what i did was, remove evolution mail from synaptic, what i wanted to do was just remove the indicator applet from the task bar. i read a bunch of bad stuff about removing evolution from synaptic vs just removing the applet.
im worried. did i break anything or put my security at risk. after, i used a command (older) (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)to install ubuntu desktop. because i thought that it would fix evolution. then i went to synaptic and installed a package called evolution. i rechecked evolution in applications menu. however, i notice that i have both a checkable evolution and two evolution icons. nothing 'seems' broken. im not sure if it ever was. and evolution calender pops up as normal, as does the the installed plain evolution. they both seems to be an exact copy of the other.
all i really wanted to do was remove the indicator applet. did i make a serious mistake. since ive had ubuntu, ive reformatted a lot because i was worried i made a mistake of some kind. however now im into the more "make a mistake and fix it stage' as im pretty happy with my current desktop and have worked hard to customize it. the command, sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages removed the mail icon. i still am worried that i broke something, or put my security at risk. also, now i have two mail icons. evolution mail and calendar, and another just called evolution.

I recently installed the KDE and xface desktops out of curiosity but now I'm left with a massive amount of extra Apps, some that I want and some I don't. When I try marking some to remove in Synaptic, it comes up with a bunch of others that will be marked. Is it possible to remove them just one by one with out any extras being marked for removal as well?

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and during my tries to free space I've removed several packages such as: openoffice, all editors, and some more packages such as players and printers drivers that I don't need and seem o.k to remove. However, after restart, the graphical interface doesn't load, I'm in the xserver, I have console but not gui. I was wondering if anyone can tell me which packages I should not remove or let me know of dependencies I need to consider when messing with packages?

I just removed wine, I want it completely removed from my system. I installed it and removed it using the Software Center. However I still have associated options in the Nautilus context menu. For example when I right click any text file I have "Open With notepad" as an option. It's easy enough to right click that file, go to the open with tab, and remove notepad from the list of options. However it's apparently associated with certain types of files because the option was there for bash scripts I'd written with no extension, files with the .txt extension, etc. So this is apparently some file associations that wine installed and didn't take out. I've searched the xml files in /usr/share/nautilus/ui and none of those contained the word "notepad" so I'm guessing that's not where I need to be focusing my attention. I've done some googling and nobody seems have a definitive answer that I can find. Also, I found a "how to uninstall" on Wine's website where it basically just had me remove $HOME/.wine and some gnome association settings, and I did that and have even rebooted and that option was still there. I've removed it for those two types of files, but I want to know where it's stored so I can get rid of all traces.

I was trying to install Sim City 4 Deluxe when somehow through my mounting an un-mounting of the two ISO's nautilus decided to make an entry in the places menu. I've searched through the forums and most of what I'm finding is how to remove things like the network and desktop items.
Here are three screenshots showing what I mean. Number one shows the entry I am talking about, specifically the SC4DELUXE1 entry. Number two shows that just right clicking and selecting remove like many threads suggest does not work here as it is grayed out. Lastly number three, this is the error I'm given when I left click the entry.
I finally figured out how to fix this. I simply went into the disk utility. Under peripheral devices the unwanted device was listed. Click the check file system button after selecting the device. It reports back that the file system is not clean and removes the device.

how to remove an "Open With" Entry in the right click menu in Nautilus? I accidentally created an entry for all "folder" type of files for "Code::Blocks", so every time I right click a folder, I get an "Open With Code::Blocks IDE" option.

I was setting up a machine for a friend using my normal username. Once the install was finished I created a new account (Admin) for the friend, logged out, logged in as the friend and deleted my own account. On the next reboot I get a message about not being able to update .ICEauthority for my own account, which I thought was deleted. Then there are messages about the configuration server failing and that Nautilus can't find the home dir for my own account, then just the desktop background, no panel, no nothing, just hangs.
Obviously, in this case deleting the account didn't clean up everything. How can I get to the login prompt for the friend's account?

Decided to give Unity desktop a try this afternoon on my Maverick desktop - bad mistake. Found it very slow so I removed it. After that I restarted and all I get after logging in is a white screen.
I don't get an option at login to use KDE or anything else for that matter, so I'm hoping someone can give me some idea how I can rectify this.
Really don't want to wipe the install and start over because I don't have a separate home partition (think I've learned my lesson on that front) and there's a lot of stuff I need to keep on this machine.

I've been searching on google but the only solution seems to be to change the name of the files (which didn't work). Is there any way to remove the banner? I'm not 3yrs old I know how to share files and don't need to be reminded where i can receive files.

I am using Fedora 15 x64 gnome 3. I removed Evolution Mail as I prefer to use Thunderbird... However after I removed it the computer got hung. I could not do anything so I did Power OFF and ON. Fedora booted and loaded alright until the Login Screen but when I try to login it says, "cannot login into Gnome Session" or something like that.
I suspect that when I removed Evolution Mail I something else and something important got removed. Now I cannot login at all.

I am using Ubuntu 9.10, and is the only OS installed on my system. Yesterday, my desktop stopped working - no right-click function / display of icons. My wallpaper was still intact. The last thing I did was pressed ALT + F2 and executed "gksudo nautilus". This fixed my desktop for the time being, but wasn't showing the correct icons/wallpaper.The real problem started when I restarted. I get the normal login screen, and when I enter my info, it just restarts back to the login screen. I know I am entering the correct information, my caps lock isn't on etc. If I enter my password incorrectly it doesn't reload, it just acts normal and says the pw was wrong. Only when I enter my info correctly does it go to a black screen really quick, then come back to the boot screen.
I am at work right now, but will be checking this thread again later tonight. Please help, I am locked out of my computer which I desperately need to log in to!

