I'm on Ubuntu 11.04 and I have this annoying issue. it does happen very often, but enough to be a problem (atleast once a day or more).While I'm browsing the web (not really doing much of anything else) the screen goes black with some text. I don't get enough time to read the text and I'm returned to the login screen. I'm completely logged off, my session isn't still there when I log back in

View 5 Replies View RelatedThis problem started within the last few minutes. I run a program in my browser that uploads data from my machine (ubuntu) to another machine (Fedora 13), for manipulation and then spits back the data that does not match our standardised information.
When I tried to run it a few minutes ago, it seemed to take a long time to make the connection. I went back and checked the machine, everything was connected and fine. I decided to reboot the machine from within KDE and then try again. Same result. I went to the machine again and tried to login through KDE, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then returns me to the login screen. I switched over to a virtual terminal and was able to login using the same credentials. I checked the .xsessions-errors file and this is what I am seeing:

10.10 starts absolutely fine and goes to login screen. I enter my password and then the screen goes blank and returns to the log in page.
I first suspected it was a problem with password recognition but if I enter a wrong password it flashes up with an error so it can't be that. Only started happening after a standard update last night.
Am now having to use my flatmates windows PC to send this message
I was messing around with the screen orientation and thought it would be funny to orient it sideways. Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora.This is my main computer.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 using Wubi. Everything works well, but randomly while I am working my screen will go black and say out of range or no signal. My monitor is a Planar, I have resolution and refresh rate set at factory specs and most of the time it is clear and working well. It seems to be completely random, sometimes it happens while surfing the web, other times I am using gimp, and sometimes I am not near the PC at all. I assume the problem is also the reason I can not use Compiz as well. (Graphics card is a intel 845).

There seems to be no way to enter the graphical linux environment. I was forced to wipe the hard drive clean twice because of this and both times I reinstalled lucid lynx.

At random intervals the video output is turned off for 2 - 3 seconds giving a black screen. (I suspect the 2 - 3 second blank time is how long it takes the monitor to recover after a loss of input signal.) The interval between events can vary from 1 minute to an hour to more than a week, and recently more than a month. Sometimes I get several per hour; other times not for two weeks. Hmm, there was a kernel update in the last week or so.At one time the cause was pointed at a USB driver problem since a number of USB log entries occurred at the same time as the screen blanking. That is not the case here;here is nothing in </var/log/messages> (or the dmesg output) that is anywhere near when a screen event happens.
Got a new Lenovo T500, slapped 9.10 on it. Set of programmes is exactly as on my previous IBM T42, but every so often I get a random crash. No errors, just a complete freeze with a "underscore" cursor in the top-left of the screen.I think / suspect it may have something to do with Transmission running, or perhaps the recent kernel update to 2.6.31-17.Anyone else had anything similar? Maybe on a T400 or R60 / R61 / T60 / T61?

I installed a video driver and after restarting I got as far as the login screen where I saw that the driver did not work: screen is mostly black with random bars of color. I was only able to restart in recovery mode mode. I tried the fix graphics option, which did not work and also some commands that I've seen posted in other threads. So far, still cannot delete the problematic driver or boot up normally successfully.

A couple of times during installation the screen flashed black and diplayed a message for a brief second. I can't read that fast but it says something like "DRM nouveau- unknown or unsupported chipset" and one more line that I can't catch. When this happens, I see the pre-login loading screen, the one that shows an icon of a hard drive, network, and so on as each resource is secured. I can log back in, but this starts a new session- it doesn't remember what I was doing. I had to redo the install and setup several times because of this.
I can log in and so on normally, but the black screen and message will appear at random, forcing me to start all over, which is really frustrating. what's going on? Is it the video card? How do I install a driver for it? Also, the hard drive in question has been through a lot. could it have a bad sector or something? Windows didn't even want to "see" it, that's why Fedora is installed on there.
I have ubuntu on my desktop - works great. The problem is I am trying to install it on my laptop. I have the image burned, and it's booting off my cd rom just fine. The problem comes after that. It goes to the ubuntu loading screen for a pretty long time, then after that the screen scrambles in random black and white box type things, at which point I get no response unless I hit the power button at which point a linux screen pops up and tells me it's waiting for programs to close, then boots down.

