Ubuntu :: Resolution Changes After Restart?
May 3, 2010I set my resolution to 1680 x 1050 via the vendor's tool and I even saved it to the X config file but every time I restart it's set back to 1280 x 1024.

View 1 Repliesi just restarted because of some problems and as i booted, the ubuntu logo with the load thing was looking different and errors appeared under the logo. The resolution is 1024x786, but it was way higher before. When i click on System/Preferences/Monitors it says "It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead? y/n" I have a broken package: sun-java6-jre, is it because of that?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble with x11...when I restart my laptop, the screen resolution is always reset to 1024x768. I set the resolution to the appropriate 1280x800 and everything is fine for that session, until I restart or re-login. Then the screen is reset back to 1024x768. Saving the x configuration file after resetting the resolution doesn't help. I'm using Nvidia's "Current Version" in the Addtional Drivers and making changes qwith "Nvidia X Server Settings".
Ubuntu 11.04 MacBook Pro 7.1
I just did a clean install from Ubuntu 8.04 LTS to Ubuntu 9.10. I went to System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers to enable any drivers (mainly for my graphics card so I could run higher resolutions). Had two driver, one for my wireless network interface card and one for my graphics card (NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200). I enabled the drivers restarted and went to System -> Administration -> NVIDIA X Server Settings. The resolution was set to "Auto", which is 1280 x 1024 (max.) on my old CRT.
I've ran that resolution for a day now and it isn't as snappy as I'd like it to be (or as the exact same resolution was on 8.04). So I reverted back to 1024 x 768. Everything seems to be running as I'd hope under the lower resolution. The only problem I am running into now is when I restart NVIDIA X Server Settings changes back to "Auto" and automatically switches to 1280 x 1024. I've clicked "Save X Configuration File" thinking that might help retain the resolution I want after startup, but it just says "Failed to parse existing X config file '/etc/x11/xorg.confg'!"
How do I get my resolution to stay at 1024 x 768 after a restart?
I've just bought a new monitor - Viewsonic VA2213w and am trying to set it up with Lucid. The resolution required is 1920x1080 @ 60Hz. I have an NVidia GTS250 with the proprietary driver v195.36.24 installed. I can set the right resolution in the nvidia-settings app, but it will not survive a restart. X always reverts to 1024x768. I have manually edited xorg.conf now to try to force the mode. The GDM login screen displays at the correct resolution, but on logging in X changes the resolution. Xorg.0.log shows the resolution being correctly set to 1920x1080 initially, then right at the end for some reason it is reset to 1024x768.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Fedora 14 KDE and NVIDIA proprietary driver for GeForce FX 5200. I'm able to change the resolution to 1920x1080 (Acer H213H 21.5" lcd monitor), but when I restart the box, I lose these settings and I have to fiddle with NVIDIA and KDE monitor settings until I get the settings back.
Here is my xorg.conf file:
Code:
Is this (in)correct? What else can I try in order to keep my resolution at 1920x1080? When I restart, it reverts to 640x480.
I didn't have this problem before installing NVIDIA driver, however, I had visual anomalies and slowness in video refresh/repaint whenever moving windows. I don't want to go back to that so I'd like to see how to permanently propagate my resolution settings through reboots of this box. I've search multiple forums with no relevant hits as far as I was able to discern.
I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)
"name@name-desktop:...$ "
I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.
I have a suspend problem in my laptop. Sometimes, when resuming from suspend, the network adapter is down (that is, the network does not work and the light of the network adapter is off). Restarting the network service doesn't work, because I think that the system forgot about the hardware, and probably the driver should be reloaded.Does anyone knows how to do that?(ps. /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work, because the hardware driver is not being recognized anymore).

Whenever I choose "Restart" from the GDM screen, GDM appears to shutdown, and the first TTY is displayed with a login prompt at the bottom (assuming I haven't used that TTY). I am by no estimation a patient individual, but I waited a solid minute or two for something to happen, but nothing ever did. I end up logging in as root on that TTY and running "shutdown -r now" to get the job done. This is a shared computer, and ideally any user should be able to perform shutdown options graphically from GDM.The only mentioned workaround doesn't apply to me as I am using the nvidia driver, not intel.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI searched the archives and didn't find anything on this, and was just wondering if there is a problem if you load Ubuntu 9.1 and have a display that's higher than 1024x768. I'd prefer a machine with a higher res, but I've heard that Ubuntu will only go as high as 1024x768.I'm guessing, however, that by 9.1, it should recog the higher res while loading and it won't be a problem, but thought I'd check before shelling out on a machine with a nicer display.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI was evaluating a live distro on a USB drive and the resolution got changed from my normal 1680X1050 to 1024X768. I normally run SuperOS (ubuntu derivative) at 1680X1050 on my 22" LCD flatscreen monitor. The users manual for the monitor says that the optimum resolution is 1680X1050. Now when I go to system, preferences, monitors the monitor is unknown and the highest resolution that is available is 1360X768. I have clicked on Detect Monitors but not sure anything is happening. I have went to system, administration, additional drivers but none show up. The OSD menu for the monitor is showing 1380X768. I haven't been able to make any changes to the setting. I push the button that is supposed to get me into the sub-menu but nothing happens.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have googled this and I refuse to believe the answer is "older video card" or "ubuntu". Does anyone know what boot parameters to use or how to get Fedora to start the install process in a resolution other than the "Optimum resolution"? resolution=640x40 vga=ask. These do not work. They set the debug display but when the graphical portion starts it defaults to the "optimum resolution" and the message displays "Cannot Display This Video Mode". As you consider the answer, think this is a new computer, blank hard disk, etc. I am installing Fedora 10. Tried 11 and Vista seems less buggy, prefer 10 or 9.

I've tried using '/etc/init.d/gdm restart' and that tells me to use 'service gdm restart' but that forces me to log back in again.I wouldn't mind having to start gnome using startx, then logout of x and startx again but I need to automate the process. I can't figure it out because anything I launch withing gnome gets killed when gnome goes down so that the startx part doesn't get executed

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a recently new, less than 2 weeks old, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installl. It is a clean install since the prior install of 10.04 LTS decided it would no longer allow me to login.
My problem is that I cannot shutdown or restart my machine. And I have no idea why it happened.
I'm having problems trying to restart gdm from crontab and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Basically what I want to do is a 'logout' every morning before I get to work so that by the time I get to my computer I would just have to log back in and have a fresh gnome session.
The command I'm using to restart gdm is:
Code:
/usr/sbin/service gdm restart
If I run this command from a terminal as root it works.
To edit my crontab file I'm doing:
Code:
sudo crontab -u root -e
And adding the following line to it:
Code:
25 08 * * 1-5 /usr/sbin/service gdm restart
My understanding is that this should restart gdm every day of the work week (Mon-Fri) at 08:25. But for some reason this is not happening.
I also checked that my cron deamon is running by:
Code:
~$ service gdm status
gdm start/running, process 27156
I don't remember when it started, my ubuntu hang when trying to shut down.I tried every possible way to shut down, by command, poweroff, reboot, halt and In verbose mode the last message is: Code: init: rc main process ((process id e.g. "26350")) killed by TERM single and only way I have, to turn off is "Alt + Ctrl + delete"... and when I press them this message appear for a while then restart.
