Ubuntu Servers :: Stop Tftpd From Starting Up?
Dec 8, 2010
What is the proper way to stop tftpd from starting up? There is no numbered rc script symlink for it so I can't use update-rc.d. I don't want to just hack a file unless that is considered "the way".

Anyone know how to stop the pureftpd starting up automatically? I've tried the usual in /etc/init.d/pureftpd but it still starts and I need to log in and close it in the admin UI or in terminal.

I would like to stop network manager from starting up on boot. I have tried moving
Code:
/etc/init.d/network-manager stop
to rc.local and it did nothing but boot me into the CLI
I have also tried to put
Code:
sudo service network-manager stop and that did nothing also.
After I get network manager to stop on boot up. How do I make it so it will not auto connect to networks? My computer keeps on joining a different network on boot up. And I don't like this as some times I go to my banks website and I am on there network with out realizing it (because of the auto connect) Is there a way to stop this also?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10. I recently installed the open ssh server so that can sftp stuff. However, I do not want the server to always be on, only when I manually start So, I did an 'update-rc.d -f ssh remove'and now I don't see any startup scripts in the rcx.d directories any more. However, when I do a 'ps ax', there is always a '/usr/sbin/sshd' process running. I try to kill it but it keeps restarting under a different process ID.How do I disable sshd?

I have a problem with TFTP files greater than 32MB with Ubuntu. I haven't been able to find a fix for this issue. This has been a known issue for years and was corrected in the winodws world(AUGH !). when I did an apt-get install this morning it said my tftp was up to date.

Having a problem with tftpd on CentOS 5.5. I am only able to download files from the localhost address.
I have checked iptables (by adding rules and by turning the firewall completely off -- nothing changes) and enabled tftpd logging (by adding -v to the server_args section in xinetd.d/tftp) and I DO see the request coming in, but no response from the daemon. I've also tried upping the verbosity by adding multiple -vs and/or --verbosity 10 to the mix, but all I ever see is the initial request come in, nothing more. I've even tried running the daemon in foreground mode with -L but I get no verbosity then.

I am learning Linux and especially the scripting and server administration aspect. I recently installed TFTPD on a Debian Lenny box and was satisfied with the results. The only drawback that I could find was that a file had to exist before TFTPD would allow a transfer. I understand that this is standard practice however I was wondering if there was a way around this. I am using this TFTP server to backup configurations and IOS images on our Cisco devices in a private network. If there isn't anyway to do this is there a different TFTP server that I could install that would support this functionality. I have read the man pages without much luck and doing Google searches hasn't yielded many results. I really appreciate your help and if there is anything you need from me please let me know./etc/inetd.conf fileQuote:
#:BOOT: TFTP service is provided primarily for booting. Most sites
# run this only on machines acting as "boot servers."
tftp dgram udp wait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/in.tftpd -s
[code]...

I have set up a new IP specifically for SSH and configured SSHD_Config accordingly to listen on this new interface and a specific port. However when I reboot SSH is not starting. Looking in the syslog it shows that it is unable to start. It looks like its trying to listen on the interface before it is set up.
Code:
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process (601) terminated with status 255
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process ended, respawning
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process (610) terminated with status 255
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process ended, respawning
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process (618) terminated with status 255
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh respawning too fast, stopped
I am able to start SSH manually once the server is booted. Do I need to set up my interfaces differently to ensure they are available prior to SSH starting somehow? I don't want to change my ssh config to listen on all addresses.

My mysql server won't start on my machine. It simply fails with no errors.
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/mysql restart
* Stopping MySQL database server mysqld [ OK ]
* Starting MySQL database server mysqld [fail]
When I run cat /var/log/mysql.err the file is empty, thinking this might be a permissions issue
I tried chowning to a mysql user. Here's the current permissions.
Code:
ls -alh /var/log/mysql*
-rw-r----- 1 mysql adm 0 2009-09-30 11:08 /var/log/mysql.err

I am having problems with bond0 starting at boot on ubuntu server 9.10. After I do a restart I have to manually start the network with "ifup bond0". I have installed the built package (ifenslave-2.6_1.1.0-15ubuntu1_i386.deb (as indicated in Bug #482419)).
I have setup bonding for mode=6 with miimon=100 using eth0 and eth1 (both are Intel 10/100/1000 ports using an aic79xx network driver).
The contents of the aliases file are:
alias bond0 bonding
options bond-mode=6 miimon=100
The contents of the interfaces file are:
auto bond0
iface bond0 inet static
address 192.168.15.60
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.15.1
