Ubuntu :: Restart Gnome W/o Having To Log In Again?
Apr 19, 2010
Does anyone know how I can restart gnome from the command line without having to log in again(as in selecting a user and typing in the password)? I've tried using '/etc/init.d/gdm restart' and that tells me to use 'service gdm restart' but that forces me to log back in again.I wouldn't mind having to start gnome using startx, then logout of x and startx again but I need to automate the process. I can't figure it out because anything I launch withing gnome gets killed when gnome goes down so that the startx part doesn't get executed

I'm doing a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 on a new SSD. All seems to go well, did all the updates. Computer rebooted numerous times without a hitch. Here's the problem...soon as I turn the computer off and restart it, I can no longer get to the desktop.I'm presented with a prompt. I can login but startx and gdm wasn't the ticket.

Recently I tried to install calibre ebook management software from the Ubuntu Software center and it installed fine as expected, ran fine from the applications menu as expected (for the initial run) went through the wizard and clicked next. All of a sudden I was presented with a login prompt. I thought I must have hit a hot key accidentally, so I logged in and it restarted fresh not like the desktop was locked. So I ran calibre again and it did the same thing. I uninstalled calibre and went about compiling from source, after all of the dependencies were met and it compiled and installed ran it again and it logged me out again.
System:
Ubuntu 10.10
Kernel 2.6.35-25-generic
Gnome 2.32.0
Memory 1GB
Pentium 4 2.6ghz

I'm running openSUSE 11.2 Gnome Desktop Environment. Whenever I try to either shutdown or restart my machine as a "normal user", I've been logged off instead! When I try to re-login the screen (xorg) freezes. I don't know how to debug this problem. The problem could be related to hal or d-bus or policykit or X-org..... simply I don't know. N.B. I can shutdown and restart my machine only as "super-user" (root).

I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)
"name@name-desktop:...$ "
I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.

I have a suspend problem in my laptop. Sometimes, when resuming from suspend, the network adapter is down (that is, the network does not work and the light of the network adapter is off). Restarting the network service doesn't work, because I think that the system forgot about the hardware, and probably the driver should be reloaded.Does anyone knows how to do that?(ps. /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work, because the hardware driver is not being recognized anymore).

Whenever I choose "Restart" from the GDM screen, GDM appears to shutdown, and the first TTY is displayed with a login prompt at the bottom (assuming I haven't used that TTY). I am by no estimation a patient individual, but I waited a solid minute or two for something to happen, but nothing ever did. I end up logging in as root on that TTY and running "shutdown -r now" to get the job done. This is a shared computer, and ideally any user should be able to perform shutdown options graphically from GDM.The only mentioned workaround doesn't apply to me as I am using the nvidia driver, not intel.

whats the difference between restarting/stopping apache using 'service httpd restart/stop' and apachectl restart/stop. I know that using 'service httpd restart' is actually a script in /etc/init.d/httpd but what about apachectl?

Older machine here that I upgraded to 10.04 after a clean install of 9.10 some months ago. When booting into GNOME, the desktop image flashes on the screen and the second the bars on top and bottom try to appear the system boots out of the desktop and returns to the log on screen. I assume this is a crash of Xserver, but just guessing. Per another page I ran: lspci | grep VGAand returned:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. KM400/KN400/P4M800 [S3 UniChrome] (rev 01)
I know - old machine Typing this from failsafe mode, would be great to hear from someone as to what I can do to get this working in normal mode again.

I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell GX240. I have severe difficulty logging in. If I try to login on GNOME or GNOME fail safe mode , I just cant get in . I keep getting the login screen again. I am able to go into terminal mode. Sometimes I have to try upto 100 times to login in GNOME or failsafe mode. Once I am in everything is fine. Is there a way to do some troublshooting? Also transfer to USB sticks is very slow - sometimes as slow as 1MB per min. Is this normal with Ubuntu?

I've installed Ubuntu 10.4 and the gnome-panel appears half, as you can see in the attached picture, if I try resolutions over 1024x768.If I kill the gnome-panel and it restarts, or if I change its properties, it became OK, but in startup it appears like the image.I've tried other Gnome 2.3 based distributions and occurs the same issue. With Gnome 2.28 it doesn't occurs. Then ii seems a gnome 2.3 problem.
PD: My grafic card is a Matrox G550.

I'm currently building a ubuntu distro and would like to run a script on GNOME startup. I've read about doing it through the session manager but I have to do it through chroot so I'll need to set it up as a terminal command. Is there a way to add an item to the Session Manager from terminal or, even better, a directory where I can put the script so it will run on start?

I have avant-window-navigator in my startup appplications. This apparently causes gnome to use the Gnome icon theme on boot, instead of the Humanity theme I selected in Preferences->Appearance. I just have to go to Preferences-Appearance again to get the Humanity theme back to work (I don't even have to change any settings, just going there is enough.) When I remove awn from my startup applications, this problem doesn't occur.

I am coming from about 3 months of Ubuntu/Kubuntu and have learned quite a lot from it and am looking into other linux distros, now I haven't installed Fedora yet, but I have a few questions about it, I have a acer aspire one netbook, how well does Fedora support netbooks (e.g small screens)?
I have a verizon usb760 internet modem (I'm pretty sure it's 3G), will it work "out of the box" with Fedora Graphically wise, what are the differences between gnome/kde in Fedora, than in gnome/kde in Ubuntu? How stable is Fedora 14? I have a 8gb flash drive that I want to put Fedora on to install it rather than a cd, will that work? And the last, does Fedora have a live cd feature like Ubuntu so I can try it before I install?

Please excuse my ignorance, but I need to get it straight. I've been reading and trying to find out more about these three new desktop environments, but still am rather confused. I have had Unity on my netbook for a couple of months now and know it inside out (more or less by now). The problem is: what is the main difference between Gnome 3 and Gnome Shell?
To my understanding Gnome 3 will be a continuation of the panelled Gnome we are so used to? But then I read the panels will be gone forever, so I'm confused again Gnome Shell is somewhat similar-looking to Unity, but I haven't had a chance to try it properly yet.

Seeing this on two systems that went through F13-F14 upgrade.
version: gnome-applets-2.32.0-1.fc14.x86_64
symptom: via right click on a gnome panel, perform "add to panel" and choose Dwell Click.
Gnome panel bites the dust with SIGSEGV at this point, restarts, and then you've got dwell click on the panel.
Anyone else seeing this, and better yet, have a solution?

Against all advice in Centos docs, I built and installed several gnome packages in order to upgrade to the latest Gnumeric. Among them were: fontconfig, pango, gtk+, cairo, glib. goffice, pixman, tiff, and atk. Afterwards, I got missing fonts with some apps, but the biggest problem is interference with my Vmware Workstation GUIs. Yesterday I removed all the libraries I installed hoping to recover. Now things are better, but when I open a terminal on the desktop it opens jammed in the upper-left corner with the top grab bar out of reach of the mouse. Before I remove the ~/.gnome* directories, how to restore things?

is there some wiki page on GNOME or Fedora that list which graphics cards work without problems on Fedora 15 with GNOME Shell? I have tried 3 older cards and they all failed, so I would like to share this info with others so people know which cards to avoid if they want to use full features of GNOME 3 via GNOME Shell.