I have a workstation with Fedora 13. This workstation is used for very long remote processes. Recently it has been shutdown accidentally by a user and has caused the loss of some of these processes. As such, for precautionary reasons, I have decided to remove these options from all our workstations so that only the super user can initiate reboots or shutdowns.
In previous versions I was able to do this by using gdmsetup and unchecking the Show Action Menu option. This also added the SystemMenu=false flag under [greeter] in the /etc/gdm/custom.conf file. This was under RedHat EL5. However in Fedora 13 neither of these methods work. Gdmsetup no longer exists and adding that flag to the custom.conf file does not work. I rebooted after editting the file and the shutdown option still appears at login.

I have a Debian and a Ubuntu box. I installed a samba server on Debian box. I can log in the samba share folders from Windows boxes. Since the samba server has SHARE security mode, I need password only. But when I try to log in the samba share folders from Ubuntu box using nautilus, it asks username, domain and password. I cannot log in share folders on the Debian box. There is no message. Nautilus keep showing the password input box until i cancel it.So I use smbmount command. It works well. But that way is not comfortable at all. Anyone can help me logging in samba share in nautilus?

My grandson got a little free time on my login screen. When I got back I found the right half of the screen was covered with a cascade of zoomed copies of the regular login display. Each layer of the cascade larger that the previous as one moved right across the screen. When I reboot it is still there. I have tried various hotkey combinations in the hopes that I could change this, but with no result. I have looked for files which might have such a pattern saved. I found a file /usr/share/gnome-session/session-properties.ui with a promising name and inside was a series of 'child' entries, but removing all but the first child entry changed nothing. how to fix it?

I googled a lot but I didn't find anything about this. I have multiple accounts on the same ftp server (the server is not mine I don't access its configuration)
If I write ftp://hostname on the location bar it lets me login, but only allow me to be in only one account at a time. Putting ftp://hostname on the location again just opens the account I logged into and I'm unable to login to the other account to move files between them conveniently.
Is it possible to log into multiple accounts on the same server?

I removed my .gnome and .nautilus folders and .notifier file. it is working now. I do not know exactly which of these 3 fixed it but I hope this might help someone else!I have some major issue with nautilus which is preventing me from loogging in into my system which is kind of criticle this weekend.I'm running Squeeze with latest updates.
The problem:Today gnome gave some problems caus my taskbar was suddently gone. I couldn't get it back to i reinstall gnome-desktop and updated my whole system. At the update some yes/no questions on a blue screen asking me to restart cups etc had corrupted yes/no buttons. Weird character sets were shown. Well that can happen sometimes i thought. After reinstalling gnome i can't login anymore. My screen keeps flashing while it shows the loading icon of the mouse.Anyone got suggestions? I can't find similar problems on the internet, only problems that happen while already logged in. In my case the segfault prevents gdm starting!

nautilus starting up at login then spawning new instances till it runs out of memory. At one time I checked Startup Applications Preferences to Automatically remember running applications when logging out; I unchecked this thinking it was the problem; but it has not gone away; I have to kill nautilus, then the spawning will stop. Also I can not close nautilus; another instance will run; sometimes starting the spawn all over.

I know a bunch of commands and I am comfortable using the terminal, I even set a powerpc server but I can't figure out how to remove epiphany on this new computer I'm setting up. I didn't install anything with tasksel. I installed gnome and xorg afterwards... I load it up and 'startx' just fine. then I check around for the programs that were installed. I lik'em gimp, lot's of utilities. gedit. anyway I find epiphany, which I have already established that I dislike, I immediately go to the root terminal (another nice program that comes with gnome) and type apt-get remove epiphany-browser-data the output says it will be deleting gnome... however I have researched and found these are simpy meta packages that don't really matter.... however under the section that states all the packages that will be removed by autoremove there is a huge list... I doubt these packages are safe to remove. how to remove epiphany without removing a huge amount of probably needed software

These should be my last pleas for help with regard to Fedora 13. I've been unable to turn off the notifications that appear in the top right corner, despite a decent amount of searching on google. I can't remove any notifications package without removing a bunch of important software along with it. Also, F13 refuses to "Safely Remove" either of my external disks. I have to yank out the usb cord, touching wood each time.

Is it possible to change my current nautilus window to have sudo capabilities,? e.g. to delete locked files. It may be lazy but if it takes a lot of navigation then it would be handy to somehow activate sudo from the open window without the terminal command (gksudo nautilus) which always begins at root.

I've added a new Nautilus action and I'd like to use another icon that those provided in the nautilus item con list (see attachment).
But whatever image I try (some PNG or even SVG files) I can't get them to be displayed. It seems there is a very special format, size, type to match the Gnome/GTK+/Nautilus icon requirements...

Does anyone know how I can move the location bar in nautilus up by the toolbar, as shown by this pic:
http://i39.tinypic.com/2qdsyll.jpg
I'd rather not have to download the source of nautilus and edit the code / compile it myself.
By the way, a guy on Ubuntu Forums thought this was a mockup. It's not. It's the regular version of Nautilus, only I removed some toolbar buttons through the /usr/share/nautilus/ui xml files.
I just want the location bar next to the toolbar to conserve screen space, and be a bit more like Finder.

Error 2:
Openoffice.Org-Brand Crash
Reason: Process/usr/lib/openoffice.org3/program/soffice.bin was killed by signal (SIGABRT)
What could be the problem? Is it serious issue? I have been having security issues with Windows and are those issues begun once again? I have been under targeted attack since 2005.
