I installed LXDE in Ubuntu, and this caused the installation of PCMan. Now, somehow the PCMan File MAnager has replaced Nautilus. It is definitely faster, but still I prefer Nautilus. So, how may I replace PCMan with NAutilus as the default File-Manager?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have tried to make my own buntu running LXDE as the desktop environment though it is running smoothly on an old laptop it has a certain problem.
I have installed PCMan File Manager as the default file manager for the LXDE and not Thunar or Dolphin, but, I have a problem with opening files from there. The default application set to open all file types is the Terminal.
What I currently do to open the file is right click and choose "Open with.." to open the file in the appropriate application. Is there a way to set the default applications?
I have Ubuntu 9.10 from minimal CD install then got LXDE and installed the following applications aside from the applications that came with LXDE:
-OpenOffice.org suite
-Mozilla Firefox
-Google Picasa
-Wine
-VLC Player
I have been using OpenSuse 11.4 LXDE version for about 6-8 months. All worked fine. I noticed a few days ago that my file manager would not start from the tool-bar menu. I went to the kick of menu to find "File Manager" under system tools and it would not start from there either. I created a new folder on the desktop and tried opening it - it would not open. I can only assume its some sort of a bug and most likely occurred because of the recent computer update (I get regular notifications to update my system so I do it).

Some of the files/folders are being displayed in the wrong order where they contain numbers. They are being ordered by their first digit not the whole number.

Is it possible to change my current nautilus window to have sudo capabilities,? e.g. to delete locked files. It may be lazy but if it takes a lot of navigation then it would be handy to somehow activate sudo from the open window without the terminal command (gksudo nautilus) which always begins at root.

But whatever image I try (some PNG or even SVG files) I can't get them to be displayed. It seems there is a very special format, size, type to match the Gnome/GTK+/Nautilus icon requirements...
Does anyone know how I can move the location bar in nautilus up by the toolbar, as shown by this pic:

By the way, a guy on Ubuntu Forums thought this was a mockup. It's not. It's the regular version of Nautilus, only I removed some toolbar buttons through the /usr/share/nautilus/ui xml files.
I just want the location bar next to the toolbar to conserve screen space, and be a bit more like Finder.
I was transferring data from one computer to my laptop and crash error came up on my laptop...

What could be the problem? Is it serious issue? I have been having security issues with Windows and are those issues begun once again? I have been under targeted attack since 2005.

I've been trying out Nautilus-actions (Gnome 2.28.4), but have been unable to import most config files from [url].
When I attempt to import an action, it complains:

ive been trying to move 170gb of music from my computer to my new archos 500gbwindows isnt an option as ubuntu is my only os from now onanyway my problem is some songs are same names and theres so many of them itd be a complete bitch to change the namesso when i go to add them they say replace or skip... is there anyway i can get the option like on windows where you add but it adds a (2) to it? or am i gonna go the hard way?

The thing is I like the standard ubuntu mono-dark icon theme; one of the pre-installed ones, but there is one icon (the computer icon to be specific) that I want to change. Is it as simple as going to the location which I believe is /usr/share/icons/gnome/ubuntu-mono dark and then deleting the icon currently used for computer, and replacing it with another or would I have to change a config file too?

I have vista and ubuntu 10.04 LTS loaded on my disk. i upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 LTS from the earlier version, after that i started using MTS Mblaze usb broadband stick as wired connections were not available. In order to get my usb stick working i messed up the ubuntu settings and now even wired connections are not working. i am frustrated and would like to replace it with 10.10 as it has MTS Mblaze default settings. In any case i never like the look and feel of 10.04 as compared to earlier versions. I have made the bootable CD for 10.10, but now how do i go about installation so as to replace 10.04. I do not want to disturb my vista as there is lot of crucial data.

I've been loving it however, I'm trying to link libreOffice Base to a mysql account on my netbook for a course in school but am not getting form controls. I've noticed that these comments were made in the software center and in many forums including this one I believe. I haven't seen a decent response to any of the other posts I saw and have been having other minor issues with libreOffice but have tolerated them so far. This just seems like nobody tested it at all.
I was trying to see what alternatives there were to libreOffice for 11.04. It turns out that it is a total nightmare trying to install and use any other software suite on ubuntu. I purged libreoffice but still cannot successfully install and use openoffice or gnomeoffice from the software center. I search online and in forums and all I see are articles and posts explaining how to ditch other suites and install libreoffice but I'm really trying to do the opposite at this point. I really want to love ubuntu but it is being very difficult to do so right now.
I have ububtu install via wubi. i want to change the install and TOTALLY replace it still using wubi. Is there anything special i have to do so that i don't end up with 2 wubi installs or 3 options on my boot list?

I need to back up my macbook (OSX) data. I do not have another mac nor do my friendsw.. I do have a PC running ubuntu 9 though. So I hook it up and can see it, but all the document are locked and I dont have permissions.... now with windows I know how to take over permissions, I have looked online and the closest I found is using the temporary root user command to view all locked files but that gets me to about 25% my data.

htm, .html and .shtml files, Nautilus runs a thumnailer to preview the file. I disable the thumnailer in gconf-editor at /desktop/gnome/thumbnailers/text@html. Now it's just showing the text inside the file. How do I replace the thumbnail and now the text with just an icon for HTML?I attached an image that shows the preview thumbnail, text thumbnail, then icon, which is what I want it to look like.

It's not just rendering pages, simply switching between static tabs (i.e. no pages loading) can take over five seconds sometimes. I have tried all of the fixes that have been suggested around the net relating to pipelining and IPV6 but these have had no noticeable effect (many others said the same but seemingly no resolution).
I would like to install Firefox 3.5 but cannot find a deb/repository. I would simply like to know the best way of installing this so that, if possible it picks up my existing preferences from my current version of Firefox and is recognised by apt so can receive updates etc... in the future which I can choose to apply if I wish. I cannot find out if my prefs and extensions will be picked up if I install via .bzr archive - will this be the case?
So I've done the Compiz --replace command but it doesn't work. I've even uninstalled Emerald but there's no change. What is this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have seen grub2 wreck the system console screen display, be dependant on files in /etc/default and /etc/grub.d and be exteamely hard to configure. Even worse Grub2 settings are distribution dependent and distribution specific.
Something single like vga=nnnn in grub2 involves something akin to these commands in grub2 "set gfxmode=1280x800 set gfxpayload=keep insmod gfxterm insmod vbe" and editing far too many files. I have a steady flickering screen loaded during boot because Ubuntu's usplash image is larger than 640x480 and the vga size is 640x480. Grub2 is reluctant to be anything but user friendly.
Practical question: Does anyone know of a guide that could change grub2 back into the useful and user friendly grub (menu.lst).
