Ubuntu :: No Sound And No Shutdown/restart Options?

May 3, 2010

This is a really weird issue. I'm using 10.04 and on occasion when I boot into Ubuntu the sound doesn't work along with losing the ability to shutdown via the menu. When I click shutdown it just logs out. I need to shut down my PC by using the terminal.

It's strange because the sound and shutdown work as expected most of the time. The issue is seemingly random.

Ubuntu :: Suddenly Unable To Shutdown Or Restart 10.04

May 21, 2010

I installed 10.04 on my old Dell Inspiron 600m laptop. After using it for about an hour, I was suddenly had no option to shutdown or restart the system when logged in on the main and only account. The 'Shut Down' applet on my bar was greyed out and the shutdown option was missing from the system menu.

I removed the 'Shut Down" applet and was unable to re-add it afterwards (wasn't a selection when adding to panel). If I log off, selecting shutdown or restart from the login screen does nothing.

'Sudo shutdown now' will shut it down, though it won't power the system off; it just hangs on an all-white screen.

I saw other posts suggesting Open Office Quickstart was the culprit, though I am not running this.

Ubuntu :: See Console Text On Restart/shutdown?

Aug 4, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 on an IBM Thinkpad T60, when I try to Logoff, Restart, or Shutdown the system just goes to a black screen and I'm forced to do a hard reset to restart the system. I did a reinstall and things seemed to be working fine until I applied updates and reloaded my package list from my previous install then I got the same conditions as before. I suspect that this my be a result of a bad package or update. What I want to know is if their is a way to display console text of the shutdown process so I can see where the system hangs and possibly remove the problem application. I have an AMD 64 bit desktop running with the same package lists and have no issues I suspect it is a hardware specific issue for the laptop or an error with a 32 bit install.

Ubuntu :: Boot Priority Change With Every Restart After Shutdown

Mar 4, 2010

Whenever I start my PC, the information of 'First Boot device' in BIOS changes from hard disk to CD-Rom. It happens with new start, I mean, if I restart my computer after resetting First boot device to hard disk, then priority does not change. Just as I switch on computer, a black screen appears with the message:
CMOS - checksum error - defaults loaded
press F1 to continue, DEL to enter setup

Recently it used to happen, that PC was not reading my hard disk containing GRUB. I have 2 hard disks. I switched the power cables of two hard disks. After that, both hard disks were shown by BIOS but the above mentioned error started appearing. Also grub takes too much time to load. It takes almost 20 seconds. Earlier I was using 'Puppy Linux'. In that, Grub was loading in fraction of second.

Ubuntu :: Installed Kubuntu Desktop And No Shutdown Or Restart In KDE

May 11, 2010

I just recently installed Kubuntu desktop onto Ubuntu and I don't have any shutdown or restart options shown in KDE, but they show up in Gnome. I initially installed Kubuntu using GDM instead of KDM and switched to KDM when I saw that my Gnome taskbars overlayed my KDE taskbars. To switch from GDM to KDM I used the following command:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm

After enabling KDM the terminal suggested a command to configure KDM, however I can't remember the command. I ran it and I got a message that KDM was already configured.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Suspend/restart/shutdown/logout Often Freezes?

Oct 21, 2010

Lenovo X200 notebook, 64bit maverick, external monitor connected through DisplayPort, fast SSD drive, encrypted homeI'm almost positive these issues were non existent after installing 10.10RC, but I'm not 100% sure. Maybe I will install it again to check it outAnyway, when I try to suspend/restart/shutdown/logout the system often freezes, showing the console with the similar output:I know this guy is running Ubuntu in VM, but I have very similar ouput, except the last usplash line. But the first line I always have in the output is the infamousQuote:GLIb-WARNING **: getpwid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)On a very rare occassion, the system hanged while booting (showing the above glib line as well. But that's quite rare, so I'm not that concerned.

Now, sometimes it does respond to ctrl+alt+delete after freezing, and after I hit this combination, another line appears (from memory):Quote:Init: rc main process killed by TERM signalChecking for running unattended-upgradesBut that's it, I cannot do anything else, only hard reset, which is especially painful when I suspend in the middle of work...There is no interesting information in the logs - a few messages in the kern.log, but nothing I think would show the culpritEDIT: other than that, the machine is very stable and I have no issues with it. It also worked perfectly on lucid 32bit.

Ubuntu :: Remove Shutdown / Restart From Login Screen?

Mar 20, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 (and, on another server, 10.10) and can't seem to figure out how to remove the Shutdown and Restart options from the menu on the bottom right of the login screen.

I've tried

Code: gksudo -u gdm dbus-launch gconf-editor and checking the /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_restart_buttons, but it doesn't do anything even after a reboot. I've also tried the above command as root (without the "-u gdm").

I have also tried adding the following lines to /etc/gdm/custom.conf:

Code: RebootCommand= ShutdownCommand= These seem to have no effect either. Is this a Gnome bug, or am I doing something wrong?

When I try to re-login the screen (xorg) freezes. I don't know how to debug this problem. The problem could be related to hal or d-bus or policykit or X-org..... simply I don't know. N.B. I can shutdown and restart my machine only as "super-user" (root).

OpenSUSE :: Cannot Shutdown Or Restart Laptop From KDE

Jan 26, 2011

I had my netbook which is an Acer AspireOne lock up on me once earlier today and after doing a hard shutdown *holding the power button* and booting it back up I noticed that I could no longer reboot the machine from KDE's graphical shutdown button. Basically I click it and it pops up with the 30 second count down and then nothing. However I can run as root,

Code:

Shutdown -r now

and it will comply and reboot. I did notice that rngd was returning an exit status 1 and after some research decided to uninstall it with no change to anything. I decided to attempt and see if it was just a KDE issue as many problems have been, but when I attempted to log into Gnome I got a very nice white screen with one black line where the taskbar should be. Whether they are related or just coincidence I don't know.

I've ran my google researching skills into the ground on this one and I'm tired and a bit grumpy because I haven't been sleeping so it'd be awesome if I could get a heads up, because to my knowledge it's not reporting any errors it just seems to hang without sending the shutdown signals.

Software :: Firefox Will Not Restart After Shutdown?

Apr 21, 2010

A few days ago an upgrade to FF 3.6.3 was pushed at me by Mandriva. I accepted it, of course.

Since then, firefox refuses to restart after a shutdown, and there are no error messages in any log or in the bash window if I try to start it that way.

I tried a couple of times to uninstall/reinstall it, but no joy.

Finally figured out that if I reloaded the .mozilla directory in my home directory from a daily backup, FF would restart.

This suggests that FF 3.6.3 is corrupting something either while it is running or when it shuts down.

It's pretty consistent, and makes it rather hard to use FF. The lack of error messages is making it rather difficult to sort out.
