Ubuntu :: Screen Resolution Not Appropriate On Restart

I'm having trouble with x11...when I restart my laptop, the screen resolution is always reset to 1024x768. I set the resolution to the appropriate 1280x800 and everything is fine for that session, until I restart or re-login. Then the screen is reset back to 1024x768. Saving the x configuration file after resetting the resolution doesn't help. I'm using Nvidia's "Current Version" in the Addtional Drivers and making changes qwith "Nvidia X Server Settings".

Every time I restart my computer the screen resolution changes back. I've recently started to use XFCE, it didn't do it in GNOME. what can I do to make it stay the same?

I set my resolution to 1680 x 1050 via the vendor's tool and I even saved it to the X config file but every time I restart it's set back to 1280 x 1024.

i just restarted because of some problems and as i booted, the ubuntu logo with the load thing was looking different and errors appeared under the logo. The resolution is 1024x786, but it was way higher before. When i click on System/Preferences/Monitors it says "It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead? y/n" I have a broken package: sun-java6-jre, is it because of that?

I just did a clean install from Ubuntu 8.04 LTS to Ubuntu 9.10. I went to System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers to enable any drivers (mainly for my graphics card so I could run higher resolutions). Had two driver, one for my wireless network interface card and one for my graphics card (NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200). I enabled the drivers restarted and went to System -> Administration -> NVIDIA X Server Settings. The resolution was set to "Auto", which is 1280 x 1024 (max.) on my old CRT.
I've ran that resolution for a day now and it isn't as snappy as I'd like it to be (or as the exact same resolution was on 8.04). So I reverted back to 1024 x 768. Everything seems to be running as I'd hope under the lower resolution. The only problem I am running into now is when I restart NVIDIA X Server Settings changes back to "Auto" and automatically switches to 1280 x 1024. I've clicked "Save X Configuration File" thinking that might help retain the resolution I want after startup, but it just says "Failed to parse existing X config file '/etc/x11/xorg.confg'!"
How do I get my resolution to stay at 1024 x 768 after a restart?

I've just bought a new monitor - Viewsonic VA2213w and am trying to set it up with Lucid. The resolution required is 1920x1080 @ 60Hz. I have an NVidia GTS250 with the proprietary driver v195.36.24 installed. I can set the right resolution in the nvidia-settings app, but it will not survive a restart. X always reverts to 1024x768. I have manually edited xorg.conf now to try to force the mode. The GDM login screen displays at the correct resolution, but on logging in X changes the resolution. Xorg.0.log shows the resolution being correctly set to 1920x1080 initially, then right at the end for some reason it is reset to 1024x768.

I recently installed Fedora 14 KDE and NVIDIA proprietary driver for GeForce FX 5200. I'm able to change the resolution to 1920x1080 (Acer H213H 21.5" lcd monitor), but when I restart the box, I lose these settings and I have to fiddle with NVIDIA and KDE monitor settings until I get the settings back.

Is this (in)correct? What else can I try in order to keep my resolution at 1920x1080? When I restart, it reverts to 640x480.
I didn't have this problem before installing NVIDIA driver, however, I had visual anomalies and slowness in video refresh/repaint whenever moving windows. I don't want to go back to that so I'd like to see how to permanently propagate my resolution settings through reboots of this box. I've search multiple forums with no relevant hits as far as I was able to discern.

Before I upgrade to 10.4 It would be nice to find the best solution to this problem. I use a KVM switch that dont pass the EDID info from the screen to the OS. To solve this, that is, to get the correct screen resolution, i need to pass monitor and screen info to the OS at every startup. One way is to ad a script to /etc/gdm/init/default, or in KDE /etc/kde4/kdm/Xsetup.

