Ubuntu :: Repair Broken HALEVT?

Sep 1, 2011

Is there any way to repair halevt? If I reinstall via synaptic the installation fails with HALevt error 100. Then all installations of any kind report same error. I researched and found a way to remove the app install bug. However, mounting, accessing usb devices is still heavily problematic. I assume halevt needs reinstalling, but seems impossible.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Repair Broken Grub2

Mar 31, 2010

I am currently in a country where the internet speed is roughly 15KB at best, if at all. So I cant download the 9.10 live CD. My grub2 broke when I reinstalled windows (because its so virus prone). This guide: [URL]. Says how to repair grub2 using grub2 live CD. Currently I have access to a 6.10 Ubuntu CD but when I try to mount the boot partition I get an error saying that the filesystem has unknown options. I think that the latest filesystem didn't exist back then and even if that would work. Can I reinstall grub2 using grub? Or is there any possibility to download an ultra small linux live system image with grub2? it seems all ubuntu variations come in 500MB+ packs.

Ubuntu :: Repair Broken Installation Without Reinstalling?

Oct 23, 2010

I think a recent update to 10.04 somehow has broken my installation. When I turn on the machine, it just sits at the splash screen with the white dots turning orange from left to right as if it is going to boot up.

I have tried letting it sit there but after half an hour it still remains the same. I have tried booting into recovery mode but that fails somewhere along the startup process. Is there a way to 'repair broken installation' when booting up with live cd? I have been able to get to that option and I am trying to avoid doing a fresh install if possible.

Ubuntu :: Finding Filesystem Type/repair Broken Filesystem?

Jul 9, 2010

I have a following problem: Recently my drive with Ubuntu 9.4 has mysteriously stopped working, i.e. when I switch the computer on it informs me that GRUB didn't find the filesystem. Well, I suppose it happens.

First, I though it was due to the drive dying, but I popped it in an external enclosure and HDTune told me the drive was fine. Wanting to recover the files on the drive before reinstalling I first tried to mount it in said external enclosure under Windows (I have Win Ext2 driver installed which used to work just fine). This time, however, drive gets assigned a letter but upon opening it Windows popped up an error saying that the drive was not formatted and whether I would like to format it then.

Unfazed by this streak of failures I tried to mount it under Linux but, alas, to no avail. I might have tried every single -t operator under mount command but it still won't budge and let me mount.

Software :: Repair "broken Packages" In Mint 11?

I got an Upgrade manager notification in my panel so clicked it to see what needed upgrading. However when I went to upgrade I got an error message saying I had to fix broken packages first. See Screen shot. I opened Synaptic and this says there are no broken packages see synaptic screen shot... Is there a CLI way to look at and repair installed packages? (I checked other threads on LQ and found some advice for Fedora 8 which suggests running an rpm command, however rpm is not the package manager of choice for Mint.)

Ubuntu :: Halevt And Permissions, Commands Running But Not Correctly?

Nov 19, 2010

I recently decided to attempt to implement automatically disabling my laptop's touchpad when my external mouse is connected, and I am just about there.Unfortunately, what I suspect to be a permissions problem is stopping me from succeeding. Here's what I have done sofar:Written a Script which will enable or disable the touchpad based upon cli argument (verified to work when called via terminal)Set up a rule for halevt which successfully launches an arbitrary command when the mouse is connected or disconnected (even successfully logging itself)Determined that the script is in fact being called upon device connection (by adding echo statements to the script which are working)When launching halevt, I have even tried running it as my user/group, and with a special config file, all to no avail. Also, here is my command to run halevt:

Code:
sudo halevt -u brendon -g brendon -c /home/brendon/.halevt.xml

Ubuntu :: Repair With No Access To Desktop?

I think CTRL+ALT+F2 gave me "run" window. "Sudo gnome-panel &" did nothing. "Init 1" gave me a "init 1" screen but I couldn't accomplish anything there for lack of know-how. Reinstalling is no big deal at all for me but I wish I could accomplish something geeky like a repair. I'm not sure of the process for using a live cd.

Ubuntu :: Won't Install After Computer Repair

Jul 30, 2010

Note, I've only tried KDE versions of software since my laptop came back, so I don't know if that's the problem. I tried linux mint 9 and kubuntu 10.04. And all I get after a while is described above. I also tried some different install options, because I'm able to get to the menu to choose which type of install I want, but the other options led to the same thing, and it would sometimes display a bunch of numbers and then "EH ok" or something. the numbers on the left keep increasing, and eventually I get to the splash screen, where it freezes, and repeats the process.

It's something I dislike on Windows. A corrupt structure is likely a hardware problem, and in this case a repair can terribly damage the file system.