I had this issue on windows and solved it by downloading rivatuner and telling it to force my 9700m into staying in 3d performance mode at all times. View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm pretty new to Ubuntu and absolutely loving it. However, I've been having some problems since upgrading to 11.04 (gnome, not unity). Around once or twice a session, the screen will go black, show some text, and kick me out to the login screen. It's not a full restart, but it stays on that black screen for about 20-30 seconds. I was finally able to write down all of the text it displays.
On the opposite side of the screen, next to each entry would simply be "ok." After searching the forums, it seems like a lot of these problems are due having a certain type of graphics card. I checked in the terminal, and I guess I have a "ATI Technologies Inc RS482 [Radeon Xpress 200M]."
I just bought this desktop from my friend and it runs win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. it worked very well the first two days until I changed the hostname of the system.
I did like: hostname myNewName
And everything worked fine. The problem now is when I start ubuntu and and reach username and password screen , I enter my password to login the screen becomes black and return me again to the screen where I put my password again. If I entered wrong password , the system message stating wrong password. On the other hand, when I try to run ubuntu from live-cd I can login easily and access my account.
My friend told me he removed Naultius package and reinstall it for some reason before he gave it to me. Note windows 7 is working properly.
I downloaded and burnt the Kubuntu 10.04 release to a CD. I tried to install it. First time, couldn't find the disks and eventually it froze. Ok, second try, when it's contacting the "time server" (or whatever) another freeze, but this time I notice everything is running fine and then get a nice little image with the current time (increasing seconds and all). Third attemp, clicked the "update this installer" and it went fine. "Yay!" I thought. Well, a few minutes in my beautiful 10.04 system and again, another freeze. Hit the power button and to my surprise a "Shutdown" dialog shows up with a countdown. After 30 seconds it logs out and mouse is working again. I log back in and come here to write this long post, and as I was writing the title "Random mouse/ke..." guess what? Yeah, it froze again. And the little bar that goes after the writing continued happily blinking. Hit the power button but this time mouse and keyboard were still frozen in the login screen.
Short version: mouse and keyboard randomly freeze while the rest of the system apparently work fine.
Recently I've been having an issue where every now and then, all of a sudden fedora logs me out and takes me to the login screen.
All my unsaved work is lost and I have to log back in again.
Is there any way to diagnose this problem and figure out how to solve it?
Alright guys. I need to find a way to enable a black screen screensaver (or turn off the monitor, or something to avoid burn in) while the machine is sitting at the login screen and completely turn off the ability for the computer to sleep. how I can accomplish that?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a few machines set up and running Red Hat 4.1.2-42 in a computer lab. I also have a single test machine running the same version. The machines in the lab work flawlessly.However, when machines are on the login screen, they don't go into power saving mode. That is, after a certain amount of inactivity, the idle login screen should be replaced by a black power saving screen. But this does not happen. The monitor should go into standby (the little green light becomes orange, and the whole screen shuts down until you move your mouse again...you know the drill).I know this is supposed to be the case because this works on the test machine. It just doesn't work in the lab. I think it has something to do with gdm, but I can't for the life of me figure it out.

I have a black screen on the gnome login and i can hear the ubuntu sound. If i press CTRL+ALT+F2 the screen switch from black to the login (terminal version). The problem only appear when i boot from battery power...if i boot from AC power everything is fine !!! I can see the gnome login page. in fact i've reinstalled ubuntu same problem. I think it's a bug with the release. My laptop is a HP TX2000.

Whether or not i get login seems fairly random, and I don't notice if there is any common factor- This is always from a clean boot, and i could be on power, or not on power.This is on a HP 6730b, so the video should be a Intel GMA 4500.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI tried to install Ubuntu 9.10 on one of them by default installation. For the moment there is only one user declared. The installation seems OK, except that Ubuntu didn't find my PPPoE connexion. When I logged in, I got a blank screen with the mouse cursor (it moved, but when I left or right-clicked nothing happened) and on the left something looking like two 1-pixel wide menus, as if the system had understood there were a dual screen. These menus could roll and unroll, and I think I even once managed to shutdown by going to the last invisible item thanks to the keyboard arrows (I'm not sure, because I had also clicked on ctrl+alt+suppr, so it could be a delayed effect of that).
I restarted the computer several times, to get no more than that. When I'm in Gnome safe, everything is OK but I don't have any root privilege there (I guess it's normal): for instance, I can't set up the internet connexion. My 20" 4/3 Philips screen is recognized. Then I changed the screen frequency: it's still OK for Gnome safe session, but now, in the Gnome normal session, instead of a black screen with 1-pixel wide menu, I get a black background picture with white light coming from above and reflecting to an otherwise invisible floor. The mouse cursor is moving, but this is the only thing which works.
I just Installed Ubuntu on my PC (win XP-pro) using wubi, by downloading the .iso from webpage and burned it to cd. The installation went fine, but when I login the screen goes black. I can still see my mouse pointer and one vertical pixel line of the desktop. Could it be the graphics drivers, if so how can I update/change them, via rebooting in safe mode and using command line?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI get a black screen (with tiny bits of white on opposite corners of the screen) every time after logging into Kubuntu Lucid AMD64. The only thing I can do is move my mouse pointer over that black screen which doesn't go away. I booted into recovery mode and with command prompt typed "startx" to start graphical mode. That resulted in the same black screen. Then I decided to reboot and install Fluxbox via the command prompt under recovery mode. Now, I'm able to view graphically under Fluxbox after selecting it over the default KDE and logging in. But how do I get regular KDE/Kubuntu to work again? I don't know what happened to make it stop working!
