Ubuntu :: Secretly Changes Browser Language Setup Without Request
Aug 7, 2011
I had that standard "Ubuntu Firefox Modifications" addon/extension in my browser and it turned out that one of the things it does is automatically manipulate the language settings in Firefox so that it reverts to a setting everytime firefox starts. So basically in my Ubuntu computer I am not allowed to change the preset of the language of my browser.
This is the item controlled by the "intl.accept_languages" line in about:config, which everytime it is changed (either by me or by a software) Ubuntu sneaks up and reverts the setting back, so that every time I restart/reopen Firefox I am back to square one. The thing is this wasn't the case until recently. I have no idea what happened or when or how but obviously I don't want it and I want to know how I can get back to the way it was.
I just switched back from Mint 10, and while setting to work different input method apps like SCIM and Ibus, bumped into a problem(welcome back to SUSE). After installing Scim, my chinese input works only on one application (Goldendict), it doesn't work in any other app. So I tried Ibus, same result. SO far nothing helped me to make them work. What I 'm trying to find out. Is where I can setup language input method in SUSE, I haven't found such an option anywhere in KDE, yast. WHile in Mint there is such an option, where you can change your inpud method either to scim, xim, scim-bridge or ibus. I tried qtconfig, there I found it, P.S. Warning rage words!: I feel like I should say it. But my previous SUSE experience and overall usage history proves that there is no better distro than Ubuntu nowadays, this is sad indeed, cause I used to start from SUSE. But its true, SUSE is a real pain in the ***, when it comes to getting things done. It seems like whenever u try to setup something there is always a bad feeling of failure. Don't know, but again I'm been consecutively annoyed but its numbness. I'm sorry, cause I feel like I disregard ppl's hard work and support.
I setup a download directory on my server, and put a test video in it. I tried to run the video in my browser and it only runs part of the video then stops. If I download it and run it on my desktop with mplayer it run the full video. I am not sure why? Here is a link to the video. [URL]. Before I setup more videos I wanted to see if there is an answer to this problem.
I have some music in another language, but when I open the songs in Banshee, their song names just come up as weird characters (like μ).I went to [System --> Administration --> Language Support] and installed support for that language, but the songs still come up like μ. (But in Nautilus, their proper names show).
I know the solution is to change my whole system language to that language, but I don't want to do that, as I am not very fluent in it. Is there any way to enable support for that language while keeping English as the language used to display my desktop?
One computer .... three users .... three languages. How do you make that happen? User A speaks English and is happy with English. No problem. User B needs to use Chinese and would like the full system in Chinese. User C needs to use Thai and Chinese. They would prefer their menus to be in Thai and can use iBus for Chinese entry. How do you set up the system so that each user can select their system language when they login?
While installing Ubuntu 10.10 I chose the wrong language for my keyboard. I tried to fix this in keyboard preferences and it seemed to work. The correct one I need is USA (and don't know exactly the difference between USA and USA alternative international). But every time I boot my laptop I get the old language back (Dutch) while USA is above the others in my preferences.
i recently got a french msi wind U100x running on linux suse enterprise 10 sp1. (i am french and wanted a light netbook with french keyboard)i am totally new to linux and i believe that msi wind is not helping.because i am more used to english for settings, i set the main language to english, but it seems that it automatically reconfigures my keyboard mapping to english as well, so that azerty becomes qwerty.i reset it back to french, so now my keyboard is french, but so is the system.is there a way to differentiate keyboard from main user setting language?
I am new in linux,I installed apache-tomcat on fedora.I can view all web pages on localhost:8080 but when I try to view them by server's url address from another computer, I don't get respond. Can it be a firewall problem or something else?
i just updated from karmic 9.10 to lucid 10.04 using the online upgrade option. so far everything is working great. the only issues i am having seem to involve firefox. when i visit videos i get the message "your browser is no longer supported. please upgrade to a modern browser." i am running 3.6 "canonical" so it is "modern". i am able to watch videos after i close the message. it's just an annoyance to get this message every time i view a video.
next, is on some websites (like this one) it will not supply my login info. but on a few sites (like ebay) it does supply my login info. not sure why some sites work while others don't. the info is there when i look under my saved passwords....
I'm surfing along just fine when I select some link in my browser. The status line reports "... waiting for ..." and the browser seems to stall for a long time (minutes). Often, but not every time, I can select the STOP toolbar icon and reload the page. This time things work normally.
I have a similar but different malfunction running Evolution email connected to my hosted IMAP server. I select a message and see "... formatting ..." and then Evolution seems to stall for a long time (minutes). Rarely the stop-reload actions help reading email. Instead, all Evolution windows go dark grey and the entire desktop stalls.[Analysis -- It has the feel of a "network" issue provoking issues within Evolution itself rather than an Evolution-only malfunction.]
