Ubuntu :: Unable To Add Any Screenlets To The Desktop?
Jun 30, 2011
I am running a Gateway MX6121 laptop with Ubuntu 11.04.I had Screenlets installed under 10.10, did a complete removal and installation of the latest version. The screenlet manager opens, and there is an indicator applet, but I cannot add any screenlets to the desktop. When I double-click on a screenlet, the screen flashes like it is trying to add to the desktop, but nothing happens.
I've just installed Ubuntu natty, and I'm using the good old classic interface. I found that the Screenlets disappear when I press show desktop. This is a known issue :
How do i install screenlets i went to gnome-lookand got the ring sensor screenlet and extracted the tar.gz file to desktop just not sure where to go from there.
I installed screenlets last night and the weather widget starts regardless of how many times I delete it. The cairo clock will not start no matter how many times I add it and tic the auto start box. So I uninstalled screenlets this morning to start over and it's still doing the same thing. Does anyone know of a way to fix this?
does anyone know how I can get my screenlets to boot on start-up? Couldn't find out how through google and I can't find an option on the screenlet or the screenlet manager that sets them to automatically start on start up.
Running 10.10. After installing Screenlets from the software center, I opened the screenlets manager to start the GCal widget that I wanted to run. However, when I click start/stop nothing happened. I was hoping that it was something simple so I moved my dock around to see if the widget was starting behind the taskbar or dock, but no such luck. I have the widget layer enabled in compiz, but the screenlet is not showing up there either.. Just a blank screen when I hit F9.
I've installed compiz, conky, compiz-fusion, compiz-plugins-extra and I can see all the options that seem to be necessary for the screenlets to function. I just don't see anything for any of the screenlets when I try to enable them via start/stop....
Can you get Screenlets for Fedora 13? Google Gadgets is good, but when I used Ubuntu 10.04 on Screenlets looked much better. As much as I prefer Fedora, there doesn't seem to much of these Desktop effects about.
I got into using screenlets on the Maverick RC and was looking forward to using them again when the official release came out. However when I try and invoke them from the Accessories menu the dialog briefly pops up before disappearing. It's not even on the screen long enough to draw the dialogs contentsIt tried entering "screenlets" at the terminal and I get this....
** (screenlets-manager.py:1741): WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'WnckWindowState' as enum when in fact it is of type 'GFlags' ** (screenlets-manager.py:1741): WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'WnckWindowActions' as enum when in
I was playing around with Screenlets and would like to use the radio. I can't seem to get it to play any of the default radio stations, also when I add a custom web site I get nothing. The web site I added plays fine with Mplayer, but does not work with the Screenlets radio. I have also edited the Menu.xml for screenlets radio and added the web site I would like to listen to, but nothing. I have also downloaded he restricted extras
I'm trying out Screenlets widgets, but whenever I click the "show desktop" button, all the widgets vanish, how do I prevent this happening? so no matter what they will always be under everything else, but there when u minimize all windows.
When I try to run Screenlets from Applications > Accessories > Screenlets, it says "Starting Screenlets" for a few seconds, and then nothing happens. 'screenlets-manager' from the terminal produces the following
Code: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/share/screenlets-manager/screenlets-manager.py", line 28, in <module> import screenlets File "/usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/screenlets/__init__.py", line 36, in <module> import rsvg ImportError: No module named rsvg
I have checked to make sure python-rsvg is installed. Upon looking for a solution, I read somewhere that it might have something to do with Compiz. I installed the Compiz settings manager, but when I run it from System > Preferences > CompizConfig Settings Manager, it does the exact same thing Screenlets does ("Starting CompizConfig Settings Manager", then nothing).ccsm from the terminal produces the following
I had screenlets working Just Fine on F 10, but it hit EOL so I used preupgrade to move to F 11. Now, I can't get them working no matter what I do. If I try to run screenlets-manager from a terminal I get this message:
Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/share/screenlets-manager/screenlets-manager.py", line 28, in <module> import screenlets ImportError: No module named screenlets
And, I can't reinstall them because they require python-dateutil which doesn't seem to have a version for F 11. I even tried downloading the tarball and running setup.py, but it crashed because it tries to import a module that doesn't exist.
I've recently installed F14 on my netbook. All went well. I've installed Screenlets, and they run well. Unfortunately I have to reload all the widgets I have running on startup to make them show.
I believe the problem is the order the Screenlets are loading. Is there a way for me to restrain the Screenlets from loading until Compiz has been loaded? I've added the widgets I want to load to the gnome session startup script using gnome-session-properties, but no luck in ordering the timing they load. I seem to remember in older Fedora releases you could change the load order. Anyway no luck there.
Next I created a bash script with a sleep delay to load the widgets. I added the script to gnome-session-properties, still no luck. The only way I can get the widgets to show is to manually reload them once the desktop/Compiz has loaded.
On SuSE 11.3 x 64 when I log into KDE4 the screenlets appear and work normally. If I log into Gnome or lxde the screenlet manager appear but screenlets themselves don't.
Is there a way to enable opacity in screenlets? I'm using Debian Squeeze with Gnome. I noticed there is a bug around but it should be fixed?? http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=518179
This is an easy solve, I think. (I'm not having much luck with OpenSuse's one click install.) I installed screenlets using one click but can only start it via the command line. It never showed up in my Gnome menu system.
