Ubuntu Servers :: Apache Not Logging Anymore / Sort It?

Jul 5, 2011

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit Server Edition here. I'm running Apache as a web server. I just found that Apache is not logging to access.log and error.log anymore.

But the service is running well. Log parameter at /etc/apache2/apache2.conf seems to be OK. Here's the line :

ErrorLog /var/log/apache2/error.log
LogLevel warn
CustomLog /var/log/apache2/other_vhosts_access.log vhost_combined

I already tried restart the server, but no luck. Is there any place should I check?

Server :: Apache Logging Client Hostnames Instead Of IPs ?

Mar 12, 2011

Setup a new machine with Apache, identical setup to all the other machines I got, yet this one is logging hostnames instead of IPs.

"HostnameLookups" are "Off" and LogFormat settings are identical to all the other machines:

Code:

Added a new LogFormat directive:

Code:

And told the virtual hosts to use it:

Code:

This solved the problem, though I'm at a loss as to why I've got this behavior on just this one box and none of the others. OS is Debian Lenny, same version of Apache installed via Debian package.

My understanding from Apache doc [url] is that when "HostnameLookups" are "Off, "%h" will yield IP instead of hostname..

Code:

It features support for HTTPS, virtual hosting, CGI, SSI, IPv6, easy scripting and database integration, request/response filtering, many flexible authentication schemes, and more. Homepage: [url]

Ubuntu Servers :: Syslogng Installation For Centralized Logging

Jan 29, 2010

I need to centralize the logging of several machine on one machine with syslog-ng.I'm currently using fail2ban for security enhancement and logwatch for log reports, which are based on file log on each machine. is it possible to keep local logging for fail2ban and logwatch (logwatch can be dropped, but not fail2ban). One other need is to move old logs to a ftp site for archiving, as in france we have to keep one year of logs.

Another thing I've seen, is that logging goes to a MySQL database instead of the filesystem which allow to have some nice feature as web frontend, search capabilities.how is it compatible with the ftp save?

Ubuntu Servers :: Server For Internet Logging And Filtering

Jun 16, 2010

I'm in charge of a church computer lab which is open to children ages 6 to 16 for about 3 hours a week. We try to have adult supervision but don't have 100% coverage.

The lab has a maximum of 8 computers, a mixture of MACs, Windows XP, and Linux machines, depending on their state of repair.

The church's current internet connection is Verizon residential speed DSL to a 4 port wired plus wireless router in a locked office which also houses our Windows XP office computer and is adjacent to our locked pastor's office.

Internet access for the lab is by a single CAT5 cable passing through a small hole in a wall to a network switch on the other side. All of the lab computers are connected to the switch by CAT5 cable.

I would like to add a server in the locked office to log internet usage and block access to certain websites as needed. I think logging internet activity will be a good antidote in case one of the older ones wants to try to get sneaky and cover their tracks.

I envision building a computer from donated parts, including 2 NICs.

I have never done things from the server end, but think the server edition of Ubuntu would be a good starting point.

My goal is to be able to manage internet access with an easy to use GUI system so I could teach the basics to a couple of youth leaders to use it when I'm not there.

Ubuntu Servers :: Firestarter And Webmin Bandwidth Monitor Not Logging Anything When FS Is Active

Jan 7, 2010

I'm installing a server to act as a firewall between a local network and internet. I've installed Firestarter becaused it worked straitgh away (it seems that FS is configuring the routing as well). I've tried to remove it, and then I lost the access from LAN to Internet. (I don't know why -perhaps the routing is disabled then- , so I prefer to keep it).

The problem is that Webmin Bandwidth Monitor (bandwidthd) is not logging anything when FS is active. Does someone has an idea on how I could make it work? I've tried cacti and some other stuff, but it is far too complicated for me.

Ubuntu Servers :: Ltsp Fails In Tftp Under U9.10 / Sort It?

Feb 17, 2010

In Jaunty (9.04) I've setup a small (eleven-terminal) ltsp network at the local school. It handled around 6600 working hours with ease.
Now I've upgrade the server to Karmic Koala (9.10) and it just stopped working.
1) The clients have PXE NICs
2) They get the proper IPs from the DHCP server and respond appropriately to changes in the DHCP configuration files.
3) DHCP server also points the clients to
filename=/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.0
4) When the clients try to download the pxelinux.0 over tftp they just timeout
5) /etc/inetd.conf has an entry like
tftp dgram udp wait root /usr/sbin/in.tftpd /usr/sbin/in.tftpd -s /var/lib/tftpboot
6) The file /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.0 exists on the server

I'm lost at all these configuration files and protocols.

Ubuntu Servers :: DHCP3 Won't Start / Restart - Sort It?

Feb 7, 2011

Ubuntu 10.10 w/ dual NICs

here's my etc/network/interfaces file code...

Here's the problem -- DHCP wont start and throws the error "Can't create PID file /var/run/dhcpd.pid: Permission denied." Somewhere I found a post that indicated that the following corrected the issue (I dont really know why):

ln -s /var/run/dhcp3-server/dhcpd.pid /var/run/dhcpd.pid
dhcpd3 -cf /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf eth1

When I do the above DHCP will start (in theory, at least no erros are thrown). But if I ask DHCP to restart, it will stop, but not restart. And the error is "No subnet declaration for eth1 (192.168.3.2)"

I'm newbie-ish. Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Ubuntu Servers :: WD20EARS Can't Partition As Primary / Sort It Out?

May 4, 2011

I am trying to build my second home file server after building an experimental x386 unit.

Gigabyte x64 Motherboard with 3core processor and 4GB RAM
10 1.5TB SATA HDD (Mostly WD15EARS and W15EADS)
2 2TB SATA2 HDD (WD20EARS)
I want to create a RAID 6 Array of the 10 1.5TB drives and (1.5 TB partitons of the 2 TB drives) the remaining 0.5TB of the 2 TB drives will be used for RAID 1 arrays (SWAP, root and usr)

When i partition the drives the 1.5 TB drives can be Primary or Logical. The 2 TB drives do not give me this option.

For the 2 TB drives:
- i can partition into 8GB Swap, 20 GB root, 474GB usr and 1.5TB RAID6.
- When i select (Physical partition for RAID) I CANNOT change the Bootable FLag to ON. It always stay OFF. If i use other file systems such as exf4 it can be changed to ON.
- when i continue with the installation it fails while installing GRUB.

Questions:
Why does my 2TB drive not allow me the choice of Primary or Logical?
Is the Bootable Flag = Off the reason GRUB will not install?
How can I achieve my goal of using the 2TB drives for RAID 1 and RAID 6