Watching the running system with 'htop' and similar, I do not see where some other application or service is sucking all of the available CPU time or such. [Analysis -- It has the feel that either the browser message or the email message were sent into limbo without reaching their intended destination. Stop-reload sends the bits to the right places and so I get results.]
For some reason, i cannot set my default browser to Chromium. Whenever i open up Chromium, it asks whether it should be the default browser or not. I say yes i mean "Set as default" But nothing happens. When i open it again, i am greeted with the same question again.
when I boot my PC I get two password request, one is for it to be able to log in the wifi catcher and the other is just a pain in the ***, how can I set it to get just one again,
I have this annoying problem, when I boot my PC I get two password request, one is for it to be able to log in the wifi catcher and the other is just a pain in the ***, how can I set it to get just one again, or what could have happened? because I before I just got one.
Every single time I start Empathy, it says "Subscription requested by NAME" (where name is someone's username). I don't know this person, I don't want to say yes. However, every single time I click "No" and it won't remember that I've rejected this subscription! How can I get it to stop prompting me? I want to say "No, and never show me this darn request again, dangit!"
I switched to Kubuntu with the upgrade to Lucid. After a couple updates, I started getting a "Gnome looking" unlock screen on my desktop at start-up. I get the regular KDE keyring password request and a second that looks like the Gnome keyring. I don't know how this happened. I checked in Synaptic and found the gnome-keyring was installed. Can I uninstall this or will that cause problems?
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 on my Macbook Pro 3,1. I would like it if there was an option in Preferences > Keyboard > Layouts > Options that if selected would swap the Ctrl and Command keys around so that those keys would behave like they do in Mac OS. On the macbook pro the keys go fn, ctrl, alt, command, space etc. and it's really much easier to use command (with your thumb) + z/x/c/v/b/w/q/r/a etc. than it is to use ctrl (with your little finger). If your keys are in the same order as mine, try it. I'm sure you'll find it downright awkward using your little finger for ctrl. You might think that I'm just not used to it but that's not it.
I was used to using ctrl for years and when I started using my macbook pro I was astounded by how much easier it is to use command. In Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 on my mac I was able to remap the keys with xmodmap but while with 10.04 the keys are remapped according to xev it has no effect on their behaviour. I can't imagine adding one more option to the list would be that hard. I have learned how to code in the past but it has been years and years and wouldn't have the first clue where to start in Linux. How I can find and contact the developers of this part of GNOME so that I can make the request?
I try use Squid as my proxy server. When I set my firefox to use my proxy server (squid), all is ok, but when I set firefox on another pc (from internet, not local network), all request returned time out turn off my router and connect PC to internet (without router), but still don't work.In iptables is all ok, I think. Where is problem? I think, It isn't problem with squid (because squid don't show error page), but I don't know how fix it
I know it's safer not to block the request for a password that unblocks the keyring but I'm desperate. The more I use ubuntu more times I'm requested to provide the keyring password. Now, this time, i've typed 7 times!
is there a way to limit this nighmare. Every time I bootup i got tired.
Every time I connect to my UBUNTU virtual machine, UBUNTU wants me to install the product. Why doesn't it remember that it has been installed each time I connect to it? My PC is Windows 7 and I am using VirtualBox to connect to the LINUX instance.
New User to Ubuntu by the way. I have two computers, both running Ubuntu 10.4 fully updated and I am trying to bring files from one computer to the other with Filezilla ftp client. I was able to do this before, but I ended up having to reformat because of a driver screwup that I couldn't figure out how to fix. Now I am at a loss on how I managed to allow the computer with the files to connect to the one receiving the files. Computer A is the one that has the files that I am trying to send to computer B. Every time I try to send them over I get a "connection was refused" error.
Typed in the right IP, username, password, and port but still wont connect. Are there any things I have to do in terminal to allow access? I installed firestarter and just disabled it so ports should be open. By the way, I am using FTP because it was much simpler then trying to dink around with Samba and this is a pretty safe network. - Enabled firewall, forwarded the ports in the events list then we get "request timed out" - Reformatted> Fresh install >Updated
I'm dual booting Ubuntu 9.10 and win7. I have an NTFS partition on my disk and whenever i want to browse files on that partition I'm required to enter my password. my problem is that my music folder is located on that partition, and as a result, whenever I open rhythmbox, it cant access the files on that partition and begins to remove them from the library. in order to prevent this i must browse to that partition manually and enter my password upon request, prior to opening rhythmbox.
on a side note - shouldn't the spell checker on the Ubuntu forums recognize "Ubuntu" as a legit word ?
After I've booted my machine I can browse the internet over my wireless network just fine, but when I start Evolution email it prompts for my admin password beforeonnecting to ISPCan I automate / avoid my respnse to this password prompt ?
Since loading Lucid I keep getting pestered with a request to provide a password as the screen is blank. When installing Lucid and applying the Ubuntu-Restricted-Extras the screen went blank during the process and again there was the need to provide a password. Is there some way that I can avoid this continuous need to keep providing this information? It tends to be a pain in the backside.
