However, the disk to which you restore needs to be the same size or bigger. I want to restore the whole thingo a smaller disk than the original.I am considering getting myself an SSD disk which will be considerably smaller than the 160 gb disk I have right now. I need it to work for Windows as well. Unfortunately I can't get rid of Windows quite yet I often participate in webinars on GotoWebinar and they do not support Linux ...
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm looking to set up a bit of a home server, and am wondering about storage. What I'd like is something like RAID 6, which has good redundancy built-in, but with this being a home server, I'd prefer to start a little smaller and leave room to build it up in future. I'd been looking at commercial products like the 'drobo', which seems fairly ideal, but I'd really like to see if I can do it myself. I understand that throwing the RAID into an LVM will allow for some expansion, but the last time I checked, most RAID setups called for the same sized disks, or at least limited the array by the size of the smallest disk present.
What I'd like is the ability to build a basic framework with a few cheap disks, and then as things start filling up, to be able to add larger ones (perhaps eventually pulling out smaller ones as though they'd failed and replacing them with big ones)

Win 7 32 bit on hard drive 1
Win 7 64 bit on hard drive 2
Data partition accessible by 3 OSs
Ubuntu 10.10 on hard drive 2

Everything is working great. I'm using Windows Boot Loader (used easybcd to attach Ubuntu).
I want to expand /dev/sdb3 to have more space for Ubuntu. I am able to shrink the data partition /dev/sdb2, which leaves an unallocated space. I have backed up /dev/sdb3 using Paragon software.
My question is, what is the best way to expand the /sdb3 partition into the unallocated space and restore the ubuntu image backup so that it will use up all the space (unallocated and current /sdb3)? I don't want to screw up since everything is working properly, I just want some more space.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been running a dual boot set-up with Win XP and Ubuntu 9.10. The old 40 gb drive was showing signs of impending failure, so I replaced it with a new 120 gb drive, after saving an image of the old setup. After restoring the image from the original drive to the new one, Windows boots fine from the GRUB menu, but Ubuntu doesn't. I briefly see the Ubuntu "circle" then the screen goes blank. If I hit any key, I get a console screen of error messages (I can provide details if needed).
I think the problem is caused by the fact that the restore process scaled the saved image to fit the new, larger drive, with the result that the Ubuntu partition doesn't actually start where GRUB expects to find it. I'd like to recover the Ubuntu installation, but if is too big a deal, I'll just wait until 10.4 is released and do a clean install.
I have long been using clonezilla as my backup/restore software and have never had a problem with it before, ever. Today I backed up my entire disk (windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10) and upgraded to 11.04 to try it out. I didn't like it, so I decided to restore the backup. Now I can't boot my computer. It gets to a black screen and nothing happens. No error message, nothing. I can still boot from a live USB (which is what I am using now), and I can also boot from a Windows Live CD. I tried using the MBR repair on Windows and reinstalling Grub through the Ubuntu Live USB. Neither of them have worked. Do you have any ideas what the problem might be?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI created two debian bootable pendrive with the newest and basic commands: CP debian.iso and SYNC. When I tried to restoring the pendrive GPARTED sees only few space and is unable to perform any operation on the hidden partition as well in Windows 7.
CFDISK is able to see the partitions but is unable to write anything, just deleting. After deleted any partion GPARTED enconters a wrong block size so is unable to perform any changes.
Thus the only way I found to restoring the pendrive is delete the partion with CFDISK and then formatting the pendrive in Windows, where did I do wrong?
I'm getting ready to deploy a Ubuntu server in a remote location. I am deathly afraid of something going horribly wrong though, so what I'd like to do is be able to somehow image the system when it's working, and be able to restore that remotely via SSH if things go to hell. My first thoughts were that I could partition the hard drive, and install two separate instances of Ubuntu. One would be the server in it's working state, and the other one would be a separate instance of Ubuntu that I could boot into to restore an image (if that's possible).
1. If I had two separate instances of Ubuntu on two separate partitions, and I was currently booted into one of them, would it be possible to tell the Ubuntu server to reboot and boot into the other instance of Ubuntu on the other partition over SSH? (SSH is the only form of access I will have to the server)
2. Is there a better way to remotely restore a server than what I outlined above?
3. Also, I've used the dd command to make backups before, but it copies an entire hard drive byte for byte. Is there an argument I can tag on, or another command to use altogether that will only copy the bits that are being used?
I've recently begun using PING (Partimage is not Ghost) imaging software, and it works great with other Linux distros. Upon my first use on openSUSE, I found that I could not restore the image onto another computer. After a successful restoration of the image, I get: "Could not find /dev/mapper/isw_ddedgibjfd_ARRAY_part2 Want to fall back to /dev/mapper/isw_ddedgibjfd_ARRAY_part2? (Y/n)" during the first boot. I don't know what to do, I've tried taking multiple images, and restoring them on multiple computers, but I always get the same error.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to restore an image from a 40gb partition(6gb used) to a 100gb partition. I set everything up in gparted and and restored the partition image with clonezilla. In gparted, the partition shows the full 100gb partition with 6gb used, however when I boot windows and open the properties on the C: partition, it shows that it's only 40gb. Is there some setting to restore the partition image and use the full 100gb?
View 7 Replies View RelatedRight now I have a OpenSuSE 11.1 server running on a single hard drive. I want to install the HighPoint RocketRAID 1740 card and utilize RAID 10.I wanted to know if the following process would work ok:
1. Image the current hard drive using clonezilla and remove the drive.
2. Install the RAID card with 4 hard drives of the same make and model as the current drive
3. Create the logical volume
4. Restore the image to that volume
Since I am restoring the image to a RAID volume, is that completely transparent to the OS? Or do I need to do a clean install on that volume and reconfigure everything?
I was using Ubuntu, installed over Wubi in WindowsXP. Due to some hard disk issues, I was having some problems booting into Windows. But Ubuntu was working fine. So i backed up all my data from Ubuntu and somehow managed to back up the 'root.disk' from Windows.That hard disk turned out to have some bad sectors. Now I am over a new hard disk with all my data and WindowsXP freshly installed. I want to have my old copy of Ubuntu back as I have the 'root.disk' file with me. How shall I proceed?I tried installing a fresh copy of Ubuntu using Wubi and then replace the 'root.disk' file. But it showed some Grub error.