I recently upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 7600GS to a Gefore 560Ti. And while most things are normal, during boot up my screen isn't "full screen" until X is started, after which everything else is fine. Essentially, all display, the grub menu, the splash screen, console text, etc, is within a box on the screen, with 2" on the left and right, and 1" top and bottom of empty blackness.
From what I understand, this is because the framebuffer is using the wrong resolution, but the maximum resolution that hwinfo --framebuffer returns is 1280x1024 (which I am already using "0x031a".) (My monitors is natively 1920x1080) Is it possible to do something about this? If not increase resolution than at least stretch the screen to full screen?

i have just put a Geforce 7300 GT graphic card into my machine the problem is the max resolution I can get is 1024x768 at 60 hz the screen is a benq fp71g+. also the screen goes blank when i click on the display icon in system settings. i know that the screen can be run at 1280x1024 so I don?t know where the problem is.

Unfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.
The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.
So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.
I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue

So I tried to install ubuntu 10.04 on my 5 year old gateway laptop but the screen kept going blank when ubuntu was booting up. I was able to get to the menu screen and add "i915.modeset=1" after "quiet splash", which allowed ubuntu to load. I installed it on the hard drive successfully, but when I restarted the computer, it won't load again. I don't know how to fix this so I can run it from the hard drive.

10.04 runs perfectly most of the time, then every once-in-awhile it crashes. The screen goes black and I have to restart. I had a similar problem with 9.10, so I reverted back to 8.04 which never crashed. I did a fresh install of 10.04.

i have Ubuntu 11.4 on my net-book and everything has been nice and good since its release and i really have been enjoying it until recently.... It seems as if for some unknown reason while i am using ubuntu my monitor would go dark with a message at the top with something along the lines of:Batter meter check [OK]after a few seconds of the screen like this Ubuntu would crash and go strait to the login screen as if i had just turned on my computer... This is a very serious problem for i am a student who types alot of essays and needs a reliable computer.

I recently installed ubuntu on my PC. The installation went fine without any errors but ubuntu won't start up. The first weird thing I noticed after installing was it asked me to restart my computer. So I did so by clicking the "restart now" button but my computer never shut off. The monitor did but the pc itself did not. I manually restarted the computer myself and when it got the point of starting up Ubuntu all it showed was some white boxes and some text I couldn't really see and the screen just went blank. I waited for a while and nothing happened. The only way I'm able to write this is because I'm on the trial of Ubuntu. I installed the latest version of Ubuntu by the way...

Have tried to install 10.04 from a cd sent to me by ubuntu. lts on an x-windows medion pc mt7 (med mt 345). Previously comp. was running windows xp pro. After pressing restart at end of install process I get nothing! Black screen, no mouse control , no keyboard control, nothing at all.
Have tried putting cd in again but get nothing, on pressing restart the cd was politely ejected. Have tried rebooting a few times but get no response. Everything is switched on. So now I cannot even get a terminal up, the only thing I am fairly certain about is that the computer is sending a signal to the screen as there is Not a "no signal" message.

I had a working ubuntu 8.04.x system. I ran the update manager to upgrade to 10.04.1 LTS. Everything seemed to run fine up to the point where it needed a restart. Upon restart, it spews out a stream of log messages, changes the font of the log messages already displayed, and then the screen goes blank and the system does not respond to keyboard or mouse. It appears as if the system is trying to set up the monitor and messes up.
If I ESC into grub after BIOS boot, I have the option of booting two different kernels: 2.6.32-27-generic and 2.6.24-28-generic. The original ubuntu 8.04 kernel was 2.6.24-24-generic(though I did do some updates might that be the 24-28 kernel?).
Booting the 32-27 kernel results in the behavior described above.
Booting the 24-28 kernel produces a stream of log messages that scroll past to fast to read and drops into ash. One of the last messages is: !ALERT /dev/disk/by-uuid/ xxxxxx does not exist -which is true because there is very little in the /dev directory.

