Networking :: Browser "waiting For ..." Stalling / Browser Seems To Stall For A Long Time?

Feb 7, 2011

I'm surfing along just fine when I select some link in my browser. The status line reports "... waiting for ..." and the browser seems to stall for a long time (minutes). Often, but not every time, I can select the STOP toolbar icon and reload the page. This time things work normally.

I have a similar but different malfunction running Evolution email connected to my hosted IMAP server. I select a message and see "... formatting ..." and then Evolution seems to stall for a long time (minutes). Rarely the stop-reload actions help reading email. Instead, all Evolution windows go dark grey and the entire desktop stalls.[Analysis -- It has the feel of a "network" issue provoking issues within Evolution itself rather than an Evolution-only malfunction.]

Watching the running system with 'htop' and similar, I do not see where some other application or service is sucking all of the available CPU time or such. [Analysis -- It has the feel that either the browser message or the email message were sent into limbo without reaching their intended destination. Stop-reload sends the bits to the right places and so I get results.]

Ubuntu :: Takes A Long Time To Open A Browser ?

May 11, 2011

After upgrading to a 64-bit Ubuntu 11.04, I have found that it takes a lot longer to open any browsers such as Firefox, Google Chrome or Opera. Does anyone know why? I thought 64 bit Ubuntu should be faster than the 32 bit version. Nevertheless, I see no difference besides the browser problem mentioned above.

Software :: Chromium Performance - Opening Link In Background Tab Stall Browser

Feb 12, 2011

I tried the Googles praised Chromium browser and while it seems to render pages fast enough and has a really nice interface, I experienced an annoying responsiveness problem. Opening a link in a background tab seems to stall the browser almost completely until the page has been loaded and rendered. For example scrolling the page that I'm currently viewing becomes almost impossible. The same actually applies to the current tab too, of course. If the page in the tab hasn't been loaded completely, scrolling is really really clumsy. I tried disabling the installed extensions and also tried experimenting with some command line options, but no help there.

CentOS 5 :: X/Gnome Takes Long Time To Load And Sudo Takes Long Time To Execute

Oct 13, 2009

I am running Centos 5.3. I ran no updates, performed no installs, nor changed any configuration immediately prior to this issue. My problem is this: when I run the command startx (default runlevel 3), it is a long time (5-10 minutes) before Gnome startx, and once it does start applications will not run. Also, when I try to use sudo (from any environment, even ssh), it is a long time (5-10) before the command is executed.

I cannot say for sure, but it seems like this is an intermittent problem. Sometimes X takes a long time to start, but once it starts it will launch programs. Sometimes X takes a long time to launch, but once it starts it will only launch certain programs. Though presently X always takes a long time to start, and I cannot successfully launch any programs.

A while back a had a similar problem to this (x taking long time to start, sudo taking long time to execute) and it ended up being a DNS problem. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what it was and I stupidly did not document it. Maybe this is also DNS related, I don't know.

I don't know what log files to look at for problems with X, Gnome, and sudo taking a long time to start.

Networking :: Wget Can Access / Browser Cannot

Jun 27, 2010

I have been having a problem on my Ubuntu desktop with the wireless connection. I am now running Ubuntu 10.04, but the problem showed up immediately after upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10. This machine is used as a CUPS server so my wife can print from her laptop and get to a printer downstairs. Intermittently, I will be unable to access the CUPS server web pages (or any other web pages on the local Apache server) from a remote machine on the internal network. I also cannot connect in via SSH. However, from the wireless desktop itself the web pages are still accessible and a local browser can also access remote web sites just fine. So, the network connection is still up.

To try to determine how often this was happening, I wrote a simple Bash script that checked if a page could be accessed on the web server on the wireless machine. I used wget to access a page and then log the results to a file while running the script from a crontab entry. It turns out that even though I cannot access a web page using a remote browser, I can access the same web pages using wget from a remote machine. This has me a little confused..What could be causing this situation? I do not have a firewall running on the desktop with the wireless connection. After a while, the blockage of inbound web pages from a remote browser is "fixed" and I can again access the CUPS (and other) pages.

