Ubuntu :: Restoring From A Root.disk File?

I was using Ubuntu, installed over Wubi in WindowsXP. Due to some hard disk issues, I was having some problems booting into Windows. But Ubuntu was working fine. So i backed up all my data from Ubuntu and somehow managed to back up the 'root.disk' from Windows.That hard disk turned out to have some bad sectors. Now I am over a new hard disk with all my data and WindowsXP freshly installed. I want to have my old copy of Ubuntu back as I have the 'root.disk' file with me. How shall I proceed?I tried installing a fresh copy of Ubuntu using Wubi and then replace the 'root.disk' file. But it showed some Grub error.

I'm running out of space in wubi. Online wubi help didn't help much since they suggest creating extra virtual disk space(similar to having a diffrent partition i guess) .None of them speak about increasing the size of /root disk space(or root.disk). I store all files in space shared with windows or external disk and use ubuntu only to install and use softwares and browsing. So how do increase the available space for installing more softwares?

I was trying to install Ubuntu desktop and laptop edition on a Sony Vaio netbook from a USB drive, but after I select the entire disk to be used and hit enter I get this message No root file system is defined. correct this from the partitioning menu. If I try to start windows I just get s black screen.

I have this 1 TB HDD , which had a single NTFS partition. I was planning to repartition it using my Mac OSX Disk Utility( my blunder). Once I did the reparitioning disk utility ran for like 8 hrs for reparition of 120 Gigs. After seeing no status after 8 hrs , I just plugged it out.After that am not able to use my HDD seems this wretched utilit has screwed thepartition table. Needless to say this 1 TB contains my 10 years of life time.Till now I have done :Used R3cover to recover partition table: No luckUsed Stellar for Mac : NO luck( this tool ran for 36 hrs before shouting No Data Found!!)Am runnig Test Disk: Interesting tool ran for 30 hrs and asked me to do a deep search now its been running for 2 days with status showing 50% usageThe status shows some 20 Linux parition, 1 Swap parition and 1 unknown partition.As Far as I know I never created any Liux partition.

Information on the net seems very sparse or outdated for how to go about booting to a RAM disk. I need to be be able to boot a PC without a hard drive in it. I want to be able to PXE boot a PC and supply it with a RAM disk image that also contains the contents of the root file system (obviously stripped down enough to keep the file size small and the boot up time fast).What I have gathered so far is that I need to extract the contents of the initrd.img file, add files as necessary, and repackage the initrd.img file. What I get confused on is how to configure the kernel line parameters to tell it to boot to RAM and not the hard drive and how to go about modifying the init script in the initrd.img to not switch to the hard drive for the root file system. I can't find anything on the net that describes concrete steps on how to go about accomplishing all of this. I'm aware of the existence of Live CD's, but I need to be able to boot the PC without relying on a hard drive, CD, or any other external media. It needs to get all of its contents from the PXE boot server and boot to RAM only. I have the PXE boot side configured successfully. Also, putting the root file system on a NFS share is also out of the question.

I have Debian 6 (squeeze), I have also seen this under Ubuntu (can not remember how I fixed it). (has worked in ubuntu 10.10)I can hibernate, but when I switch on the system cold boots (it does not restore previous session).Note suspend works fine. Have looked in /var/log/pm-suspend.log Shows for each block of suspend suspend a block of resume suspend, but hibernate hibernate is not followed by resume hibernate ( I assume that is what is expected.)

There isn't any separate file system for /home and we have only one (/) root file system for everything else on the system. Is there any way that we can still implement quotas for users through their home directories was mounted on (/) root file system. Do we need to have a separate file system (/home) compulsory for implementing disk quotas?

I worked everyday during 1.5 years on a Wubi installation of Ubuntu 8.10.
Before quitting my job I have made a simple copy of the root.disk file, thinking I could restore it easily later.
Now I would restore this system on a Virtual Machine (with Virtual Box)
Have you got an idea how i could do this??
(I already tryied to install another wubi on a virtualized Windows 7, the install complete but I can't see ubuntu in the boot loader...)

I am looking for an Open Source software making it possible to make a disk image of an Ubuntu installation as well as a Windows XP installation.I have checked out Clonezilla which almost solved the problem. However, the disk to which you restore needs to be the same size or bigger. I want to restore the whole thingo a smaller disk than the original.I am considering getting myself an SSD disk which will be considerably smaller than the 160 gb disk I have right now. I need it to work for Windows as well. Unfortunately I can't get rid of Windows quite yet I often participate in webinars on GotoWebinar and they do not support Linux ...

After freshly installing Lucid Lynx and tinkering for some time to get everything just how I like it, I managed to somehow remove myself and all other users from all groups. Now, obviously, I've restarted and I don't have root privileges as I am no longer a member of admin group. So I am somewhat stuck. I've looked at this page: [URL]. But annoyingly, there is no grub menu appearing on boot up (unlike previous Ubuntu versions). So I'm appealing for your help to either:
a) Show me how I can bring up the grub menu so I can access ubuntu in safe mode
b) Show me another way of accessing the system with root privileges. (Would using chroot from the Live CD work? I just thought of that now so I'll try it).