As an aside, I reverted to the old style gnome menu. I tried OpenSuse's updated Gnome menu but it seemed awkward. Is it just me?
Just noticed I misspelled manager. Is there a way to change the message header?
i wanted to install screenlets under fedora 11 but python wont let me, is there a way to do it i keep getting the Python(abi) dependency missing message I've tryed both 32 and the 64 bits version, even the noarch i found here with no results at all
Each time I pass with a cursor over a widget on the desktop its side bar appears, of course it should because of resizing and moving or do some setting, but that is very boring if I do not intend to use that bar. Screenlets behave better, the setting menu appear only with proper clicking. Is there a way to manage jumping widget menu bar not to appear on every cursor passing ?
for instance, it said that "docky needs proper composition to work properly" when it was working properly before. after having too many flash applications open, after clicking on a link to a videos video, everything crashed, and it said that *for the 20th time now in a week* that kwin has crashed. then i tried to log out and log back in since that normally fixed everything, but i couldn't log out, instead i had to killall xorg but all that showed next was a black screen instead of what it should have shown, the login screen. i had reboot from the terminal and the login screen was normal, but when i booted in to kde, everything that needed opengl and composition crashed. docky doesn't have a black box around it, but it won't intellihide like it should *and i tried to set it back to that setting but it didn't give me the option to*
We've got an old pentium computer dual booting Ubuntu and Windows XP. We've purchased a PNY GeForce FX 5200 256MB 128-bit DDR PCI Video Card for it. After installing it, we had full access to the XP and installing drivers from there went without a hitch and appears to work fine. When we tried to boot into Ubuntu, all we got was the (initramfs) prompt, and we're both relatively new to the fantastic world of Linux and so we have no idea what to do with it and finding information concerning our issue has been fruitless, as we can't seem to find anyone that has had a similiar problem.
We then uninstalled the card, booted up Ubuntu and tried to install drivers via administration>Hardware Drivers, but the computer doesn't appear to have any on board graphics, and so Ubuntu won't allow us to use any of the drivers in the hardware drivers (via administration). We then did a tonne of research and followed a few tutorials for installing Unix drivers from the Nvidia web site.
One of the tutorials that we followed involved doing a Control+Alt+F1 and then shutting down the GDM to install the new drivers. After installing the new drivers, we for what ever reason, couldn't restart the GDM. After what appears to be a failed attempt at installing the driver, we cannot access the desktop and are now presented with the following message (when booting in normal kernel mode): "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode. The following error was encountered. You may need to update your configuration to solve this. (EE) No devices detected.". The only 4 options are:
#1)Run Ubuntu in low-graphics mode for just one session. This results in a black screen without a prompt, Control+Alt+F1 gets us a prompt in the top left of the screen that isn't flashing and we can't do anything at all.
#2)Reconfigure graphics. This gives us three options of which we have no idea what to do with:
1) Use default (generic) configuration, 2) Create new configuration for this hardware, 3) Use your backed-up configuration, along with the OK and Cancel option, which, the latter option takes us back to the original 4 options.
#3)Troubleshoot the error. There are four options here:
1)Review the xserver log file (no idea what to do with this), 2)Review the startup errors (no idea what to do with this), 3)Edit configuration file (no idea what to do with this), 4)Archive configuration and logs (which has been done).
#4)Exit to console login. (gets us a prompt in the top left of the screen that isn't flashing and we can't do anything at all). We are in dire need of some guidance, before attempting any of the options in "Reconfigure graphics" , as we have no idea what to do with any of it and recovery mode doesn't get us anywhere either.
I Wanna Record My Desktop So I Found a Program Called gtk-recordmydesktop Ok,Then i Installed It But When i click Record Waaaa The Windows Close. I Tried Istanbul and It Wasn't Running. I just got a new desktop PC with Intel i5 650 Dual Core 3.2GHz 4M Turbo. I would load up the installation cd, once I selected to install the screen would go blank and nothing happens. Ubuntu 10.4LTS is still in beta1 but it works. I would like to use a non-beta version.Has anyone encontered this and have a work around?
For the past few weeks my system has been exhibiting some strange behavior. The first of these instances has been in the form of a total system lockup necessitating a power cycle -- ie. no kernel panic or oops, but cessation of all on-screen activity and an unresponsive mouse and keyboard. ( The first lockup occurred when the monitor was powered down)
Just a few days ago, I started noticing something else : Launching Firefox (3.6.4pre) resulted in it locking up near start-up especially if I was logged into Gmail. After that I experienced a total system lockup and then another one which has placed me in the situation as suggested in the title.
Specifically, KDM and the KDM login manager will start-up and I will be allowed to type my password. Immediately after that when the first of the icons in the KDE start-up animation starts to come into focus the screen goes black and I am returned to the KDM login manager -- I can enter my password again and continue this process ad infinitum.
Trying to diagnose the issue, I attached GDB to KDM. It seems that after I enter my password one or more of the KDE start-up processes dies with signal 1 or to be more specific :
Code:
Program received signal SIGUSR1, User defined signal 1. 0x00007f4ae742d3c3 in select () from /lib/libc.so.6 (gdb) bt full
After meddling with ".private folder's permission" in home folder I am not able to get into my desktop and exibiting the message "Natilus could not create the following required folders: /home/jayan/Desktop, /home/jayan/.config/nautilus.Before running nautilus please create thease folders,or set permission such that Nautilus can create them".
