Sep 8, 2010I have a hard drive where one partition is used as part of a logical volume (LV) using LVM. The partition table is corrupted and prevents the partitions from showing as devices in /dev/. The corruption prevents the logical volume from coming on-line b/c LVM cannot find the part on the corrupted disk. I (am pretty sure) I know the block offsets and lengths for each partition on the disk but do not want to write to the disk in case I am wrong.
How do I go about recovering the logical volume in this scenario?

My grub2 broke when I reinstalled windows (because its so virus prone). This guide: [URL]. Says how to repair grub2 using grub2 live CD. Currently I have access to a 6.10 Ubuntu CD but when I try to mount the boot partition I get an error saying that the filesystem has unknown options. I think that the latest filesystem didn't exist back then and even if that would work. Can I reinstall grub2 using grub? Or is there any possibility to download an ultra small linux live system image with grub2? it seems all ubuntu variations come in 500MB+ packs.

Oct 23, 2010I think a recent update to 10.04 somehow has broken my installation. When I turn on the machine, it just sits at the splash screen with the white dots turning orange from left to right as if it is going to boot up.
I have tried letting it sit there but after half an hour it still remains the same. I have tried booting into recovery mode but that fails somewhere along the startup process. Is there a way to 'repair broken installation' when booting up with live cd? I have been able to get to that option and I am trying to avoid doing a fresh install if possible.

Mar 22, 2010When I attempt to boot into Ubuntu 9.10, I get the error: "Error 15: File not found" I know the reason for this - I deleted it - Doh. A latest upgrade told me I didn't have enough room in the boot partition to install the latest files, so I thought it would be a marvellous idea to remove the old stuff, to give it some room. I obviously deleted something that I needed by mistake. I was using synaptic to do the remove & thought I would be safe. A good learning experience.
In grub menu I have options: Kernel: 2.6.31-15 - generic and also its recovery option, both of which get the same error. (It's a dual boot with XP as the original os). Ideally I'd just like to get the latest working kernel and put it somewhere appropriate, rather than do a full install. Is this possible and if so how? I have a separate boot partition (in dev/sda5), swap (sda7) and Linux (sda6).

Apr 3, 2010I have a laptop with 250 GB SATA HD that has the following:
Win7 Pro installed first with sda1=system reserved partition, sda2=C: drive, sda5=separate software application programs to differentiate from Windows' Program Files. Ubuntu 9.10 was installed next (sda6=common swap partition for all Linux distros, sda7=Ubuntu root, sda8=Ubuntu home). Then Opensuse 11.2 was installed with sda12=root and sda13=home. Finally FedoraCore11 was installed with sda9=boot, sda10=root and sda11=home. Ubuntu and Suse have grub loader in their own root partitions.
Suse's grub menu controls all OS's. From this grub menu I can select Windows or any other Linuxes. Suse uses legacy grub because it was installed right after Ubuntu 9.10 which uses (legacy) grub.
Here is opensuse's grub menu:

Somehow I also messed up Windows' boot file and boot partition table. Now I am still trying to use Windows installation CD to repair Windows but it has taken several hours and am still waiting for screen response. I cannot boot into any Linux distro either.
Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Vanished After Trial To Repair Windows
Mar 8, 2011I initially had a dual boot where I could decide to either boot into Windows 7 or Ubuntu 10.04. It work seamlessly. At some point, however, when I booted into Windows, it just seem to only load it "half" in the sense that the desktop just turned black (but when ctrl-alt-del was hit I did receive a screen with the different options).
I suspected there was a problem with grub and proceeded to restore the Windows bootloader by booting into the Windows CD and repairing the computer by entering the commands:
After restarting I suddenly do not have the option to boot into Ubuntu (where did it go?) and booting automatically into Windows the original problem persists.
Any idea what happened here and how I can restore things?

(as after two Kernel updates my wifi card drivers should be supported)I Reinstalled Vista and drivers after which I downloaded the latest Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD, burned to a disc and rebooted.When the Ubuntu installation was almost finished I got an error, the disc I was using got overheated (bad quality CD) and there was a problem copying certain files. However my hard disk was successfully partitioned and divided in half (1st partition Vista -NTFS and second Ubuntu -Ext4). But my laptop still boots directly into Vista ignoring the partly failed Ubuntu install, no boot option at startup.When I reboot using the LiveCD I can only install Ubuntu on a newly created third partition.
Is there any way I can continue or repair the previous ubuntu install? I searched this forum and the internet for options and hints yet don't seem to find an answer.The good thing is my wifi card is finally working (when I booted from the LiveCD it immediately detected wireless networks yeay)

At almost the end of the install, I see "running grub-install sda" or whatever it is. sda is my windows drive.So rather than asking where to install the bootloader or give you the option like it used to, it just did it to my "first" drive.
What the hell? Now my Windows MBR is gone. I like to maintain that so if my linux drive dies I can still boot into windows via the old windows boot loader.Possible to move Grub2 to my other drive and repair windows 7 drive MBR?

Mar 21, 2010So here is the deal, I had been running Ubuntu 8.10 from the time it was released until about 2 days ago because when I went to 9.04, I got a warning saying that 9.04 didn't support any drivers for my video card. Well I decided to go ahead and upgrade to 9.10 so that I can upgrade to 10.4 LST once it comes out. Everything seemed to be fine but I turned it that night and left it running over night. When I got up the next morning, the screen was black and the computer was not responding. When I tried to restart it and it could not finish loading the OS. It made it about half way though and then the screen just went black. YAH!!! So far the only way I have been able to do anything with it was by having a Ubuntu boot disk in the CD/ROM when I start the computer. With the disk in the drive, whatever file or driver that the OS seems to be missing, it uses the one of the disk and loads just fines. So, no that you know how my day has been let me get to the point, does anyone know if the Ubuntu installer has a repair function and if not, can I just reinstall Ubuntu and let it reload the OS files without it deleting all of my files?

Jan 17, 2009I am trying to install my laptop in a triple-boot configuration with Fedora 10, Windows XP and Windows 7 beta. I did already installed them in that order. This is how it is layed out on the harddisk:
Now i want to use grub to present a menu at boot so i can select an OS. Because I installed XP last it boots straight into XP. I've understood i should be able to do the following:
All goes well until the last step (grub-install). It gives an error stating that /dev/sda doesn't exist, which is correct; It doesn't. I do have the "device" listed outside of the chrooted environment.
My question is: How do I get /dev/sda available in my chrooted environment?