I did a backup of /photos /documents /downloads and /music with mintbackup creating backup on /dev/sdb1
I cannot get mintbackup to restore the file, and I was able finally to get /music file restored. Below is error from cli

I've been using 11.04 Unity, & quite like it. I fired up Blender 2.49b the other day (not used it for a long time) & its behaviour was very erratic. Due to this I decided to reinstall 10.10 for the time being, until October or maybe even the 12.04 LTS. I backed everything up & reinstalled 10.10. I then tried to restore my Evolution from the Natty backup file, which simply didn't work. The message was something about it not being a valid file. I'm assuming this is a non backwards compatibility issue.
Any way getting Blender to work or restoring Evolution? With regard to Blender (in Natty); I've not tried proprietary drivers for my GPU yet as the open source defaults have always been fine, so that's an option. It means another reinstall (of Natty), but that really isn't such a big deal at this point. With regard to Evolution (in Maverick); I found a ppa but I'm unsure how to proceed once I've added it. Would I do an apt-get update & an apt-get install evolution?

I turned my laptop in for repairs. I used someone else's USB drive to hold my pictures etc from that computer. I may have replaced the "pictures" folder tat was already on there, but I'm not sure if it was there in the first place. (Doesn't remember the "Are you sure you want to replace..." warning <.< >.>) I enabled hidden files, and there was a folder called .Trashes, instead of what you'd normally get. I copied my pictures onto my desktop, and then cleared the ones on the USB drive (left the folder). There was a folder named .000Trash-, or whatever it usually is. Only my pictures are in there. I'm confused, and don't tell me the pictures that were originally on the USB are gone forever.There's a tool for Windows, called Glary's Uilities that can get them back, supposedly. Not running windows, though

Okay, onto the problem...I've decided to give openbox a try with Debian testing. I set up my right-click menu exactly how I want it, and everything else is set up perfectly.I installed trayer and tint2, along with nitrogen. I added the following lines to my ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh file, but things aren't loading/restoring as they should. Tint2 and trayer don't load at all, and nitrogen isn't restoring my wallpaper. All I get is a black screen with my cursor, but the ability to right-click and open the menu, so it's not like X is dead. I did set the default wallpaper by issuing the command nitrogen /home/john/Pictures/Wallpapers, where "Wallpapers" contains all of my background images.

i have amd athlon x2 3gb RAM ddr2 two hdd one 80gb other 1tb in this computer i got only ubuntu all disk in EXT4.i want to copy 10gb many file of 700mb or 1gb ( many linux ISO )the transfer is 1mb/s this is SOOO SLOW.i did a touch /forcefsck just in case but nothing happen it is still slow!!what might be the problem ??

the terminal and logged in as root i was changing file permissions and happened to change the root folder to 700. Now my icons have gone and i can't even access the terminal.
I was just wondering if it is possible to go to rescue mode using the cd and restore all the appropriate file permissions to root/ users if possible

So I had a problem with my ubuntu 10.04 on wubi. so i saved the root.disk and uninstalled it then reinstalled unbuntu 10.04 as another partition. I did the mount thing with the root.disk and now and trying to move files over. I need permission for that and its asking me for a sudo password and i didnt set one. i tried using sudo bash and its also not working.

I can't mount my Ubuntu partition. I was using my PC when it suddenly crashed, so I rebooted. When Ubuntu started again, it said that it was mounting, but I rebooted again. So, now when I start it tries to mount the main partition but it can't. Then appears <initramfs> and I don't know what to do.

I applying changes through update manager in ubuntu 10.04 then my computer froze. So I had to restart it manually.
Now I can't boot ubuntu normal or recovery mode.I get an error message saying 'the disk drive / is not ready yet or blah blah'.I don't have a livecd to fix it this with... but here is my 'cat /etc/fstab' relevant output

I've downloaded Ubuntu 8.10 and I have installed it within ms windows. My first problem was when I went to boot Ubuntu and the graphics weren't right so I rebooted it with a different graphic configuration and it installed successfully. When I went to boot Ubuntu a second time to actually use it I got the following error:

Running RHEL 5 in a VMWare image, needed to add a second virtual disk, which worked fine - added it in VMWare, used fdisk and mkfs to format and mounted it as /SI50 so I could then access it. Did all this as root of course. Now I have created a new user and when I log in not only do I not see the new drive, but if I try and mount the drive I get an error "only root can do that". I absolutely have to see this drive as this new user so mounting it only for root to see is no good at all. I'm sure I'm fundamentally doing something wrong here, because obviously the way drives appear in Linux is completely different to windows.
