My Desktop icons disappear, and the only thing that i think off is conky. since it started after it installed it.Running Ubuntu 10.04This is my conky file

Downloaded and played latest Ubuntu (10.10) to get an idea of how it works (without actually installing it). Currently i use windows 7. When I restarted my computer all my desktop icons had disappeared. I still have the programs in my documents file or wherever but my desktop is clear. Is there any way i can restore them without doing it one by one? i.e. get back to my previous state.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Lucid installation which I've imaged and pushed to several computers on the network at my office. The system authenticates network users with Active Directory using Kerberos, and mounts NFS shares from a Lucid server downstairs using pam_mount. It all works quite smoothly most of the time, but I get desktop icons in Gnome only on the first login. If I log out, then log in as a different user (local or network, it doesn't matter), the desktop icons are all gone. Everything else looks normal, and I can open a Nautilus window and view any location on the hard drive just as expected. If I use the run dialog or a terminal window to executekillall nautilus the icons are restored. This works whether any instance of a file browser window is open or not.
I have noticed similar, but far less consistent, behavior with gnome-panel. Every once in a while the panels will fail to appear when I log in, but I can restore them withkillall gnome-panel When I run either command, everything works fine until the next login. If I reboot the machine, I get everything back again for one login. Then the desktop icons will disappear, and I have to kill Nautilus and let it restart in order to get them back. I expect I'm missing something important here, but I don't know where to look next.
Quite often, at start after I shut down my latptop, my taskbar is completely empty and inactive. I can't right-click on it and add anything. The rest is working fine: shortcuts work, terminal works, software works through terminal, sticky notes are opened
View 8 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 32Bit on my Dell Inspiron B130 Laptop, and it works great, way faster then windows XP which was pre-installed on the machine. Everything worked out of the box except for the Wireless but after some reading I was able to get it to work by plugging it in to the wired connection. but anyway the problem I'm having is that it seems like after a few days of use ubuntu starts to act up, things become out of place and not work. this even happens with Linux Mint also. By acting up I mean, Icons start to disappear in the panel, my wireless connection starts to stop working and the only way to keep it on is to either log off and try to log in using KDE instead of GNOME. or open terminal and do the command nm-appt or something someone on the chat told me to do to try and get my wireless icon working.

This happens very randomly. As you can see by the times, both of those were taken on the same day. I logged out and logged back in, and it look fine.
Ubuntu 10.04 Gnome: I have about 5 PCs at home, and all of them have this problem.
The default ubuntu install places top panel icons in the following order:

The power button completely scrolls off the edge, and half of the user-id scrolls off as well, to look like this:

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem which I am having a hard time finding out about. To start I am running Debian 8.0 on a laptop through an external Seagate 2TB HDD that I connect via USB 3.0. My problem, basically, is when ever I use Linux for an extended period, for what ever reason, some of my icons disappear and my terminal breaks. More specifically, say I were to try to shut down the computer at the time of the problem the icons and text telling me which option is which, in xfce4, are gone. Then if I click on the would be shut down button it just goes to a black screen with a white underscore and hangs there. This symptom is probably due to the fact that commands in the linux terminal stop working. As in, if I were to type ls it tells me there is no command (something like that) and tells me some folder directory that I think is where bash is located. I wish I could be more specific with some of these details.
Anyway the only way for me to "fix" it is to just do a hard shut down, then upon reboot it clears the orphaned nodes. Also, before, when I installed linux several weeks before I never noticed this issue, if it was ever present. However, now that I have seen it, I have since tried re-installs of debian to no avail. I have a feeling it could be the external hard drive, but that notion is not based on any evidence.
I have noticed in my pc (i386) and my ps3 (ppc64) under FC12 gnome 2.28 that some icons from some menus doesn't always appear, like in:
Places: Connect Server | Search for Files
System: all
"User name": all
Is this some sort of bug? Or I have done something wrong?

My panels disappeared after i clicked the log out button and i had to shut down the computer by right-clicking the desktop and clicking shut-down. However when i rebooted, the panels were still gone, my icons on the desktop weren't there and i couldnt right-click on the desktop. i tried updating to 10.10 to solve the problem but that didnt work. running xfce4-panel via "alt-f2" didnt work either.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist
View 2 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 9.04 Gnome Desktop (although I have seen the same situation in other versions).When I have a removable media device installed such as a USB flash drive, a CD/DVD or an SD card in the built in reader I have a corresponding icon on the desktop. So here is my situation...I have a 16 GB SDHC card installed in the reader in my netbook as additional storage. As the main solid state "hard drive" itself is only 16 GB I leave the card in at all times. I would like to do away with the desktop icon as I never use it to access the SD card. Any way to do this? I believe it appear as part of the HAL process so perhaps it will go away with 10.04.

View 1 Replies View RelatedThis works on my Slackware64 13.1 using KDE 4.4.4, Conky version 1.8.0. This is a simple .conkyrc tweak that doesn't need feh, it doesn't have the distracting faun shadow-border and most importantly, it doesn't disappear when you click your desktop (On my system anyway). These are the relevant sections to edit:

I found that getting rid of the own_window_argb_values yes suggested in other fixes and replacing it with a specific alpha and then changing window type to override solved all my issues. I've noticed no bugs or strange happenings. This seems to be a common problem with a lot of workaround solutions. I think this is a much more elegant way. Edit: Not persistant... After 2 reboots it's back to normal.
Well, as described in the title, I can't see the desktop icons, and the "show desktop" option under "gconf-editor >apps>nautilus>preferences" says it's not writable...
I tried deleting the nautilus configuration folder, and the gnome configuration folder...
I've just installed Ubuntu natty, and I'm using the good old classic interface.
I found that the Screenlets disappear when I press show desktop.

Have had it on the laptop for a couple days and everything worked greatattempted to see what if Compiz would work and could not get it going. The computer froze upd to hard restart. When I did that and came back I found I have no desktop icons; if I log out and relog back in but switch to classic ubuntu the desktop is fine (of course not the Unity screen). I removed Compiz and attempted to remove and reinstall Unity based on a Google search but nothing changed.Two questions:1. what is the best next move to see if I can get the Unity icons and correct interface back on the desktop.

When the mouse arrow passes over on the left side icons it will sometimes change the color of them but still won't do anything.I did a quick search but did not see anything relatedam an absolute rookie with this Linux thing. Did I make the right choice with Ubuntu?