Computer was working alright, no one was really using it anymore so I decided to reformat it and install Ubuntu. The whole install process went through but when I restarted the computer it was all glitchy and anything that came on screen would disappear after an instant and then come back. Makes reading anything extremely hard. Realized I only have 256 MB of RAM which is probably a big problem which I understand but I need a solution to fix this. Any older versions of ubuntu or other linux distributions that I should try?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 (and, on another server, 10.10) and can't seem to figure out how to remove the Shutdown and Restart options from the menu on the bottom right of the login screen.
I've tried
Code: gksudo -u gdm dbus-launch gconf-editor and checking the /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_restart_buttons, but it doesn't do anything even after a reboot. I've also tried the above command as root (without the "-u gdm").
I have also tried adding the following lines to /etc/gdm/custom.conf:
Code: RebootCommand= ShutdownCommand= These seem to have no effect either. Is this a Gnome bug, or am I doing something wrong?

so I have Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell inspiron 1150 and I wanted to upgrade to 10.04. I do the upgrade with the update manager and it dose all the installing. It restarts and goes to the purple screen with the white and red dots for about a minute, then it goes to a blank screen and sits there. i let it sit over night and it still didn't do anything! I've tried booting from CD and it dose the same thing! its bugging the heck out of me!

i just installed 10.04.1 and have done a quick apt-get update/apt-get upgrade.the problem is i'm running a 1920 x 1080 display using a geforce gtx460, yet the screen is cropped in at 1280 x 1024. i have the option to go lower only.i first tried to install the nvidia binary in the old-fashioned way of (system > administration > hardware drivers) but this reported that there are no proprietary drivers in use and there was no option to 'switch one on'.i guess my hardware is too new so i want to install the drivers available at nvidia's website (256.44). this adds support for my gpu.
i tried to install these by exiting x but this just resulted in some sort of system hang. the function keys on my keyboard seem to be 'non-functional' too, making a ctrl+alt+f1 not do what it should. i think this may be a problem with the mac keyboard i'm using.is this just a waiting game? can i get into a virtual console somehow else (perhaps during bootup)? is there a way i can exit x without the system hang? is there another way of installing some workable drivers? should i be altering my xorg.conf?

I have a custom PC with a (nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x] (rev c1)) graphics card and a 17" Compaq MV720 CRT monitor. My graphics card/monitor combination is capable of resolutions up to 1280 X 1024.
I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 64Bit, and the highest resolution available at Sysytem>Preferences>Monitors>Resolution: is 1024 X 768. I want to get the resolution up to 1152 X 864, which the card/monitor is capable of. I looked around the forum for a solution, but couldn't find a thread that explains exactly what I want to do. In the most previous version of Ubuntu that I used (9.10), I could generate an xorg.conf with Xorg, grab the (Monitor, Device, and Screen) sections, and use that with a few changes to create an xorg.conf to get the resolutions that I wanted. In 10.10, that no longer works. In fact, it won't even work without the changes. After placing the xorg.conf in /etc/X11, the PC will only boot up to a text CLI prompt to login. No GUI desktop.
My PC is a totally orthodox desktop, no dual boot, no Virtualbox. What do I have to do to get the resolutions above 1024 X 768?

I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop, only to find I only have low resolution problem. I got my system info and it's:

All the tutorials tell me to try and use xorg, with commands like:

I upgraded all xserver-xorg packages in my notebook. After restart system Xorg (GDM) don't run. My screen is black. If I will go to console CTRL+ALT+FX, screen is black too. I will go to console only in single-mode and I tried run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, but without results. I haven't got /etc/X11/xorg.conf in my system. I have got integrated Intel graphics card.

I have a small question for you my friends."HOW CAN STOP BOOT SCREE AND RESTART ,WHAT KEYS ARE NEED?"I want to say thisC starts and I want to stop in whatever one point to read the messsage ,especially when I see "failed".I have 2 points with failed I can't have enough time because it's going fast.Of course I read the boot messages from /var/log but they are too long and to be honest evan I used in "gedit" the option "find" to search of raws with "failed" I can find some ,but other not.That's I think when PC start and if I can stop/PAUSE the boot process using some key combination I note and after I cancel "PAUSE" and PC continue the booting process.

I'm having problems adjusting my screen resolution. I'm using Nvidia Geforce FX5300 video card and Samsung T220P LCD screen with resolution of 1920x1200. After installing the Nvidia driver I went to system -> preferences -> display in order to change the resolution to 1920x1200. Unfortunately, the available resolutions were only 640x480 and 320x240. I tried to set the resolution manually, using the advanced button, but when I did this everything was extremely big on my screen.