Once I did the reparitioning disk utility ran for like 8 hrs for reparition of 120 Gigs. After seeing no status after 8 hrs , I just plugged it out.After that am not able to use my HDD seems this wretched utilit has screwed thepartition table. I have Debian 6 (squeeze), I have also seen this under Ubuntu (can not remember how I fixed it). (has worked in ubuntu 10.10)I can hibernate, but when I switch on the system cold boots (it does not restore previous session).Note suspend works fine. Have looked in /var/log/pm-suspend.log Shows for each block of suspend suspend a block of resume suspend, but hibernate hibernate is not followed by resume hibernate ( I assume that is what is expected.)

I have a 8GB SD card formatted as FAT32. I would like to move this disc image onto it. If there were a way to compress this, that would be great. Or, if I could reformat the card so that it could handle files larger than 4 GB, that would be great too. But I don't know how to do either one of these. Also, when I try to mount to the iso, it fails. Attempting with Archive Manager, it says "CD-ROM is NOT in ISO 9660 format".

By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,...

The former simply created an ISO file, which is 1/10th of the size of my hard drive and I do not know how to restore my computer using the ISO. The latter seems to be stuck at 0% even after leaving my PC on for 4 hours and verifying that all the settings are correct.

View 2 Replies View RelatedRecently, I made a disk image of my external hard drive (as it had recently failed). I have yet to get it replaced, so I have a .dd file sitting on my computer. Now, I can mount the .dd file so I can access the files, but I cannot delete any of them. I want to be able to copy the files file by file to my normal folders and delete them from the backup file, as my disk isn't large enough for me to copy them all to the folders and just delete the entire file.
TL;DR = Can I/How do I delete individual files from a .dd backup.
I am having a problem with the USB Start up creator. From within Linux, what's the most risk-free way of imaging these two partitions and saving them to a single image file or archive? I want to preserve the entire partition because I have no idea what I may have forgotten to copy. What is the most suitable program that can do this?
Is there any way to run the partition in a virtual machine at a later date?
After this is done, I want to delete those old partitions and extend my Linux ones.
I am trying to create a bootable USB drive. I go to System > Administration > Startup Disk Creator and click on 'Other' as the image I want to use is not listed. I then find the Chrome OS image and double click but then I return to the Disk Creator and it is still not listed as the source disk.
So does anybody know how to get around this so I can use this program to create a bootable USB drive, or another way that I can create one? I have used the Disk Creator to create a bootable version of Jolicloud (which is probably one of the worst Linux distros out there) before, but now it won't work.
Basically, I want to be able to create the perfect disk image of a CLEAN Ubuntu installed in a 30 gb partition. The problem is, if I install Ubuntu, then some drivers are installed automatically. I am using an old computer at the moment (my main is back at home) and I want to be able to create an image so that when I restore that image onto my main computer, it is not cluttered with drivers of the old computer. Is there a method that can be used for uninstalling drivers?
I am looking for the cleanest way to uninstall drivers, hopefully to the point where it will not leave any "residue" That is my first question. My second question (in general about disk image--I have never actually created nor restored an image): Can I create an image of partition A and restore the image on partition B? Basically, creating an image of one partition and restoring it on another partition. Or does it have to be restored on the original partition?
Also, what if it is the same scenario but partition B is a larger size? I know that if partition B is smaller, it cannot be done because the image is larger than the partition. Finally, can partition A be restored onto a different hard drive? I have yet to find answers of these questions on different forums in other sites (this is my 3rd try). I know that the Ubuntu community is extremely active and more than willing to share their knowledge.
When I created the disk, I specified dynamically growth, but when I tried to copy a file larger than the available disk space (500MB), a message showed up saying that it couldn't be done.

I need to expand a 15GB xen disk ".img" to 50GB, it's got centos as the guest O/S.
I've been googling and there are alot of results but I'm still having trouble.
I don't remember if I used the default LVM partition scheme or if I did a FS. In fdisk it says linux partition but that's it.
I did the dd and cat method but fsck is complaining like usual.
I dd a file called tempfile and the append it using cat tempfile >> my.img then did resize2fs -f but it error out with "Bad Magic number on super block."
Ok, so I have installed openSUSE 11.3 on my Lenovo Thinkpad T61p, setup the wireless adapter (why is this so difficult?) and installed a few applications. I do like the look of openSUSE but would like to check out a few other flavours. With my Windows 7 (can I say that here?) machines I can create a system image and a system restore CD with a fair amount of ease. Is there a similar process available for Linux?
