me the choice of Primary or Logical?
Is the Bootable Flag = Off the reason GRUB will not install?
How can I achieve my goal of using the 2TB drives for RAID 1 and RAID 6
Servers :: Ubuntu Server Won't Boot After Updating / Sort It?
Jun 29, 2011I'm planning on having a play with Ubuntu server. I'm running it on VMWare 7.
I installed Ubuntu server, after that i proceeded to update it.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo reboot
After the reboot it just boots into a black screen with a blinking cursor.
I can boot into recovery mode if i hold down shift and i tried to follow these instructions for repairing GRUB.

Jul 5, 2011I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit Server Edition here. I'm running Apache as a web server. I just found that Apache is not logging to access.log and error.log anymore.
But the service is running well. Log parameter at /etc/apache2/apache2.conf seems to be OK. Here's the line :
ErrorLog /var/log/apache2/error.log
LogLevel warn
CustomLog /var/log/apache2/other_vhosts_access.log vhost_combined
I already tried restart the server, but no luck. Is there any place should I check?
Fedora Servers :: Unable To Authenticate Through AFP From My MAC / Sort It?
Jun 15, 2009I installed netatalk for Linux in Fedora 10. I managed to get the service starting correctly at every boot and from Linux side everything looks good. I even manged to tweak avahi-daemon to advertise my server on the network so would show in Finder sidebar (with a snazy tux icon). But when I try to connect to the server it asks me for username and password (as it should), but my password doesn't work. I changed my password, I even gave it a simple one to rule out possibility of "fat-finger"-ing. No success.
I tried many options in my afpd.conf file. Here is the latest code...

Mar 13, 2011I'm just getting started with postfix for the first time (using courier pop) and everything is working well. However I can't seem to figure out how to only allow some system users to have mailboxes?
For example I have a few accounts which are FTP only accounts but they still have mailboxes under postfix? Is there any way to tell postfix the accounts that I actually want mailboxes for?
Also on a side note, I notice that mail seems to be stored under the user's home directory. I'm scared they may accidentally delete them.

Jul 14, 2010I just installed ubuntu as a learning tool. It was going fine until the next day after the install. This happened on two reinstall of ubuntu server 10.4. All was installed was lamp, squid, privoxy, tor, shorewall, and phpmyadmin. I have added 3 websites to the server.
Today, I noticed my internet stopped responding on my other pc which is linked to my server for internet access( privoxy). When I turned on the server, I noticed the screen was purging out random lines. I don't know what they mean, but it was a never ending series of lines filling the whole screen. To stop it, I ctrl+c. Some of these lines read usb, keyboard, mouse, etc. I am guessing the system went hay-wired.
When I reboot the machine, it did it again. This time I don't have the cmd prompt. I didn't know another other way to properly shutdown so I just cold reboot the machine. The next time it booted up, all seems normal like it always have been. My sites, internet is working.
I probably didn't provide enough info to diagnose this behavior. As mentioned before, it happened the first time I installed the server and it is happening again with the same applications installed.
Edited: It happened again. Some of the lines I could make out are these.

Sep 27, 2010I've just installed subversion.I need to create a script /etc/init.d/svnserve that will start at boot time.I want to use start-stop-daemon --start so I can track my process and eventually kill it using start-stop-daemon --stop.My problem is that I can't get it to work and the documentation shows no exemple.
I've replaced $DAEMON by the whole line: svnserve -d -R -r $REPO_ROOT and got -d is not an option.I'm not quite sure what to do at that point. If someone has some experience with start-stop-daemon it would be great.

Dec 16, 2010how do I tell grub to stop trying to boot based on UUIDs? I've been dealing with this for about two years now. I have this one system, a PowerEdge 1550, that for some reason WILL NOT boot using a UUID, and will only boot if I edit the first entry in grub, remove everything to do with UUIDs (completely delete the search line, replace root=uuid=[uuid] with root=/dev/sda1). I can't seem to make these settings stick and now with 10.10 there's no longer a menu.lst to edit. So, in short, I need grub to stop trying to boot based on a UUID. Absolute paths, baby. That's what I need.

Nov 3, 2009I have a start and stop script registered with chkconfig for a fuse mounted drive. I can /sbin/service scriptname start
and
/sbin/service scriptname stop
with no issues.
The stop script unmounts the drives and then stops the service with a function to wait until the pidof service is gone. My drives are showing up as dirty on reboot, which should mean that my script that functions normally in cli, is running out of time and possible being ignored by service after a certain wait period when shutdown -h now is issued. System is a remote server so I can not view the output during shutdown. How can I increase the wait before /sbin/service issues a [FAILED] if that is the case on shutdown? The startup script runs, however the shutdown script does not...the script does work though with the service scriptname stop command.

May 4, 2010We switched from unix to linux and we have an old report that extracted data from a database, output to an ascii file and then sorted the results in the file based on different arguments. The report now blows up when it runs,and I can only guess it is because the options for sort on linux differ slightly from unix.For example, here is one of the commands issued from within the report app that ran on the old unix box:
if sort-sequence = "descending" then
'sort -t~" -f +3.0f -4.0 +5.0r -6.0 -f '
else
'sort -t~" +3.0f -4.0 +1.0f -2.0 -f'
I will eventually rewrite the report to store the data in a local table, but I can simply adjust the options to suit the requirments of linux. Basically, I need to know if this can be a quick fix for the short term.
