Ubuntu Servers :: Stop Openssh From - Ever - Running At Start Up?

Jun 12, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and I have installed openssh.I need to find a way to configure it so that it never start up when I boot into my computer. The reason is: I haven't had the time yet to learn how to set it up and configure it correctly. Until that time comes I don't want it to run at all.Every single time I boot into the system and I have to do that first before I can even do what I really need to on the computer. It's annoying.Does anyone know the best and least complicated way to just make it not run at all until I'm ready to set it up properly? Also how to check what is running on my system after I boot up so I can double check, after making the changes, that it worked right.

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Use Start-stop-daemon To Execute Process

Sep 27, 2010

I've just installed subversion.I need to create a script /etc/init.d/svnserve that will start at boot time.I want to use start-stop-daemon --start so I can track my process and eventually kill it using start-stop-daemon --stop.My problem is that I can't get it to work and the documentation shows no exemple.

I've replaced $DAEMON by the whole line: svnserve -d -R -r $REPO_ROOT and got -d is not an option.I'm not quite sure what to do at that point. If someone has some experience with start-stop-daemon it would be great.

Ubuntu Servers :: Configure Openssh Ftp - Upload To Web Directory

Jul 27, 2010

I would like to upload files via ftp or sftp to my web directory at /var/www/...

Originally I had installed openssh-server (through apt-get, before learning about tasksel). I assumed this only had ssh support and not ftp, so after a quick search, I installed vsftpd. I would like to learn how to configure openssh, and I mention vsftpd in case there is a conflict.

Right now I am able to log in to my server box through ssh/ftp, but I can only modify my home directory. I created a directory: /var/www/andrew and set permissions to drwxr-xr-x. I am unable to upload files to this folder.

What do I have to do to resolve this, and is there anything else I should know about my situation?

Ubuntu Servers :: OpenSSH Reverse Lookup Using /etc/hosts Before Nameserver?

Apr 6, 2010

Like many others I'm running into some reverse lookup issues with SSH. Setup is as follows:

localnet setup
myserver - 192.168.0.x
myworkstation - 192.168.0.y

[Code].....

nslookup tests show that my reverse lookup is functioning correctly. However, if I use "myworkstation" to connect to myserver.mydomain.com using an external nameserver SSH says: "Address 84.162.xx.yy maps to myserver.mydomain.com, but this does not map back to the address - POSSIBLE BREAK-IN ATTEMPT!"

On myserver the /etc/hosts has the internal address for the server which seems the normal way to go to me. Changing this to the servers external address solves the issue.

Apparently a connection originating from myworkstation arrives from/with my external address, and when its reverse is checked by the server it apparently finds its own internal address for that name in /etc/hosts before doing a nameserver query and thus concludes that internaladdress <> externaladdress which gives the error.

Is there any way to have the server check external DNS before /etc/hosts? Another solution would probably be running an internal DNS, so myworkstation doesn't connect through the 'outside'.

Ubuntu Servers :: SFTP Setup Using OpenSSH - Network Error?

Jul 6, 2011

I'm new around here and pretty new to ubuntu and linux in general. I am setting Up an sftp server. I set it up using openssh and it worked fine for a few months. Then recently we experienced a power outage. Now the server will boot fine, all users can login locally, but when they try to login remotely they enter their user info and then are denied with some generic network error. Again, being a noob at this I tried to trouble shoot this a little bit but I'm not quite sure what to look for. I believe the ssh service is running but I don't know what else to look for.

Is there a utility to stop unnecessary processes from running in Ubuntu 10.10? I used rcconf but there did not seem to be a whole lot of startup processes that were enabled. Yet somehow I am running 260 processes now.

Even if I log into fluxbox, I get 200+ processes running.

Networking :: How To Stop / Start Network In Ubuntu 10.04

Jul 18, 2010

This should not be this difficult. I have a plain install of Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit with a wired network card. It picks up a private IP address from my router. It has an app called NetworkManager Applet 0.8 in the notification area of the panel. If I right click on this app and select "Disconnect" it does. ifconfig shows that the IP address is gone. I can then right click on the app again and "Auto eht0 and I am connected again and ifconfig shows the IP address restored. So far, so good. I was testing a crossover cable to see how fast I could transfer files to/from my server - both machines have gigabit cards but my switch is only 100 Mb.

I unplugged the PC from the router, hooked up the crossover cable to the server and found that I had no connectivity - the IP address was gone. Not wanting to mess with hard configuring IP addresses for the moment I connected the PC back to the router. When I unplugged the cable the app showed the networking disconnected icon. I tried right clicking on the app and unchecking [ ] Enable Networking then rechecking it. This works on my netbook running Ubuntu 9.04. No luck on 10.04 (and I had not tried the Auto eht0 as described above - did not discover that until later). So then I tried to fix it from the command line.

ken@taylor12:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking start
Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8)
utility, e.g. service networking start

Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an Upstart job, you may also use the start(8) utility, e.g.
start networking
networking stop/waiting.

So I then tried
ken@taylor12:~$ sudo service networking start
networking stop/waiting
but still no connectivity. A reboot got things back in order.

Then I did a little more testing.
ken@taylor12:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking stop
* Deconfiguring network interfaces...
Ignoring unknown interface eth0=eth0.
and I am still connected.

Editing Connections within the NetworkManager Applet shows "Auto eth0 - last used never" even though I have used it. [Edit] Auto eth0 via the app appears to show information about my wired NIC.

ifconfig shows eht0 as active
ken@taylor12:~$ ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:25:64:e8:18:2c

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Upgrade - MySQL 5.1 Does Not Want To Start Or Stop

Apr 30, 2010

I upgraded from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. 32 bit. The install had not finished as it barked at tripwire config. I have had to stop it and continue from command prompt. More or less the install went OK. After the install, mysql 5.1 does not want to start or stop. Commands
/etc/init.d/mysql stop ( or 'stop mysql' , or service mysql stop' )
/etc/init.d/mysql start

Do not finish - do not return to command prompt. No log messages insyslog or mysql logs. Say, I do 'service mysql start', the command does not return, I click Ctrl+C, then repeat the command. This displays :
'start: Job is already running: mysql'.
Of course mysql is not running. I've tried to remove and reinstall the packages. No result. There is 'stop mysql' command in one of install scripts that hangs.
