I've just installed Ubuntu natty, and I'm using the good old classic interface.
I found that the Screenlets disappear when I press show desktop.
This is a known issue :

but the solutions don't seem to work anymore.
I am running a Gateway MX6121 laptop with Ubuntu 11.04.I had Screenlets installed under 10.10, did a complete removal and installation of the latest version.The screenlet manager opens, and there is an indicator applet, but I cannot add any screenlets to the desktop. When I double-click on a screenlet, the screen flashes like it is trying to add to the desktop, but nothing happens.

I have two optical drives (not SATA) that previously showed up as /dev/hda and /dev/hdb. No longer. I see no mention of them in fstab and catting all the /dev/dvd /dev/cd... /dev/sr.. turns up nothing. If I place a disk with info in the drive nothing appears anywhere I can see (not in dmesg).
K3b tells me no devices found. wodim tells me Detected CD-R drive: /dev/sr1 wodim: Cannot do inquiry for CD/DVD-Recorder. Errno: 5 (Input/output error), test unit ready scsi sendcmd: fatal error CDB: 00 00 00 00 00 00 cmd finished after 0.000s timeout 40s (These are not SATA drives.) I noticed rebooting will show drives if there is media in there. However, that disappears after a while as well. Then inserting and reinserting cdroms gives no messages in dmesg.
I'm running Slackware64 13.1. When I change the bright of my screen, xfce power manager show a info bar. But now it disappear, when I run xfce4-power-manager from a terminal I get this info:

When I restarted my computer all my desktop icons had disappeared. I still have the programs in my documents file or wherever but my desktop is clear. Is there any way i can restore them without doing it one by one? i.e. get back to my previous state.

My panels disappeared after i clicked the log out button and i had to shut down the computer by right-clicking the desktop and clicking shut-down. However when i rebooted, the panels were still gone, my icons on the desktop weren't there and i couldnt right-click on the desktop. i tried updating to 10.10 to solve the problem but that didnt work. running xfce4-panel via "alt-f2" didnt work either.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Lucid installation which I've imaged and pushed to several computers on the network at my office. The system authenticates network users with Active Directory using Kerberos, and mounts NFS shares from a Lucid server downstairs using pam_mount. It all works quite smoothly most of the time, but I get desktop icons in Gnome only on the first login. If I log out, then log in as a different user (local or network, it doesn't matter), the desktop icons are all gone. Everything else looks normal, and I can open a Nautilus window and view any location on the hard drive just as expected. If I use the run dialog or a terminal window to executekillall nautilus the icons are restored. This works whether any instance of a file browser window is open or not.
I have noticed similar, but far less consistent, behavior with gnome-panel. Every once in a while the panels will fail to appear when I log in, but I can restore them withkillall gnome-panel When I run either command, everything works fine until the next login. If I reboot the machine, I get everything back again for one login. Then the desktop icons will disappear, and I have to kill Nautilus and let it restart in order to get them back. I expect I'm missing something important here, but I don't know where to look next.
When I activate the nvidia and restart, the desktop disappears. I have tried re-installing Ubuntu and mint and it keep happening. The computer is has a single core amd athlon 64, 1.5gb's of ram and a nvidia 7300gs card.

In Kick-off the computer section that has yast and run command and another app. YaSt and the other app (I can't remember what it was) have disappeared and only run command is left.

So here is my situation...I have a 16 GB SDHC card installed in the reader in my netbook as additional storage. As the main solid state "hard drive" itself is only 16 GB I leave the card in at all times. I would like to do away with the desktop icon as I never use it to access the SD card. Any way to do this? I believe it appear as part of the HAL process so perhaps it will go away with 10.04.

The problem is that if I logon from computer 1 and open some programs, I don't see these programs when I logon from computer 2.I logon with the same user, so I find this strange. This is a simple .conkyrc tweak that doesn't need feh, it doesn't have the distracting faun shadow-border and most importantly, it doesn't disappear when you click your desktop (On my system anyway). I found that getting rid of the own_window_argb_values yes suggested in other fixes and replacing it with a specific alpha and then changing window type to override solved all my issues. I've noticed no bugs or strange happenings. This seems to be a common problem with a lot of workaround solutions. I think this is a much more elegant way. Edit: Not persistant... After 2 reboots it's back to normal.

The word here is I would like to move to xfce. Doing another test, I installed Debian Lenny + xfce and was way much faster than xubuntu.
My question: Can I install Ubuntu Desktop command only + xfce ? Is it going to be faster than xubuntu? Is there another recommendation for a debian based distro with xfce which runs faster than xubuntu?
I got rid of my bottom panel, but I am still used to 'Show Desktop' button right in the bottom left corner. I was just thinking is it possible to Toggle 'Show Desktop' state just by moving my mouse in that corner?I was thinking of using wmctrl and compiz commands edge biding, but my problem is that wmctrl has two different commands - one for showing desktop one for hiding. But I want to toggle.

I tried installing Kubuntu 10.10 yesterday and when I booted into the desktop it wouldn't show anything but blurriness and lines. It was completely unusable. It showed that on the live cd too. I then tried install Elementary OS. It installed and had the same result. This is getting extremely frustrating and I have no idea of what to do.rgot to take a screenshot of either one but I found one on the elementary launchpad bug page.