Networking :: Pages Do Not Load With Any Browser Under All Distributions

May 27, 2010

I have a serious problem relating network connectivity under all Linux distributions. I have tried variety of browsers, but the webpages either load partially or do not load at all. Surprisingly, app manager still works well, and I can download apps at full speed from xterminal or app manager. This became an issue which renders Linux distributions close to useless to me. I am currently connected through a router, but direct connection does not solve the problem. What is more, my phone, Nokia N900 is experiencing the same problem with its web browser. I assume, it's due to the fact that N900 uses full Linux distribution. Internet works just fine under all Windows versions (XP, Vista, 7).

Fedora Networking :: Cisco VPN Connection - How To Force Browser

May 9, 2009

Just wanted to ask a small question... I've set up a VPN connection to my university and i installed and configured everything ok, cause I can connect without any problems...

Now that I'm connected I want my browser to run through the VPN tunnel created by the connection so i can access certain sites that are else inaccessible, but how do i force my browser (I'm using firefox atm) to do that?

When I'm on MAC of Windows OS, as soon as i connect with a VPN, all connection run through them. Fedora seems to ignore the VPN connection and just continues to use my home-network to connect to the internet.

So the basic question is: how do i use the VPN connection.

Fedora Networking :: Wireless Connection Looks OK / Browser Is Not Working

Dec 27, 2009

I have a very strange problem with Fedora 12 and my wireless Broadcom 4311 card. After the installation of Fedora 12 the wireless card was visible but not activated. I did an extensive search in Internet and finally I got everything done. The card was visible and activated. I found my home network; the strength of the signal was nearly 100%.The problem is that although the card is visible and activated my browser is not working well. I can say that it is not working at all. Even now I am using other computer to write this message because Firefox cannot load any web page at all.

The strange part of the problem comes with the fact that when I open terminal window and when I am using yum everything looks OK. The speed is very low though.Does anybody have some ideas about the problem and its solution? When I use Windows on the very same computer everything is fine, the Internet speed is close to the maximum limits of my provider's speed which is 10 mbps.

Fedora Networking :: Duplicate Icons In Network Browser?

Apr 30, 2011

This is more of a cosmetic issue than anything, I guess, but it's kind of annoying so I'm trying to understand the reasons for it.I currently have two computers running on my upstairs network. One is a Mac running OS X Snow Leopard (with Windows Sharing enabled and nothing else) and the other is now running Fedora (15).When I look under Browse Network in Nautilus, I see two icons for my Mac.One seems to point to my system via the IP address and the other via the short hostname. If they represented seperate network protocols, I could understand it but they're both representing SMB connections. So my question is WHY? I added the IP and hostname to Fedora's hosts file thinking it might "unify" the presentation here

Ubuntu Networking :: 25% Slower Than Win7 - Browser Firefox

Jun 17, 2011

Just installed the latest 11.04 64bit ubuntu, using std cd install alongside windows7, ticking the "add all extras" option, to ensure I got all the latest drivers etc.. The pc is brand new

Acer emachines E644 - AMD 2 Core C-50
3Gb DDR3 mem
500 Gb hard drive

Pre-installed: 64bit Win 7 home premium I've literally changed nothing in win7 other than using wubi to install ubuntu 1st time around (ubuntu appears as a win program - and was un-installed as such). Note: It is too late to now check, but......... under wubi/win7 I had no sense that the browser firefox was running slow - i didn't do a speedtest.net cos of other priorities (and it seemed fine). On advice, I started again (new partitions etc). The Problem: Ubuntu is now 25% slower (broadband) than Win7! Actually, it feels worse than that - more like it was on my previous lap top that had 512Mb ram running xp. Here are the results after switching os's a couple of times.

[Code]....

Firefox managed one spurious result of 5.89, but the graph (on the speedtest display) was absolutely all over the shop (like it's overall results). Compare that to iExplorer - total stability, and in fact, more like 30% faster + a much better ping. Anyway, I guess you know all this, I've seen that plenty of others have noticed this speed drop in the past, so:
