Just installed Ubuntu Server 10.04 on a fresh install of VMWare Player on Windows 7. When booted, I get a login prompt in console window. I can login but cannot see a desktop. I followed some instructions to install gnome-shell. Now when I type gnome-shell I get the following code...

I have set up a server running ubuntu desktop, and I'm able to logon through remote desktop (win 7). The problem is that if I logon from computer 1 and open some programs, I don't see these programs when I logon from computer 2.I logon with the same user, so I find this strange. Is there some setting I have missed to be able to see the same from any computer (logon through remote desktop).

Well, as described in the title, I can't see the desktop icons, and the "show desktop" option under "gconf-editor >apps>nautilus>preferences" says it's not writable...
I tried deleting the nautilus configuration folder, and the gnome configuration folder...

I got rid of my bottom panel, but I am still used to 'Show Desktop' button right in the bottom left corner. I was just thinking is it possible to Toggle 'Show Desktop' state just by moving my mouse in that corner?I was thinking of using wmctrl and compiz commands edge biding, but my problem is that wmctrl has two different commands - one for showing desktop one for hiding. But I want to toggle.

I use default ambiance theme.
I love this theme, but show desktop icon is ugly.
It looks like some theme has show desktop icon in theme folder, but others are not.
How can I change icon? I think it's ubuntu's default show desktop icon.

I tried installing Kubuntu 10.10 yesterday and when I booted into the desktop it wouldn't show anything but blurriness and lines. It was completely unusable. It showed that on the live cd too. I then tried install Elementary OS. It installed and had the same result. This is getting extremely frustrating and I have no idea of what to do.rgot to take a screenshot of either one but I found one on the elementary launchpad bug page. Oh yeah, this happened when I tried to install the alpha of Ubuntu 11.04 too

Whenever I add something to my desktop, if something with the same name has been on my desktop previously (like 'screenshot.png'), it will go to where it was previously, which sometimes causes the icons to overlap and what not.
I just wanted to know if it was possible to make the icons always go to the first open place.

This is a super tiny detail that most people probably don't even notice, but why is the show desktop button icon cut off? It looks really weird.
I don't think it was like that in 9.10. Is there any way to fix it?

After the recent upgrade to Lucid, my gnome session is working fine, but my kde session leaves much to be desired. Basically the plasma desktop is not showing up.
I am seeing plasma-desktop in synaptic unchecked and in the process of installing it.
Why was it removed in the first place and will it show up now?
Will report back after a reboot.

Just wondering if it is a distro thing or what.
I still can access them from the Places menu but how can I add them back to the desktop when I plug them in or pop in the disk?

I hate the purple "Show Desktop Icon" in Lucid and I finally figured out how to change it:
1) sudo apt-get install wmctrl
2) Create the following script and proceed as directed within the script's comments:
#!/bin/sh
# GLD's Show Desktop Button script. Here's how to do it.
# sudo apt-get install wmctrl
# Right click on the panel and select "Add To Panel".
# Choose "Custom Application Launcher".
# Use the file name of this script for the Command.
# Use whatever icon that you want. The generic Ubuntu Show_Desktop_Button icon is located here:
# /usr/share/gnome/help/user-guide/C/figures/show_desktop_button.png
if [ -f /tmp/toggle_show_desktop_$USER ]thenwmctrl -k off
rm /tmp/toggle_show_desktop_$USER elsewmctrl -k on
touch /tmp/toggle_show_desktop_$USERfi

I created an image and then saved it to my desktop as *.jpg
It doesn't show on my desktop anywhere. However, when I click to upload from my desktop to a website or to 'insert' and attachment in my email program and browse to my desktop, it shows that it is on my desktop and all works fine.
I have a feeling the * is the problem in the name and I would happily rename it if I could only get to it from my desktop but I cannot at all.
Any ideas how I can fix this?

I have been trying to active the shortcut <Super>+D to minimize all active windows and show desktop. Compiz is already install on my system, that I have tried all possible combinations of "show desktop" functionality in Compiz and Gnome itself. However, whenever I use the shortcut, it activates(maximize) one window first, and it shows desktop if I use the shortcut second time. Actually same thing happens when I press the "show desktop" button on the panel as well

I have a Fujitsu T730 and I just love 11.04 with Unity. One of the two things missing so far is a 'Show Desktop' button that works (there is a crude workaround I tried and dismissed: [URL]). If I understood correctly there is a Compiz plug-in under development here:[URL] how to install that?

I'm running F 13 with Gnome and Compiz-fusion on my laptop. I've disabled Show Desktop in the Compiz settings. I've checked with the Configuration Editor, and that shows it to be disabled. However, every, single time my mouse slips up to the top left corner, it activates. Not only that, when it does it, all of my screenlets Go Away, and the only way to get them back is to restart them. how to tell Compiz that I Really Mean It when I say that I don't want it to show the desktop?

I just got Ubuntu and I feel like there is going to be a really simple solution but right now I cannot find any information on a solution. I run 9.10 desktop i386 or w/e and I have a wireless connection. The network does not show up when I go the network manager to select a network. No networks show up and all it lets me do is create a new network connection which I have no idea how to do. I think it might have to do with my device recognition, but the network is fine it is just Ubuntu.

Any tools to assemble a set of images into a Gnome desktop wallpaper slide show -- like the Cosmos one in the default selection?I can see its a folder with the images and an xml file that controls the "playback". Presumably there is a reasonably easy tool to use to create my own short of reverse engineering the xml files.

When there has been no activity on my computer for a few minutes a slideshow of desktop backgrounds begins. Last week a new image was added: a red circle with a red diagonal line. It's like the "Don't go there" traffic sign. I have no idea where it came from.

I've been using Ubuntu for several years, and wanted to try the netbook remix on my old Acer Aspire 5050 laptop.
I tried to install and switch from desktop 10.10 to netbook 10.10, and the home page and menus didn't display properly. I took this as being due to some conflict with an exiting bit of software (I use it as a LAMP server and dev machine, so it had a lot of stuff one it). Keen to try the netbook edition, and clean down my laptop, I installed in from scratch, formatting the HDD etc.
Anyway, the issue is still the same.
It is quite hard to describe what is displayed. The left menu is just empty, with no icons. The top bar is also empty. When you mouse over the left menu, blank pop-outs appear. Also, some icons are blank or mangled. Occasionally, when I close a dialogue, or do an alt-tab, the left menu icons appear, but only for a split second.
Anyway, screen dumps (reduced to half size) will explain this better, so here are a couple...
Top and left menus showing as empty semi transparent bars.
Same with an app running
with mouse over a left menu item, and a blank pop-out with black surround. code...

I'm having a problem where the hidden directories in my home directory show up as disks on the desktop.
These also show up as disks in the Nautilus browser. The attached screenshot shows this.
Does anyone know how to disable this behavior?
